Hello my lovely readers, I'm trying my best to stick to my word and continue writing this fic. Some days it's easy while others are a little more difficult, but today is a little better. I'm running off the most sleep I've gotten in a while so I should be able to get my creative juices flowing enough to produce a decent chapter. I don't want to let you guys down so please bare with me, I really really appreciate it!
Chapter 22
"Come on Jo! Try harder! Do you want to be reevaluated again?" I heard the same annoying woman who's been with me since I was brought here yelling at me from the otherside of the safety glass. Clenching my fists and my jaw I brought my hands up closer to my face as I squared off against a tall, muscular raven haired boy. He moved so fast I almost missed it; almost but not quite. He threw a left jab aimed for my face, I reacted instantly as I bobbed and weaved around his arm and sent a right hook straight into his ribs catching him off gaurd. He wasn't prepared for me speed.
The boy let out a grunt of pain and stumbled clumsily away from me, he was going to feel that tomorrow. Stepping back out of his range I got back into my left fighting stance, hands up in front of my face. It took him a few seconds to recover but it was just enough not to be repremanded for it from our proctor, he sent me a glare full of malice and rage.
Good. I feed off my opponents' negative energy.
"Very good you two. Keep it up, you're ready to move onto the next test." The woman spoke again. We were about to continue with our fight when the door buzzed indicating that it was being opened. Standing up straight we watched as the same brown haired by from last time walked in holding a case.
The brown haired boy, Thomas I think his name was, unlocked the case and opened it. He pulled out two large Cold Steel bowie knives with 11 3/4" blades. When the florescent light hit the blades I felt my pulse quicken. What did we need these? What the hell was the next test?
Thomas held out the knife to me and I hesitated, I didn't want anything to do with weapons, "Take it Jo, you will need it." I sucked my lips in with a frown as I reluctantly did as I was told. Looking over I saw that the boy I was sparring with had already taken his blade and he looked way too comfortable with it for my liking. I glanced back down at the knife, I gripped it tightly in my fist as I adjusted to it as being an extention of my arm.
"Excellent. Now, for the next test. Only one of you will be walking out of this room today and when you do you will be one step closer to being an even bigger asset to W.I.C.K.E.D. don't let us down. There's a reason we chose you, now prove to us that we were right in our assumptions." The woman told us. After she informed us that only one of us will make it out of this room alive the raven haired boy and I shared looks of terror but as soon as the emotion flashed across our faces they were gone.
"Prepare yourselves. They're coming." She said. My grip on the handle of my knife tightened to the point that my knuckles were white. I was terrified. All I could focus on was the blood pounding in my ears as I tried to calm myself. I was going to make it out of this room alive.
My emotions instantly snapped back into my control as we heard the buzz of the door behind us opening. Lingering towards the main door I kept my eyes glued on the door. At first there was nothing, no light, no sound, nothing. Narrowing my eyes my ears perked up and my body tensed up when I finally heard a noise. It was like nothing I've ever heard before. The sound of a guttural screech was followed by what sounded like chains dragging on the ground, it progressivly got louder as more growls and screeches were heard.
What came next I was not ready for.
I watched as a pale, almost translucent hand reached around to grasp the door jam. My breath hitched in my throat when the being attached to the hand pulled itself into view. It looked like it was once human but it died and was decompsing at a slow rate, it was barley covered in any clothing since they were torn and handing off it's frail frame. The other thing I noticed was that instead of where it's eyes should be was nothing but gaping holes. This thing was so unsettling. On my right I heard the boy gasp sharply. The creature whipped it's head in his direction and let out an ear piercing screech then procceded to throw itself forwards towards the boy.
"Shit!" I cursed as moved away from the creature as the boy tried to run. I lost focus for a second and when I turned to run I realized I was a few feet away from another one of those creatures. It's sunken eyes caught me off gaurd long enough for the creature to attack. It jumped at me and I barely had enough time to drop down onto my stomach before I quickly rolled out of it's way. Springing up into a fighting stance I took a couple steps back and adjusted my grip of the knife so I held it in a hammer grip.
Next to me I could hear the blind creature fiercing going after my sparring partner. I was hoping that both of us would make it out of here alive tonight and not just one. The creature I was facing spun around after noticing I wasn't in it's line of sight. My heart was beating so rapidly I thought I was going to throw up.
'You can do this Jo. You are a fighter and you WILL survive this. Now move your butt and kill this thinng!' I told myself before taking a deep breath. I let myself shut out everything else around and turn off my fear, the creature jumped into action once more and it was incredibly fast.
When it came at me I dodged its outstretched hand but its sharp, claw-like nails got caught on my shirt and tore it open right by my ribs. That was close. I didn't have much time to change up my balance as the creature once again came at me, mouth open as an inhuman scream peirced my ears. I went to push kick it away but my reaction time wasn't fast enough and it took me down to the ground with a barrel roll. I felt something smash into my nose and all I heard was a sickening crunch and hot, sticky liquid running down my face.
"AH! Get off of me!" I screamed as I used my left forearm against its throat to hold it back from biting into my face. Turning my head to the side I saw my knife discarded on the ground just a fingers length away from my outstretched hand.
"Damnit!" At this point I couldn't stop the curses that were coming out of my mouth. I mentally screamed at myself to man up and protect myself. I let out a scream as I leaned to the right. At the same time I dropped my arm holding back the creature quickly. All I felt was a hot searing pain but I didn't dare look, all I could focus on was getting my only means of defense. Once the knife was clasped tightly in my right hand I scooted my left hip to roll over onto my left side and right as the creature was about to sink its nasty teeth into my arm I moved at a blinding speed and burried my blade all the way to the gaurd in its skull.
I pushed the now dead creature off of me with a grunt and sat up. My blood was being pumped full of adreneline I didn't feel any of my injuries, I sat there panting then turned my gaze to the dead body next to me and it was even more horrifying when it was up close and still.
"Well done Jo, you have passed the test." At the womans words my head snapped around to where my partner was and I saw that his creature was dead but it took his life with it. There was so much blood, it coated the floor in the corner where they were at and it was smeared all over the walls. I shakily pulled myself up onto my feet and approached their bodies. At the sight before me I almost vomited right there, it was amazing he wasn't dead a long time ago, the blind creature was half on top of him with his knife planted in its throat but the boy had almost all of his internal organs laying outside his body, the creature had gutted him.
"W-what are these things?" I asked aloud. The buzzer went off once more as the main door opened and in walked men in tactical gear with large guns strapped across their chest. I quickly lost interest in them as I turned back to look at the boy. Why do we have to do this? I know were special but why us? Why not any of the other kids or anyone else? He was too young to die. My mind was beginning to become overwhelmed as I felt all my fear, sadness and rage flood my body.
'What was his name? Did I even know his name? He's been around almost as long as me and I couldn't even get his name.' I was so emmersed in my own thoughts that I wasn't prepared for my bicep to be grabbed. As soon as I was touched it was like I was fighting more my life again, I pivoted quickly on the ball of my left foot and spent my knee into their stomach, then as soon as my toes touched back on the ground I followed up with a downward elbow to their back with my right arm sending them face first into the ground. In an impressive display of speed I had taken my right leg and swung it over their body and used my knee to press against their back, imobilizing them then grabbed a fist full of their hair and yanked their head back to expose their throat.
"Jo stop!" Someone shouted, snapping me back to reality right as I was about to stab my blade into their body where their collarbones met in the middle. The knife clattered to the ground as if it had burned me and I frantically stumbled off the person I attacked.
"Im sorry, I didn't mean to I swear!" I held my hands up in surrender and looked in the direction of the safety viewing glass. The one person that I refused to let see me this way was standing there, almond shaped brown eyes wide as he stared at me in horror.
"No, Minho I didn't mean it."
"Jo! Jo! Wake up!" I heard someone's voice but I wasn't sure if it was real until they laid a hand on me. My eyes snapped open in an instant and reaching up with my left hand I grabbed their throat and flipped myself off my hammock taking them with me as I pinned them to the ground and put all of my weight on their chest.
"Wake up you slinthead!" Someone called out to me as best they could while I gripped their throat, choking them. It took me a second to regain my compsure but when I did I was met with a pair of almond shaped brown eyes, wide in shock.
"Oh my god Minho! I'm sorry!" I released his throat quickly and he immediatly sucked in some much needed air.
"Bloody hell Jo, are you trying to kill me?" He frowned up at me but instead of anger in his eyes all I could see was worry. I had worried him, and rightfully so. I told him about my crazy dreams but none of them had ever been this long or vivid; almost like I was reliving a memory I have no recollection of.
"I-I don't know what happened. I..freaked out." I climbed off his chest to allow him to breathe better. I swear I was losing my mind, no one else was having these dreams or any dreams of their memories except me. And if these were really my memories I'm almost grateful that the Creators took them from me.
Minho sat up, he bent his left knee in the air and propped his arm on top. I watched his every move as he took his free hand and brushed my unruly hair out of my face. Searching his face for any sign of fear I tried to slow down my erratic heart beat. Minho scooted closer to me and his eyes met mine. Too ashamed with myself for hurting him, I looked down. The feelings of anger bubbled in my gut but it wasn't directed at him, or anyone else; I was mad at myself. I had hurt my best friend, I was losing control.
"What happened Jo? Attacking shanks in your sleep isn't something that you do. Did you have another dream again?" He mentioned my dreams in a hushed voice since him and Newt were the only ones that knew.
"I don't want to talk about it Min. It was a bad one." I said as I felt my eyes burn with unshed tears.
"Look at me." He demanded in the nicest way he could and when I didn't follow his request he sighed, "Jo, look at me please." His voice was soft but still held the air of authority and snarkiness that only Minho could have which is why I looked at him when he asked this time.
"What do you want me to say Min? That I'm going crazy and I keep having dreams that feel so real they might actually be my memories? Let me tell you one thing Minho, these dreams I have are so terrifying and so intense that I wake up and hurt the one person in this shucking place that I would never hurt. I do not want to think about them anymore. I'm afraid I'm losing my mind." I spoke with such intensity that he didn't have anything to say.
"I am really sorry for hurting you Minho. You know I would never." I said with a sigh and ran my fingers through my messy bed head.
"Don't worry about it Red. I'm fine, Gally hurts me way more when we wrestle." He stands up and offers me his hand to which I take and he hauls me to my feet, "Come on you shuckface, you need to eat then take a shower. Try to calm down." He leads me out of the Homestead and towards the kitchen.
If we ever make it out of the Glade alive I will go anywhere this boy goes. I can't imagine my life without him in it.
