Chapter 32: Trick, Not Treat

"First New York Halloween!" Sam declared as the New York group got off the plane.

"It's really our first New York Halloween, too," Kurt said. "Last year Hurricane Sandy ruined Halloween for us."

"I remember you mentioning that," Finn said.

"Wicked was really good," Tina said. "It's ironic that they did it right before Halloween."

"Although I don't think any version of For Good can top Kurt's and mine on the Broadway stage in New York City," Rachel said.

"No version can," Finn agreed.

"Finn, have you ever even heard our version?" Kurt asked.

Finn had to admit it. "Yes, when you guys went to the theatre, I was there too, hiding in the back. I recorded it on my camera. You were amazing."

"Thanks," Rachel said, giving Finn a hug as Finn was relieved that Rachel wasn't mad at him.

"Hey, since we all probably have jet lag from the plane ride, how about everyone just spend the night at our apartment?" Santana suggested.

"Yeah, you should," Blaine told the three dorm residents. "We have couches."

"That would be fun," Sam said.

The group got on the bus and rode back to the apartment. New York was decorated for Halloween, and Finn was surprised by how elaborate the decorations had gotten. Of course, they'd probably be much more elaborate for Christmas. And Finn was so excited for his first New York Christmas.

"We should all dress up and hand out candy at the loft," Kurt said as they walked up to the loft. "Theme type costumes."

"That's a good idea," Finn began as he opened the door. Then when he looked inside, his mind went blank. "Oh my God."

"Holy crap," Blaine added.

"Who did this?" Sam said in shock.

Finn couldn't believe what he was seeing. Their apartment was practically empty. Well, the living room was completely deprived of furniture. Their couches were gone, their tables were gone, their chairs were gone. Some newspapers and magazines were scattered around the floor.

Someone had broken into their apartment.

"What happened?" Tina asked. "Who would do something like this?"

"I don't even know," Rachel said.

Everyone stood there in silence. They knew what they had to do. If this much was out of the living room, things had probably been taken from the bedrooms as well.

"Our refrigerator!" Finn heard Santana shout. "It's completely empty!"

Finn ran into the kitchen. Sure enough, Santana was right. Not only had this person taken their furniture, they'd taken their food as well.

"Guess we need to go to the grocery store," Kurt said, clearly trying not to sound too angry.

"We have money on our meal cards at the dorms," Artie said. "You guys can come with us..."

Finn felt his stomach turning. It was as if bad luck was following them around. First Finn had been sexually abused, then Rachel's mother got cancer, now their apartment had been broken into.

"I bet SHE had something to do with this," Rachel hissed.

Finn knew who Rachel meant. "Rachel, she's serving jail time..."

"Yeah, but she could have sent some of her friends here," Santana pointed out.

"Exactly," Rachel added. "She probably had an accomplice."

Finn didn't even want to think about Lucy right now. "Let's just see what's in our bedrooms."

"Okay," Kurt said quietly.

All together, the group went to all three bedrooms. All three were in similar conditions. The beds were gone. The dresser drawers were broken on the floor, and all the clothes appeared to be completely gone. A few things were still there, some things with some individual sentimental value that the criminals probably wouldn't care about, but there was nowhere to sleep, nowhere to sit, nothing to eat, nothing to wear...

"I agree, she did this," Kurt said. "Or got some friends to do it."

"I hate this," Finn groaned. He didn't know what else to say.

He heard a knock on the door. Dreading that it was the burglar him or herself, he felt some relief when Santana came in with Dani. "Santana texted me and told me what happened," Dani said, looking around. "I'm so sorry. Holy crap."

"It sucks," Tina said. "I wish I could offer them a place to stay in my dorm, but I don't even have a couch."

"Neither do I," Sam said.

"Neither do I," Artie added.

"Well, you guys are going to need someplace to stay," Dani said. "How about you come to my apartment? That way you can get away from all this."

"We're going to need to get the apartment investigated," Rachel pointed out. "Find out who did this."

"You guys should call the police," Artie suggested.

"Yeah, I'm calling them right now," Kurt said, getting out his phone.

"I didn't think I'd have to talk to them again so soon," Finn said.

"Why don't you guys go to Dani's apartment?" Artie suggested. "You guys live here, and it's more upsetting for you. The three of us can talk to the police when they come, and we'll put you guys on the phone if they need you."

"Are you sure?" Kurt asked.

"Yeah," Tina agreed. "This is your apartment. I know we've spent lots of time here, but the five of you live here."

"Okay," Blaine breathed. "Just call us if they need to talk to us."

"And you know where I live," Dani added. "Once the police come, feel free to come over."

"Thanks Dani," Sam said. "We'll be there."

"Call us if they need us, okay?" Finn said. He left the apartment with Rachel, Kurt, Blaine, Santana and Dani, not sure what to do.

"You guys can spend the night at my place," Dani offered. "I know it's only a one bedroom, but I do have cushions and pillows... Santana can be in the bed with me, and you guys can take cushions off the furniture to sleep on."

"Why would someone do this to us?" Finn asked again.

"Some people are just horrible," Dani said. "I wish I could offer more of a place to stay while we figure things out."

"We're going to have to replace all our furniture, all our clothes," Kurt said. "Not to mention there might be some psycho out there who's targeting us."

"We'll figure something out," Dani said.

"I might as well call our parents and tell them about what happened," Finn told Kurt.

"Yeah, I'd like to talk to them too," Kurt added.

Finn picked up his phone and dialed his mom's phone number. Carole picked up almost right away. "Hey honey. Did you get to New York okay?"

"Mom, our apartment was broken into," Finn said.

"What?" Carole asked, sounding shocked.

"Whoever broke into it took our furniture, took our clothes, even took our food," Finn said.

"Oh, Finn..." Carole began.

Finn felt like he was going to cry. "All we have is the clothes in the bags we took with us to Lima. Luckily they didn't take lots of our sentimental things, but still..."

"Of course you're upset," Carole said. "With all your furniture gone, what are you doing?"

"I'm not sure," Finn admitted. Yes, they were staying with Dani tonight, but how long would she let them stay there? "Tonight we're staying with Santana's girlfriend, but who knows about the future?"

"Well, at least you guys have a place to stay tonight," Carole said. "Finn, do you need Burt and me to come?"

Finn wanted his mom now, but he couldn't ask her to interrupt his life. "We'll be fine."

"Finn, you guys need to find a new apartment," Carole said. "This was probably someone trying to target you."

"Lots of people think it was Lucy," Finn told his mom.

"The little bitch," Carole snapped.

"Mom," Finn said.

"Well, Finn, I am so sorry," Carole continued.

"Thanks, Mom," Finn said. "I don't know why someone would do this to us."

"It may not have been targeted at you," Carole said. "It might have been just intended as a robbery without knowing who lived there."

"Furniture's expensive, Mom," Finn said.

"Burt and I will help you guys out, and so will Rachel's dads, and Blaine's parents, and Santana's parents," Carole said. "Just don't think about replacing the furniture tonight."

"I'll try not to," Finn said.

"Finn, Burt really wants to talk to Kurt, can you put him on the phone?" Carole asked. "I'll call you again soon, I promise."

"Okay," Finn said. He handed Kurt the phone. "Kurt, Dad wants to talk to you."

"I should call my parents, too," Blaine said, getting out his phone. Santana decided to call hers too, but when Rachel called her dads, they didn't answer.

"They're probably just busy," Finn told her. "I'm sure they'll call you back."

Rachel nodded as she snuggled to Finn's side during the walk to Dani's apartment. Why had this happened to them? Why hadn't any of the neighbors seen what was going on and stopped the criminal?

Finally, the group arrived at Dani's apartment. By the time they arrived, Rachel was on the phone with her dads, and the others had all ended their own conversations. For what felt like forever, the group sat in the living room in silence while Rachel talked on the phone in the kitchen. "I know it isn't much, but it's better than an empty apartment that probably has negative associations with it," Dani finally said.

"Thanks for letting us come, babe," Santana said.

"I just wish I had more beds," Dani said. The group heard a knock on the door, and Dani opened it as Elliott came in.

"Hey," Kurt said to Elliott.

"Hey," Elliott said. "Dani sent me a text about what happened and told me you guys were here, so I thought I'd come over and check on you guys."

"Thanks," Blaine said.

"Where are you guys staying while you figure things out?" Elliott asked. "Because I do have a foldout couch in my apartment."

"Well, they were going to spend the night here, but maybe some of them would like to go to your place," Dani said.

"How about Blaine and I go sleep on the foldout couch?" Kurt suggested as Rachel came back in. "Then Finn and Rachel can stay here, and Santana can sleep in your room with you."

"Doesn't your mom live here in New York, Rachel?" Elliott asked as Rachel came into the living room.

Finn saw Rachel looking uncomfortable. Even though Rachel and Shelby were getting to know each other, Finn knew Rachel wasn't at that point yet. "I think we'll be fine here."

"Rachel's mother is sick," Finn told them. "So it probably wouldn't be a good idea."

"I see," Elliott said. "That must have been really scary for you guys."

"We never thought that people would do that to us," Finn said.

"One of the worst things is, one of our concerns is finding a way to replace all the furniture and clothes," Kurt said. "It's going to be really expensive."

"Don't worry about that now," Dani told the group. "Right now you should focus on staying safe."

The group heard another knock, and when Dani answered the door, Sam, Artie and Tina came in. "How did things go with the police?" Blaine asked.

"Well, they took pictures, and we gave them your numbers, so they'll call tomorrow," Sam said. "They understood that it might be too much to talk to them now."

"Thanks for doing that for us, guys," Finn said.

"Oh, it's no problem," Tina said.

"We're lucky to have such great friends like you," Rachel said. "And to have made great friends here in New York."

"Are you guys hungry?" Elliott asked. "I remember Dani saying that Santana said you guys had a flight during the dinner hours, so I'm guessing that means you haven't eaten yet."

"Yeah, we haven't," Finn said. He hadn't realized that they hadn't eaten.

"How about we pick up some food?" Tina suggested.

"There's a pizza place down the street," Dani said.

"Some food would probably be good," Blaine admitted.

A few hours later, Artie, Sam and Tina had gone back to their dorms, Elliott had taken Kurt and Blaine to his apartment, and Santana and Dani had gone to Dani's room. Finn and Rachel were on Dani's couch, curled up to each other, trying their best to get comfortable.

"Are you okay?" Rachel whispered to Finn.

"As okay as I can be," Finn whispered. "Are you okay?"

"Like you said, as okay as I can be," Rachel said.

Finn wrapped his arms around Rachel. "I'm so sorry."

"Why are you apologizing?" Rachel asked. "This isn't your fault."

"There's no way to be sure, but I have a feeling she was behind this," Finn said. "She probably got some friends to come break into our apartment. And now we have no beds, no furniture, barely any clothes..."

Rachel gave Finn a kiss. "We don't know. We'll figure something out."

"I love you," Finn whispered.

"I love you too," Rachel said. "Now please try to go to sleep."

"I'll try," Finn said. He knew it was going to be way too hard to sleep tonight though. For one thing, he had to curl up his legs to fit on the couch, and he and Rachel were tightly squeezed on it. He tried closing his eyes, hoping that would help him fall asleep.

"Finn, have you been in contact with anyone since the law firm since you left?" a police officer asked. It was the next morning, and the group had gathered at Dani's apartment again to talk to the police. Some police were investigating at the apartment and had sent others here to talk to the five residents. Since no one had gotten much sleep last night, everyone was taking the day off of school and work.

"Not since I left," Finn said. Rachel felt her concern rising. Of course this was hardest for Finn. She didn't know how or who, but she had a feeling that Lucy had somehow had something to do with this. Even though she was serving jail time, she could have sent friends.

"Are you all sure there's no one else who might have wanted to get revenge on any of you?" another policeman asked. "Ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends?"

"Maybe that creeper Brody did it," Santana said.

"I doubt it, he's got plenty of opportunities to make up for what he doesn't get anymore with me," Rachel said, cringing at the mention of Brody.

"Or maybe it was Jesse St. Jackass," Kurt said. "He did come try out for Funny Girl..."

"I don't think he even knows where we live," Rachel said. Yes, this was upsetting, but she didn't think any of her exes would have anything to do with it.

"What about Adam?" Blaine asked Kurt.

"Adam isn't that type of person," Kurt said.

"It is possible that it was someone who doesn't even know us," Finn said.

"That is possible," the officer agreed. "But in these cases, it often is someone who knows the victims."

"Well, thank you for helping us out," Rachel said.

"We'll keep you all updated," the police officer said. "In the mean time, it's probably good that you stay with your friends."

"Thank you," Rachel said again. As the police left, Rachel's phone was ringing. She saw that it was Shelby and picked up the phone. "Hello?"

"Rachel, are you okay?" Shelby asked.

"Yeah," Rachel said. "Are you feeling okay?"

"Kylie called me and told me about what happened," Shelby said. "She said you and Finn are sleeping on the couch at Santana's girlfriend's apartment?"

"Yeah," Rachel said. There was no use in denying what happened. "Whoever broke into our apartment took our furniture and our clothes."

"Rachel, that's horrible," Shelby said. "I have a guest bedroom. Do you and Finn want to come stay at my place?"

"Shelby, you're sick, and you have a toddler," Rachel said.

"Beth loves you two," Shelby said. "And you and Finn wouldn't be any trouble."

"I'll think about that," Rachel said. "Thanks for checking up on me."

"If I can do anything, let me know," Shelby said.

Rachel hung up the phone and turned to Finn. "Shelby wants us to come stay with her in her guest room."

"Well, you two didn't look very comfortable on the couch last night," Santana pointed out.

"Kurt and Blaine are on a couch, too," Rachel said.

"Yeah, but Elliott's couch is a foldout couch, so it folds into a bed," Blaine said.

"Maybe you two should give it a try," Dani said.

"Yeah, you just had a traumatic experience," Sam said. "You should at the very least have a bed to sleep in."

"Well, I'll think about it," Rachel said. She was really just thinking the same thing she'd been thinking since they got home: why did this have to happen?

Chapter 33 preview: The New Yorkers continue to deal with the aftermath of having their apartment broken into. Finn and Rachel go to stay at Shelby's, but what will Rachel's dads think of that? And will Kylie's parents also find out? Important things are also coming up for Finchel and Klaine.
