A/N: Thank you for the awesome reviews, everyone!
It was the day of the rehearsal dinner and the day before the wedding. And Miley was feeling the pressure. Lilly had came over early that morning, more to keep her calm than anything. She kept reassuring her that everything had been taken care of. All she and Nick had to do was show up. But that didn't stop her nerves. Especially when she thought about what was going to happen that night.
So don't think about it. Don't give her the satisfaction of ruining your special day.
So she vowed to put it out of her mind until the time came. She would make this day the best that it could be. What happened later would happen. And the next day, she was getting married. By then, there wouldn't be anything else for her to worry about. She was going to make sure of it.
She was in the kitchen sipping on a glass of water when Lilly came into the room.
"Okay, Nick said to tell you that he's ready when you are. Your dad still isn't here, but I just talked to him and they're like two minutes away. Everybody else is already on their way to the park."
Miley nodded. "I can do this."
Lilly put her hands on her friend's shoulders. "Miley, all we're doing right now is rehearsing for the wedding. The dinner isn't until later. Calm down."
"But I won't have to give any speeches, right?"
"No. Speeches are completely optional. Especially when you're the bride."
No speeches. That was definitely good. Miley finished her glass and went to the living room as her family was coming in. "Hey, dad", she smiled as she hugged him.
He held on to her a little longer than usual. Probably because it was just kicking in that his little girl was really getting married. But she didn't mind.
"Big brother?", Miley said, turning to Jackson with open arms and a smile.
"You know you aren't getting me to cry until tomorrow, don't you?", he teased as he hugged her.
She laughed. "Well, you can't blame a girl for trying."
"Okay, everybody." They all turned to look at Nick, who had just came into the room. "You guys ready to do this or what?"
Miley looked around the park. It was always beautiful here, but the lack of decorations left her feeling a bit concerned. Her wedding was tomorrow evening, and literally nothing had been done.
"Uh, Lilly?", she spoke, her voice tinged with nerves.
"I know, I know", the blonde responded as she slipped her hair into a loose ponytail. "It'll look completely different by wedding time. I promise." She turned her attention to the rest of the wedding party. "Okay, people. Let's go through this."
She pointed to the giant gazebo. "Nick, you'll be close to the center on the right side. Well it'll be the left when you get up there but...never mind. Joe, you'll be beside him. Then Kevin. Then Frankie."
The guys all nodded, apparently not realizing that they were supposed to take their places.
"So go stand there", Lilly added, making Miley smile a bit.
The guys reluctantly went to do as they were told.
"Now, where are my bridesmen?", Lilly asked.
"Can't you come up with some other word for us?", Oliver complained as he and Jackson stepped forward. "Bridesmen sounds so...girly."
Miley couldn't suppress a laugh. She knew it would probably look strange to have Jackson and Oliver next to Lilly instead of two more girls. But hey, she was never one for doing things the same as everyone else. Besides, she was determined to have them play some role in her wedding.
Lilly just rolled her eyes in response to Oliver's whining. "What else would you rather be called?"
He and Jackson looked at each other, but neither of them could come up with anything.
"Where do we go?", Jackson finally asked in defeat.
The blonde smiled and pointed to the other side of the gazebo. "You two will be on the far left. But make sure to allow room for me and Miley."
Lilly turned to Miley with an excited grin. "This is the fun part." Then she slowly proceeded to walk across the small wooden bridge to the gazebo. "Now, I'll stand here next to Jackson. Mr. Stewart, you and Miley need to be ready by the time I start walking down the aisle. You guys are gonna follow Myles and Belle."
"You heard her, guys", Miley said to the kids, who then began to walk down the aisle.
"No no no", Lilly said, waving her arms for them to stop. "Myles, you're walking too fast. You have to stay in sync with Belle."
Nick looked at Joe with a quiet chuckle. "She sure takes this wedding planner stuff seriously, doesn't she?"
Joe just shook his head. "You don't know the half of it, bro."
Once the kids had gotten the sufficient distance ahead of them, Miley and Robbie Ray began to walk. Only to be stopped by Lilly.
"Hold on. Mr. Stewart, can you please not look like you're going to a funeral? This is supposed to be the happiest day of Miley's life, remember?"
"That doesn't mean it's the happiest day of my life", the older man pointed out. "I don't think any man would be particularly happy about giving their little girl away to some boy. No offense, Nick."
"None taken, sir."
Miley looked up at her dad. "You know that- just because I'm getting married- it doesn't mean that I'm not gonna be your little girl anymore. I'll always be your little girl. And you'll always be my daddy. That's never gonna change."
Robbie Ray forced a small smile and kissed his daughter on the forehead. "I love you, darlin'."
"I love you too", she smiled before taking his arm. "Shall we?"
Once they had gotten to the end of the aisle, Robbie Ray stepped aside. Miley grinned as she stood facing Nick. For a moment, it almost felt like this was the real deal. And as far as she was concerned, it could've been. If there was a preacher present, she would've exchanged vows with him right then and there.
"Okay", Lilly announced, getting their attention once again. "Miley, you'll give me your bouquet. The preacher does the whole 'We are gathered here today' thing and then the 'Does anybody have any objections?' thing."
Nick raised an eyebrow. "You left that part in?"
Miley let out a nervous laugh. "It's fine. Not like anybody's gonna try to stop our wedding." She was just thankful that her ex wasn't aware of the date change. Jake could claim that he had changed and he just wanted her to be happy all he wanted, but she wasn't about to risk him trying to ruin her wedding.
"So anyway", Lilly continued. "You'll say your vows. Myles gives you the rings, then you repeat what the preacher says. Then you walk out arm in arm, get in the carriage, and ride to your wedding reception. See. Not difficult."
Joe laughed. "You got them a carriage?"
"I think it's cute", Miley said in defense of her friend. This really was turning into a Cinderella wedding. But strangely enough, she liked it. What girl didn't want to feel like a princess on her wedding day?
"But then we get to eat cake, right?", Myles asked hopefully.
Nick smiled and ruffled his nephew's hair. "You got it, little man."
Miley knew this was a bad idea. Resting her eyes for a few moments was going to turn into a full-fledged nap. And she did not have the time for that. There was still so much to do. She had to get ready for the rehearsal dinner. She had to make sure everyone else was ready for the rehearsal dinner. But she was just too tired to do anything else at the moment.
"Knock, knock", she heard Nick say as he opened the bedroom door. Well, she supposed that was one way to keep her awake.
"What?", she groaned, not even attempting to open her eyes.
"Oh, do you want me to leave you alone for a little while?"
Uh, yeah. Kind of.
She let out a sigh. "No, I don't need to be sleeping now anyway." She forced her eyes open and looked at him. He was completely dressed for the dinner already. And looking amazing. Then there she was in her stretchy jeans and an old, stained T-shirt.
"You feeling okay?", Nick asked, sitting down on the bed next to her.
Miley nodded as she sat up. "Yeah, just tired. Being pregnant can occasionally have that effect on you. You're fine one minute, then the next- you just want to sleep for the rest of the day. And this day isn't even close to being over."
He appeared to think for a moment before he looked at her again. "Miley, I don't think you should go tonight."
"Nick, I have to go. I'm the one that the note was addressed to", she reminded him. "Besides, there's no way I would let you go alone."
"I can take care of myself."
"What if she has a gun? She could kill you."
"I have one too", Nick pointed out. He had went out and bought a gun just for this purpose. It made him nervous, as he had never actually owned one before. But it would be stupid to confront a psychopath without one.
"Well since you have everything planned out, why don't you want me to go?", Miley wondered. "It'll be two against one. I can help you."
"Miley, you aren't in any condition to be fighting someone!", he said, exasperated.
"This is my fight", she replied firmly. "You can stand by my side, but you can't fight it for me. And no matter what you say, I'm not going to change my mind."
He knew that she meant that. Miley was just too stubborn for her own good sometimes. But since she was determined to do this, he had to make sure that she stayed safe. Because if anything happened to her or their baby...he wouldn't be able to go on. He couldn't lose them.
"So, are we still on the same page with how this is gonna go down?", she asked slowly.
Nick nodded. But Miley felt the need to go through it again one more time, just to be safe.
"When the rehearsal dinner's over, I go check into my hotel room. You come back here. Then you come pick me up at eleven, and we go together. Right?"
"I don't see why you can't just stay here", he stated.
"Because the bride and groom are not supposed to see each other the day of the wedding until the wedding", Miley explained for what must have been the fifth time. "It's bad luck. And if I was here, it would be kind of impossible to avoid."
"Maybe I don't believe in bad luck", Nick said quietly. "Maybe I believe that you make your own luck in this world."
"I believe that too. But that doesn't mean I'm willing to play around with superstitions. I mean, they've been around this long for a reason." She stood up and forced a small smile. "I need to get ready. We've got a rehearsal dinner to attend."
Robbie Ray's eyes scanned the living room, searching for something to help with. He could only sit idle for so long, after all. Last he checked, Miley had went upstairs...and never really came back down. Lilly was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, trying to make sure everything was just so. One of his grandkids was chasing the poor cat around the house, and he honestly had no clue where the other one was.
But quite frankly, the man was bored.
"No, what I need is for you to stop calling me every ten minutes."
He glanced at his very annoyed son, who had walked into the room with his cell phone in hand.
"For the fifteenth time, I can't deal with you right now. Miley's rehearsal dinner is tonight, and I'm not going to let you get me in a bad mood."
Robbie Ray let out a sigh. If there was one person that he disliked as much as Miley's ex-boyfriend, it was Jackson's ex-wife. As much as he loved his children, they didn't always make the best choices.
"What? No, I'm not lying. Why would I lie about my sister getting married tomorrow?" Jackson looked up and noticed his dad standing there. "Look, I have to go. And I'm turning my phone off."
With that, he hung up. "I'm an idiot, dad."
Robbie Ray patted his son on the back. "No you aren't. You couldn't have known how crazy that girl was gonna turn out to be."
"I should've. I mean, she was a little bit out there when we got married. But now, I would be scared to leave Cory alone with her. She'd probably take him and flee to Canada or something."
"We aren't gonna give her the chance to do something like that", his dad assured him. "Don't let her ruin Miley's wedding for you. This time is about your sister."
Jackson shook his head. "My sister who would probably be furious if she found out all of this."
"If I found out what?"
They both turned at the sound of Miley's voice. She was now wearing a loose purple dress. Her hair was swept up, only leaving a few strays to frame her face. She looked stunning.
"You look beautiful, baby doll", Robbie Ray said softly.
Miley smiled. "Thank you, dad." Then she looked at Jackson. "So, what were y'all talking about? What would make me furious if I found out?"
Her dad and brother just looked at each other, neither of them answering her question. Which made her slightly nervous.
"Hey, Mi?" She forced a small smile, noticing Nick in the doorway with Belle by his side. "Somebody wanted her mom to see her dress", he informed her.
Belle gave them a playful twirl, showing off her hot pink dress. The child had been dying to wear it since Miley had bought it three weeks ago.
"You look amazing, baby", she said, pulling her daughter into a hug.
"Just like her mama", Robbie Ray added with a faint smile, remembering Miley at that age. But his little girl had grown up. And she had found the happiness that he always prayed she would find. He was truly thankful for that.
"So, are we about ready to go?", Nick asked her.
Miley glanced back at her brother, unwilling to simply forget the statement she had overheard. "Well actually-"
"Don't worry about it. it's nothing important", Jackson said in a tone that didn't really reassure her.
"Jackson-"
"I mean it, Miles. It's nothing for you to worry about", he insisted.
She didn't believe her brother, but it wasn't like she had all day to pry it out of him. So she reluctantly looked back at Nick. "Okay. Let's do this."
