Hi guys! Thanks so much for the reviews on the last chapter. I appreciate them. I know several birthdays are mentioned in this chapter. Finn's birthday was listed on Glee wiki, so I went with that one. I'm not sure when Beth's is, but since Regionals is usually in March, I went with a day in March. I always love writing Glee families, so this was a fun one to write. Enjoy and review if I should keep going!

Happy Thanksgiving to any Canadian readers, too!

Chapter 53: Mother's Day

"What time are the others coming again?" Mercedes asked. This morning, Blaine had sent texts to Sam, Artie and Tina, telling them to come to the apartment. He didn't tell them that Mercedes would be there though.

"I told them to be here at eleven," Blaine said.

"So, how was your first night in New York?" Rachel asked Mercedes.

"It was great," Mercedes said. "You guys do have a comfortable couch."

"Don't worry, we'll get you a bed," Santana said. "And like I said, there's enough room to put a bed for you in my room."

"You guys really lucked out with this apartment," Mercedes commented. "It's so nice."

"Well, our old one had to get broken into in order for us to find this one," Finn said. "But we are happy where we are now."

"Not to mention we got a few months of not having to worry about rent with the money we got out of the trial!" Kurt added.

"I am glad this was when I came to New York," Mercedes said. "Now I get to be here for all the wedding shenanigans."

"You can help me, Kurt and Tina out with Rachel's bachelorette party," Santana said with a wink.

The look on Santana's face made Finn nervous. "What do you have in mind for Rachel's bachelorette party?"

"We can't tell you!" Santana said. "It's a girl thing."

"Sam and I have been planning Finn's bachelor party," Blaine said. "We've had to reject multiple ideas from Puck."

"You guys can tell him that there will be no strippers at my bachelor party," Finn told Blaine.

"That was one of the ideas we rejected," Blaine said.

"I'm glad to see some people haven't changed," Mercedes commented. "So, just so both you guys know, I'll be singing at both your receptions."

"We want everyone from Glee, past and present, to sing at our reception," Finn said. "Rachel and I are having a first duet, in addition to a first dance."

Kurt looked at Blaine. "We should do that, too."

"What song do you two think you'll sing?" Mercedes asked.

"Faithfully, of course," Rachel said proudly. "Kurt and Blaine will be singing our first dance song." She turned to them. "That reminds me, did you pick one out yet?"

"We were thinking Can You Feel The Love Tonight by Elton John," Blaine said.

"I love that song!" Finn said.

"What about you two?" Kurt asked. "Did you two pick out one to sing for our first dance?"

"We're still in the process of choosing one," Finn admitted.

"Well, we trust you to pick a good one," Kurt said.

The group heard a knock on the door and went to it. "Guess who's here?" Santana said as she opened the door.

Artie looked inside. "It's my girl!" He wheeled inside and gave Mercedes a hug.

"Hey guys!" Mercedes said as she hugged Sam and Tina as well.

"How long are you in New York for?" Artie asked.

"All summer!" Mercedes said. "I'm here to look for inspiration for a solo album."

"I'm so glad you're here," Sam said, as Tina looked on, looking a little uneasy.

"So, are you staying here?" Tina asked.

"I'm going to be sharing Santana's room," Mercedes said.

"Oh," Sam said. "The three of us are getting an apartment in this building too after classes get out for the year."

Mercedes looked excited. "So I'll get to see you all the time!"

"I can't wait," Sam said.

Finn looked at Blaine. Their suspicions from last night had been right. Sam was very excited to see Mercedes. Maybe more excited than most boys would be to see a girl they weren't dating anymore. Mercedes seemed excited to see Sam too. It probably didn't help that Tina could tell, and that they all knew that Mike was happily in a relationship with a girl in Chicago.

Rachel clearly noticed the tension as well. "Maybe you'll get to see Puck and Quinn soon too, Mercedes. Since they don't live too far away, they come here every now and then."

"That would be awesome!" Mercedes said.

"And then of course we're going to Boston for Nationals in a few weeks," Santana said.

"We were robbed last year," Tina complained. "We should have won."

"Your songs were pretty amazing," Finn said.

"Kylie thinks they have a good shot this year," Rachel said. "She told me they're doing Disney music."

Finn had already known that, but he couldn't tell them that because Mr. Schue had told him not to talk about their conversation.

"That's so awesome!" Kurt said.

"Yeah, it is," Rachel agreed.

Today was Mother's Day, Rachel's first time celebrating Mother's Day with her mother. Because of this, she wanted to go all out. She'd set her alarm for early and caught a train to Shelby's townhouse. She still had a key from when she lived there, so she tried to open the door and go upstairs as quietly as she could, tiptoeing upstairs to Beth's room and nudging Beth.

Beth opened her eyes. "Rachel!"

"Sh!" Rachel whispered. "I'm here to give Mom a Mother's Day surprise. Want to help?"

Beth jumped up. "Yes!"

"Come on," Rachel whispered. "Let's go downstairs and make Mommy some breakfast." She led Beth downstairs. "Want to make her some pancakes?"

"Yeah!" Beth agreed. "I wish Kylie was here."

"I wish she could be here too, but she has school tomorrow and she has to be with her other mommy," Rachel said. "But you'll get to see her soon, for Nationals."

"Yay!" Beth exclaimed. "Rachel, can I have a pancake too?"

"Of course you can," Rachel said, making the pancakes. "But we're going to bring these up to Mommy in bed."

"Yeah," Beth added. "Do you think she'll be surprised?"

Rachel smiled. "I bet she will." She put some pancakes on a plate and put some fruit around the pancakes. "Ready to go see Mommy?"

"Yes!" Beth said. The girls went upstairs and opened the door of Shelby's room. Beth climbed on to the bed and nudged Shelby. "Happy Mother's Day Mommy!"

Shelby sat up. "Rachel, what are you doing here?"

"I came over to surprise you for Mother's Day," Rachel said.

"Well, this is a nice surprise," Shelby said.

"Well, you are our mom, so we wanted to do something special," Rachel said, handing Shelby the plate as she gave her a hug. "Happy Mother's day."

"This looks like a good breakfast," Shelby commented.

"Rachel mostly made it, but I helped!" Beth told Shelby.

"Thank you, both of you," Shelby said, hugging the girls. She started to eat the breakfast. "This is delicious."

"Can I go get my pancake now?" Beth asked.

Rachel picked up Beth. "Yeah, let's go. I'd like one, too."

"I just got a text from Dad, they're almost here," Kurt told Finn. The two of them were sitting at a table at a restaurant not too far from the loft where they'd gotten Mother's Day brunch reservations. Since Burt and Carole were spending two straight weeks in DC for Congress business, Finn and Kurt had suggested they come to New York for Mother's Day weekend. However, Carole didn't know that her sons had made the brunch reservations.

Finn gave Kurt a half smile. "Awesome. I can't wait to see them."

"Me either," Kurt said.

Burt and Carole came into the restaurant. "Finn, Kurt, is this for me?" Carole asked.

"Well of course!" Finn said, getting up to give his mom a hug. "Happy Mother's Day, Mom."

"Thank you honey," Carole said.

Kurt turned to Burt. "So you managed to keep it all a secret?"

"Yup," Burt confirmed. "I didn't tell her you two made brunch reservations today."

"Well, we wanted to," Kurt said, pulling out a chair for his stepmother.

"Before the food gets here, Mom, I want to give you something," Finn said, getting out a wrapped package.

"Finn!" Carole exclaimed. "You didn't have to. You're in college, you don't work very much and you're getting married in a few weeks..."

"Of course he did!" Burt said. "Open it!"

Carole opened the package, and Finn looked on smiling as she opened it. Finn had put together a photo collage of photos of him and his mom through the years. In the very center was a photo of Carole holding Finn the day he was born.

"Remember that day?" Finn asked his mom.

"Of course I do," Carole said. "Hard to believe it's going to be twenty years this summer."

"Finnegan Christopher Hudson, August 24, 1994, 5:11 p.m., 9 pounds 4 ounces, 25 inches long," Kurt recited.

Finn gave his brother a playful slap. "Hey!"

"Your mom still has your birth announcement on display in our living room at their house," Kurt said.

"Hey, we have yours too," Burt said.

Finn decided to return the tease. "Kurt E. Hummel, May 27, 1994, 7 pounds 6 ounces, 20 inches long."

"Guess you were bigger than me from the beginning," Kurt said. He reached into his bag. "Carole, I got you something, too."

Carole took the package from Kurt. "Thank you Kurt!" She unwrapped it to reveal a diamond necklace. "Kurt, this is beautiful."

"You can wear it to the weddings," Kurt said.

"I will," Carole said.

"It's hard to believe you're both going to be married men in a few weeks," Burt commented.

"I know," Finn said. "It's crazy." He couldn't be happier though.

"We're so excited for you two to get married," Burt added. "You couldn't have found better people."

"We got lucky," Kurt said. "Just think, in a few years, Finn might be preparing something for Rachel on Mother's Day."

Finn was taken aback by Kurt's comment. He knew he wanted kids with Rachel. He'd always wanted to. But maybe "a few years" was too soon.

"What's up with that look, Finn?" Carole asked.

"Rachel and I haven't had that conversation yet," Finn admitted.

"Well, Kurt's mom and I didn't either," Burt admitted. "He just sort of happened."

"Yeah, and I know how I happened," Finn teased his mom. "On a pinball machine!"

Burt looked at Carole. "Finn was conceived on a pinball machine?"

Carole looked down. "Guilty."

"Wow," Kurt said. "I didn't expect that from you."

The waiter came over to the table where the family was sitting. "Are you almost ready to order?"

"Yeah," Kurt said. He motioned to himself and Finn. "Just so you know, the bill will be split between the two of us."

"Boys - " Burt began.

"It's mother's day," Finn interrupted. "So it's our treat."

"How's Mother's Day going?" Kylie asked on the Skype screen. Right now, Rachel, Beth and Shelby were skyping with Kylie.

"It's going great, thank you for asking, honey," Shelby said. "Your sisters made me a lovely breakfast in bed."

"Awww, I wish I could have helped," Kylie said.

"I'll see you very soon for Nationals, though," Shelby said.

"Maybe now I should give her the gift from all three of us," Rachel told Kylie on the screen.

"Yes, give it to her!" Kylie said.

"What?" Shelby asked.

"You'll see," Rachel said, handing Shelby a package with the gift that she and Kylie had picked out for Shelby. She'd told Beth about it as well.

Shelby took the wrapping paper off the box and then took the lid off. There was a silver necklace with three charms. One said "Rachel" on one said and "12-18-93" on the other. One said "Kylie" on one side and "7-15-98" on the other. And the third said "Beth" on one side and "3-15-10" on the other.

"Girls, this is beautiful," Shelby said.

"We thought you'd like it," Rachel said.

Shelby put on the necklace. "Thank you. I love it." She looked back at Kylie on the screen. "So how's Mother's Day going for your family back in Lima?"

"Dad and I took Mom out to lunch today," Kylie said. "I also picked some flowers for her. I'd send some to you in New York, but they don't travel well."

"Well, I appreciate the gift from you girls," Shelby said. "I'll see you at Nationals. I love you, honey."

"I love you too, " Kylie said as she logged off Skype.

"This was a really nice present," Shelby said, looking at Rachel.

"Thanks," Rachel said. "Finn's mom has one with his and Kurt's name on it and I thought we should get you one with ours."

"Well, it's lovely," Shelby said as the doorbell rang. "I wonder who that is?"

"I'll get it," Rachel said. She went to the door and saw Puck and Quinn. "Hi guys!"

"Hey," Puck said. "We were in New York and... we thought we'd stop by."

"Come on in," Rachel said. She whispered to Quinn. "Happy Mother's Day."

"Thanks," Quinn whispered. "I just wanted to see her today."

"Of course you do," Rachel whispered back. She led Puck and Quinn up to the room where Shelby and Beth were. "We have some visitors!"

Beth jumped off the bed and ran over to give her birth parents hugs. "Puck! Quinn!"

Puck picked up Beth. "Hey Beth!"

"Me and Rachel made Mommy breakfast for Mother's Day," Beth told them.

"You did?" Quinn asked.

"Yeah!" Beth said. "And me, Rachel and Kylie gave her a necklace."

"That was nice of you," Puck said.

"Yeah," Beth said. "I want to show you some of my new toys." She led Quinn and Puck to her bedroom, leaving Rachel and Shelby in the living room.

"I'm glad they came to see her today," Shelby said.

"Me too," Rachel said. "We should probably tell her eventually..."

"Yeah, we should," Shelby agreed. "It's all just so complicated. I know she understands that you and Kylie have other parents but..."

"Yeah, I know," Rachel said.

A few minutes later, Puck, Quinn and Beth came back. "Beth drew a picture for us," Quinn said.

"Yeah I did!" Beth exclaimed.

"It's like a mother's day gift," Quinn whispered to Rachel.

Rachel smiled at her friend. She was thinking the same thing.

"I'm glad that our parents could come visit today," Finn said to Kurt as they hung out in the apartment. Right now, Blaine and Santana were at the diner, and Rachel was still at Shelby's. Burt and Carole had just headed back to DC.

"Yeah, me too," Kurt said. "Finn - do you ever miss him?"

"Who?" Finn asked.

"Your dad," Kurt said. "I love your mom, but I always miss my mom on Mother's Day. And with my wedding coming up... I just wish she could be there."

Finn sort of understood what Kurt was talking about. Since he never knew his dad, it wasn't the same like it was for Kurt. He was at the point now where he mostly considered Burt Hummel his dad. "Well, I guess since I never knew him it's not quite the same for me, but I do think about him," Finn admitted.

"I'm getting married and she's not going to be here for it," Kurt pointed out.

"That must be tough," Finn said.

"Our weddings are supposed to be the most perfect days of our lives, but I won't have my mom with me for my wedding," Kurt sighed.

Finn gave Kurt a hug. "I know. You'll have your dad though, and my mom, and me. And I know your mom would be so happy that you found Blaine and that you're marrying him."

"Your dad would be really happy to see you marrying Rachel, too," Kurt told Finn.
