Katniss Pov
The numbing sense was still there, but then, I could feel a burning sensation run across my skin. The icy wind that was blowing on me was strange for this island; the coldest thing I have ever felt since I came to this island was fresh river water…
Fresh river water… Glimmer tossed me in, Cato saved me, and I almost died. As soon as the memories flooded back, my eyes shot open. Darkness surrounded me, but I saw a slight flicker of light in the corner of my eye. Voices were echoing in the open air, and each of them said something that had to do with Glimmer. "We need to get rid of her before she kills us all. If she did that to the one person that could keep us alive on the island, what would she do to us?" a small voice that I knew belonged to Prim chirped.
"I agree, but we can't kill her. Savage behavior and ideas are ridiculous and we are above them. We need to be smart about this. I say we have someone watching her at all times. I don't know about you, but I would prefer not having a psycho killer on the loose." Foxy replies, speaking above the quiet chatter that had started from Prim's statement.
"Well, I do believe it is my choice, it is my island after all." I call out, my voice was stronger then I felt. I attempted to get up, but all of the muscles in my body screamed at me to sit down. Ignoring the burning pain, I stood from my position on my mat in the main shack, walking through the open wall arch to the small gathering that surrounded the fire pit. "Glimmer's a bitch, but no one deserves death. I think it's time I start taking better control of this situation. From now on, I don't know if I can trust you, so there for, I want everyone back here by dark, if not you will be considered suspicious. Three strikes and your out, literally. You can take a little of the storage food, your sleeping mat and you can leave. Are we clear?" I knew this was cold, but I had to be sure. I was not risking anyone else's safety. I wasn't sure who didn't like who here, if they had a past or not, hell, even if they came from the same district.
"What!" their reactions were simultaneous, all of either anger, shock or a combination of both. "You cannot be serious!" Cato exclaims, shooting up. "We have done so much for you, but still you treat us like prisoners."
"Yes. Remember this. I saved your lives, so I can just as easily call my forest friends back to finish the job. I have done plenty for you, I let you stay in my house, I have given you food and water, and yet one of you tried to kill me!" I said, turning back to the hut. "If Glimmer steps out of place, she's gone."
Cato Pov
This is ridiculous! She has no right to control us like that! "She cannot be serious!" Marvel grumbles, his eyes narrowed at her retreating figure.
"She has the right to be angry. Just not with us. But we need to play this smart. We wouldn't survive a night in the wild without this place. Be nice, and be back by sun down. Simple." Foxy says intelligently, staring intently into the fire. Prim and Clove were nodding, looking into the hut where Katniss was sleeping on her mat.
"Well, I think we can do what we want!" a high-pitched voice says from behind us. There stood Glimmer, smirking at us. "She isn't queen, she doesn't own this island. Even if she is uncivilized, I doubt she's stupid enough to send wild creatures on a group of trained fighters and healers. If we work together, we can survive with out her… what do you say?" Marvel nodded, along with Thresh. I found myself nodding as well, but as soon as I realized what I was agreeing to, I stopped. "I think we should take what we can, and make our own camp."
Shock. That was what covered every single persons face. So many of us would probably die of sickness, hyperthermia or hunger. We needed to stick together, not split up and become easy targets. I shifted uncomfortably under Glimmers gaze. She probably thought I would be the first person to side with her, but I was probably going to be the last person that joins her. Katniss may be young, but she isn't stupid. She will keep us safe. She knows what happens on this island. I lowered my gaze from Glimmer, making a choice to stay here.
Silence consumed us, but then Marvel stood up, walking over to Glimmer. Thresh looked down at Rue, then over at Marvel and Glimmer. Lifting Rue off his lap, he walked over to join the others. The rest of us looked at them in disappointment, but said nothing as we went to get our sleeping mats.
In the morning, Thresh, Marvel and Glimmer were gone, along with three sleeping mats, some dried food and three wooden spears.
