As you can imagine, this is the duel with Jaylin and Ronda. I have finally started giving some character development for Carl in the last chapter, since I feel bad for not ever mentioning it in the other previous chapters. The same can be said about Ronda. They're not just BFF replacements for Jaylin and feel they deserve a little more credit. Review please!
"I don't see how this is going to improve my training, not that I'm complaining or doubting you... in fact you've done weirder stuff than this when training me," Jaylin said over the phone, staring at a small booklet in her hand.
"How is that weird and what have I done that's actually weird when training you?" Yugi asked
"Well, one time you trained me by making me go camping alone... I was ten by the way."
"Okay, so that was a bit out there, and risking people calling the police on my ass, but it did improve your training and I knew you were at the right age... with the capability to do it, compared to most girls at that age, that is."
"Well, I do have the powers of hell itself, it was in a small cabin with a stove, and oven, and refrigerator full of food, and it was only for one day. I still don't see how reading your old journal is going to help."
"Have you tried reading it?"
"NNNNNo?"
"Then, how can you know how it's going to help you improve?" Yugi asked as he heard Jaylin giggle slightly. "Listen Princess, you're growing up to becoming an adult, and there are things you need to keep in mind for the future. You are in better control over your powers than I was at your age, and you won't have to go through half the stuff I went through, but you will still go through a bit of them. It's time you learned how to deal with your powers. You have a gift that your peers are not used to."
"I guess," Jaylin replied.
"I'm serious, Jaylin. Your peers are fine now, because you're protected by my direction and guidance on when and how you use them. A time will come when you will be the ONLY person with those powers. Whether you find another person with the same powers, or level, as you is a slight chance, but you'll still find yourself in that same situation. You're lucky that you have a parent that knows this stuff, but the time will come when you're alone and I won't be there to help you in and out of whatever situation you find yourself in. If you make a decision on when and how you use those powers, it could effect on how people see you, and not just your peers, but your friends too. Ronda might understand you more, but even she will see who you are depending on when and how you use your powers. Your actions will determine your fate and that's something that you will have to live with for the rest of your life."
"Yes Daddy."
"Use the time you have at the age of having my protective barriers to learn through my experiences as a dark user. You know what you can do. What I can do is only half of the capabilities you possess. After you learn one half, the rest of it is yours alone."
"I'll read this. As I stated, I trust you," Jaylin promised.
"That's my girl! Anyways, I have to get going. I'll call you when I get the time. Bye!" Yugi said, hanging up as Jaylin stared at Yugi's old journal, sighing. Yugi usually never wrote journals, since literature wasn't his thing and it was more of a girl thing to write diaries. He usually got bored when writing things down. He would rather play games, though this entire journal was written to record events that happened during one fateful year.
Jaylin bit the corner of her bottom lip and began reading, 'I normally don't write journals, but I feel I must record my daily blog, because I'm alone now. I've run away from home to protect my family and friends from myself. I'm hurting and killing too many people to be safe anywhere, so here I am. I summoned Curse of Dragon to fly over to Oshima Island, of course scaring several people to death. Why did Yami give me these stupid powers? I never asked for them! I did bring some food and money with me and I bought this little booklet from the gift shop. I'm just running and will keep on running until I get away from civilization. It's my mission to avoid any contact as much as possible. I've reached the 208 street and heading down to 207 street, which should take me into the countryside. I need to do this by foot, just in case someone notices me and calls the authorities, so more people would be hurt by me. It's already bad enough people have noticed Curse of Dragon, but hopefully the authorities would think those people were crazy. Nobody will get hurt. I hope I made the right decision. I think I did.' "Well, that was short! I guess this was during the days Daddy disappeared during his Senior year of High School."
Carl entered inside the dorm room, where Jaylin was reading her father's journal, and announced, "school's starting in 15 minutes and you need to prepare for your duel with Ronda."
"No worries. Already have my deck ready. I'm just doing a little reading," Jaylin replied happily.
"What is it?"
"My dad's old journal. He wants me to read it as part of my training."
"Weird."
"Yeah. Though, it's during his Senior year of High School, so there should be some good stuff there."
"You mean like how he fell in love with your mom?"
"Uh... not really," Jaylin replied, blushing slightly. "In fact, I doubt if she's even in this journal."
"Ah. Is it before they met?"
"Ye...ah... Sorta."
"I see. So, why is it interesting?"
"Because this was when my Daddy ran away from home."
"Why did he do that?"
"He had dark powers, and kept hurting or killing people. Daddy is very anti when it comes to violence and fighting. He hates it with a passion. When he was given dark powers, he couldn't control them or his emotions and things just went... not good. He went through a faze with wanting to get away from everything, and run away from his problems... sorta. It was kind of a dark, and yet, interesting time."
"Wow... I kinda feel sorry for him."
"Yeah. He says he doesn't want the same thing to happen to me, and is training me as much as he can."
"That's a good thing."
"Yep!" Jaylin grinned in response. She continued reading her father's journal, learning more about the journey Yugi took after running from home. Alot of the chapters were short, so it didn't take long to go through a month or two of that journal before having to dress and arrive at class on time.
Professor Banner was feeding his cat by the time Jaylin dashed into the classroom. He smiled and said, "so, you finally decide to make it to class early? It wouldn't happen to have something to do with your duel today, would it?"
"What would make you say that?" Jaylin teased as the professor chuckled slightly. "Daddy says he wants me to read his old journal from his Senior year as part of my training."
"Then, I will see to it that you do. How many pages have you read so far?"
"Each chapter is short, so about over a month or two worth of pages."
"Good."
Jaylin walked to her seat to prepare her deck and check over it. She wasn't too worried about her deck arrangement, but wanted to double check. Ronda didn't appear in class until five minutes before the start. By that time, Jaylin's deck was already set and ready to go.
Filled with excitement, Jaylin dashed from the classroom to the auditorium by the time school was over. She changed from her school shoes, then shuffled her deck. She walked over to the bottom of the duel stage, Dr. Crowler making the announcement.
"It is time for the next duel! Jaylin Yuki versus Ronda Layo! Let's give these young duelists a round of applause!" Dr. Crowler announced as the entire student body applauded loudly.
Jaylin had watched Ronda duel other previous opponents and knew she gained some audience for herself. Most Slifer Red students usually gain a ton of audience from the first duel, explaining why Jaylin already had an audience of her own on her first duel. This would be Jaylin's first duel against another Slifer Red duelist, since being chosen as the 128 duelist. Jaylin was more than excited, especially given that she would be dueling her best friend. They had teamed up and dueled together, now they were dueling against each other.
Jaylin and Ronda climbed onto the stage, then shuffled their decks. They played Rock-Paper-Scissors and Jaylin won. They both drew five cards, Jaylin drawing her sixth one.
"I play Elemental Hero Frost Blade!" Jaylin declared as a small man in ice armor appeared boldly onto the field. "Then, I'll throw down three face-downs and end my turn!" The audience clapped, since it was the end of Jaylin's turn.
"Alright then!" Ronda replied, drawing her next card. "I summon The Fabled Cerburrel!" A three-headed red cat, each head wearing a yellow crown with purple designs. A chain leash wrapped around the creature's neck, held by a little purple demon with huge green eyes. "I place two cards face-down, then have my Cerburrel attack your Frost Blade!" The Fabled Cerburrel began prancing right after Elemental HERO Frost Blade as Jaylin showed a smirk.
"You activated my trap card, Swamp of the Fallen!" Jaylin declared as The Fabled Cerburrel's attack reduced to 500 and Elemental HERO Frost Blade shot ice cycles from its hands, bursting the monster from the field and leaving Ronda with 3700 life points remaining.
"I use Cerburrel's effect to summon it back to the field!" Ronda declared as her three-headed cat reappeared, only in defense mode. "Then, I play Card Destruction!" Her and Jaylin discarded their entire hand to the graveyard, and drew the same number of cards they discarded. "I end." The audience clapped for the end of Ronda's turn.
Jaylin drew her next card, then looked through her hand. She declared, "I'm gonna bring out Elemental Hero Heat!" The super hero in a flaming costume appeared onto the field with 2000 attack points due to its effect. "He attacks your Cerburrel!" Elemental HERO Heat lifted its hands and shot a blast of fire toward The Fabled Cerburrel, bursting it from the field, before it returned back to the field.
"Did you already forget about Cerburrel's special ability?" Ronda smirked as Jaylin groaned.
"Right... I guess I end this turn," Jaylin sighed as the audience clapped to declare the end of her turn.
Ronda drew her next card, then said, "I play Pot of Greed!" She drew two cards. "The two cards I just drew I will tribute to bring out my Fabled Soulkius!" A ripped demon man-like monster with purple skin, black armor, mighty black wings on his back and a black wing on each wrist. "I also change Cerburrel to attack mode!"
"Oh boy!"
"Oh boy is right! Soulkius attacks your Heat!" Ronda smirked as Fabled Soulkius soared over toward Heat and Jaylin slowly showed a smirk.
"I reveal my trap card, Hero Barrier!" Jaylin revealed as an invisible barrier appeared in front of Elemental HERO Heat.
"Not so fast, I also reveal my trap, Trap Jammer, followed by Heavy Storm!" Ronda smirked as mist appeared from under Jaylin's trap card, bursting it from the field. Then, a huge storm attacked the two Spell and Trap Card Zones, destroying every trap and spell card on the fields.
"Damnit!" Jaylin cried out before watching her Elemental HERO Heat burst from the field from Fabled Soulkius' attack. Jaylin now had 3800 life points remaining.
"My Cerburrel attacks Frost Blade as well. Heat and cold never were compatible anyways," Ronda smirked before The Fabled Cerburrel pounced, scratched and tore Elemental HERO Frost Blade limb from limb until it was nothing but icicles, then burst from the field. Jaylin now was left with 3600 life points remaining. "I place one card face-down and end my turn."
At the front row of the audience, all of Jaylin's friends sat and watched the duel from afar. Syrus bit the corner of his bottom lip like he was calculating something. Alexis showed a slight smirk at the duel, finding so much interest in watching her two close friends deck it out against each other. Atticus had his iPhone out, recording the duel between the two Slifer Red girls. He was planning on making money off of the high view ratings on YouTube, since the tag-team with Jaylin and Chazz against the Princeton brothers was a huge success.
"This is amazing! Jaylin is very good and Ronda was able to wipe out all her monsters and face-down cards in a single blow. That's alot of power," Bastion commented.
"Ronda is the first Slifer Red duelist Jaylin has ever played against in this official competition. The last two duelists were a Ra Yellow and an Obelisk Blue student. This makes all the difference, since Slifer Red students' biggest talent is Duel Monsters," Zane commented.
"I agree. The Slifer Red students are the toughest duelists, because of their biggest skill in Duel Monsters. Jaylin or Ronda could own this duel."
"Jaylin's going to win this one," Alexis declared.
"Normally, I'd disagree with you, but I've seen how Jaylin dueled with Chazz against his brothers. She was able to use her low level monsters to her advantage and make up a number of different combos with that deck. Only a real skilled duelist knows how to do that. I've only seen pro duelists with that kind of talent," Carl commented, furrowing her eyebrows slightly. "It still baffles me how Jaylin can do that. When she said her father was a pro duelist, I was thinking maybe he was one of those skilled duelists that go to a few major competitions in Japan, but Jaylin has incredible skills. I've only seen those in duelists that have been dueling all across the globe. It makes me wonder who Jaylin's father is."
"Jaylin did say she was going to win this competition. It seemed like she was being cocky, but do you think she actually is putting her money where her mouth is?" Bastion wondered.
"I kinda wonder that too."
A/N: I am thinking of making an extra fan fiction prequel that's Yugi's Journal, which is the same one that Jaylin is reading. Though, the chapters will be short, due to Yugi not being good at literature and only recording things he sees. I will only write it, if you want me to. Let me know your opinion on the idea.
Also, someone addressed me that The Fabled Cerburrel's effect of discarding it to the graveyard to special summon means placing it from your hand to the graveyard, not just it going to the graveyard. That was my fault for making assumptions like that. Usually, when I look up effects, it explains that the card has to go from the hand to the graveyard and the effects of this monster never mentioned that.
