Here's the next chapter! I'm sorry I haven't been posting chapters. I had been sick and it was hard for me to catch up on my work. I am still working on this story. No worries. Review please!
A helicopter was flying on its way to Duel Academy. Inside it was an older man in a wheelchair named Kagemaru. He was staring at the building that was Duel Academy. He was extremely angry, mainly at Professor Banner, who failed at taking out that monster, Jaylin Yuki. He knew what kind of girl she really was. He had believed Professor Banner would know too. Either way, it all started a year ago.
"I'm promoting Jaylin Yuki as head of security at Kaiba Corporation!" Seto Kaiba announced, showing a young teenage girl, who seemed to be finishing Middle School. She wore a pink hoody over a white shirt with jeans and tennis shoes.
"Sir, she's only 14. Can you expect her to handle a job like this?" A security officer asked in concern.
"Are you questioning me?"
"N-No sir!"
"Good," Seto smirked, then turned to Jaylin. "I expect promise from you, Miss Yuki."
"Thank you, Mr. Kaiba," Jaylin thanked Seto, giving a small bow before looking at the Security Officers. "Continue on." The security officers did what Jaylin said as she turned to the Super Attendant, Kagemaru, grinning and waving. He only nodded before Jaylin continued her job.
Jaylin seemed to be fine with being the head of security in Kaiba Corp, despite all the criticisms. Kagemaru never questioned Seto Kaiba. This was the same guy, who started running the company at such a young age, arguably the same age as the girl. Perhaps he saw something in Jaylin. Though, she seemed like a fragile girl, Kagemaru knew there had to be more to her than her optimism and perky personality.
This would be shown only a few months after she was declared the head of Security. Someone had broken into Kaiba Corporation and intended on robbing it. Every security officer had their guns ready, but couldn't catch the thief. He was incredibly slick and unnoticed. This guy knew the entire place like he lived there. He was unpredictable.
Just when he got to the bank, the officers pointed their guns at him.
"Freeze, punk!" One security officer shouted.
The thief used some sort of strange magic to pin the officers to the wall. The breath was knocked out of all of them and they were rendered useless.
"You're all pathetic!" The thief grinned before shadows began engulfing the room and the officers began realizing that the thief's eyes were crimson red. They couldn't move and they realized they were no longer in Kaiba Corporation's main bank, but a place filled with darkness. "I shall challenge all of you to a little game."
"I'll join in!" A voice game from the security officers. It was their leader, whose eyes were now gold and her face filled with seriousness.
"I knew I felt a powerful presence in this building and here I thought it was the King of Games," the Thief smirked.
Jaylin smirked, almost laughing, before replying, "you're funny. I'll be your main opponent. What are the rules?"
"I don't have any game pieces on me, so we'll use your team. There will be a maze only you can see, but your team will only see you. The objective is that they must follow you to get out of the maze. The rules are simple. Once you enter, you must not look at your team. Your team must also be with you when you're out of the maze. If one wonders off and falls, then you will automatically lose. You must also not talk to them. Do we have a deal?"
Jaylin looked back at her team. The security officers nodded as Jaylin declared, "let the games begin."
The officers found themselves no longer pinned and instead in the middle of darkness where only Jaylin in their sights. Other than her, neither of them could see each other.
"Steven, where are you!" One officer shouted.
"Charles! Charles!" The other shouted.
Jaylin got up, then used her hand to signal them to follow her. She walked on ahead. One officer shouted, "Miss Yuki, the others are gone!"
Jaylin stopped and signaled everyone to follow her again. This officer gasped, then got up and did what he was told. The officers had no other choice. They depended solely on Jaylin to keep them alive. Though, it never came easy.
Suddenly, they were all attacked by shadow insects that kept eating them. They all screamed and cried, many of them begged for Jaylin to help them, but she didn't. She couldn't. She bit her bottom lip and kept on moving as they all fought against the creatures to keep them away, while following her. Fear was gaining on all of them and hope was beginning to decrease.
Once Jaylin made it to the other side, she stood in front of the game maker.
"You seemed to have done a fine job. I congratulate you on your victory," the thief smirked.
"Maybe, but I'm not done yet and you know that too. I must wait on my team to make it here," Jaylin said.
"And, how do you expect to do that?"
"Because, once they make it, you will suffer a penalty game."
"What!?"
The last officer ran to the end of the maze and, just as he did that, darkness surrounded Jaylin and the thief gasped in fear.
"B-But... your powers! You can't..." The thief shouted.
"Control them? I've had some practice. PENALTY GAME!" Jaylin cried as her eyes turned fully gold and the thief screamed at the top of his lungs.
The darkness instantly vanished and the security officers began trying to catch their breaths. Kagemaru, meanwhile, was watching all of this from the security camera room. This was the first time seeing Jaylin use her powers. It was nothing he had ever seen before. It was quite shocking to say the least and something he was going to make his mission to look into.
Of course, Jaylin proved to also have a dark side to her as well. She sealed the souls of so many people into the Great Leviathan last summer. Kagemaru was one of those souls Jaylin sealed. He was able to get out of the monster, but he never forgot who sealed him in the first place. Instead of taking Jaylin to the authorities, Seto sent her to Duel Academy. There was one small problem.
Kagemaru knew about the problems in Duel Academy with Nightshroud, Tragoedia and Truman. He also knew about the Legendary Beasts that were buried under the school. He had accompanied Professor Banner, when they were investigating the forbidden dorm after the disappearance of several students and teachers. The trio that cursed the dormitory used their weaknesses to get them to work for him. For Professor Banner, it was his health and for Kagemaru, it was something else. He wasn't going to let Jaylin take it away from him. She, of all people, should not punish those, who were in the same position she was last summer.
Jaylin saw the helicopter and could only watch with furrowed eyebrows. Professor Banner's spirit was behind her, watching the helicopter land. Jaylin turned to Professor Banner, who smiled.
"Don't hold back," Professor Banner advised.
"Why go through all this trouble?" Jaylin asked.
"He knows I've lost."
"Then, looks like he'll lose too," Jaylin responded, showing a small smirk.
"I'll be with you, if you need me. He can't see me either."
Jaylin nodded as she made her way to her new enemy. She couldn't help, but think about what Professor Banner had told her yesterday.
Jaylin's friends had just discovered what Professor Banner was trying to warn them only a day or so ago. All the while, Jaylin couldn't stop thinking about the Shadow Game between her and Professor Banner. It was the reason that she had been distancing herself from her friends slightly. The fact she could go back to what she was last summer scared her. She wished it was as easy as avoiding everyone, but knew the consequences from her father's journal. Any of those choices was a double edge sword. It was difficult to decide which was the best solution.
"I once had a friend from America, who always said, 'a penny for your thoughts.' Do you have any idea what that means?" Professor Banner asked, his spirit looking over from the roof of Duel Academy, where Jaylin was sitting at.
"I believe, in English, it's an idiom for asking someone what they're thinking about," Jaylin replied as Professor Banner smiled halfly as the girl sighed. "You really wanna know what I'm thinking?"
"As your professor, yes."
Jaylin chuckled slightly, replying, "you're... kinda dead."
"So, I'm not your professor anymore?"
"N... that's not what I meant... or in the context of you're thinking."
"Then, what context do you mean by claiming I'm no longer your professor?"
Jaylin grew quiet for a moment, then replied, "you no longer have a reason to care for me."
Professor Banner chuckled, "you are wrong, Miss Yuki. If I had no reason, I wouldn't be here."
"But why me of all your... gah, who knows how many students you've taught in the past? I'm very sure you've been close to more than one student."
"True. I've had a number of students I grew close to."
"And I'm the special one among them all, why?"
"I never said you were. You were the only one that I was told to get rid of."
"Lovely," Jaylin muttered sarcastically, sighing.
"I suppose it is," Professor Banner said, looking out toward the clouds. "And, all the caring aside, you are also a child with powers beyond your control. Your heart is full of darkness, but also of heart. It bleeds when it's hurt and warms to those it cares about." He paused for a moment, looking out the window. "My heart is no different. It hurt when I saw how you looked at me, when I was in pain from the disease. I couldn't hurt someone, whose heart bled for my sake."
Jaylin looked up at Professor Banner with confused eyes, asking, "you changed, because you didn't like seeing me hurt?" Professor Banner nodded, while smiling. This gave Jaylin alot to think on.
