Anonymous Review: You did mention that last time and I didn't change it, then eventually forgot. I do apologize about that. I had been not reposting for about a few months, because was busy, back surgery, yada yada yada. I just continued this chapter where I left off and went from there. I'll keep that in mind next time. For the beasts, I was basing this duel after his duel with Jaden in the anime and I was a bit confused with the effects of the Mythical Beasts. If I missed one, I do apologize. We can assume that Kagemaru didn't know how to use the monsters effects and didn't care about winning or losing anyways. His aim was to weaken Jaylin before striking. As for the ending, it does kinda look like deus ex machina, but there was more going on, besides the duel that led up to that. Though, if you think about it for a moment, it makes sense. There are cameras all around Duel Academy, so you can't step onto the island without Kaiba knowing about it. If he sees an employee of his waltzing into Duel Academy and hurting his students, of course he's gonna do something about it. As for everything else like the God cards, that will be explained in the next chapter. As for Jaylin, you don't have to like her? I mentioned two chapters ago that she was more of an OC. Not to mention she doesn't have to be like Jaden just because she's supposed to be his female counterpart. To be honest, one of my nitpicks about genderbent fan fiction characters is the fact the female counterparts are too much like their original. I expect more creativity. You don't have to like Jaylin or the fact she's not Jaden Yuki, but I like her just the way she is. She's a major character with a backstory, flaws, talents, family, friends and personality. You can't come to me and tell me she's a bland character with no personality, depth or emotion that never learns or changes.
Here is the next chapter. This should explain the deus ex machina at the end of the last chapter. As I said, there was more going on, while the duel was commencing. Review please!
Jaylin moaned, slowly opening her eyes as she began making out her vision of Carl, Ronda, Zane and Seto. She then felt pain all over her body, but also the flowing sensation of darkness from Ronda, who had a hold of her hand. Jaylin turned her head and smiled at Ronda.
"You alright?" Ronda asked.
"A bit," Jaylin replied hoarsely. She then turned to Seto. "Thanks for the save, but how did you get here?"
"Besides catching Kagemaru through security cameras I placed all around the school? I knew what he was up to before he left the building. He stole my helicopter, so it took me longer to get there," Seto replied, looking rather annoyed.
"What happened?" Carl asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"Kagemaru had been after Jaylin for a while. He had been, since last summer. I suspected an attempt to murder her for quite some time, but I didn't have the proof. I suppose he was looking for the perfect time to strike. I had strict security around the building. Then, he managed to break into my office, steal the keys to my helicopter and take off with it. I'd rather not say how, but after that, I called security to order another helicopter to chase after him, and here I am," Seto replied plainly.
"Seems to add up, except the God Cards. I thought they were Yugi's," Zane said.
"They are and are used for Jaylin as a means of protection."
"Yugi uses the god cards to protect her?" Carl asked.
"And vice versa," Seto smirked as Jaylin sighed sadly.
"Something wrong?" Ronda asked Jaylin.
"I don't think anyone's going to forgive me," Jaylin replied quietly.
"Wait, you mean you really were the one that sealed everyone's souls?" Ronda asked awestruck as Jaylin guiltily nodded.
"It wasn't something you could hide forever. At some point, you're going to need to face what you did. You'd be a fool to think you can ignore or avoid it," Seto said plainly as Jaylin glared, then sighed quietly. "You figure out what to do next. You have a job to do."
Jaylin nodded with determination as Seto smiled. He left the room as Jaylin turned to her friends. Zane smiled, then Carl and Ronda.
"Thank you for saving us," Zane thanked as Jaylin smiled, then hugged her three friends.
"You guys are the best," Jaylin said in response.
There was no point in questioning Jaylin's moralities. At this point, Carl and Ronda had already accepted that Jaylin wasn't perfect and had made horrible mistakes. Though, they also accepted that she had been trying to redeem herself and become a better person. After the entire year they had been with her, it was clear as day that Jaylin had done all she could do as far as redeeming. She had a reason to hiding who she was and what she did last summer. It was time to move on, but that wasn't to say they'd trust Jaylin. They now knew what kind of person she really was. A kind person that will risk her life for others, but also can be selfish when it comes to her loved ones. That was something Jaylin would battle with for the rest of her life.
After Jaylin regained her strength, she returned to her class with a new substitute, now that Professor Banner was gone. She had been avoiding talking with anyone, not really wanting to face more hatred over a mistake she regretted. Though, it didn't seem like anyone was digging up old bones or anything. They seemed to be minding their own business. Though, Jaylin was still somewhat feeling uneasy.
"Hey!" Jaylin heard Crystal cry out, running to her with a gift basket in her hands that had a big Thank You sign over it. "Here. We noticed you were kinda down in the dumps, since that incident with that jerk, so we made you a gift basket."
"Thanks... I kinda was," Jaylin admitted, smiling a bit as she took the gift basket.
"Hey look, don't worry about what that guy says. He's just saying a bunch of hogwash. You saved our lives and more than once. That speaks louder than what that Kage guy has said about you, so do me a favor and stop with that mopy dopy stuff. It doesn't suit you," Crystal grinned as Jaylin laughed, then hugged her friend.
"I will. I'm sorry for worrying you guys," Jaylin apologized, parting from the hug.
"Don't worry about it. Enjoy the basket and come with us to the hot springs!"
"Alright. I'll do that for you guys," Jaylin promised, showing a bright smile as she followed Crystal.
Joining with the dance team at the hot springs, Jaylin began feeling a bit more eased and relaxed. Her entire dance team never believed what Kagemaru said about her or took it into consideration. Though, that didn't say the same for everyone else. They seemed incredibly untrusting about Jaylin, but it was something she decided she had to deal with. Maybe in time they'll forget and move on. There was no telling.
The next day, Jaylin met with Zane near the docks, fishing. It would soon be the end of the school year and Zane would graduate, and move to college. They decided to spend some of the days hanging out and fishing. Atticus also joined along.
"I never thought the day would come when I would willingly agree to go fishing," Zane said without emotion as Jaylin chuckled.
"I have a way of making people change their minds. It's a calm and relaxing hobby, after everything that's happened," Jaylin said with a small smile.
"What's going to happen about the Abandoned Dorm and Nightshroud?" Atticus asked.
"I'm going to continue protecting this school from him, Truman and Tragoedia. What else can I do?" Jaylin shrugged, watching her line.
"Or the rest of us?" Atticus asked with a bright smile.
"I'm going to be leaving, after this year, so I probably won't be much help," Zane sighed, then smirked. "Though, that's probably a good thing. I had enough of adventures for one school year."
"I'll probably come bother you some more," Jaylin smirked as Zane smirked, then snorted back.
"Perhaps. I'll just pretend I don't know you."
"Na, you'll miss me too much."
Zane gave a slight glare as Atticus laughed, "I'll make sure he remembers you when you become my girlfriend."
"Nice try," Jaylin smirked, giving Atticus raspberries.
"You wish she was your girlfriend, but we all know she's into off-the-wall boys with cute duel monsters."
"I can do that!" Atticus claimed.
"Except you already gave away your flirtation plan," Jaylin pointed out as Atticus pouted.
"Please! Just one date."
"Fine, you get one date."
"YES! Score!" Atticus shouted excitedly, pumping his arm before feeling his line pull. "I got myself a big one!" He began reeling in his fish.
"That wasn't even close to a good catch," Zane snorted, rolling his eyes.
Atticus glared at Zane, "Jaylin is more than a good catch, if she's the King's kid."
"I was talking about the fish," Zane said plainly, pointing to the fish Atticus caught in his hands.
"Oh," Atticus said before the fish jumped out of his hands and landed in the water. "NO!"
Zane and Jaylin laughed, both shouting, "EPIC FAIL!"
"You both are mean!" Atticus said with a fake pout.
"Whoever said I was nice?" Jaylin asked with a chuckle. "You sure you want that date?"
"Definitely!"
"If she's pretty, she's worth it," Zane said to Jaylin.
"I'm only worth it, because I use L'oreal," Jaylin replied as Zane and Atticus chuckled.
"Funny and beautiful. Yep, not regretting the date," Atticus replied as Zane and Jaylin laughed.
"I'm also supposed to choose someone to duel with for the graduation duel. Would you like to duel me one last time?" Zane asked as Jaylin smiled brightly.
"Definitely! If it's a duel you want, it's a duel you'll get!" Jaylin smirked as Zane nodded.
