Elizabeta hadn't known that signing up to be a foster mum would be so rewarding in a way. But sitting in the car seat next to her was a 4 year old Chinese boy who was clutching his small bag to his chest and whose long hair was neatly tied back. He was fixing her with a sceptical glance but Elizabeta didn't mind. She was happy to have someone to look after and teach what was right and wrong. Sure she was still young and people would probably view her as a teen mum but it would be worth it in the end. She wanted to play a part in the world. Fading into the background was not how Elizabeta lived. Helping Yao seemed to be the perfect way to play her part in the world.
The foster system had explained he had been abused by his step dad but when the man had been jailed for selling drugs and child abuse, the boy had nowhere to go. That was where Elizabeta came in. She had received a phone call asking if she could take in a child for a while to which she had readily accepted. Perhaps she'd even be allowed custody over the child. If anyone deserved a loving home then it was him.
"Um," A questioning sound grabbed her attention and threw it at the boy beside her. Elizabeta smiled an award winning smile (well it hadn't won any awards but you never know) at him. She was meant to be focusing on the road but she would be fine.
"What is it poppet?" She asked brightly. The boy's face scrunched up in confusion.
"Po…pet?" He pronounced slowly. "I do not…know."
Of course! The boy was Chinese. He had never left his house before and he probably knew only a bit of English, just the basics to help him understand normal conversations such as hello and goodbye.
"Uh sorry," Elizabeta said clearly, turning to face the road as the lights she had been stopped at turned green. "What's wrong?"
"Are…are you like Dad?" He said in clumsy English. "Will…you hurt me?"
If Elizabeta hadn't been strapped into a car driving down the freeway, she would have encased Yao in a giant hug and whispered promises into his ear. Instead she shook her head fiercely.
"No Yao. I will not be like your Dad." Any thoughts of the boy not understanding what she had said vanished as Yao smiled at her, the sceptical look gone like a slight breeze during summer.
Toris's mind was blank. What did he do? What could he do? What…how could he help Yao? Why was he so useless? Yao wasn't breathing. Yao wasn't moving. Was Yao dead? Was he alive? What did he do if he was dead? Why was this happening?
Why…
Was…
Everything…
Going…
Black…
"TORIS!" A voice yelled, shattering the illusion of darkness. "Snap out of it!"
Toris shook his head as if to get rid of the haze around his head and saw Vash standing in front of him. The short man's face was bright red and his eyes were close to ones you'd see on a mad man.
"Toris call an ambulance!" Vash was all but yelling. Toris hesitated, looking past Vash to see Roderich bent over Yao. Toris couldn't see exactly what was going on but he was sure Roderich was doing everything in his power to save Yao.
"Toris now!" A hand slapped against his cheek and Toris was shocked to see tears running down Vash's cheeks. Toris looked around the room suddenly to see all the beds bar the ones holding the sick kids were empty. He forced the thought of where'd they'd gone from his head and pulled his mobile from his pocket, his fingers slipping over the buttons as he tried to tap in the numbers too quickly. Vash had disappeared from in front of him and as Toris finally pressed the right buttons, he saw Vash was pulling the 5 other trundle beds away from Roderich and Yao.
Mei and Elizabeta were still asleep but Benjamin had woken up and now all the sick boys were crying though coughs occasionally racked their bodies.
"Hello?" A voice spoke into Toris's ear. "State what service you would like."
"Ambulance!" Toris cut it off before it could say anything else. "I need an ambulance. In fact I need enough for 6 people. And I need them now!"
"Connecting you," The voice said patiently and calmly. Whoever was speaking was probably used to people screaming and panicking.
"Hello," A woman's voice spoke briskly in. "Sate your emergency, location and number of ambulances."
"Oh God," Toris's mind was blank again but he quickly re-gained his thoughts as he heard the desperate sounds of the orphanage around him. "I'm at the local orphanage." He rattled the address of quickly. "I need enough ambulances for 6 people. An epidemic of…of something has broken out and one of the children isn't breathing!"
"We'll be there soon." Was all the woman said and the phone connection cut off. Toris stared at the phone, his breathe coming out in sharp pants. His legs felt weak and all he wanted to do was fall to the ground but seeing Vash working so hard to calm the children and Roderich caught up in a desperate battle with life and death convinced him to do otherwise. He could wait at the door for the paramedics. He could find the other children. He could do something that wasn't just collapsing.
"Go wait for the paramedics," Vash said softly, so softly that Toris almost missed it. "Belle is taking care of the others. We can't afford to think about them right now. It's cruel but we can't."
Toris just nodded and all but ran to the door at the other end of the large room. He suddenly couldn't bear to be in there with the crying kids and the dying Yao. It was too much. This was all happening too fast. All he'd wanted was to adopt a child and live a life with them. All he wanted to do was raise someone the right way unlike the way his parents had raised him. He hadn't wanted this. This was the second time ambulances had to be called in one day. And for children!
Toris's footsteps echoed in the hall as he headed towards the large door. The entrance hall had a cold air to it, one you'd find in a bathroom during winter. Now that the sounds of crying had been silenced, he could hear the rain hammering down. It was not a good night for driving. Toris was about to open the door when he heard quiet footsteps behind him that stopped very close to him. The Lithuanian spun to see two kids standing there. One was Keith. Tears trailed down his face and he was hugging a koala plushy. Something tugged at Toris's heart seeing this. It reminded him of Felicks who was always clutching Mr Pony. The toy had been left at Vash and Roderich's home when they had decided to drive round to the orphanage. Boy was Toris glad they'd decided to drive rather than wait until tomorrow. If not…well Toris didn't want to think about what would have happened if they hadn't.
The other child was Lucas, the stoic blonde boy whose brother was baby Emil. He held some sort of lumpy green toy. Toris wasn't sure what it was.
"What's wrong?" he asked the boys, suddenly reluctant to open the door. He didn't want them getting sick. They were after all, only dressed in thin pyjamas.
"I'm scared," Keith muttered as if embarrassed. "For Benny. I don't want him to die. He's my brother"
"And Tino," Lucas said sullenly. "He's my best friend."
Toris's throat closed up and he couldn't find any words to comfort the scared children. What could he say to reassure them that everything would be alright? You see he just didn't know if everything was going to be alright. Yao was dying. Elizabeta and the kids were in bad shape. The other children only had Belle to look after them. The ambulances were yet to arrive and Toris just couldn't see the light at the end of this tunnel.
And that's when the door slammed open, right into Toris's head.
The man fell forward, trying hard not to let loose a few choice swear words. What seemed to be a stampede of paramedics clumped through the door and stared down at Toris on the ground clutching his head. He was saved from saying anything when the bedroom door flew open and Vash yelled 'Over here!' The stampede of wild paramedics ran towards the beckoning Swiss and vanished through the door. Toris was left lying on the ground with two shell-shocked kids, trying to convince himself he hadn't seen Fretka amongst them.
Toris managed to get Keith and Lucas out the way by the time the first paramedics burst back out through the door. Toris swore he hadn't seen any stretchers when they had all so rudely entered the building but suddenly they had them. The two paramedics who had just entered the hall were pushing an unconscious Elizabeta towards the large entrance. An IV was clipped onto the side of the stretcher and the cord led into Elizabeta's arm. A green floral cloth rested on her forehead. It was one of the one's the 3 men had used as they'd tried so hard to keep everyone alive.
Had they failed though?
Was Yao dead?
The next person to be wheeled out into the rain was Benjamin. Keith cried out when he saw his brother and moved as if to run to him. Toris grabbed the boys arm gently and shook his head silently. Keith had to let the paramedics do their job. Benjamin was also hooked up to an IV and from what Toris could tell, he was awake. He had caught a glimpse of wide and wild distraught eyes.
One by one the other kids where wheeled out of the orphanage and into the waiting ambulances. Toris had peered out the door at one stage to see 4 ambulances there. 2 had driven off by now and the other was having the last child –Tino- loaded into it. Yao was yet to leave the room but now and again a paramedic had run past to collect equipment from the final ambulance. It seemed they were trying to stabilize Yao before they moved him to hospital with the others.
Lucas and Keith had long since fallen asleep against Toris, their breathing even and steady compared to what Toris had heard from the sick children. The Lithuanian decided it was best that the two go back to where ever the other kids were staying whilst the calamity going on in the large bedroom occurred. With a sigh, he shook them awake. Keith complained in a slightly slurred tone whilst Lucas remained silent, hugging his…thing to his chest and moving towards a side door without complaint. Toris had never seen the door before so he followed.
Upon opening it, Toris was surprised to find a rather large storage cupboard full of blankets and roll out mattresses. The stereotype of orphanages being run down and poorly stocked could not be applied to Elizabeta's proud work. This place was probably the safest place an orphaned child could be.
The kids had spread the mattresses and blankets out on the floor to create one huge mattress and they were all cuddled up on it. Some were asleep whilst others whispered to each other, too afraid of what might happen if they did doze off. Keith ran to join Alfred and Matthew, immediately snuggling up to the older boy and whispering in his ear. Lucas stumbled over to the cot and peered inside. Toris followed him and saw Emil asleep clutching a tiny toy, the type you'd find as a key ring. It was some sort of bird and Toris couldn't help but 'awww' at the sight. Lucas raised an eyebrow at this before settling down next to the cot and shoving his hand sleepily through the bars. Little Emil reached out even though he was asleep and took the hand.
Toris watched as Lucas's breathing evened out until it was obvious he was asleep. He set a blanket gently over him and then moved to sit next to Alfred who was hugging a sleeping Matthew.
"How did you know to set up beds in here?" Toris asked softly, trying to keep his voice quiet enough so that he wouldn't wake the slumbering kids.
"We've practised," Alfred blinked up at him. "Lizzy is always telling us to be prepared. We've practised fire drills, hiding if there's a murderer on the loose and even barricading the door. Doing this was one of the first things we ever did."
Toris wasn't sure how to respond now that his curiosity was satisfied so he ruffled Alfred's hair and then left, stepping carefully through the mess of children.
He pushed open the door and shut it quietly, wondering what he should do. Suddenly 3 paramedics ran through the door pushing a stretcher. Toris knew it was Yao but he couldn't even see the boy through all the weird wires and some large tank. Vash stumbled out after them, his face ashen grey. He could hear Roderich speaking politely but firmly with someone in the room.
"What's wrong Vash?" Toris asked, running to help the man to a seat.
"In there," Was all Vash said before slumping backwards on the seat and closing his eyes. Toris frowned, turning towards the door. Just then, Roderich walked out. His face was stone cold and it was obvious to Toris why because following him out was the most horrible slimy sick and disgusting man on earth.
Standing in the hall of the orphanage he'd threatened to burn down was Fretka.
I swear these cliff hangers just…happen. Sorry…
