After several hours of searching, Kid and Maka returned to their hotel.

Maka was in her room alone playing a game she'd gotten for her phone. "This is just silly. A cat with a poptart body running through space?" She smiled as she guided the cat through an obstacle course.

She crashed into something and got a game over. "No… I was doing so well too…" She sighed.

Maka looked at her door and wondered what Kid was doing all alone. Rather than getting up and checking, she decided to be lazy and call him on her new phone instead. "Great, looks like Soul's rubbed off on me…" She thought as she started the call.

Kid picked up his phone, which looked like the reaper face all over Death City. "Hello?" He said politely.

Maka smiled and blushed. "Uh.. hey Kid."

"Maka?" He said confused. "Aren't you just in the next room over? If you wanted to talk, all you had to do was knock and come over."

She sighed. "I know. I just didn't feel like getting up."

Kid smiled. "I see. It would seem Soul has rubbed off on you a bit."

She nodded. "Yeah, don't remind me…"

Kid sat down the book he'd been reading before the call. "Maka.. is something wrong?"

She shrugged. "I don't know, it's just… I keep thinking is all… I can't sleep."

He nodded. "Yes, well if you'd like, I could make you some tea to help you sleep."

Maka sat up from her bed blushing brightly. "What? No, you don't have to do that. I don't want to cause any trouble for you."

He smiled. "It's no trouble at all. I'll be there in just a minute. Make sure you're decent when I come in this time."

She got slightly annoyed by him saying that. "It's your fault for not checking before coming in…" The phone suddenly stopped receiving the call. "Huh, Kid?"

She tapped her phone screen and nothing happened. "Oh no…"

Kid knocked on the door and Maka sprung up and opened it. "Kid, it's terrible!"

Several minutes later her phone was plugged in and she was sitting across from Kid at the table in the room. "I didn't realize it had to be plugged in. I thought it would just keep working."

Kid sipped a bit of tea. "Yes, well, though those phones work well it does not mean that they don't require a charge. Those apps you use on it."

Maka tilted her head. "You mean the apples?"

Kid flinched. "Yes, those. You see, those take up a lot of power to run. So when you use them, you can drain the battery rather quickly."

She nodded. "Oh I see…" She stared into the cup of tea in front of her. She watched the steam rise and the ripples move.

"Hey Kid?..." She said quietly, still looking down.

Kid took a sip but acknowledged that she was going to ask him something.

She blushed, a bit but it didn't show due to her hair still being down. "Do you… like anyone?"

Kid put down his cup. "Not particularly, no. Why?"

Maka shrugged. "I just wanted to ask…"

Kid watched her carefully. "Maka, where is this coming from? You like someone don't you?"

She nodded. "But I haven't told anyone." She said looking at him.

He nodded. "It's Soul right?"

She looked at him directly now.

"It makes sense really. You two are weapon and meister. It's only natural that you two would grow feelings for one another." He said smiling.

She nodded. "What about you and Liz? Or you and Patty? You're partners too."

He nodded. "Yes, well, we have a different relationship. I don't quite think it would ever be a possibility to begin seeing each other with either of them."

She smiled. "So I do have a chance." She said energetically to herself.

Kid looked slightly confused at her. "Um… w-with Soul, of course!" She said blushing to cover up what she'd just said.

He looked her in the eyes. "Maka… is it me that you like?"

She blushed brighter. "Um.. no…"

He got an annoyed look on his face. "Maka, you looked away when you answered me. I can't get a clear answer from you unless you look me in the eye and tell me."

She looked at him. "Uh…" She stared into his eyes as if hypnotized by them. "Yes…"

He nodded. "Very well then." He too another sip of his tea. "I'm sorry."

She looked concerned. "Sorry? For what?"

He sighed. "I don't particularly think you and I should go out."

Maka tensed up. "Why?"

He looked at her. "I don't want to hurt Soul. It wouldn't be right of me to do so."

She got an annoyed look on her face. "Well, he had his chance. He had plenty of chances. But he never took them. So I thought-"

Kid stopped her. "Maka, that's enough… I'm sorry. But he's a friend, so I couldn't do it." He stood up and started for the door. "I'll come get you in the morning… we'll begin looking for that tainted soul again tomorrow."

Maka threw her pillow at the door after it closed with tears forming. "Don't bother, Kid…" She fell back onto her bed and wiped off the tears.

Kid went into his room and closed the door placing his hand over his chest. "Maka…"

He walked over to the table in his room and sad down.

Maka moved her arm off of her eyes and stared at the ceiling. "Wait a minute…" She thought and sat up. "What did Kid say?..."

"I don't want to hurt Soul. It wouldn't be right of me to do so."

She looked out the window in her room and then to the door. "Does he feel the same but can't act on it?" She said with a hopeful tone to her voice.

Maka smiled and her eyes sparkled. She went and picked up her pillow and brought it back to her bed.

She jumped onto her bed and hugged the pillow. "Kid…" She closed her eyes to go to sleep.

{[( I'm sorry this took so long, but computers hate me. I'm working on the next chapter already, so hopefully you like this and the next one. Please review and give some suggestions for something to happen in a soon-to-be chapter and I may do it. The tainted soul I've already decided on who it is, and I'm excited to have you guys find out.)]}
