The thing the Doctor loved best about humans was their sense of wonder. The bright astonishment in their eyes when beholding something strange and new. He watched the little Lady of Camelot's eyes grow wide, a smiling gasp pass from her, her hand reaching out for the stars outside the TARDIS door.

"Where are we?" she asked.

"We are high, high above the clouds– above the sky. Look down," he put a hand on her shoulder, subconsciously assuring her that she needn't be afraid to fall. "That, waay down there, that's the Earth. That's the whole world."

"But– it's round!" she gaped. "Oh, it's lovely from way up here."

"It's lovely from down there, too," he defended.

"Magic can do all this?" she asked, "Take us all the way up here? How can it be evil, if it can do so much good?"

"Well," this wasn't exactly magic, but he would deal with her second question first. "Is a sword evil?"

She frowned in concentration. "No."

"But swords hurt people. Does that make them evil?"

He regretted using this particular example, it seemed to have an effect on her. But she blinked away the tears and shook her head. "No. Just the people who hurt people with them."

"Magic is the same way," he said.

"What's your name?" she asked.

"The Doctor."

"You can stop playing games with me, I know that's not your name," she replied.

"Sure it is," the Doctor said. "It's the name I've chosen. That makes it mine."

"Then what's your given name?" she reworded her question.

He shook his head. "Can't tell you that."

"Why?"

"It's a secret."

"Are you on the run?" she asked.

He sighed. "Yes."

"Oh," she accepted. "That's alright then, you don't have to tell me."

"What's your name, then?" he asked. He should have asked before. Rude and not ginger, again.

She giggled. "Well, I'm on the run now too, aren't I? I can't tell you."

"Oh, that's not fair," he laughed. "I have to call you something."

She thought for a moment. "Raven. Call me that."

"I thought you were afraid of ravens."

"Not when I'm awake," she reminded him.

No, don't do that, he told himself, but he was too late. His eyes were locked onto the Crystal, there was no turning back.

He was a girl walking through a castle. She had was wearing trousers, which was odd, but she wasn't the only one, so it must have been the norm in her land. She was walking through as castle with racks of clothes, similar to hers. The queen there must have a fetish. She brushed her golden hair aside as the made her way deeper, down into the dungeons, Merlin assumed. She kept calling out for someone– he couldn't hear her. As she entered a chamber, turning on candles above with the flick of a switch– that is a brilliant invention, he wondered how it worked– he realized she was being followed.

The statues were following her. Well, they must be statues, but they weren't made of stone. And they wore real clothes. What an odd land she must come from. But that was not thing thing he needed to ponder, it looked like those statues had malicious intent.

The girl turned around, seeing the statues. She didn't seem to think much of them, seemed to think it was a trick. The closer they got, the less she looked like she believed that, though. She was yelling at them, but they closed in on her.

Get out, Merlin thought, but he could do nothing.

One of the statues raised its arm to strike her, and she winced, closing her eyes. Get out!

Suddenly someone grabbed her hand. She looked up, and Merlin saw the face too.

Run, the Doctor said silently, as he dragged her out of harm's way.

He saved her, Merlin thought, relieved. A vision that he didn't need to change; the Doctor saved her, all was well, that was that. Wasn't it? It kept going.

Faster and faster now. He saw the girl swing down on a chain to save the Doctor. He saw them watching the sun from– where was that? A balcony? He saw them run through the snow– she was wearing a dress now. He saw them dancing in the TARDIS He saw them save each other, he saw them laugh and smile. Faster and faster the images were coming.

No, now they were slowing down. The Doctor pointed the sonic screwdriver at the TARDIS, sending it away, the girl still inside. What are you doing? Merlin wondered. Then he saw the Doctor's face– he had given up. He was going to die and had saved her, one last time. No, I don't want that, I don't want to watch him die.

But the girl was fighting it, fighting the TARDIS, she didn't want to go. She was pounding at the door. She had opened a grate in the floor, looking into the light pouring out of it– that didn't look good. Merlin's gut clenched. That did not look good.

Her eyes glowed bright like the sun, light spilling out of the TARDIS. The Doctor was surrounded by– who knew what those were– but she turned them to dust. That was magic, it must have been, pure magic poured into her.

But she was sweating, it was hurting her, she couldn't handle it. Help me, he read her lips say.

And the Doctor pulled her into a gentle kiss, the light in her eyes going into his. He was taking the magic from her, saving her again.

But now he was dying.

No, Merlin felt helpless. Now they were in the TARDIS, the Doctor had a sad smile, he was telling her goodbye, he must be. He threw his head back and his arms out and burst into flame–

Merlin shoved the Crystal into his bag. No. He would not watch the Doctor die.

But he just had.

He furiously rubbed the tears from his eyes and left the treasury, nearly forgetting to lock the door again on his way out. Yes, he was furious, furious with himself, and with the Crystal, and with magic, and with this girl, this girl who killed the Doctor…

But that wasn't right. She saved the Doctor. She just didn't know he would have to save her, too.

"I think I want to go home now" was the Doctor's least favorite sentence. But little Raven had said so, and he would take her home.

Her nurse had come to check on her again after hearing the TARDIS noise. "What's that sound?"

"Just the chair scraping against the floor– sorry, I was putting it back," the girl replied.

"Really, you must go to sleep," her nurse tucked her into bed, gave her a kiss on the forehead, and left.

As soon as she was gone, the girl was up again. She ran to the curtain, ripping it aside with a smile on her face–

And the TARDIS was gone.
