A/N: I do not nor will I ever own anything by Falling Skies, TNT, or Steven Spielberg. I will try to keep most of the characters and important events the same but most of these chapters will be original.
Also as a warning. I realize the grammar is poor at best, so if you can read it and enjoy it then that's all I am asking.
Epilogue
10 years later
Feeling the warm glare of morning sun dancing on her face, Maggie felt herself stirring out of her sleep. Opening her eyes, she could see her husband coming out from the bathroom with a smile on his face.
"What are you doing out of bed?" She asked groggily before laying her head back down on the pillow.
"I had to take a piss,"he said climbing back into the bed and snuggling close to her again.
Pulling the cover over their bodies once more, Margret closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep. It was then she felt his fingers gently caressing her right arm causing her to shiver slightly. Turning over she could see him staring down at her with a that trademark smirk on his face.
"Can I help you Mason?"
Giving her a wink, Hal leaned in and kissed her softly. "Yes I believe you can Mrs. Mason."
Pulling away from his kiss, Maggie still couldn't believe they had been married for 10 years already. She could still remember that day when she was first meet him. How she quickly disarmed him and threaten to kill him if he ever tried to attack her again. Grinning to herself, she could see Hal staring down at her with an amused look on his face.
"What's got you smiling?"
"Just remembering some fond memories we had together."
Chuckling, Hal moved some of her long blonde hair out of her face. "Let me guess...the time we first met."
"How did you know that?" She asked giving him a curious look.
Smiling back at her, Hal leaned in close again. "Because my love, I know you."
Shaking her head at him, he suddenly pulled the cover off there bodies and jumped on her, causing her to yelp out in surprise.
"What on are Earth are you doing?"
"Well considering that we have some time before 2nd Mass Reunion party, I thought we could have some fun."
"I wonder what you have in mind,"she said with a huge grin while noticing that his eyes were leering over her purple bra and matching panties.
"Hey mom and dad, I was wondering if me and Michael could go outside and play with the neighbors?" Asked their 10 year old daughter Rebecca, who suddenly went quite when they both turned to look at her.
"Rebecca Bethany Mason! Don't you ever knock!" She shouted at her daughter.
"I am sorry, I am sorry!" She yelled back closing the door to their bedroom and running down the stairs once more.
Sighing heavily, Maggie could see the disappointed look on her husband's face. "I thought we learned this lesson when your father and Anne walked in on us years ago."
"Apparently not,"he added with a grin,"but I guess it's time we get ready anyways."
"Not yet,"she said pulling him into a passionate kiss.
She could feel him eagerly responding back to her kiss for a while before finally pulling away. "I will get the kids ready so you can take your shower first. We still got another 20 more minutes before the hot water shuts off."
Nodding back at her, Maggie watched Hal hop off her body and head into their walk in closet. Putting on a plain white t-shirt and pair of blue Mario sleep pants he calmly walked out of their bedroom. Pulling herself out of bed, she made her way into closet to find some clean clothes. Finding a fresh pair of underwear, blue jeans, white tank top, and long sleeve red sweeter, she entered the bathroom and turned on the shower. Once the water finally reached the right temperature, she took off her underwear and entered the shower. With the warm water hitting her body, she allowed her mind to wonder at how much things had changed.
While killing the Overlord and his super weapon was a undeniable blow to there war effort, it still took another 2 years before the Overlords finally gave up and left there planet for good. Unfortunately along the way the 2nd Mass suffered even more causalities including Anthony, Christine, and Colonel Porter. What was even more troubling was the fact that out of the original 300 2nd Mass survivors who left the Boston area, only 50 of them would ever see the end of the war.
Grabbing the shampoo and conditioner combination, she gently started lathering inside her wet blonde hair. Once that was done, Maggie backed up into the spray of the shower head and started rinsing the product out of her hair.
But despite the end to the war, it wasn't the end to there hardships. The Overlords left behind all the Skitters they had brought along, not to mention hundreds of Mechs and crawlies. The rebel Skitters who were friendly with them tried there best to get the brethren (who were still fallowing the last commands of there masters) to join them, but the majority of them still couldn't resist the affects of the harness. It took the rebels over a hundred years to counter the affects of the harnessed influencing power. Combine that with groups of raiding humans who now had no aliens to keep them in check, it still made for a difficult life to live in.
Turning off the shower, Margret slowly stepped out of the tub and grabbed her towel off the rack. Drying off her body and then hair, she grabbed her clothes and began to put them on. Running her brush through her hair, her thoughts were turned to the harnessed kids.
Even with the skitters help there still was no way of reversing the affects the harness did to there children. The transformation from human to something that looked like a monster from a horror film took about 3 years with a harness. Without one, the affects were much slower. But none the less the end result would still the the same, although deharness kids still retained all of there mental capacity. Unfortunately there was no right way to deal with this problem. As some humans felt there was no distinction between deharnessed and harness kids and the only way to stop them was to put them down.
"God your beautiful,"said Hal pulling her out of her own train of thought.
Walking into the bathroom, he hugged her from behind and placed his head on her shoulder. "Well your not bad looking either sweetheart."
Smiling into the mirror, Maggie felt his hands beginning to pull away from her when she wrapped her arms around his hands forcing him to stay put.
"Are you okay sweetheart?"
Looking down at the sink and then back into the mirror she nodded her head. "Hal...I am pregnant."
The shock on his face was priceless, as he immediately turned her around and embraced her. "Wow! I mean just wow!"
"I know, I only found out yesterday when I visited the hospital in Columbia. Lourdes gave me the news herself."
"This is wonderful news Mags!" He said hugging her again.
Pulling away from his embrace, she rested her forehead against his while grinning back at each other.
"I will tell Becca and Mike. You need to get a shower before our hot water turns off."
Giving him one last kiss, Maggie slowly pulled away from his grasp and left the bathroom. Shutting the door, she stared down the narrow hallway that led to their kids room and a spare bathroom.
Their two story house was located in Georgetown city, which was only about a 15 minute drive away from the new capital of the New United States, Charleston. There the president and his council ruled over a population close to 7,000 along with the entire state of South Caroline while having holdings in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Heading down the stairs, Maggie spotted her two children eating some whole grain cereal that was made right here in Georgetown by agricultural division of the New Untied States government. Although things like power and hot water were rationed off so that they could keep up with the ever increasing demands of a growing population. But compared to the way they were living during the war, Margret would take having to deal with timed limited hot water and electricity.
"So how are my children feeling this morning?" She asked them, walking past the dinning room table and went into the kitchen to grab some coffee that Hal made but stopped at the last moment.
"Good,"said her 6 year old son Michael Thomas Mason, who looked like a miniature Hal expect for his bright blue eyes.
Looking at her 10 year old daughter, (who had her long blond hair but with Hal's eyes) she immediately turned away with an embarrassed look on her face.
Shaking her head, Maggie opened the fridge finding some unsweetened tea and poured herself a glass instead.
"What's a matter sis?"
"Nothing Mike, nothing at all,"she said giving him a sheepish look.
Grabbing a slice of toast Hal had made for her, she bit into the slightly burnt piece of bread. Taking a sip of her tea, Margret stared at her children with a long gaze. She never thought in a million years her life could turn out like the way it did. Having a happy family, loving husband, and a community safe enough to live in was all she could have dreamed for.
"Mom... are you okay?" Asked her daughter who had noticed she was staring at them.
Smiling back at her, she nodded her head. "Yes Becca I am okay. It's just that I've got some wonderful news kids."
"What is it mommy?" Asked her son, who put down his spoon and gave her his full attention.
Taking a deep breath, Maggie felt herself relax enough to tell them. "Mommy's pregnant."
"What?" Shouted her daughter with a surprise look on her face.
Nodding her head, she could see the same surprised look on her son. "Yep. I only found out yesterday."
"Does dad know?"
"Of course darling,"she said with a smile on her face,"I told him a few minutes before I told you."
It was then her son Michael stood up and cheered. "Yes! I won't be the baby of the family anymore!"
"Ha...your still a baby,"teased Rebecca with a grin.
"Not-huh."
"Uh-huh."
Listening to her kids bickering back and forth, Maggie could only smile in response. It was then Hal came down the stairs with an amused look on his face. Giving her a questioning look at why there kids were fighting, she simply shrugged her shoulders before turning away from him.
"Alright, alright...enough kids. That also means you too Rebecca."
"But dad!"
"No butts Bethany. Now you two go and grab your jackets."
Sighing, Rebecca stood up and made her way towards the down stairs closet. "Hey wait up sis!" Called out her little brother running after her.
"What was that all about?" He asked handing her gun 1911 pistols and side gun hostlers.
"You know...kids being kids."
Shaking his head, Hal snapped on his own gun belt around his waist that had his twin Smith and Wesson 9mm pistols on it.
"Here Dad, I got you your special jacket,"said there son carrying his 2nd Mass brown military jacket to him.
"Thank you son."
"And don't worry mom I didn't forget about you,"added her daughter carrying her own 2nd Mass brown military jacket for her.
Taking the jacket from her, Maggie put it on and quickly put her side holsters over her jacket. Grabbing the car keys from the bowl on the counter, she tossed them to her husband.
"You drive my dear. I still kinda sleepy."
Giving her an amused look, Hal turned the lights off in the kitchen. "Whatever you say my love."
Driving down the mostly repair road, Hal looked into his rear view mirror to make sure that his kids hadn't unbuckled themselves. With Michael fast asleep and his daughter staring out the window, he turned his attention back on the highway once more.
"Our exit,"replied his wife pointing towards turn coming up.
"Trust me sweetheart I know. Remember we take this route 5 days a week to work,"he said with a teasing grin on his face.
Rolling her eyes, Maggie ignored his comment. "I was playing I spy with Becca thank you."
"Well excuse me Margret."
"You're not excused Hal."
Chucking, Hal took the exit and entering the capital of the New Untied States of America, Charleston. The city itself had been rebuilt very quickly in these past 8 years since the war ended. While certain buildings were beyond repair, what they could salvage was repurposed and put back into use. The Skitters turned out to be great workers and good engineers as their helped turned what would take years into only months.
Taking a left, they had to wait for the crossing guard to allow them to pass by groups of people who had just started crossing the street. Giving them the go they drove past the restored firehouse and went along the coast passing by several bikes and cars of people who were on the go. Off in the distance he could see the old airport turned scout training camp he was in charge of, Camp Porter. Being commander of the camp meant he was responsible for every scout that graduate from the military facility. Personally he oversaw every person who graduated in the past 3 years and joined the scout division of the army.
Going right, Hal purposely drove past the university where Maggie taught survival training to kids from 8 to 16. While she could have gotten any position in the army and special forces she wanted, Maggie like Hal was tired of fighting on the front lines. Before she got cancer and even when she was in jail, Margret always teach. So when she got her first chance to help teach kids things they would need to know in order to survive the world they lived in now, she jumped at it.
"Well look who we are behind,"said Maggie pointing an army green and brown SUV that had 1st New United States flag flying high on the side.
Looking at the vehicle and it's license plate, Hal chuckled to himself. The car belonged to Dai, Priya Dilawri and there 6 year old son Chan Dilawri. After the war, Dai accepted a position into the army and was given the rank of colonel. Being stationed in Columbia he helped secure the rest of the South Carolina against aliens, humans, and other threats facing the new nation.
Priya was finally given a chance to use her engineer training and skills for good by being placed in charge of restoration and housing development for the nation. Being station in Columbia along side her husband, she oversaw the development of almost every house for the last 5 years.
"Should I do it?" He asked his family, putting his hand over the horn of the steer wheel.
"Do it dad!" Yelled Rebecca back in excitement causing her little brother Michael to suddenly wake up.
Being forced to stop at a check point to enter the government and military district of the city, Hal honked the horn at them. Immediately Dai poked his head out the window and was about to start yelling at him when he stuck his head out the window with a wide grin on his face.
"Son of a bitch! I should have known it was you commander Mason!"
"Ha, and come on colonel Dai...it's just Hal to my friends!"
Shaking his head back at him, Hal spotted Priya stick her head out the window on the passenger side. "Hey Maggie...I thought you told me you were going to beat us here!"
"Yeah well I got a good excuse this time. Believe me you'll understand when I tell you!" She shouted back to her best friend.
Sticking both their heads back into the hummer, the married couple exchanged an happy expression before driving forward to the check point. After the MP allowed them to enter the district, Hal fallowed Dai and Priya's SUV around the bend until they reached the 2nd Mass old camp at the Amtrak station. Their former camp was now being used a listening post with several radio towers and transforms sent up in order to keep contact with everyone spread out along the state.
Pulling up next to his SUV, the Mason's all started filing out of the hummer. After exchange some friendly greetings the Dilawri's, they were about to head inside when he spotted Tector and Lourdes coming out a rebuilt minivan.
"Now that took me by surprise,"whispered Dai into his ear while the new couple made their way over to them.
With Tector's previous enlistment in the marines, he was given command of first sniper unit in the NUSA. (First Recon as they were called), proved to be a key part of the military and was most useful against Mech's and Skitters. Fighting behind enemy territory Tector reached the rank of Major before he was finally pulled off the front lines due to injury.
Lourdes spent 4 years after the war traveling around different units as chief Medic. Finally after the hospital Columbia was completed, Doctor Glass offered a position to become chief Medical resident, which she gladly took. It was there Tector was recovering from his injuries and where the two reconnected from their shared experience with the 2nd Mass. Shortly there after the two started dating.
"Okay go and ahead get out of your systems,"added Tector with an annoyed look on his face.
"What on Earth could you mean?" Asked Priya with a smirk.
Walking past her boyfriend, Lourdes embraced Hal. "It's good to see you again Hal."
"Likewise Lourdes."
"Two days in a row Maggie...one would think this more than chance."
"It's nice to see you again too my friend,"added his wife who exchanged a brief hug with Lourdes and Tector.
Looking down at his kids, he could Mike and Chan talking in an excited manner while his daughter Becca was standing close to Maggie. Who ever said daughters were daddy girls never met his little girl. Besides being mother and daughter, the two had a special connection for she would tell her things that she wouldn't even tell him. Hal use to get upset by this, but then he understood it wasn't about him. Instead it was about the fact that his daughter admired the way her mother carried herself. That strength and passion combined with a strong self of confidence, was something he himself loved about his wife. So it was only naturally there daughter would look up to her as well.
After saying hi to several other former 2nd Mass brethren, the three family's finally made their way inside the Amtrak station. Passing by a group of kids, Hal and the rest of their group entered the old mess hall they used during their stay here.
"Attention...officer on deck!" Shouted one of the MP's who was station at the camp's entrance.
Raising his hand to salute him, Hal and the rest of party turned to the front double doors just when general Weaver and his daughter came strolling into the mess hall.
"At ease my friends,"said their old leader with a smile on his face,"I may only have one eye, but I haven't forgotten this is a party and not a military ball."
Laughing, everyone slowly lowered their hands and made there way over to greet their former captain. After the war captain Weaver was unanimously picked to become the new general in charge of the entire military of the New United States army. Despite being in his late 50's Dan took to his new role with the same attitude that gave hope to the 2nd Mass during the worst parts of the war.
His daughter Jeanie spent 2 years in the scout divisions and even earned a commission as an 2nd lieutenant. After serving with distinction, she resign from the scouts and became a teacher at the university where Maggie taught. Teaching math and science to the hundreds of children who enrolled in the school kept her very busy but his wife would attest was extremely rewarding.
Waiting their turn to meet with general Weaver, Hal and Maggie finally approached their former captain.
"Ah Hal and Maggie Mason. Still the two best scouts this country has ever seen,"he said offering them a hug each.
"Thanks captain, sorry I mean general. Old habits die hard you know,"he said with a smile.
Giving him an amused look, Dan smiled back. "No need to apologize commander Mason. This is a reunion party so technically I should be called captain...although I must admit the general title sounds better."
"Oh Dad I swear sometimes."
"What?"
"Nothing papa bear. Maggie as always its nice to see you again,"she said hugging her fellow teacher.
"Indeed Jeanie."
"Come on Dad... lets find a seat before all the good ones are taken."
Right when Hal and Maggie were about to go and sit down again he spotted the messy hair of his little brother Matt coming through the doors.
Matthew was still too young to do any serious fighting during the war with the overlords. But that didn't stop him from contributing anyway he could, even if that meant bringing ammo and food to front line soldiers. When Matt was 16 he enrolled into the agricultural division of the government. After spending several years of learning under master farmer, he was finally given his chance to lead a team of farmers in and around Greenville.
"You seriously need to do something about your hair little brother,"said Hal with a grin on his face.
"Shut up Hal. Before you met Maggie you had no room to talk."
Chuckling, he turned around to see his wife laughing at him. "Kids come over here and say hi to uncle Matt."
Kneeling down, Matthew gave his daughter and son a big hug before standing back up. "Boy, every time I see you guys seem to be growing. What is your father feeding you?"
"Come on uncle Matt. Were kids, were suppose to be growing,"added his daughter with a smirk on her face.
Sighing heavily, he crossed his arms and gave her an amused look. "Touche Rebecca. But don't worry I will get you the next time I am back in Charleston."
Laughing, Hal leaned in close so that only his brother could hear him. "Did you know if Ben is going to make it?"
"I am afraid not. The last time I talked to him he said it was only a slim chance he might be able to make it."
Pulling back from him, Hal nodded his head and gave his brother a somber look. Returning his look, the two Mason brothers started talking about their jobs when the two MP's raised their weapons and hands.
"Attention President Mason and chief Doctor Glass entering the hall!"
Once again everyone turned their attention towards the double doors as his father and his long time girlfriend came strolling through the doors holding hands.
After the war Annie served time on the high council as the civilian advocate. But once the hospital was completed in Columbia, she got the itch to get back out their and help people. Being in charge of the first hospital of the new nation gave her the opportunity to truly help people again.
Tom at first declined to take any political position after the war, but when the populace voted him president of the country he couldn't refuse anymore. Now serving in the final year of his second term, Hal's father was looking forward to possible being elected again for a third term. With his importance to the NUSA, rebel Skitters, and deharnessed kids there was no reason why he wouldn't be reelected yet again.
"Please everyone...relax. Today I am just the 2nd Mass's XO that's all."
Smiling, Hal walked over and embraced his father. "It's so good to see you son."
"You too dad."
"Anne...it's always a pleasure to see you."
Hugging him, Doctor Glass pulled back with a smile. "Thanks Hal."
"How are you doing Maggie?" Asked his father to his wife.
"Good Tom, You?"
"I can't complain you know."
Pulling away from Tom, Maggie embraced Anne deeply as the two finally pulled away. "Congratulations by the way."
"Thanks Annie. Were happy too,"she said with a wide grin.
President Mason was about to ask what they were talking when suddenly he was attacked by his two kids.
"Grandpa!" They both said at the same time.
Backing up, Tom managed to catch himself before falling over. "Easy kids, easy. I am not your father, my old back can't take too much of this."
"Don't worry grandma Glass can patch you up,"added Mike, causing everyone to laugh.
Finally letting him go, Rebecca and Michael made their way over to Anne and gave her a hug a piece. "Well now that everyone is here...why don't we get this little get together on the road!" Yelled Tom, causing everyone to start cheering.
Giving the pair of double doors one last look for Ben, Hal made his way back to his seat with his wife and two kids. After spending some time talking about old times and memories the cooks who served this listening post brought up plates of food and set them down on each table. Once the cooks left, general Weaver stood up and removed his trademark hat.
"Before we eat, I ask that we all bow our head and remember those good people who never got a chance to see this day."
Bowing his head, Hal said a silent prayer for all the friends his lost. "Okay now does anyone have anything they wish to share?"
Looking down at his wife, Hal could see her smiling back at her. "I do sir."
"By all means Hal, you have the floor,"he said sitting back down.
"I hope you didn't start eating without me!" Shouted Ben who cam strolling through the side doors.
Immediately everyone turned to look at 25 year old Benjamin Mason. Unfortunately for Ben the time after the war wasn't any easier than it was during it. People often treated with prejudice because of his spikes and his dealings with the Skitters. Not to mention at the fact that his transformation into what people called Harness Monster's was slowly spreading. The brown crusted skin now had reached the back of his neck, chest, and forearms making it impossible for him to hide. But instead of running away from his disfigurement, he embraced it and tried to help his kind by being the deharnessed kids ambassador. Technically being on the high council, he often spent most of his time between the Skitters and deharnessed camps trying to broker fair deals for both groups.
Without warning Tom, Matt and himself all stood up and ran over to hug their brother and son. "I didn't think you would make it,"replied his father in a shaky voice.
"Don't worry dad...I wouldn't miss this for the world."
Wiping away the tears, Tom nodded his head. "Come here little brother."
Pulling Ben into a tight embrace, the two brothers patted each other on the back. "What took you so long?"
"I got caught up in traffic,"he said, making the both of them chuckle lightly.
After Matthew and Ben exchanged pleasantries, the four Mason men made their way back to the table. Once seated, general Weaver turned to look at him. "I believe you had something you wanted to say Hal."
Forgetting for a moment, Hal stood back up again. "Me and Maggie are going to have another child."
All around him people were congratulating him and Maggie on their 3rd child together. After telling a dozen or so people thank you he finally sat down and let Weaver finish.
"Okay...now that is done, lets dig in!"
Grabbing plates of food for his son and himself, Hal and the rest of his family began eating the good food that was all around them. Nearing the end of his meal, he was content to lean back and watch the scene of happy people enjoying a chance to have fun with old friends for a change.
Reaching under the table, he took his wives right hand in his left. "Maggie do you know how much I love you?"
"I have an idea,"she added with a grin,"but why don't you remind me?"
"I love you so much that I will fight an alien invasion for you."
Chuckling, she gripped his hand even tighter. "Well it's a good thing that's never happened before?"
Smiling, Hal took his other hand and placed it on her cheek. "Maggie I don't know what my life would be like without you."
"Well my love, hopefully you won't have to get to find out for a long time."
"I can live with that."
"Me too."
Kissing his wife softly on the lips, Hal turned to look at his family and friends once more. After everything he and 2nd Mass had been through, this moment was perfect to him. This was what they had sacrificed so much for and this was something they would continue to fight for. For Hal and Maggie the future never seem brighter. Sure there was still problems and world wasn't what you would call safe, but at least they now had chance to achieve something greater than what they started with. And in the end that was all they ever wanted from life and themselves.
The End!
