A/N I have a nice surprise in this chapter for y'all. At least I think it's nice. And I sure had fun writing it. Well I won't keep you all at the edge of your chairs anymore. Enjoy reading this chapter. And as always, please R+R. Pretty, pretty please. ( No I'm not ashamed begging for them, I'm a review junkie remember.)
Chapter 34
It has been 5 hours since Alex and Casey were in Olivia's room. Thanks to Angie, Casey can stay in Olivia's room too. As long as her presence isn't stressful or is disturbing Olivia the redhead can stay. Casey only has left the room to get Alex and herself something to drink and once something to eat. Not that the blonde attorney has touched the food Casey brought for her. Alex has held her wife's hand since the moment she got into the room. Olivia is hooked up to several machines to keep checking her vitals. Prof. Taymar and Angie are taking turns to look at Olivia. But unlike earlier surgeries and the attempts to sedate her, Olivia doesn't wake up. In fact it's the opposite. Alex kept talking to Olivia about 20 minutes at a time. She hasn't react at all. And obviously Alex is worried about the brunette Detective. A short knock on the door gets both ADA's attention and they look up to see who is coming inside. Angie walks inside and sees the anxiety and worries on their faces. She closes the door behind her and walks to the bed.
"Why doesn't she wakes up? Why isn't she reacting?" Alex softly asks Angie, who's checking Olivia's vitals.
"Alex, Detective Benson's vitals are alright. There good actually. But her body is taking the rest it needs. Needed for quite some time, but she wouldn't allow it. Now that we are not in NY anymore she allows herself, somehow, to relax and let her body heal and rest. The test we did are not showing any rarity or activity it shouldn't show. She is asleep, and with all the sedatives we have given her the past days, the narcotics she had for the surgeries, she is sleeping deeper then she normally does. I promise you that she will wake up, but we need, you need, to give her time. I'm sure that she will be her usually stubborn self and driving us crazy, soon enough. And sooner then, us Dr's and Prof's, will like." Angie softly smiles.
"So Liv not waking up is actually a good thing, for now?" Alex asks.
"Considering how your tough Detective is, yes, for now it is. I know you are worried and scared, Alex. And that's alright, it's normal. Just keep in mind that we are monitoring and checking Detective Benson very carefully. She's safe here, Alex. And she's in the best facility possible. So let me ask you this. Is there anything we or I can do to assure you, beside the things we are doing already?" Angie asks.
"I trust you when you say that she's doing alright, given the circumstances. So nothing you can do for me in that area. They probably think I'm crazy or that I'm over reacting, but I don't freaking care. I would like it if there would be staying someone outside Liv's room. Just in case. I want Liv to be safe, and the three of us safe. I want to feel safe too without Liv being awake. I don't care if we have to hire a firm to do it or not. Should that be necessary. That's what you could do for me. Well, for us to be exact." Alex answers.
"Hey Benson, you're not crazy. And as far as I concern you're not over reacting either. I don't have to repeat what you and Liv have been going trough, we all know that. It's perfectly normal wanting to be safe or to feel safe. I'm sure Angie agrees with me on this. Don't you, Angie?" Casey says.
"Yes I do. Casey is right, Alex. And I'm sure I will be able to arrange that for you. They will understand it without needing or getting details. Now if I can do anything else for you, just let me know." Angie answers.
"No that's it for now. Thank you, Angie." Alex says.
"Alright. Now I need you to do something for me. Casey, the rest of the team and me to be specific. I need you to eat those sandwiches Casey bought for you. I know you're not hungry but eat them. If you don't take care of yourself, your wife is going to be on a war path with all of us, except for you maybe, if she finds out. I have no doubts that, somehow, she will. And as soon as she thinks she will be able to, she's gonna kick our ass' for not taking care of you. I think I pass for that." Angie says.
"Me too. So start eating, Counselor. I will even go and buy some new ones or other ones if you want that." Casey chips in.
"And how would she find that out? Care to explain that to me? Because I'm sure you don't want my wrath against you. Do you, Counselor and Prof.?" Alex asks with her courtroom voice.
"Because if she asks, I will sing like a canary. I'm far more afraid of Liv's wrath and her being on a war path. Especially when it concerns you, Counselor Benson-Cabot." Casey answers back with her courtroom voice.
"Sorry Alex, but you are on your own here. I'm going with Novak here. I want to life longer than today when Detective Benson, or maybe I should say Detective 'Badass' Benson, wakes up. I'm not planning on digging my grave." Angie answers, trying not laugh but fails miserably.
Angie is laughing about the 'my horse is bigger then your horse contest' going on between the two attorney's. And the she sees that Olivia is awake and judging by the look on her face followed their discussion. Both Alex and Casey turns to face Angie. One blonde and one auburn, perfectly shaped, eyebrow raised up. Looking from one to the other Angie winks her eyebrow.
"You two are playing hard ball or 'my horse is bigger then your horse' if you would prefer that, while you should be worried about the ass chewing, which I'm sure you both will be receiving, as soon as Detective Benson is able to speak. Since you both failed to notice that she is awake. And judging by the look on her face, she perfectly understands what you two are talking about." Angie says, with a small smile around her lips.
Alex turns around just to see the glare in Olivia's eyes. Oh yes, Olivia certainly heard the entire conversation. Alex doesn't care. She is just happy that her wife is awake.
"Liv, you're awake. You wouldn't wake up. I was so worried about you." Alex cries.
Seeing the emotions in Alex's eyes and on her face, Olivia's eyes soften. She squeezes Alex's hand. Letting her now that they are ok. She turns her head to look at Angie and then lowers her gaze on the breathing tube and back up to Angie. Angie understands what Olivia is trying to say.
"I'll go get Prof. Taymar. Let's see if we can or need to convince him to take out the breathing tube. Alright, Detective?" Angie asks.
Olivia nods with her head. Angie smiles at the three women and leaves the room to find Prof. Taymar and bring him to Olivia. Looking at Alex and Casey, Olivia shakes her head. Both women knows what the Detective means. Alex picks up the sandwiches from Olivia's night stand and opens the packing. She takes one sandwich out and starts eating it with one hand. With the other hand she takes back Olivia's hand and intertwines their fingers. Even though Olivia can't smile due to the breathing tube, Alex can see it in her eyes. As can Casey.
"Don't worry, Liv. It's not like you have slept for days. I managed to get her something to eat while you were in surgery. You surprised us by not waking up immediately after they brought you into your room. That's all. You've slept for about 5 hours. So we got worried. Just to get it clear, you do know you have flown to Houston to get a surgery and treatment, right?" Casey asks.
Olivia nods. Alex and Casey both are glad that Olivia remembers it. That it seems like Olivia doesn't have memory loss this time. Alex has swallowed the last bite when Angie comes back into the room with Prof. Taymar. She told the Prof. not to tell the good news, about Olivia not being pregnant. She knows that Alex wants to tell her that herself. And when they are alone, or with Casey being the only other person in the room.
"Detective Benson, I'm Prof. Taymar. I'm the surgeon who has performed the surgery on your head." Prof. Taymar says.
Olivia nods.
"Prof. Cavanaugh told me that you want the breathing tube removed. Normally I would wait with that. Because I don't know you and for that I want to be sure that it's alright to do it. However, Prof. Cavanaugh knows you and she assured me that it is alright to remove the tube. I trust her opinion, she is one of the best neurosurgeon's that I know. You know the procedure for removing the tube? Shake yes if you do and shake no if you don't." Prof. Taymar says.
Olivia shakes yes. Obviously she knows it by now.
"Good. Now do you want me to do it, or Prof. Cavanaugh? I won't be offended if you want Prof. Cavanaugh to do it. I don't know everything that happened to your wife and yourself, but I do know that things happened. So I understand it if you want Prof. Cavanaugh to take out the tube." Prof. Taymar says.
Olivia turns her head to look at Angie and nods her head. Angie smiles and nods back.
"It's alright, Detective. I'll do it. Prof. Taymar, Casey, could you step outside for a moment, please. I will call you back inside if I've removed the tube. Oh and Prof. before you ask or object, Mrs. Benson will stay in the room. She won't leave her wife's side. She knows what happens." Angie says.
Casey snickers at Angie's comment. And looks at Prof. Taymar to see if he stays silent or will object and meets Counselor Benson-Cabot. Both Olivia and Angie are looking at the Prof. too. Angie with her lips curled in a smile as she sees that the Prof. is going to object.
"Mrs. Benson, you aren't..." Prof. Taymar says.
Alex doesn't even let him finish.
"Prof. Taymar, excuse me for being rude and interrupting you. First of all, I thought I made it clear to you that I won't leave my wife's side during our staying in this clinic. Apparently something went wrong in that conversation since you tried to object. So allow me to make it clear to you, in words that you do understand. It will be a cold day in hell before I would even consider leaving my wife's side. Let alone do it.
Secondly, the only area I won't be at my wife's side will be the OR. And if you or one of your colleagues tries to keep me away from my wife, aside from said area, you better have a damn good legal presentation. Because you can be sure I will sue you with everything I can. I promise you that. It's not an empty threat. But feel free to try it.
Lastly, I'm not being a bitch without a reason, I just happen to be very protective when it concerns my wife. And if you think this is bad, you don't want to stand up against my wife. Because she is far more protective and defending about me than the other way around. So if I were you I would think twice before pissing her off or make her angry with me being the subject. Did I make myself clear this time, Prof.?" Alex asks with her courtroom voice, and the death glare that everyone on the receiving end fears.
The Prof. has the good grace to not look into, the now, icy blue eyes, and nods before he quickly leaves the room. Casey follows him after winking at Alex and Olivia, and with a big smile on her face. Angie burst out in laughter before she speaks.
"I just say it because you can't say it yourself now, Detective. Some people just don't know when to shut their big mouths." Angie says, waggling her eyebrows.
Olivia shakes her head vigorously and then waggle her own eyebrows. Then the Detective looks at Alex. How proud and amused she is, clearly in her eyes.
And was it a nice surprise? I thought it is. ADA Alex Benson-Cabot for the people, ladies and gentlemen.
Be afraid... be very afraid, Prof. Taymar... Ha ha.
Sorry peeps, I got carried away a bit with my last comment.
