Chapter 42

"Save it. I'm not interested in your apologies. No matter how sincere they may or not may be." Alex interrupts the Director, angrily and sarcastically.

Casey whispers in Alex's ear that Olivia is out of surgery and will be transported to the recovery room in 10 minutes and that they come to get the blonde in half an hour to be with Olivia for a few minutes. Alex nods at Casey that she heard her and then turns back to the Director.

"Excuse me?" Prof. Maray asks.

"You heard me. I don't buy anything for them. Two members of your staff screwed up. Well one, the other just played Russian roulette with my wife's life. She may have made it trough surgery but there's no guaranty that she's alright or will be. I thought this was a well respected center and that this sort of things wouldn't happen here. Turns out I was wrong about that. And if you think I will sit down and hold back you'll have another one coming, Director." Alex says with her courtroom voice that makes perps pee in there pants.

"Mrs. Benson, we fired the lab technician immediately and are investigating this very seriously. He will be brought in front of the Medical Disciplinary Tribunal. We also have suspended Prof. Taymar. And I can assure you we will find out what he did that made the lab technician do what he did. And if needed we'll bring him in front of the MDT too." Prof. Maray answers.

"That's not good enough. The highest punishment they can get there is that their license will be taken for good. But they will not pay or sentenced for what happened to my wife. And if you don't take further actions immediately you are gonna get it too. Prof. Cavanaugh here will look for another facility to go to and we will leave this center as soon as it's safe for my wife to be transported." Alex answers coldly.

"Mrs. Benson, please, I know that you are angry and you have every right.." Prof. Maray starts.

"You're damn right I'm angry. I'm more than angry, I'm furious as hell. Don't try the 'let's be reasonable' speech on me. It won't work. Do you know what I do for a living Prof.?" Alex asks.

"No I do not. I only know that your wife is a Detective for the NYPD." Prof. Maray answers nervously.

"Well let me tell you it then. I'm a prosecutor for the DA's office in NY. I'm assigned to my wife's unit. SVU. They investigate Sex Crimes. The woman on my left, Ms. Carmichael, was until very recently a federal prosecutor. The woman on my right, Ms. Novak, is also a prosecutor for the same unit as I am. So do you really think I'll let them walk away with this? If you do believe that you're a fool. And I put it mildly then." Alex answers harshly.

The Director swallows hard he now knows that his center and both persons responsible are in very bad weather. They are in major trouble. But he has to try to get the blonde in front of him to change her mind. Not knowing that is impossible to do.

"Mrs. Benson are you sure that's the best thing you can do? Pressing charges I mean. I'm sure there is a way we can handle this. A better way for both parties. Not to mention the time a law suit can take and the cost of it." Prof. Maray says.

"Money won't be a problem Prof. I have enough of that. Perhaps you know the Cabot's from New York? Well I'm one of them. My name is Alexandra Benson-Cabot. I took my wife's last name when we married. And you're only trying to save your own ass here." Alex says sharply, glaring at the Director.

Now the Director looks terrified. He'd heard about the Cabot's from NY. He knows that he can't settle this for a couple of hundred thousand dollars. She would laugh at him for even suggesting it. He decides to try to talk Alex out of it one last time. Hoping against the odds that they can keep this out of the courtroom.

"Mrs. Benson is there no other way we can make an arrangement?" Prof. Maray asks defeated.

"No there is not. Now please leave. My wife is out of surgery and they will come here to take me to her soon. Ms. Carmichael will walk you out and ask you a couple of things." Alex answers.

Abby walks to the Director and leads him out of Olivia's room. As soon as Abby had closed the door behind her Alex turns to Angie.

"Can you look for a facility that is the best and closest to here? And can find out when it's safe for Liv to be transported to there?" Alex asks.

"Yes of course I can. I'll go and find out when it's safe for Detective Benson to be transported and look for a facility as soon as I know when we can leave here." Angie answers.

"Thank you Angie. I just want to get Liv out of here as soon as possible. I don't trust them here anymore. The only thing you need keep in mind is that we need to stay at a reasonable distance from Houston to be able to go to court. But that's all." Alex says.

"I know. I'll try to find something as close as we can be. I'll come back here as soon as I find something but call me if you need in the mean time." Angie says.

"I will." Alex answers.

Angie nods at Alex and Casey and leaves Olivia's room too. Now Alex and Casey are the only ones left in the Detective's room. Alex looks at the empty spot where here wife's bed should be with her wife in it and shakes her head. She has a nagging feeling that her wife is not alright even though she survived the surgery. Alex stands up and walks to the window and stares outside. Trying to collect her thoughts and to think of something then what's happening now. Not that it's possible to think about anything else than Olivia and the state the Detective might be in. Casey holds her distance sensing that the blonde attorney needs some space and stays silent. Alex is still standing in front of the window and staring out of it when there's a knock on the door and the door opens. Slowly Alex turns around and sees a nurse entering the room.

"Mrs. Benson, I am Daisy. I'm here to take you to your wife." Daisy says.

"How... How is my wife doing?" Alex asks softly.

"It's too soon to tell you that." Daisy answers.

"How is it possible that no one in this damn clinic can tell me how my wife is doing? You have the most modern equipment here and yet you aren't able to tell what state my wife is in." Alex asks frustrated.

"Mrs. Benson, we need to wait for your wife to wake up. Until then we can't say how she's doing. It may take some time for her to wake up and we'll take scans if it takes to long for her to wake up." Daisy answers patiently.

"Well take me to my wife than. I want to see her now." Alex says with a harsh tone in her voice.

"That's why I'm here, so let's go." Daisy answers.

Alex turns to Casey.

"Can you and Abby take care of everything? I want to focus on Liv only. Be with her." Alex asks softly.

"Yes of course. Don't worry about it, Abby and I will do everything we can. You go to Olivia now and stay with her when she gets back here." Casey answers.

"Thank you, Casey." Alex says.

The blonde turns around and walks out of the room behind the nurse. A couple of minutes later Alex is in the recovery room and next to Olivia's bed. The nurse told her she had 5 minutes to stay with her wife after that she needed to get back to Olivia's room and as soon as it was possible they would take Olivia back to her room. Alex protested against the nurse and told her that she would stay with her wife until she could go back to her room and that she wouldn't take no for an answer. Of course the nurse knows what's happened with Olivia and decides to look the other way and let Alex stay with the Detective.

Alex is still sitting at Olivia's bed when they're there to take the Detective back to her room. Olivia still didn't wake up and Alex is getting more worried every minute. The nurses wheeling Olivia back to her room with Alex walking next to the bed holding Olivia's hand. When they come back into Olivia's room Casey and Abby are waiting there. One look at Alex's face tells them that Olivia didn't wake up yet and that Alex is really worried. After a couple of minutes the nurses are done with everything they needed to do and they leave after telling Alex that if something changes or if Olivia wakes up she needs to press the call button and that a nurse will come and check on her in an hour or close to that. Alex is sitting on the left side of Olivia's bed and looks at the Detective.

"Something is wrong with Liv, I just know it." Alex says with a voice full with emotions.
