No More Smurfing Chances
Chapter 6
There was nothing left...
He would be like this forever...
He might as well use the rope. End it all...
The darkness would be his only friend...
These thoughts kept popping up in Gargy Smurf's head. The more he tried to ignore them, the more they taunted him. Daring him to do what the others wanted. What the Smurfs wanted!
He now had a thumping headache from his drinking session with Papa. Even if he wanted to hang himself, there was no way he could climb up high enough. Just trying to stand made him all dizzy.
His only course of action was to escape. Take his chances with the wild animals. He didn't trust the Smurfs, one minute they were kind to him, the next they showed their true colours in wanting him dead. He would never give them the satisfaction of defeating him at last and he still had his pride.
He crawled along the floor for a while, he noticed that in some places the walls which were made of wood didn't quite meet the dirt floor, he could dig his way out maybe? He looked around the grain store and in the gloom he spied a shovel, he also noticed a large knife. How silly of them to leave those lying around in a 'jail'.
Yes, that would do. Pushing the knife into his belt around his red leggings, he dragged the shovel back to a promising digging spot and quickly got to work. Now that he had something to do, he could feel the grogginess leaving him. He would dig for his freedom and get away as far as he could.
He had no thoughts of revenge. Not yet anyway. This was pure survival, he was digging for what remained of his miserable life.
He made a vow to himself;
'Whatever happened, he would not let the Smurfs be the ones to end his existence. That would be worse than death itself. All he ever wanted was to be successful and rich. Why did it have to be so hard?'
It didn't take long to make a hole big enough to squeeze through. It was still night, all the Smurf houses were in darkness. There was no-one to challenge him. Or so he thought.
"Where are you going father?" came a voice out of the darkness.
It was Hackus. He had been sitting outside the grain store. He had heard what had happened and was worried about Gargy Smurf. The others thought he was just a simple, bumbling fool and they had told him that Gargy was in big trouble. He still cared for the human who had given him life. Even if he was evil and had been cruel to him.
"Get away from me! You are not my son! You are a just a piece of animated clay and have no purpose!"
"But father I still care about you. What can I do to make you be proud of me?"
Gargy Smurf wanted to shout out some choice words but his mind was racing all over the place. This fool was going to alert the others, he had to get away, but how? Maybe he could get Hackus to help him escape. He shook his head at the thought. He might end up having to explain things in triplicate and didn't have the patience.
He started to walk off into the woods, but his creation was following him. It seemed that he needed to be visually persuaded to keep his distance.
Gargy Smurf lifted up the back of his purple robes and pulled out the large knife. Pointing it in a threatening manner he hissed;
"Go away, or I'll take your life"
Hackus stood stock still, tears started to run down his cheeks and he bawled!
Lights started to come on in some of the nearby Smurf homes and Hefty Smurf was the first on the scene.
"Too cowardly to do the decent thing, eh Gargy? Now you're threatening a fellow Smurf with a weapon?! When I get hold of you I'm going to smurf your smurf and wear it as a trophy!"
And then Hefty rushed at the terrified Smurf hybrid. There was nothing else to do for Gargy but run towards Hackus and in one swift move he was behind the ginger smurf's back and the knife was glinting inches away from his exposed blue throat.
"Come any nearer and I'll slit him! I mean it!"
The knife pulled into Hackus's thick neck and a tiny trickle of red blood ran down the blade.
Hefty started to back off
"Some Smurf go and get Papa NOW!" shouted Hefty.
Vexy was now on the scene and she covered her mouth in shock at what she was witnessing.
"Let him go!" she screamed at her ex-father
Gargy Smurf was still hiding behind Hackus, the blade of the knife was digging into his creation
"Please, please..Father, you're hurting me so much!"
Almost imperceptibly, he released the pressure on the other Smurf's neck and growled at the others.
"Move back, or I will do it. I mean it! I've nothing to lose!"
Hefty looked as if he would explode in anger, it took all of Vexy's strength to pull him back. Where was Papa?
A large crowd had now gathered behind Hefty and vexy, they all had grim faces. This kind of thing had never happened in the village before. Any respect they had begun to feel for Gargy Smurf was fast disappearing. Vexy turned around and shouted for everyone to move back. Some did but most stayed where they stood.
The taunts then started...
"He's a coward, he'll start crying!" shouted one Smurf
" He'll want his mummy!" laughed another.
Sharing some kind of 'in-joke' the crowd of Smurfs started to laugh as a whole. Gargy Smurf couldn't believe his ears. What did it take for him to be thought of as a serious threat around here?
But he was wasting precious time. He looked around behind him and saw that a few hundred yards through some trees, there was the river. If he could drag Hackus with him and get to the water he could escape by going over the waterfall. He'd never be able to outrun them all now and it was true, he was a coward. For all his bluster and threats he had never seriously hurt anyone.
It was all smoke and mirrors.
The Smurfs knew him too well.
He whispered into Hackus's ear.
"Listen Hackus, I've got to get away from here. You can see how angry they are. They mean to hurt me and I'm frightened. Will you help me escape and I will always think of you as my 'Real boy', my son."
"Hackus would be very proud!" replied the ginger haired Smurf
"Then help me by running with me. We have to get to the river and float away to safety"
"But Hackus can't swim!"
"Don't worry, I'll help you" replied Gargy Smurf. This was a lie of course. When it came to survival, sacrifices would have to be made.
Before any of the Smurfs could react, the fugitive hybrid Smurf and his hostage made a run for the river.
Vexy and Hefty looked at each other and realised a few seconds too late what was going on.
"Quick! Every Smurf to the river, they are escaping!"
Panting hard, Gargy Smurf and Hackus made it to the edge of the river. The banks seemed ever so high now that he was the size of a Smurf. Hackus stood on the edge, hesitating.
The evil Smurf pushed him in first
Hefty was coming up fast and managed to grab Gargy Smurf round the waist. But his momentum carried both of them into the river, where they were carried off by the strong current.
Vexy and the others could only watch helplessly as all three were swept away to certain death. The waterfall had a bad reputation.
No Smurf ever came out of it alive!
To be continued...
