Mum

"Mum."

Kurenai turned and smiled at her five year old son. "Yes, sweetie?"

"Why don't I have a Daddy like all the other kids?"

Her face fell. She had known she would have to face this question one day, but no amount of knowledge of it or mental preparation had left her ready to hear those words. She knew the answer she had to give, having all the answers was what being a mum was all about.

"Oh, sweetie." She knelt down in front of her son. "You know how people talk about the Great War?"

"Uh-huh."

"It was right before that. The fighting was getting intense. The bad guys." Kurenai had to pause and compose herself. There was no way she would let her son see her cry. "The bad guys were attacking villages, looking for power. They were coming for our village, and your father, he was sent out as part of a mission to fight the bad guys. He fought them, but they were too strong." She took a deep breath. "Your daddy died protecting us and the village."

Little Hiruzen nodded as he took all of this in. "So Daddy was protecting us?"

"Yes."

"Well he left me with the best Mum ever." Hiruzen smiled at his Mum. "'Cause you have to do the work of the Mum and the Dad. And you look after me the very best."

I'm sorry! Forgive me!
