Hello, my lovely readers. Finally, it's Klaus' chapter! I'm going to shut up now and say… On with the show…
Chapter 19: Worst Date/First Date/Prom Date
Prom was not one of the days that Klaus Mikaelson ever expected himself to truly give a damn about. It would be an okay night with his mates and a lovely lady of his choice, not a night that he pinned his hopes and dreams on. However, that was before Caroline said yes. Now, it was extremely important to him that everything went just so. Nothing could be left to chance because this was their first official date.
"Klaus, what is taking you so damned long?" Damon Salvatore called from outside the bathroom door. It was after all, Damon's bathroom. "I know you don't want to try to jump Care the minute you two are alone and shit but I really don't want you do that in there."
Klaus let out a nervous laugh while zipping his pants. Walking over to the bathroom door, he pulled it open. "I have no idea what you mean, Damon," he replied with a good natured eye roll.
Chuckling, Damon looked at his friend. "You look good. Hell, I think I'd go with you if I didn't already have a date. Kind of."
"Hey, you said I'd be the one that you would go with if you liked dudes," Alaric complained while adjusting his bow tie.
Damon grinned. "You know there is enough of me to go around," he replied. Turning to Klaus, he grinned from ear to ear. "So, did you remember to make a reservation for tonight?"
Feeling his stomach clench, Klaus groaned. "No!"
"I've got you covered, man," Damon reassured him. "This night is going to be perfect for you and Caroline. Only the best for the two of you. I think it's the bridal suite," he informed Klaus while pulling out his phone and typing quickly. He held up the phone, showing Klaus a picture of the room that he was going to be staying in that night. "No pressure," Damon joked, patting Klaus on the back.
"No, none at all," Klaus said, pulling out a tiny, black box.
"Whoa! What is that?" Alaric asked, staring at the box.
"Nothing," Klaus replied hastily, trying to re-pocket the box when Damon grabbed his wrist.
"No, Nik! You can't," Damon complained. "Don't ruin the night like that."
Klaus jerked his hand away. "It's just a promise. Not that I'm asking her to run off this summer or something like that…" going to sit down on the edge of Damon's bed. Klaus opened the box and stared at the heart shaped diamond ring. "It's not like she'll say yes anyway. She wants to go on to MIT."
"Klaus," Damon shifted from foot to foot. "Just wait. Ask her during graduation, next year. It's all about timing and by then you'll have a better idea about what you want."
"I want Caroline," Klaus replied. "And a football scholarship so I can go anywhere I bloody well want. Then I can pick a school close to Caroline. We can live together."
"Klaus," Damon was interrupted by Alaric.
"It's time. If we're going to pick up our dates, we need to go," Alaric pointed out.
"Yeah," Klaus added, giving Damon a long look. He did not appreciate the vote of no confidence when he supported most, if not all, of Damon's follies. Some friend Damon was.
They headed out of the room to be confronted by a tipsy Stefan who was grinning from ear to ear. "Hey, can I get a ride in your limo, big bro?" he inquired.
"Sure," Damon shrugged as he eyed Stefan warily.
Walking down the stairs and out the door, they were confronted by the sight of Silas down on his knees trying to fix a very black garter on Elena Gilbert's leg. "Hello, boys," she called as Silas groaned. "It's not high enough!" she complained. "You need to put it up there," she placed her hand under the tulle of her skirt, causing Silas to shake his head. "Men. Do any of you want to help?" she called.
"Nope," Alaric replied.
"Spoken for," Klaus added.
"I would rather stick my hands in acid," Damon told her with his hands jammed into his pockets.
"Whatever!" Elena snapped. Pushing Silas away, she opened a door and plunged into the backseat of the limo.
Klaus was the last to get into the limo. He wished he wasn't because Elena tried to sit in his lap the moment he found a seat. "Hello there, lover. Want to fix me a drink?" she inquired with a giggle.
"No. Thank you," Klaus told her before placing her in Damon's lap.
Damon took Elena and sat her on the floor where she pouted up at him before pulling a flask out from her cleavage. She began to drink and sing until the limo stopped. Elena announced she was going to help Klaus collect Caroline until Damon dragged her back into the limo by her skirt.
Taking a deep, calming breath, Klaus rang the doorbell to be greeted by Liz Forbes. "Hello, Klaus. You look nice," she informed him with a smile.
"Thank you, Sheriff," Klaus said politely. "Is Caroline ready?"
"Oh, didn't she tell you that she's getting ready with Amara, at the Gilbert's?" Liz asked with a look of sympathy as Klaus' shoulders slumped.
"Thank you. I'm sure she just forgot to tell me," Klaus replied with a forced smile. Heading back to the car, Klaus stared daggers at Elena who was grinning happily back at him.
"Oops. It must have slipped my mind to tell you that 'Mara, Care and Bon Bon are getting ready together," Elena said with a shrug. "Guess that it'll save us some time if we just go ahead and pick up Damon's date next."
"Or we could get mine," Stefan interjected with a wide smile. No one knew who Stefan's mystery date was but he seemed psyched about it.
"Okay. Let's get that over with," Damon said. "Then we can pick up Jenna. She's at your house?" he questioned Elena who paused from opening the bottle of champagne in the cooler.
"Probably," Elena said.
"I thought she wasn't going," Stefan snapped.
"Not with you," Alaric muttered under his breath. The ride to Stefan's mystery date's house was longer than they had expected when he jumped out of the car and sprinted to the door. Each of the occupants of the limo were vying to get a glimpse of the girl in question who Stefan could be seen making out with on her front porch.
"Whoa," Elena cracked up when she saw the girl.
"Who is it?" Klaus demanded as Elena leaned back in her seat next to Damon.
"It's a baby!" Elena told him.
Klaus looked out to see Stefan coming toward them arm in arm, with the girl that he had been working with for a large part of the year. Feeling the urge to kill Stefan, Klaus forced himself to sit back when the two got inside the vehicle. "Hi," Davina greeted the group with a happy smile.
"Hey, baby, do you have I. D.?" Elena asked, looking at Davina and then laughing.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Davina questioned Elena who smirked back at her while taking a swig from the bottle of champagne.
There was another painfully long ride to the Gilbert's which Klaus had had to talk Damon into directing the driver to stop at next. Damon looked sick when they pulled up and refused to look at the house. "Don't you want to say hello to my mommy?" Elena coaxed as she got off the floor where she had been for the last five minutes and straddled Damon. "Don't you miss her?" she whispered into his ear before leaning backwards, with her hands on the floor so that Klaus feared that her breasts would fall right out of her dress.
"I'll be back," Klaus said.
"Take your time," Stefan replied with his hand on Davina's thigh. This really would be a trying night.
Striding up to the Gilbert's front door, Klaus hit the buzzer and waited. After a moment, he hit it again before Isobel answered. "Hello, Klaus," she said hoarsely. "What are you doing here?" she questioned him.
Opening his mouth, Klaus started to reply when he noticed the bottle of bourbon that the former teacher was holding in her hand. When she noticed his stare, she shoved it behind her back while closing the top of the fluffy robe she was wearing. "I was looking for my date. Caroline. She was supposed to be here," he told her, peering past her and into the shockingly untidy house. The Gilbert home was always clean and smelled like cookies. Not anymore it appeared.
"Oh, they're at Bonnie's. I think. Or were they here?" Isobel looked confused, holding her head. "Sorry, Klaus. I have a really bad headache. Maybe you could call them and ask? Have a good night," she murmured, closing the door.
When Klaus got back into the limo, he found that Elena was pressed up against a door, staring out the window. "She's drunk," she stated like it was an answer.
"Yes," Klaus said.
"Great," Elena said while Damon rubbed the bridge of his nose.
Pulling out his phone, Klaus texted Caroline, "Where R U?"
The limo began to move again and Damon got out minutes later to retrieve Hayley Marshall who barely glanced at anyone in the car. "Hey, princess," Elena greeted her to which Hayley simply stared out the window. "Gee, Damon. I don't think this one is going to be all that fun tonight."
Klaus ignored the spat going on around him when his phone began to vibrate. "Caroline?" he answered.
"Hey, where are you?" Caroline shouted over the sound of loud music.
"I'm in the limo trying to find to you," Klaus told her.
"What?" Caroline shouted. "It's so loud in here. Can you repeat that?"
"I said we were trying to find you!" Klaus shouted back.
"Oh, I'm at the school. You're all late!" Caroline yelled at him. "I had to show up with my girls and Jack. People thought I was stood up. Good job, Mikaelson!" she continued to yell but didn't sound angry.
"I will be there soon," Klaus called but Caroline had already hung up.
Sighing, Klaus looked up to find that Elena was giving Hayley a lap dance. "Oh, for God's sake," Klaus cried when Elena started to unzip her dress.
"Everybody, out of the car," Marcel who had been riding up front with the driver called as he opened the door. "It's time to get inside." Damon smirked at Rebekah who was dressed in a long, gold dress and had a driver's cap on her head.
"Yes, let's get this disaster over with, shall we?" Rebekah inquired as she took Marcel's arm and the two led the group toward the open front doors of the school.
Hurrying toward the gym, Klaus found that there were far too many people in the room. All he wanted was to find Caroline so that he could spend the night telling her how sorry he was for taking so long to arrive. When he caught sight of the girl of his dreams, he found that she was a vision in white. It was almost as if she knew what he was thinking the whole year. No, Damon was wrong. Tonight was the night that he needed to propose. It couldn't wait.
"Caroline," Klaus called, only to be ignored as she stepped onto the dance floor with Amara and Bonnie. They were all laughing and enjoying themselves so Klaus decided that he would get a drink from the punch bowl.
"Hello, brother," Elijah greeted him with a grin.
"Not the type of event that I would expect you to attend, Elijah," Klaus greeted him.
"You never know. This night could turn out to be quiet interesting," Elijah surmised, looking over the teens dancing and singing to the music.
"Perhaps," Klaus said when Caroline spotted him and waved as Damon pointed to him. Maybe Damon was a good friend after all.
"I see that Damon has made a new friend," Elijah muttered, causing Klaus' eyes to move to Hayley who was dancing with Damon now.
"Oh, that. They're working on some top secret project together," Klaus told his brother. "If you will excuse me." Without another word to his brother, he moved to scoop Caroline off her feet and twirl her around the floor.
"Hello to you, too," Caroline giggled as Klaus set her down and kissed her on the cheek. "I've been all over the place trying to find you. Bonnie said you might have run off with some other artist," she confided in him with a smile.
"Never. I could not wait to get to you, love," Klaus whispered, pressing Caroline closer to him.
"Really?" Caroline laughed. "I thought that you just wanted to find a better dancer. You know I have two left feet."
"No one is better at anything in my eyes than you," Klaus told her, running his hand down her back.
"Klaus Mikaelson, are you drunk?" Caroline accused with a smile as he twirled.
"On the sight of you," Klaus replied.
"Oh, my God. Look at Stefan. Isn't that girl like fifteen?" Bonnie exclaimed, coming to dance closer to them with Kol.
"She's a tad young for him. I'll agree with you on that front," Kol added, staring at Stefan who was in the middle of the floor with Davina. "What the bloody hell is he thinking anyway? Nik, you spend more time with her than the rest of us lot. You go talk some sense into the girl."
Feeling irritated, Klaus glanced at Davina who really should not be with Stefan. Klaus had heard stories about how many girls that were in their class he had seduced. "Klaus," Caroline urged. "It's fine. I'll be okay. Enzo, come dance with me while Klaus takes care of that kid over there," she called to Enzo who came to join her.
This was beyond ridiculous. Why couldn't Kol deal with this? He hadn't actually come here with anyone. Or maybe Damon. It was not as if he and Hayley were having the time of their lives together; they looked kind of bored.
Ignoring his friend's failed night for the time being, Klaus strode over to Stefan and Davina. "Hello, you two. Mind if I cut in, Stefan?" he asked with a wide smile.
Stefan smirked. "Not really, Klaus. Shouldn't you be entertaining your fiancée? Oh, wait. I mean friend, who you can't admit that you have feelings for. I'm confused. Which one is it?" Stefan cocked his head to the side, examining Klaus who was having a hard time controlling his irritation, again. This night was supposed to be about he and his beloved, not everyone the hell else.
"Caroline is dancing with her other friends and I just want one dance with Davina. How 'bout it, are you game?" Klaus asked, grinning at Davina in a manner that usually lifted her spirits when she was having trouble with a new work.
"Okay. One dance, dad," Davina replied with a teasing smile before letting go of Stefan and taking Klaus' extended hand.
Smirking at Stefan, Klaus danced as far away from the worst of Salvatore brothers as he could while keeping his voice low. "Davina, I want you to make an excuse, and I will find someone to escort you home," he ordered the girl whose eyes flitted up to his face with a deep frown.
"NO!" Davina cried, "Why would I do that? I like Stefan. And he likes me, unlike some other guys that I could mention here tonight. And he's being nice to me. So, no, I will not go home. You're my friend, not my boss." Pulling away from Klaus, Davina strode off toward the punch bowl where a smiling Stefan was waiting for her.
Klaus swore under his breath. "That didn't look like it went at all well for you," Elena murmured with a smile as she appeared next to Klaus. "Want to dance with me?"
"No," Klaus replied.
"Fine. Be mean like Damon and everyone else here tonight. I'm not that drunk," Elena said, weaving off.
Klaus shook his head as he headed toward Caroline who was free for the next dance. Taking Caroline into his arms, Klaus felt better. "How did it go with the kid?" Caroline asked him with a worried expression.
"She isn't really in the mood to listen. And who can blame her, Caroline? Look at this place," he waved a hand at the room that looked like someone had been designing it for years. "We're young and we should be having a good time, not worrying about other people tonight. Just for tonight."
"I don't know, Klaus. I would hate to think that someone got hurt," Caroline replied. "Hey, Damon," she called, waving Damon over. "Can you go talk to that girl?" she pointed at a clueless Davina.
"Sure," Damon said. "Can you entertain my date while I'm gone? I think I'm turning out to be the worst date she's ever had."
Klaus gritted his teeth. 'Thanks to everyone else he was in the middle of the worst date that he'd ever been on,' he thought silently.
"Not a problem," Caroline agreed. "Hey, Hayley! Come join us," she called with a wide smile and Klaus just wanted someone to kill him, right there and then.
"Caroline," Klaus began when there was a tap on his shoulder and it took everything in him to not growl. And he was supposed to be the even tempered one in his group. Not tonight.
"Hey, Klaus. Mind if I cut in?" Jackson inquired and Klaus looked at Hayley who was looking at the wall.
"By all means," Klaus said, feeling relieved that one of his fellow students would take the cheer captain off his hands. That was until Jackson took Caroline's hand. 'Damn it!' Klaus swore silently.
"Thanks. Looks like Amara and her ex have their hands full with that," Jackson nodded toward Elena who was struggling with her sister and Silas. Before Klaus could respond Jackson whisked Caroline off. This left Klaus glaring at Hayley.
Hayley did not seem to care about what kind of look he was giving her because she too busy staring daggers into Elijah's back. When his brother got close enough to him, Klaus took Hayley by the arm and flung her into his brother's arms. "You two enjoy each other's company. I have to interrupt a dance," he snapped. Storming toward Jackson, Klaus placed his hands behind his back.
"Jackson. I do believe that this dance is over and I have something important that I need to discuss with Caroline," he said staring at Jackson. The dark haired teen looked around.
"Yeah, sure. I think Amara is done with her fight with Elena," Jackson told them and strolled off in search of his girlfriend.
"Caroline, I wanted to ask you about something," Klaus began when there was a sudden screech from the speakers and everyone turned to the stage.
"Is this thing on?" Anna called, looking around the room. "Sorry about the white noise. Seriously that stuff will give you swimmer's ear for a week." Everyone laughed while Anna smiled back at them. "So, as you all know, every year we do this thing where we elect a king and queen of the prom and we've tallied your votes. This year's king is -"
"Caroline, I lo-" Klaus tried to say quickly when Anna shouted. "Klaus Mikaelson. Klaus, where are you?" she shouted to him, looking around.
Feeling like killing everyone at the dance, Klaus forced a smile as Caroline grinned at him and clapped her hands.
Having no other choice, Klaus walked up to stand with Anna and allow her to place his bloody crown on his head. "Thank you everyone," Klaus called out to the people assembled.
"And this year's queen of the prom is…" Anna grinned from ear to ear. "Hayley Marshall," she shouted into the mic as everyone clapped and Klaus wanted to kill everyone with some painful instrument. Damn them all to a bloody, painful hell.
Hayley marched up the steps and allowed Anna to crown her. She smiled tightly at the crowd. "Now, it is time for out king and queen to have their first dance together," Anna announced and Klaus forced himself to take Hayley's hand and descend the platform. They were about to dance when the scene was, thankfully, interrupted by the sounds of loud moans.
Looking at the screen that had been playing footage from earlier proms, there was now a bedroom and what appeared to be, amateur porn. Klaus felt his jaw drop when he saw Sage on the screen with Stefan Salvatore. The leader of the Virgins' squad was not there tonight. However, there was no doubt she would hear about this soon enough. People began to laugh. Even Hayley let out a chuckle when she looked at Klaus who felt his lips twitching.
Caroline walked over to Klaus with Damon, Jackson, Amara, Bonnie, Enzo, Kol, Rebekah and Marcel. "Whoa, look at that," Damon whistled as he watched his little brother and Sage. "Gee, I thought Stef told me about all his conquests."
"Apparently not," Caroline said in awe as the scene changed and now Damon was on the big screen with… Hayley? "Oh, my God. Damon!"
"What in the hell is that?" the prom queen shouted. "Get that off there. I never did that," she shouted, raising her hands over her head to try to prevent people from seeing her image.
"Isn't that still Stefan's room?" Jackson asked, looking at the others.
"I would never have sex in Stef's room. That is a fake. I have a way better bed!" Damon told them with a frown.
"Can someone please take that down?" Hayley screamed, nearly in tears.
"Oh, my. Oh, E-li-jah!" Hayley cried on screen, causing the crowd to laugh.
"What in the hell?" Elijah appeared beside them. "There wasn't supposed to be sound on this thing, you idiot," he growled, grabbing a kid by the arm and shaking him.
"You did this, didn't you?" Hayley yelled at Elijah.
"Caroline," Klaus shouted over the noise. "I need to talk to you!"
"Okay," Caroline said, allowing Klaus to lead her to the other side of the room.
"Caroline, there is something I have been meaning to tell you -" Klaus began when Davina came running toward them.
"Can you, please, take me home?" Davina asked. "Stefan's been taping having sex with like a ton of the girls here!" she yelled at them with mascara running down her face.
"Is that why he wanted me to go to prom with him?" Caroline shouted with a look of outrage. "He knows I like Jack! Seriously!"
"Excuse me!" Klaus blurted, feeling his cheeks burn red.
"You didn't know?" Elena questioned him, a grin spreading across her face. "She spent the summer pining after him thinking that he would notice her as more than a friend. Then he started dating my sister. Isn't unrequited love a bitch?"
Caroline bit her lower lip. "Klaus, I'm sorry. I should have told you earlier. You're my best friend. I tell you everything."
"And he doesn't tell you shit," Elena told her. "Lookie what I found in his pocket?" she questioned Caroline, holding up her left hand with Caroline's ring on her finger. "If I gain a pound it might fit. Too bad his intended doesn't feel the same way…"
"Who was the ring for, Klaus?" Caroline asked him, looking confused.
"It does not matter anymore, Caroline, good night. Davina," he ushered the girl forward when he heard Caroline gasp.
"Oh. Oh, my God. Oh, no. KLAUS! KLAUS! WAIT!" Caroline called after him.
Nearing the limo, Klaus stopped when Caroline came to stand before him, looking radiant. "Klaus, was that? Was the ring for me?"
Klaus smirked down at her. "I guess you'll never know. Have a good night, Caroline. I hope you find what it is that you're looking for," he told her, kissing her on the forehead before opening the door for Davina. Climbing inside, he refused to give Caroline another moment's thought.
Oh, it hurt to write that but we have about another twenty to thirty chapters of this story to go. The crucial part is that Caroline now knows about Klaus' feelings for her which will force her to examine her own.
Answers to reviews:
Imagination Running Wild: Stefan is. He's pretty horrible right now which plays into the next chapter of this story when someone tries to make him make amends.
Katerinapevrna: No, no, no! Not in this story. Damon is not gay in this story; Stefan is just a smart ass.
JuseaPeterson: Stefan is trying to be a villain. It might be a cry for attention since he has three others brothers and sometimes gets lost in the family and high school dynamics if he doesn't do something to piss people off. Klaus' asking Caroline out was one of my fav scenes. And Davina is still learning who she can and cannot trust. Stefan, being part of the former group…
ObsessWithElijah: Yes, this Stefan is a bit like the Rippah. I have to admit that I usually like Stefan without his humanity on. It's one of the times the writers allow him to be funny.
Val: We're going to see a lot of Delena in the next chapter because the next chapter stars either Elena or Damon and they will be spending the day together. Thank you for liking this work.
Peace,
Jessica
