When Nagihiko got up the next morning, he took a long look at himself in the mirror. How could he adjust his uniform so he looked more like him? Nagihiko took an even longer look at his light blue uniform skirt. They were sold inside the school store, you could buy pencils and other things there like snacks.
Maybe he could buy a new skirt and a pair of shorts. That way, he could wear a longer skirt to school with the shorts under it. Mama would think he was still in the girl's uniform and when he got to school, he could just wear the shorts. In addition, he would start wearing his hair in clips. Then he could just take the clips out too when he got to school.
Pleased with himself, Nagihiko packed some extra money in his school bag before he headed out the door. As he passed the dresser on his way out, he saw something hanging out of his jewelry drawer. Which was very odd.
Nagihiko stopped and pulled open the drawer. The small bracelet that was hanging out of it lost it's balance and fell to the floor. It was the bracelet Rima bought him, the one with the moon. Nagihiko smiled and felt happy thinking about his memories with her.
Quickly he grabbed it and clasped it onto his wrist as he ran to school.
Rima woke up in her bed, suddenly becoming aware of herself. She didn't move though. Rima kept her eyes focused on the ceiling and suddenly felt them water. She jumped out of bed and wiped her wrist against her cheek. Rima changed faster then she ever had. Pulling her second uniform from the hamper along with some other clothes, on accident. Something dropped to the floor with a strange clink of plastic on plastic.
She threw the stray clothes into the hamper and then leaned down to see what had fell. It was the bracelet she and Nagihiko had gotten earlier at the festival. The colorful beads and shining star made the tears fall harder. She picked it up off the floor tenderly and held it to her chest.
'What have I done?'
"No we're not. You need to earn my friendship."
Rima remembered flaunting Shouta in front of Nagihiko. She even looked back, and saw him crying. How could she have been so cruel?
"What have I done?" Rima asked herself. She stuffed the bracelet into her shirt pocket and grabbed her backpack. Rima decided she was fed up of everything, she just wanted to be her own person for once. She wrote something down on a sticky note and stuck it on her door.
Her fingers unlocked the latches on her window and pulled it open. Over head was the large green garden she had looked upon for so many years. Rima eased her legs through the window and found some footing. She slowly climbed down and couldn't believe that it was actually working. Finally she felt her feet against solid ground. Rima let go and turned to see the wide open space up ahead of her.
This was amazing! Rima took a few practice steps, to see if this was real. It was real, more real then anything else. Rima began to run, she ran all the way across the yard and out the gate. She found herself actually in her alleyway, alone. Alone.
Rima smiled at the feeling of her legs move under her, of the scenery quickly passing by. Of being alone, free. She would make things up with Nagihiko. She would learn to accept Nadeshiko. Because they were the same person, the same person that she loved. This time she was sure.
Nagihiko walked through the school doors and made it his first order of business to buy that extra skirt. He confidently walked into the store and got exactly what he needed. Although, because of the fiasco the day before, his first day, the attention he encountered here was much different then Seiyo.
No one knew exactly what to think of this new student. Beautiful, stunning but at the same time, rejected by the Rima Mashiro. Reduced to crying and swearing in the middle of the hall. As his final act to stun the entire Shiro student body, he was found eating lunch with the infamous Amu Hinamori. Not that Amu or Rima had any idea of the other one; they were both famous students of Shiro elementary.
Rima known for being pretty and sweet, while Amu was known for being cool and stand off-ish. Speaking of Amu.
"Fujisaki-chan!" Amu said walking over to him.
"Hinamori-chan." Nagihiko greeted with his high pitched voice.
"I needed some new pencils, but what are you doing here?" Hinamori questioned, putting her hands on her hips.
"I thought I would get a new skirt. Just in case." Nagihiko replied.
"Ahh, not a bad idea." Amu nodded like she was very wise. Nagihiko let out a fake laugh. He liked Hinamori, but she wasn't as funny as she thought she was. Without any words the two ended up walking from the store together.
"So," Amu said lowering her voice. "any word from that so called love of your life?" Nagihiko felt sort of a crinkled feeling in his chest. Not like his heart was new and free of imperfections, but like something was off in the worst kind of way.
"No, not yet." He said lightly.
Rima walked through the front doors right then. She turned down the hall that led to the fifth grade class rooms. The first thing she saw was Nagihiko, walking down the hall, in a blue skirt with his hair down. Rima felt everything inside her well up with happiness. She ran down the hall and caught up to him.
"Nadeshiko!" She called. Nagihiko froze and Amu watched curiously. Nagi turned around just in time to see Rima rushing up to him. Rima's small body crashed into Nagihiko's and she hugged him tightly.
"G-Good morning Mashiro-san." He said awkwardly returning the hug.
"Hey look what I found." Rima pulled away and reached into her shirt pocket. She held up the bracelet like a rare piece of jewelry and smiled. "I thought I had lost it but, I'm really glad I found it."
Nagihiko wanted to swoop Rima up in his arms and twirl her around. He wanted to hug her tightly and smile and laugh, but that's not what Nadeshiko wanted to do. That's not what Nadeshiko would have done. Nagi covered his hand with his mouth and felt like crying again. He pulled down his sleeve, unveiling the moon charm he had put on that morning. Rima beamed at him.
"It's settled then! We can't ever fight like that again!" Nagihiko nodded in agreement and they hugged again.
"Wait." Amu's voice interrupted. Rima was startled because she hadn't noticed anyone there before. "This is that...is this who you've been..." Amu stuttered looking from Rima to Nagi. Nagihiko nodded.
"Hinamori-san, I want you to meet Rima Mashiro. Rima, this is Hinamori-san." Nagihiko beamed. Amu pulled Nagihiko closer to her and whispered in his ear.
"The love of your life is a girl?!" Amu whispered. Nagihiko suddenly realized his mistake.
"Uh..." He mumbled. Rima looked at his curiously, with a hint of disappointment. "It's complicated." He said to Hinamori.
"I need to talk to you Rima." Nagihiko moved away from Amu and dragged Rima off to the bathroom.
