Sorry. Haven't updated in a while. I had a camp and a family vacation going on that made updating exceptionally harder. Slightly shorter chapter, but hopefully enjoyable.
All the men were silent. They were shocked. Even though Travis was a very ADHD demigod, he still normally didn't just make a decision that would affect the group like he did. None of the men thought he would be so impulsive when it concerned all of them. He was when it was just his ass on the line, but not when it was all of them with him just as the spokesperson.
Frank broke the silence weakly with, "Oh. When is he coming over?"
Travis seemed to sense the tension in the air but decided to ignore it. He simply responded, "He's supposed to arrive in an hour."
"We can work with that." Percy said. He didn't sound angry at Travis. Shocked maybe, but not angry. Nico and Leo stayed silent. Annabeth was processing all that had the possibility of happening. She was thinking of different scenarios for when Daniel arrived. Annabeth thought that she would probably be hiding somewhere again. She decided to leave all the planning to Percy unless he wanted her to give her advice on something.
The men had lapsed into silence again. Percy seemed to be deep in thought, but the rest of them were just looking around as if they expected someone to break the silence. Frank seemed the most uncomfortable. He was nursing an idea, but wasn't completely sure it would be accepted. Annabeth could guess at what was going through Frank's head. He didn't exactly keep it hidden from his expression. It probably came from being as observing as she was along with knowing him since they were sixteen.
Then Percy, who Annabeth didn't know was watching Frank as well, said, "Frank! What are you thinking?"
Frank looked around at the others. He noticed the acute attention being given to him. Finally he sighed and said, "It's just an idea. I'm not sure about it." He lapsed into silence again.
Percy said, "We're not going to judge you. Some of our craziest ideas have saved our asses more than once. Don't worry about it."
Frank nodded. He looked at the faces of the rest of the group to find them all watching him with a look of mild interest. They hadn't even heard what his idea was and they were still ready to listen. They were very open-minded, yet Frank still found it hard to express his ideas sometimes. Most of the time they accepted them too. His problem wasn't so much a fear of others accepting them, but a fear that he wouldn't like them himself as he told it. Frank wasn't always fond of his own work. It never seemed to be up to snuff by his own standards, even when it was to everyone else.
Leo gave Frank a nudge and said, "Are you going to actually tell us the idea? Or should we play 20 Questions?"
The men chuckled and the tension was loosened by a tenfold. The group spread out from the desk area and sat other places in the room. Frank took a deep breath. He looked like he was relieved to actually had some breathing room as everyone had gone away from crowding the desk where he was sitting.
Percy made himself comfortable on Nico's bed. Annabeth tried to show Frank that she was listening by sitting attentively, but Percy decided to pull Annabeth onto the bed with him. Ungracefully, might she add. They ended up lying together sideways on the bed. The rest of the men did their best to place themselves better than their leader did. Frank, however, was too nervous to notice anything or care if he did.
"Hey Frank! I normally don't like rushing people, but we're kinda on a time limit." Percy prompted.
Frank gave a small chuckle and said, "Yeah I know. Alright. It's more of a plan of action that sort of popped into my mind when Travis told us that Daniel was coming over in an hour."
"That's fine. We just want to hear it because the rest of us are tapped out of ideas." Percy replied easily.
"Fine. So we need to keep Annabeth out of sight for the visit because they don't know she's with us, right?"
"Yes." Percy confirmed.
Frank continued, "Well, I think she should actually be able to watch what's going on instead of just listening. I think that the Yankees cap should be enough to hide her if she stays somewhere no one is going to walk near."
"Hold up." Leo interrupted. "Why does it matter if she's near a place people might walk? She can just move."
"But they might hear me." Annabeth answered.
Frank nodded his thanks before going on, "Exactly. I think the corner at the head of the bed closest to the wall." Frank gave a pause before saying, "I think that the rest of us should assume the disguises that we did when he first came. Except we shouldn't look drunk off our asses this time."
The group chuckled. Percy glanced at his watch. He said slowly, "That's a good thought. The disguises and all. Now what do you propose we tell him?"
Frank seemed to be debating something with himself before he answered, "I think we should just wait to see what he actually wants. We don't really know quite yet what he's going for coming to talk to us. We don't know who he's working for or if he's against us or not. I think we can give each other advice in different languages so he doesn't understand."
"That might work, but to start off, we'll see if he has improved on any languages before saying anything important." Percy advised. The others agreed. "Maybe we ought to let Travis talk without us getting in the way. At least to start off." He continued.
Annabeth was listening attentively. She did wonder how she might be able to pull off giving advice if it was needed. Then she remembered that she didn't know enough to give advice just like the rest of them. She assumed that one of the men would be on the bed close to where she was supposed to be standing when the time came. She could mutter into his ear and he could announce it in whatever strange language they were to choose. That got her wondering exactly how that gift worked and who they got it from.
Annabeth decided to ask, "Hey can you explain that transformation thing to me?"
The men all turned to her then looked at each other. Finally Nico answered, "We're not completely sure how it works. Our godly parents granted the gift when we turned twenty."
Before he could continue, Annabeth rounded on Percy and said, "That would have been while you were at the Naval Academy right? You would've been going into your second year."
Percy nodded while Nico continued, "That sounds right. Anyway, the ability takes concentration. All it really does is enhance features of our heritage. So I, for instance, am Italian on my mother's side. I am able to enhance Italian features. Frank, Leo, and I can do it easier than Connor, Travis, and Percy because we were born with strong features from different ethnic groups. Jason had the disadvantage at the art too."
"All demigods have the capacity to do it, but since our parents granted the gift, it makes us more efficient at it." Leo added.
Annabeth thought this was a bit much to take in, but she accepted it and went back on to the situation at hand of Daniel coming for a visit. "Alright. Now if I want to give advice, someone should be on the bed closest to the wall where I'll be so I can whisper suggestions to them to repeat for the rest of you." Annabeth said.
Slow nods all around. "Good idea." Frank praised as the others agreed.
"Okay. Now we gotta figure out how we want to approach this as non-English speaking fellows." Percy said.
"Well, we need to remember what part of our heritage each of us took." Frank said.
Leo scoffed and said, "Isn't it obvious? I did Latino, you Asian, Nico Italian, Percy probably Greek, and Travis American. Annabeth invisible."
Frank regarded Leo with an irritated expression. Most likely because he made it seem like Frank had memory loss issues or something. That would have offended anyone. Percy seemed to sense the tension building between the two of them. He tried clearing his throat, but he might have been trying to get a wall to turn and look at him for all the reaction that they showed.
Finally Nico said loudly, "Oi! If we wanted to watch a stare down for the rest of this hour, we would have asked for it!"
That snapped Leo and Frank out of their, as Nico put it, stare down. They both looked in different directions. Annabeth figured that they had built up the tension they had finally broke down when they were teens on the original Argo II. She knew it couldn't be over Hazel again, but she wasn't completely sure what it was over. Travis, Nico, and Percy seemed to know though. The three of them were exchanging irritated looks. Looks that said get over it! Whether or not Leo and Frank caught these looks was a mystery.
There was silence in the room for a minute before a knock came from the door. All of them jumped. Percy checked his watch. It was twenty minutes before the hour. Percy said hurriedly, "We haven't even thought of coverup names other than Nico's!"
Leo's eyes widened and he said, "Shit. Let's go Peleus for you, Percy."
The men couldn't help it. They burst out laughing again. Percy actually rolled over so Annabeth had to stand up off the bed as he rolled off onto the floor. She was annoyed to say the least. It was a cover name. Why must they think every fake name is hilarious?!
Leo was just nodding and continued, "Yep. Peleus Costas. Nico is obviously Mario and let's go Calamia for his last name. Travis…. you'll have to change certain features. Can't do hair because Daniel would have seen that. Change maybe eyes and facial hair. Your name is Ray Craycroft. Frank, your grandmother called you Fai right? That's Chinese so keep that, but we can use Cong for your last name! I shall be Lucas Castro!"
Leo looked supremely pleased with himself. Travis went to change his facial hair in the bathroom and came out with a look of haven't shaved for a few days; still look awesome. His eyes were also a dark blue.
Annabeth asked, "All the surnames you came up with start with 'c' which isn't normal when there is five of you."
"Oh well." Percy answered for Leo. "We just won't introduce last names unless he asks. We don't have time to pick new ones. Wait! Didn't I tell Travis to tell Daniel his real name?"
"Yes." Travis answered, "But I never got a chance to. The only name he was told was Mario."
"Excellent."
When Annabeth turned to look at Percy she was stunned at the quick transformation. His features were strikingly Greek. He had a goatee that made him look slightly older, but gave him a almost playboy air. It made him look very similar to Robert Downey Jr. when he is playing Iron Man. The others' transformations weren't as noticeable, except Nico who also had a goatee. His made him look like a typical Italian man because it was just a tiny triangle shaped beard right beneath his bottom lip and a small handlebar mustache. Annabeth couldn't help laughing. All these disguises and names had happened in about two minutes.
"Impressive." Annabeth said. She truly was impressed. Percy grinned. When he did, Annabeth noticed that the slight crinkles by his eyes had become more numerous and defined with his transformation.
"Thanks." Percy said. "Now that's covered, you should get in the corner. Quickly! I'll be on the bed next to the wall so you can mutter advice in my ear. I'll relay it in some strange language."
Annabeth nodded and put on her Yankees cap. She leaned up and kissed Percy's cheek to spare him the embarrassment of kissing air. When she hit the bed in signal of her being in position, all the rest of the men looked at each other. Percy jumped on the bed as promised and sent a wink in her general direction. He sat leaning on the headboard.
The rest of the men seemed a bit apprehensive, but began trying to look dignified in various places. Leo and Nico sat on the edge of the second bed side by side. Frank seemed to be pondering whether he wanted to sit next to them, in the desk chair or in one of the two armchairs. He decided on the desk chair. Travis looked around and seemed to decide whether or not he wanted to open the door.
He was not given much choice when another insistent knock came. He walked warily to the door. He unlocked the two locks, arranged his face to one with mild interest and surprise, and swung open the door.
