"Mr Steadman."
"Oh just go away."
Rubbing my temples I tried to find some sort of peace in the quiet of my own mind but it wasn't working overly well.
"Mr Steadman, we need to ask you a few questions about the events of last night."
"I already told the doctor what happened."
One of the officers sat next to me on the hard plastic chairs in the room. It screeched as he dragged it across the room and I cast a glance towards Tim to ensure it hadn't woken him. It hadn't.
"We need to hear it from you for our own records."
I sighed in frustration.
"Tim said he was going to take a bath so I carried on with some work in my office, when I went to check on him he didn't respond and when I opened the door he was already under the water. I pulled him out and called the ambulance. That's it."
"Did he seem normal until that point, has anything happened recently that might have led to this?"
He looked at me with an earnest sympathy that I didn't deserve.
"I know this is difficult but the sooner we establish what happened the sooner we can get him the help he needs."
"Everything was fine," I replied.
They glanced at each other, the other officer now taking over.
"That should be everything we need for now but we may have more questions if the investigation continues. If you ask me it seems pretty cut and dry. Pardon the pun."
I glared at him and he seemed to recoil slightly.
"Well, we'll leave you to it then," he said with a nod towards Tim.
"Afternoon," he said briskly before exiting with his colleague close behind.
"Mmm."
Tim opened his eyes and looked straight at me, expressionless for a second and then his eyes widened in fear.
In the corner of my eye I saw his hand move slowly towards the alarm to call a nurse to the room. He saw me looking and stopped moving.
"Tim. Do you really think that's a good idea?"
"You're insane," he whispered.
"And you're insufferable," I laughed. "We're a good match."
"Stay away from me. I swear Ivo, I never want to see you again. I'm leaving you."
I smirked.
"Oh do stop making a fool of yourself Tim. We both know how this goes."
"I mean it!"
"Shhh, you don't want to have me thrown out now, do you?"
"I don't need you anymore, I have money. I'll find somewhere else."
"Of course you will sweetie, now that you're awake the nurse will want to know what you would like for dinner."
Tim gaped at me.
"Stop it, I want you to leave."
"Who else is there," I asked quietly and he faltered.
"What?"
"Hmm, good point, maybe that had too much of a double meaning where you are concerned."
I smiled and leaned towards him.
"Who else is there to take care of you?"
"I don't need anyone to take care of me."
"No? Last time I checked you were in a hospital."
He snarled at me.
"Because you tried to kill me!"
I leaned back in my chair and steepled my fingers under my chin.
"As they say, what goes around comes around."
Tim watched me, incredulous.
"You're crazy."
"You said already."
We looked at each other for a long time, one that would have been awkward to anyone else but Tim doesn't know much about social normality.
"Why?"
"Why what?"
He almost rolled his eyes but stopped himself.
"Why did you do it?"
I thought for a moment before answering him.
"Because I love you. I still do, but if I had to go on living with you then I would have started to hate you. When I look at you I can see that you wish you had picked my sister over me and if I can't have you, she can't either."
He seemed to nod in acknowledgement which momentarily confused me.
"You wish you had picked her?"
He looked at me with those eyes that I still couldn't resist.
"I don't know. I just wish I hadn't picked you."
