CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Magnolia spent the night in the hospital in recovery with Her mom and Quinn constantly by her side. Kurt and Santana went home to get clothes for the women and clothes for when Lia would be discharged.

Rachel and Quinn shared a cot that the very friendly nurse from earlier brought in. Quinn was wide-awake after the eventful previous day she endured. She had never felt so scared and so hopeless in her entire life.

Rachel started stirring awake, "Quinn?"

"Go back to sleep, sweetie," Quinn coaxed gently.

Rachel sat up a little bit, "I can't, your thoughts are too loud. What's going on?"

"I'm just thinking about yesterday. I wish I could've done more."

"Quinn I already told you, you did more than enough for baby girl and I am so grateful for you. Besides, I added you as an emergency contact last night, so nothing like that should ever happen again."

Quinn wanted to say exactly what was on her mind, but she decided she didn't want to have this conversation this early in the relationship.

"What? What is it?" Rachel said, looking at the expression on Quinn's face. The other woman looked like she was holding something back.

"Nothing."

"Quinn?"

"What role do you see me as in Lia's life?"

"Huh?"

"Am I-am I just her teacher? Am I like a parental figure? Am I just her mom's girlfriend? What am I?" Quinn rambled.

"I-I don't know, Quinn. I-I guess it depends on what Magnolia sees you as. I know I see you as a beautiful woman who I love."

"I know Rachel," Quinn said, a little upset Rachel was brushing it off, "but yesterday, when I was upset, you didn't even think to talk about us, like in the future being married and me having a bigger legal role in Lia's life. You went straight to an emergency contact? I mean, what if I want more?"

"Do you want more?"

"I don't know, Rach. I just-I shouldn't have said anything, so just drop it."

"Quinn, you are scared and still a little wound up from yesterday, so you're picking a fight, you get that, right?"

"Rachel, don't do that. Don't make it seem like every concern I have is the pettiest thing you've ever heard. It's demeaning."

"Quinn it's too early in the morning for this, we will talk about this when we get home. Our home. The home in which you moved into with me. I think that was a pretty big step, don't you?"

All Quinn could do was get up and go to the bathroom. She couldn't believe Rachel was acting this way and dismissing Quinn's concerns.

Rachel, on the other hand, was lying on the cot, mentally slapping herself for being so mean to Quinn. She couldn't help it though; what Quinn was implying was not something she's ever thought about. Did Quinn mean she wanted marriage, or that she wanted to adopt Lia, or both? Maybe she should've asked or given Quinn the chance to talk.

Quinn had been in the bathroom for about half an hour and Rachel started to get worried. Rachel climbed off the cot and lightly knocked on the door.

"Quinn?"

Quinn stayed quiet, pretending like she wasn't sitting on the bathroom floor.

"Quinn, open up. Please?" Rachel waited for a moment, then heard a click and opened the door.

"May I help you?"

Rachel sat in front of Quinn and grabbed her hands, "We talked about this. What happened to no walking away?"

"I'm sorry, you were just making me very angry."

"I know, I have that affect on people," Rachel giggled.

Quinn just smiled sadly at her girlfriend.

"What did you mean, by possibly want more? I just want to understand."

"I'm not really sure. I just know I wasn't relieved when you said you added me as an emergency contact."

"I see where you're coming from, but what do you want me to do? Are you just scared that something might happen again and an emergency contact won't be enough?"

Quinn just nodded her head.

"Come here," Rachel opened her arms and pulled Quinn closer, "If anything happens again, we will both be there and you will have the same privileges as I do."

"But, how do you know?"

"I just do."

Quinn relaxed in Rachel's arms and enjoyed being held by her girlfriend.

"Mommy? Quinn!" A voice yelled from behind the bathroom door.

"Oh my gosh!" Quinn and Rachel quickly walked out of the bathroom and were met with the worried face of Magnolia.

"I woke up and you guys weren't there," Lia said in a sniffling voice.

"We're sorry, baby. We just had to talk about some grown up things and didn't want to wake you," Rachel explained carefully.

"It's okay. Can I watch some toons, please?"

"Of course you can baby girl." Rachel turned to some cartons for her daughter and then pulled out her cellphone and turned to Quinn, "I gotta call the theater to tell them I'm not coming in today. I'll ask San to cover for me."

"You don't have to miss work, Rach. Mags is going to be discharged in a few hours and she and I will just chill."

"Oh Quinn I can't ask you to miss work too."

"That's the beauty of a TA, Marley can take over for the day. It's all good," Quinn said with a cheeky smile.

"I love you, so much," Rachel grabbed Quinn's face and gave her a sensual kiss.

"Ew, mommy!" Lia squealed with a giggle.

Four hours later…

"Quinn?" Lia asked with a chocolate ice cream mustache.

She and Quinn had been watching movies in their pajamas since Magnolia was released from the hospital earlier that day.

"Yes sweetie?"

"Do you have a mommy and a daddy? Or two daddies like mommy? Or two mommies like I will."

Quinn smiled at the last thing Lia said, and then realized how hard it was going to be to explain her family situation to the child.

"Well, yes I do have a mommy and a daddy, but I don't talk to them."

"That's horrible! Why don't you talk to them?"

"Well, my mommy and daddy weren't very nice, so when I was old enough to get away from the mean people, I did."

"Oh," Lia sat there thinking about something for a while, and then she moved over on the couch and gave Quinn hug. "It's okay, Quinn. Mommy and me are your family now."

It took everything in Quinn not to break down into tears in that moment.

Of course the ring of the doorbell ruined the lovely moment.

"Just a minute!" Quinn called out.

Quinn opened the door and there stood a bashful looking Marley holding a teddy bear.

"Hi, I'm sorry for just dropping by without calling or anything, I just wanted to bring this to Magnolia."

"Oh my goodness, come in. That is so sweet of you to do Marley, thank you." Quinn pulled Marley into a hug that lingered a little too long. Quinn released Marley with an awkward cough and backed up a respectable distance. "Mags, come here. You have a visitor!"

Tiny footsteps could be heard running.

"Hey! Take it easy." Quinn said and the footsteps could no longer be heard.

Lia came to the door and smiled her biggest when she saw her second favorite teacher holding a present.

"Is that for me?"

"It sure is. I know getting surgery was scary and sorry I didn't bring it sooner, but this is Mr. Bear and he'll make you feel all better."

"Thank you Marley!" Lia gave Marley a big hug and then gave Mr. Bear a squeeze of his own. "Hey! Wanna see my scar?"

Quinn laughed, "Ignore her, she asked three strangers on the street the same question."

"It's fine," Marley said with a laugh.

"Quinn, can Marley stay and watch movies with us?" Magnolia asked with her best pouty face.

"Well, I think you should ask Marley first."

Lia looked up at Marley expectedly.

Marley leaned down with her hands on her knees, so she could level with Magnolia, "I would love to watch movies with you and Quinn."

Quinn and Magnolia shared a smile and a high five and led their friend into the living room.

Leave ideas! I'm running out lol. What would you guys like to see?
