THE ADVENTURES OF MERLIN
Second Sight – Epilogue
8 ½ MONTHS LATER…
Had they known it would happen, they wouldn't have risked the trip into the woods for a picnic with the King and Queen…
The sun was high in the sky and it was such a lovely dayfor a ride – the breeze was refreshing and the sound of birdsong was calming to Kora as she rode side-saddle on her horse, to avoid unnecessary pressure on her swollen belly.
The King and his advisor rode ahead of the women, chatting amiably and laughing at an inaudible joke.
'How do you fare, Kora?' Guinevere asked softly, noting the splay of Kora's hand pressed gently against the bump of her stomach.
The young woman snapped out of her reverie and gave the Queen a small smile. 'I think, my Queen…that we may need to cut this trip short…' she murmured, rubbing her tummy subconsciously. 'When I woke this morning, I felt different. I was hoping I was imagining things – I didn't want to spoil our picnic – but I believe it is inevitable.'
Gwen's eyes widened and opened her mouth to call a halt on their small party, but Kora stopped her with a hand.
'Peace, Guinevere…It is nice to watch them. My water will remain intact for several minutes – let's not spoil the view.' She said, eyeing the sharp curves of her husband's cheeks as he turned to wink at her.
Kora gave him a little wave as she felt the child turn within her belly.
'I am concerned…it is not due for another couple of weeks…' Gwen said worriedly, her dark eyes flicking back towards the men, who were now engaged in a bout of 'horseplay'.
'She is just as impatient has her father. She is tired of sitting around doing nothing. It is time for her to see the world…'
The young woman shifted uncomfortably in the saddle, the feeling of wetness between her thighs growing as she moved.
She took a shuddering breath and nodded at the Queen, who was on the verge of calling out.
'Stop!' She cried and the men turned in their saddles, their confused glances making Kora giggle – until the first contraction hit her, causing her to cry out in pain.
'Kora?' Merlin called, his voice painted in panic as she doubled over, almost falling from the horse. He dismounted speedily and rushed over. 'Love? What is it?'
'The baby…she's coming.' She replied with a tight smile, allowing her husband to assist her own dismount.
'What, now?' The King exclaimed shrilly.
Kora rolled her eyes. 'Of course not, my lord – I'm just kiddi-AHHHHH,' her sarcastic retort was cut off by another cry of pain as Merlin held her against his chest, slowly lowering her to the ground.
'Maybe one of us should go back to get the Physician...I mean, who of us know how deliver a baby?' Arthur suggested, his face paling as Guinevere tore Kora's ruined dress from hem to waist.
'There's no time!' His wife cried as the King began to pace, averting his gaze from the woman writhing in pain on the forest floor.
Merlin rested a hand upon Kora's sweaty brow and began to stroke her dark hair. She smiled momentarily before her features where once again creased in agony.
'Alright sweetheart, hold my hand,' Merlin murmured with a grin, excitement bubbling in his chest as Kora's legs fell apart involuntarily.
She panted heavily and she let out a shrill scream as her head fell back to Merlin's shoulder. She could feel Gwen's warm hands massaging her thighs soothingly and she tried to focus on the movement, but the pain was nearly unbearable.
'Merlin...gods above it hurts!' She hissed, biting her lip as she peered into his smiling eyes.
'You'll be just fine love. You're amazing...it'll be over soon, I promise.' He assured, shifting his gaze to the Queen, who was smiling widely. 'I can see her head,' she said, patting Kora's knee.
'Is it over yet?' Arthur called from somewhere in the distance.
The young warlock rolled his eyes. 'You call me a girls petticoat? I'm sure it won't be long sire,' he replied with a derisive chuckle.
'Shut up Merlin. This is your fault, you do know that?'
He looked down to Kora, his eyes crinkling at the corners. 'I don't see exactly how this is my fault. Dunderhead,'
The comment earned him another smile, followed by another scream.
'Ok Kora, You can start pushing now,' Gwen instructed.
Breathing rapidly through puffed cheeks, she pushed with everything she had and within minutes the clearing was filled with the shrill cries of a newborn.
Guinevere swaddled the babe in her travelling cloak, tears in her eyes at the stunning little girl in her arms. A mop of messy ebony hair curled around pale skin and the ears that poked through where obviously inherited from her father.
'Congratulations, she's lovely,' the Queen whispered, handing the baby to Kora, who took her with a smile. She touched the chubby cheek lovingly with a finger and peered up to her husband, who had tears streaming down his cheeks.
'Look what we made, Merlin. She's perfect...' Kora said softly as the baby opened her eyes for the first time – azure eyes wide and flecked with the gold of magic.
Arthur approached slowly, hoping the messy bit was over.
'She has your ears, Merlin.' He commented with a smile as he crouched by the couple, cooing in a way none of them had ever seen before.
'Guinevere, I want one,' he said imperiously, almost pouting and earning laughter from the others.
'Well, you won't have to wait long my King,' Gwen replied with a grin, patting her stomach. Arthur grinned. 'We're having a baby? One of those?' He asked incredulously, jumping to his feet and enveloping his wife. Once they parted, they turned to the new parents, still marvelling over the child they had created.
'What will you name her?' Gwen asked as Merlin pressed his lips to Kora's brow.
'Freya. Her name is Freya.' Kora whispered, noting the way Merlin's body stiffened behind her.
'Really?' He asked, sniffling. 'You're sure?'
'Yes.'
Done. Finally finished. I honestly had problems with this chapter. It's a bit fluffy for my taste. But I think it needed a super happy ending. Now I need to write some whump. I have a toothache from all the sweetness.
Let me know what you think!
