I sat at the table while Mom set about with taking my cake out of the oven. It smelled sweet, almost making me forget my troubles. Mom set the cake in front of me, humming a little tune.
"I hope this didn't take too much time," I said.
"Not at all, Ciel!" She laughed. "I had fun while doing it! Those Moon Berries weren't so difficult to find, and just look at the cake they made!"
"It's beautiful," I agreed. I looked the freshly baked cake over; it took the color of the lilacs Mom liked to take home from the market, the same ones that would die a few days later because she could never properly take care of it. Even though she could barely tend to a flower, she took excellent care of me.
Maybe my parents should take lessons from her...
"Ciel..." Mey-Rin said suddenly, sliding the knife with ease through the cake. I pretended to look at it hungrily, though my heart began to race. Was this the moment she would tell me?
"Yes, mom?"
"You know how much I love you, right?"
"You tell me all the time," I laughed, sounding a bit more forced than I anticipated. "How would I not know?"
She laughed nervously as well, stacking the chunk of cake onto a plate. The knife clinked against the plate, making her jump. She giggled again. "Blast my nerves," she said.
"Is there something wrong, Mom?" I asked, not having to fake my worry. I desperately wanted to hear the truth from her lips, even though I already knew it. Maybe it was just because I trusted her more than I did Sebastian?
Mey-Rin bit her lip, setting the plate and knife down onto the table. In my lap underneath the table, my hands fumbled with a loose thread on my dress. My heart began to race even more so.
"Ciel, you know how you've always wondered about your real parents?" She began.
"Yes," I said, a bit too quickly if I do say so myself.
"Well, I'm afraid that I've been hiding the truth from you for a while now," she said. "But I only did it because I didn't want you to have to grow up knowing..."
"Knowing what?" I asked quietly, my voice quivering.
She looked at me, tears shining through her glasses. I felt some of mine rushing to the surface as well, stinging my eyes.
"You're parents gave you to me," she said quietly, reaching over to take my hand. I let her squeeze it tightly, even though I was beyond feeling anything at the moment. Hearing it from Sebastian was different than hearing it from my own caretaker. How I wished that this was all a bad dream!
"They did...?" I asked.
She nodded sadly. "You're mark... they called it an unholy mark," she sniffed, squeezing my hand again. "They didn't want you to taint their family name,"
"So they gave me away?" Hurt and anger filled my voice. I fought the urge to yank my hand away-Mey-Rin didn't have anything to do with this.
"Your father has you to me," she explained. "I'm so sorry, Ciel..."
"Don't be," I said, a little colder than I intended. "They didn't want me to ruin it for them. Whoever they are, I hope they're happy,"
"There's one more thing I must tell you, Ciel,"
"And that is?"
"Your parents are the King and Queen," she said softly.
I nodded solemnly. Underneath my cold expression, I was furious. So Sebastian was telling the truth...Oh the irony.
"So that makes me the " dead" princess?" I spat with a harsh laugh. I felt the tears pricking at my eyes, the full effect of my past looming over me. I suddenly felt heavy. "They lies to the entire kingdom...just so they wouldn't know about me,"
"I'm so sorry you had to find out this way, Ciel," she said, close to tears. I felt bad for her then. She was the one forced to take care of me, the princess who was promised to a demon.
"I'm sorry that you had to raise me," I mumbled. "It must've been terrible to know that you were caring for a child promises to a demon,"
"That's not true, Ciel," she said sternly. "I loved raising you. Your father gave you to me because I couldn't have children of my own. You're a blessing to me,"
I stared at her for a moment. A blessing? How could I be a blessing?
Nonetheless, I kept the questions in my head, leaning over to embrace Mey-Rin. She held me tightly, stroking my head. For a moment, it felt like old times...
I remembered how I used to be so afraid of thunder storms. Mom would sit with me in my bed, holding me like this. Being in her arms made me feel safe, like nothing in the world could hurt me.
Gently, I pushed her away. "Thank you for telling me, Mom," I said, forcing a sad smile on my face. "I think I'm going to sit in my room for a little bit. Just to clear my thoughts,"
She smiled with understanding. "Of course, Ciel. I'll be preparing supper while you do,"
I nodded, turning and walking back towards my room. My stomach churned slightly, making me want to throw up. Now I knew the truth-My parents gave me up just to save their reputation. I bet they didn't even give a second thought about me.
I shut the door behind me, making a beeline to the window. The castle was in the distance, shining merrily above all the rest of the town. I glared at it. My parents were sitting there, probably glad that they had figured out a way to get rid of me. The entire kingdom would be mourning for me today, the Dead Princess of Lord and Lady Phantomhive.
I growled, slamming my fist on the edge of the window. The pain momentarily cleared my mind.
"So Mey-Rin has told you the truth,"
I scoffed. "Yes, she did,"
"Have you figured out your greatest desire, yet?" Sebastian asked, standing beside me. I looked up at him for a moment, then went back to glaring at the castle.
"I haven't been able to," I muttered.
"The answer is right in front of you, Ciel," he said, gesturing towards the castle.
"My parents," I growled. My anger began to grow again. I could feel it in my chest.
He nodded, smirking. "The same people who gave birth to you, cast you out as if you were simply a mangy dog,"
I ruffled. "Just to save their reputation,"
"Exactly. What do you want to do about it?"
I balled up my fist, tensing my muscles. "I...I want..."
"You want what?"
I looked up at him. "I want revenge," I said briskly. "I want them to pay for their sin. Sending their own flesh and blood to live with some servant! How dare they?!"
Sebastian turned to me. "My Lady, what is your wish?"
"Sebastian Michaelis, I wish to rid of my parents and take the throne for myself," I said. "I will be the new ruler,"
Sebastian went down on one knee, bowing his head and placing a hand on his heart.
"Yes, my Lady,"
