"Edward thank you for coming. I know you are a busy man but I had to speak with you."
"It was no problem Mr. Horn. What was so urgent that you had to speak to me about?"
"Your grades have slipped a bit and don't seem to be getting any better." Mr. Horn said as he showed me some of my recent papers. "I think that it is time for you to seriously think about taking a sabbatical from school and come back sometime next year when you are able to do your work and get the grades you need to continue on with med school."
"I'm not sure I understand you. I know my grades have fallen a little but they are still passing grades." I replied. "And don't forget my grandfather died and I was very close to him. I've known other classmates that where given a break on their grades because they too lost a family member."
"Edward I wasn't implying that…"
"I don't care Mr. Horn, but if I find out that you are pressuring me just because of my title I will report you." I replied. "If you have nothing else to say to me I will be leaving."
Mr. Horn didn't say a thing he was smart and kept his mouth shut and pointed toward the door. While he was right to be worried about my grades but he went about it the wrong way. I was fine with the pressure my classes and being a Duke brought me. It was when my mother started to meddle in my privet life (and constantly telling me to get married) that I would start to panic.
"Edward you're late." Alice said. "Dinner was ready an hour ago."
"Alice I'm not in the mood right now."
"But…"
"I know Alice but I have more pressing matters than getting to dinner on time." I snapped.
I hadn't meant to snap at Alice but her chipper attitude got to me some times. Right now wasn't a moment I could deal with it right now.
"Okay."
I walked away from Alice after that and hid myself in my den. I drank half a bottle of scotch my grandfather had left in the bottom draw of the desk. I took one final pull from the bottle, replaced the cap and put it back into the drawer.
I wrote a quick not to Alice and slipped it under her door as I made my way to my bedroom. I was asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow.

I knew something had held my cousin up after his lunch with my aunt and uncle. He had never gotten home that late before. I wanted to ask him what it was. He never got home this late, even if he did have to stop off for books. I watched as he walked away clinching his fist as he went. I knew by that action alone something had made him angry and it was best to leave him alone.
I cleaned up the remains of dinner and made sure to leave a plate warmed and covered in the oven for Edward to eat later if he became hungry.
Once I was in my room getting ready from bed I could hear Edward stumble out of the den and into his own bedroom. He paused outside my door for a few seconds but had quickly moved on. My guess would be that he wanted to say sorry but thought I was asleep or changed his mind.
