A/N: Awww yeah, triple update! (That's assuming if you read all my other fics. LOL.) Anyway, I wasn't planning on updating this story (mainly 'cause I haven't finished the next chapter yet *cough*), but I just WANTED to update. And HOO-ZAH, I pulled out this file that I had written of Verena's origin. I've always gotten LOTS of questions on how she came to be, and well, this is it!
I think it's because it's been raining non-stop where I live, so I've been in a really good mood. Hah. Rain makes me want to write and update, so maybe you guys should start doing rain dances. ;) LOL.
I'm gonna start doing review answers at the bottom, now, because the intros are just too damn long. xD So enjoy~
BLACKHAWK BASE
SEPTEMBER 21, 2007
14:25 UTC+11
I jumped up from shock as I heard an alarm go off, following by the sounds of running footsteps. I felt the ground rumble below me, and got up quickly. I opened the door to my room and peeked outside the hall, where multiple Blackhawks were running around, armed and ready.
The halls were flashing red as the alarm beeped loudly. I heard the familiar pounding of footsteps. I moved out of the way as my mother came running into my room, her uniform on.
"Verena," she said, breathing slightly heavily. "I can't talk for long. I have to get out there soon."
"Mom, what's up?" I asked. Her usually smooth hair was slightly disarrayed and her forehead had a light sheen of sweat, which shone against the ceiling light.
"We're being under attack, and it's pretty bad," Mom replied. "Five of our jets have been shot down, and if it weren't for Ritter flying beside me, I'd be dead."
She bent down and held onto my shoulders. "Verena, you have orders to evacuate the base. Fly east. The Blackhawks and I have decided it's too dangerous to keep you here at base. Use the underground pathway to head to the submarine pens. Natalie's there." She kissed my forehead before giving me something. A mask? "To make sure an enemy doesn't see you. We'll find you once this is all over."
She stood back up and then gave me one last look before leaving my room, most likely to head to the hangars to fly off. I heard an explosion and winced. That sound was awfully close.
I looked in the mirror and put on the mask. It hid my eyes from view, and I looked at it for a second more before I ran off, heading towards the submarine pens.
I ran through the hallways, which were empty. This was really a full attack if all of them were gone. I ran down the stairs, where I saw Natalie standing, waiting beside a medium-sized jet.
"V!" Natalie exclaimed, seeing me. She looked at me with her visible eye and I stopped in front of her. "This is your jet. Your codename's Black Falcon. All tracers have been disconnected, but we'll find you. Don't worry about it."
"Natalie…" I started, but she cut me off.
"The others will create a diversion for you to fly away. Go anywhere. Just fly. There's emergency money in there, along with extra sets of clothes, a bed, and a restroom with a shower. Fly near water if you wanna use the restroom or shower. We've also got a few guns on there for you." Natalie explained. "Now get moving, kid."
I pursed my lips together tightly, before nodding my head. I climbed into the jet, and shut the doors behind me. Seeing the insides of the plane made me think of the simulations I would play in the hangar. I switched on all of the appropriate settings and felt the engine roar to life.
A few feet away, the roof moved down, creating a ramp. I felt the platform turn under the jet and I gave a status report. "This is Black Falcon. All engines are set and ready to go at anytime."
"Take off in two minutes, Black Falcon. We're clearing the area," Janos's voice appeared. I patiently waited, flying closer to the ramp, waiting for Janos to give the okay. I looked out the window and saw Natalie smile before giving a thumbs up. A while passed before Janos's voice was heard again. "Now! Take off, Black Falcon!"
I turned the engines all onto full power and took off, flying straight out of the hangar without a problem. It was a good thing I was allowed to play the simulations. I soared into the air and fly past Mom's plane. I quickly noticed the other jets were in full battle mode, as blasts after blasts were being fired
"Ascend twenty feet, Black Falcon!" Mom's voice appeared in my headset.
I did as I was told and pulled the wheel up, making me ascend around twenty feet from the battle. I looked at my current location and did as Mom told me, fly east.
I heard a light beeping and looked down at my controls. On the small screen I saw what looked like two missiles heading towards me. I dodged out of the way, pulling the jet with me. I spun in the air, still keeping my course. I heard a small explosion and looked at the camera again, seeing the jet that was after me explode into pieces.
"Get going, I'll cover for you," Mom's voice appeared. "Now."
I nodded, even though she couldn't see, and continue to fly east. I soared through the skies in silence, looking for a place where I could land. Obviously, I couldn't get an apartment at my age, so I had to find somewhere where people don't usually travel so I could live there until the Blackhawks got me.
GOTHAM CITY
SEPTEMBER 21, 2007
10:08 EDT
I soon found myself on the east coast, hours later, after flying through pretty much almost every state in the United States of America. I found myself a good location at the outskirts of a city in New Jersey. It was an area surrounded by trees with a river flowing through. The closest civilization there was this large mansion, which would be a few miles away.
I landed my aircraft a couple feet away from the riverbank, and sighed, leaning back in my seat. I pulled off my mask and stared up at the plain ceiling. What do I do now?
My stomach growled, and I realized what my answer. I looked around the jet, which wasn't much. It looked just like how a jet was supposed to be, if you took away the door that separated the controls from whatever was behind there. Speaking of which, what was behind there?
I got unbuckled myself and got out of the seat. Walking around my chair, I headed to the door, placing my hand on the doorknob. I pulled it open blinked. It looked like a really, really, small room.
There was a small little bed towards the left of the room. Against the wall was a dresser with a mini-fridge next to it. On top of the mini-fridge was a microwave. I looked at the door that led to the right and walked around the cramped area to where the door was. I opened it, and it revealed the small bathroom. There was a small shower, toilet, and sink.
I exited the bathroom and headed over to the dresser. I opened it and it revealed two of the Blackhawk uniforms I wore underneath my current clothes, along with a couple of casual clothes. There was a small duffel bag in the bottom and I bent down to open it.
The first thing I noticed was the amount of twenties in the bag. Holy crap, I've never seen that much cash in my life. There were probably around a thousand of these bills. I then spotted the note written in my mom's familiar handwriting.
"Verena," I began reading out loud. "There's five thousand dollars in this bag, which should be enough for your toiletries, food, and whatever else you want. There are also a few handguns and extra bullets (rubber and real ones). There's also a handheld that connects with the controls of the jet. It's solar-powered. I don't know how long it'll take us to find you, but we will. Don't worry about it. Take care of yourself. Love, Mom."
My stomach growled again and I frowned. I went over to the control room and pulled out a map of where I was. I was on the outskirts of Gotham City, and the city was around fifteen miles from here. Well, I ran a mile in four minutes, so if I walked, it'd be around eight or nine minutes. I guessed it'd take around two and a half hours to get into the city. Well, I'll be developing a lot of leg muscle after this.
Just in case, I grabbed two guns and some rubber bullets, stuffing one behind my pants and one on the inside of the left flap of my jacket. Just in case, I placed my mask inside the right of my jacket. I stuffed the extra bullets in the outside jacket pocket I was wearing. I grabbed a six or seven twenty dollar bills, not really sure how much I'd need, stuffing them into the left front pant pocket.
I pulled out the little handheld controller, noticing it was really similar to an iTouch, without the button. I touched the screen and it lit up. I blinked, looking at the screen. I accessed a map to Gotham City, and then put it in my other pant pocket.
I noticed something hanging at the top of the controls, and pulled on it. It was a remote of some sort, and it came with a note.
"This is for when you leave the jet. It turns into stealth mode, blending in with its surroundings," I read. "Huh." I stepped out of the jet and walked a few feet away from it before turning around and pressing the button. My mouth dropped when it disappeared right before my eyes. I pressed the button again, and it reappeared. I pressed the button yet another time, and was about to press it again, until my stomach groaned in protest.
"Alright, alright," I sighed. "I'll find us something. Just hang on." I put the button away, turning around and leaving the jet.
I let out a yawn as I walked down the empty street. Traveling through time zones made you really trippy on the time. I think it's supposed to be around eleven at night back at the base, now that I think about it.
I slowed my pace as I started thinking about the base. I wonder if they were still fighting. The base has been attacked before, but never to the extent where I had to evacuate. I wonder how long it'd take for them to find me.
My thoughts were disturbed as I heard a car heading down the road, before ultimately stopping beside me. It was a rather fancy car, and the windows were tinted black. I slowly reached for my gun in the inside of my jacket, before the window in the back rolled down, revealing a boy around my age with black hair and blue eyes.
"Hey," he greeted me. "Do you need a ride?"
I slowly placed my hand back at my side and shook my head. "No, thanks. I'm just heading to the center of Gotham."
"Really?" he asked, his eyes widening slightly. "That's like, twenty minutes from here, by car. You're walking there?"
I looked at him strangely. "Well, I'm not gonna fly there," I replied sarcastically.
He laughed, his bright blue eyes closing in amusement. "Oh man, that's rich. Pop in. I'll give you a ride."
I quirked an eyebrow at him. "I don't think I should be accepting rides from strangers."
"I'm Dick," he grinned. "This here's Alfred." He patted the driver's seat.
I thought about it for a second. Well, if anything happened, I could easily escape. Weaklings aren't tolerated on Blackhawk Base. I could flip men twice my height and four times my weight easily. A little boy and an old man should be fine.
Cautiously, I reached forward and opened the door, and entered the car. I sat as far away from the guy as possible and I buckled myself in.
"So, you got a name?" the guy beside me asked.
"People call me Ren or Rena," I answered, looking at him from the corner of my eyes to the man driving the car. I met his eyes in the rearview mirror, and the man looked away.
"Short for anything? Dick's actually short for Richard."
"Verena."
"Not really talkative, are ya?"
I turned to look at him to see him looking at me. "I am," I replied. "I just don't know you, so I don't think it's smart to tell you a lot about me. Didn't your parents warn you that talking to strangers is bad?"
A look flashed through his eyes before he looked down at his lap. "My parents are gone…"
I felt a pang of guilt when I saw that. "Oh…" I started quietly, not really knowing what to say. "Sorry…"
"S'okay," Dick answered. Then he looked back up at me. "I have Bruce and Alfred now."
"Bruce?" I questioned, cocking my head to the side.
"Yep." Dick nodded his head. "He paid for my parents' funeral and then adopted me last year. I have a different last name than Bruce. It's Grayson."
I gave him a small smile. "I'm Verena Blake."
"So, I've never seen you around before. Did you just move here?" Dick prodded, looking at me with curiosity.
"Ah, yeah," I answered. "It's only temporary though."
"That's too bad," Dick commented. "I'm the only kid around where I live within a ten mile radius. It'd be nice to have another kid around here too. Speaking of which, how old are you?"
"I just turned nine a few days ago," I answered.
"Hah, I'm older than you! I'm ten." Dick laughed. "When's your birthday? Mine's December first!"
"September eighteenth," I replied.
"Master Dick, we've arrived in Central Gotham. Where would you like to go first?" Alfred asked. Dick looked at me in question.
"Oh, you could just head to your destination and I'll get off there. I just need to find a supermarket to buy some food and toiletries," I replied. It was nice to know that they didn't kidnap me.
"Why don't we head to the supermarket first then, Alfred? Don't you have to get some things for Bruce?" Dick questioned. Alfred and him exchanged a look through the rearview mirror and the old man nodded, turning around a corner.
I looked out the window as Alfred drove, and then saw him come to a stop at a fairly large supermarket. Alfred exited the car first and went to Dick's door, opening it for him. I watched as he slid out of the car and the two males waited for me to exit.
Realization popped into my head and I slid out of the car, past Dick's seat and my feet hit the pavement. "Thank you," I said to Alfred, before grabbing a basket and heading inside the supermarket.
My stomach growled as I walked through the produce isle, and I hushed it in my mind. Jeez, how embarrassing. I grabbed a few fresh fruits and went over to look at the frozen foods. I grabbed some frozen pizzas, fine with living off of those for a couple of days. Next, I went to the toiletries, and bought an extra roll of toilet paper and some shampoo and soap. All in all, I wanted to get out of here as soon as I could so I could go eat.
I mentally counted how many items I had in my basket before heading to the express lane. I was just one item shy from having fifteen, the limit. It's a good thing fruits were supposed to be placed in bags.
"That'll be $18.84," the cashier, a medium-height teenaged male said in a bored tone. I pulled out a twenty and gave it to him. He gave me my change, and since I didn't want to deal with coins, I just placed them in the little donation box before collecting my items.
I left the supermarket, and found myself looking for Alfred and Dick's car. I found it still where it was still parked and figured the two males must be in there. I took the receipt I had and pulled out a pen, writing a quick thank you and placed it on the windshield, before walking away in search of a restaurant.
GOTHAM CITY
SEPTEMBER 21, 2007
22:12 EDT
I gave a yawn and stretched as I walked around Gotham City. Well, I certainly was getting the exercise at least. I had to go back to my jet twice between my trips. I spent most of the day buying some stuff I'd probably need and getting to know the city. I was currently inside a mall, and I yawned again.
Something caught my eye and I turned towards it, my mouth still wide open. The heck? Were those… branches? I felt the ground shake and people started screaming and running, heading towards the exit. What was going on?
I pulled out my phone and turned on the camera, zooming in on the sight. There was a woman, dressed in dark green… Was it appropriate to be dressed like that in the middle of the fall? She also had red hair, and her skin was pale, but had a green-ish tint to it. From what it looked like, she was controlling the plants.
I pulled out my PDA and hacked into police files. I quickly found a match. Poison Ivy, huh? She then started sinking down before ultimately disappearing, along with all of her tree branches.
What was that all about?
I turned around and continued reading Poison Ivy's file. She's able to control plants, which was pretty cool, if you asked me. She'd make a pretty cool superhero. Call it stupidity or curiosity, but I wanted to find out more for myself. I headed to the bathroom and slipped on my mask. I peeled off my regular clothing to reveal my Blackhawk uniform.
It was a shame, but I threw away the clothes I was currently wearing in the nearest trash bin. I did do some shopping, so it was alright. Besides, carrying around clothes would be a hindrance where I was heading.
I exited the vacant mall, and pulled out my PDA, finding out where the nearest greenhouse was. It was probably a stupid idea, but the Blackhawks always said the obvious choices were always the best choices.
It took me thirteen minutes to get there, which wasn't that bad, considering I had to run three miles. Thank you for training me, Blackhawks.
I slammed open the doors to the greenhouse.
Well, what a sight. Maybe this was a bad idea.
Batman and Robin, Gotham's heroes that I've heard so much about, were on the ground, unconscious. Poison Ivy was sitting on tree branches and Commissioner Gordon was hung upside down above some bubbling green liquid.
I let out a sigh. Well, no turning back now.
"And who might you be, little girl?" Poison Ivy inquired, looking down at me.
"Just call me Black Falcon," I replied. "You're going down, Poison Ivy."
"Oh, I don't think so," the woman laughed. "Devour her!" she ordered, and a Venus Fly Trap came, well, flying, towards me.
My eyes widened a fraction and I jumped out of the way, landing on it before jumping away again as it bit its own stem off. I landed on one of the bars supporting the greenhouse. Some roots threw bunches of rubble at me and I had to do a serious of flips and jumps to dodge them all. Yeah. This was a bad idea. How am I gonna explain this to Mom?
Batman and Robin slowly got up from where they laid, and Ivy said something to them. Suddenly, they turned towards me and swung themselves up towards me.
"What?!" I exclaimed, jumping out of their way as they kicked me. I jumped down from the beam, deciding it was too narrow to fight in. I landed in a small waterway, and watched as the Dynamic Duo jump and land in front of me.
"So… they're under some mind control, right?" I muttered to myself. "Guess I need to beat it out of them."
I dodged an attack from Robin and Batman simultaneously. I roughly shoved Robin down onto the ground and kicked Batman's chin, making him fall back. I backed away quickly, just in case it didn't work.
Robin let out a groan as he slowly got up, but Batman was silent.
"Um… are you two okay?" I questioned wearily.
"Well, excluding the fact that my face feels like it just got mashed into an iron wall, yeah," Robin said.
I let out a sigh of relief. "That means they're back."
"Back just in time too," Poison Ivy said as a shadow loomed over us all. "To see the Commissioner become plant food."
I pulled out two guns and cocked them both.
"Little girls shouldn't be playing with guns," Poison Ivy tsked. "What are they teaching children these days?"
I jumped out of the way as a root crept up to my feet, but then let out a small gasp as another caught me in mid-air. It hung me upside down and I groaned. "Why did I have to be so curious? Mom's gonna kill me if she finds out about this."
I then noticed something. I was in perfect range of Commissioner Gordon. I held out my two pistols and aimed before firing. They hit its target, rupturing the case that held him and the weird liquid spilled out of the bulb.
"Curiosity killed the cat, little girl," Poison Ivy spoke.
"Well, it's a good thing I'm a bird, now aren't I?" I retorted. Poison Ivy growled and she was about to attack me, but Batman caught her attention. He threw something at her feet, which exploded, making her fall off her branch. Robin landed beside him, and he peered down at me.
I gave a nervous laugh. "Hey," I waved.
"Need some help there?" he asked.
"It'd be appreciated," I replied. Robin nodded and threw something, which cut the root that was holding me upside down. I did a flip and landed safely on the ground. Ah, it was good to be right-side up.
Batman and Robin started to engage in battle with Poison Ivy, and I found myself on Attack of the Killer Plants. Mini-trees latched on to me and I struggled to break myself free of them.
One latched onto my face, but I could see with one eye that more were heading towards me. I shot them all away from me before placing a gun at the one on my face. I shot it point-blank and it bounced away just as something rolled to my feet.
It was a capsule of some sort. I blinked and measured it with my barrel. Huh. Perfect fit. I reloaded one of my guns with the capsule and the other with more rubber bullets. Some more killer plants headed towards me and I shot at them with the gun filled with rubber bullets while retreating.
I found myself peering over a bunch of bushes and saw Batman and Robin pinned to a tree by branches. Batman caught my eye and I looked over at Poison Ivy. I aimed my gun with the capsule and shot.
"Hah!" she cried, hitting the bullet away with a branch. "You missed!" The capsule exploded in the water, and ice began to encase the plant she was standing on. "What?! No!"
"One thing," I said, standing up from where I was hiding. "I don't miss." The ice fully encased Ivy and I sighed. I was going to walk over to where Batman and Robin were to help them, but I saw them breaking out of the branches' grips.
"Robin, go help the Commissioner down," Batman ordered.
"On it," Robin said before jumping off. I stood in silence for a while until Robin came back a few seconds later with Commissioner Gordon.
"Thanks for all your help, Batman," the Commissioner said, looking up at the Batman.
"Don't thank me," Batman shook his head. "Thank her." He looked at me.
Commissioner Gordon walked over to where I was and said, "Thank you…" he trailed off, wanting to know my name.
I gave a smile. "Just call me Black Falcon."
"Thank you, Black Falcon," Commissioner Gordon nodded his head.
"No prob, Commissioner," I replied.
Commissioner Gordon looked at the three of us and said, "I'll be calling in for backup now. Thanks again." He nodded once more before walking away.
I let out a yawn and pulled out my phone to check the time. Oh jeez, it was eleven here, but that meant I had gotten sleep in almost thirty hours. "Well, looks like it's my bedtime," I said to the two heroes in front of me. "Nice working with you two."
I gave a small wave and turned around, only to yawn again. The adrenaline was wearing off, fatigue taking its place. I should run back. It'll halve my time to around fifteen minutes. Yeah. I'll do that.
I ran out of the greenhouse, out into the darkening streets of Gotham. I ran through multiple alleyways, intent on getting back to the jet faster. Thankfully, no one got in my way back.
It took me around seventeen minutes to get back to the jet. I stumbled into the driver's room, and the jet's doors closed behind me. I managed to kick off my shoes and peel off my mask before heading into the bedroom, where I collapsed on the bed, falling into a deep sleep.
