The light burns.
This was Draco Malfoy's first thought as he recovered himself from an uncomfortable night's sleep. Where in Merlin's name was he anyway? He thought as he opened his eyes to a pink ceiling, squinting as the sun's early rays glinted off the window a little to the left. A pink ceiling? Surely this isn't the manor. Lucius would roll in mud first before painting his ceiling pink, he thought jokingly. Draco was still trying his best to think back to what happened yesterday when the scent of coffee and breakfast entered his nose, filling his empty stomach reminding him quite uncomfortably that he hadn't eaten the night before. He stood up from the couch and followed the enticing aroma to the small tidy kitchen. He froze at the doorway, watching a brown haired girl sway her hips to the soft music of a radio as she bounced from station to station setting up breakfast. The girl was even singing in a soft voice as the song reached its chorus, causing the small blonde haired toddler to giggle and to clap his hands, bouncing with excitement in his high chair.
Small blonde haired toddler… Scorpius! Oh thank heavens his son is here and safe. This probably meant that the brown haired girl shaking her delicious arse must be Granger. Draco did a double take on the girl. Was he really in Granger's house watching her dance around in the kitchen? What is this? Some kind of dream perhaps?
With almost a blinding flash, his tired brain suddenly replayed all the happenings of yesterday in a blur making his head hurt even more. That's right; he had a run in with a Neanderthal last night before coming to Granger's house. I hope he's off in hell right now. He thought offhandedly, feeling his rage coming back to him once again. But his train of thought was immediately diverted as he watched Granger sway her hips again to the music's beat; Earning a sound of approval from him. Merlin's beard that was quite sexy. Hermione spun upon hearing him, startled upon the interruption.
"Oh! Malfoy, I didn't quite notice you were already up." She said trying to hide her pinking cheeks.
"Father! My Healer Mione's making us breakfast, see!" Oh I see son, I see.
"Uhh well thank you Granger for extending your hospitality up to until this morning, this is very nice of you." Hermione nodded, going back to frying bacon and eggs for their breakfast, trying desperately to stop her cheeks from pinking any further. She jumped a little in surprise as she heard a huge thud coming from the table, spinning around to investigate the cause of the noise. she saw Draco slumped on one of her dining chairs looking as if he forcefully heaved himself to a sitting position. His face plainly etched with pain. She sprung into action immediately, approaching him carefully and checking his wounds. "I'm fine." Draco wheezed.
"You could've just asked for help you know."
"Yeah." Draco breathed out with a grimace on his face. "But that would've meant more debts to you. And I just can't afford any more of that, love."
Hermione blinked. "Oh, it's nothing, Malfoy really."
"Draco."
"Huh? She answered back."
"My name is Draco, and I really do prefer if you call me that instead of Malfoy. That name brings back a lot of ill memories now doesn't it." Draco smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
"Oh umm well, Draco. I would really prefer it if you would call me Hermione. All this Granger this, Granger that nonsense is really getting on my nerve, kind of reminds me of when we were back in school." Draco smiled his full megawatt dazzling smile. Hermione could've sworn she swooned a tinsy bit.
"Ok then, Hermione. If you would be kind enough to let go of my hand now, that would be nice. You're squeezing my bruise and it is really starting to hurt." Hermione jumped back and dropped his hand almost as if it burned her. She didn't even realize they were that close or that she was holding his hand the whole time they were talking. Draco laughed, delighting in the way her cheeks are getting redder and redder every time they would have any form of contact. Hermione went back to cooking trying not to show the small smile forming in her lips. Damn it! Why can't I control myself when he's around? Hermione thought bitterly, shaking her head.
"Where were you last night Father? You didn't tuck me in." Scorpius whispered with a pout directed at Draco.
"I'm sorry little love, Father just ran through a bit of trouble is all."
"Were you hurt Father?" Scorpius' eyes widened searching his father's form for any wound or trace of blood. Thank goodness Hermione already cleaned him up.
"Nope, just a tiny scratch but that's all. We Malfoys don't get hurt." Draco replied puffing his chest out a bit as if to display that he was in a perfect condition of health. Scorpius giggled and seemed smug as if showing how proud he was to be a Malfoy. Hermione just rolled her eyes. If Scorpius only saw his beloved father last night, She snorted, earning her a glare from Malfoy.
"I had lots of fun with Healer Mione! We played hide and seek and we read books and we baked cookies and decorated them! Oh father I wish you were here to see it." Draco smiled, Scorpius' excitement was fueling him even after a night of pain.
"Next time love, We'll do it all together how's that?"
"I would love that father! Wouldn't you love that too Healer Mione?" Scorpius said looking at Hermione with big pleading eyes, coaxing her to say yes. She smiled despite herself.
"Of course I would love to spend more time with you."
"And this time father would be here too so he doesn't miss any fun stuff anymore!" Hermione's smile faltered a bit. Great, just what she needed; Quality time with Malfoys. She's not really sure she can take more of the electric current thing between her and Malf – Draco. It's starting to get really tiring, the whole blushing and hiding her smile thing. She sighed lost in her thoughts as an owl gently landed on her shoulder with its leg outstretched, ready for her to take the package. Hermione gingerly opened the package and saw the Daily Prophet's huge headline about Draco's run in with the photographer last night. Her eyes devoured every word as she learned for herself what really happened the night before. Upon reaching the end of the article she finally lifted her wide eyes to Draco's steely gaze. Draco just stared at her; calculating her reaction as he continued to chew his bacon.
"Scorpius, honey why don't you fetch the coloring book we worked on last night so daddy can take a look." Scorpius' face lit up. "Oh! That would be a great idea Healer Mione. Father would love that!" Without a second thought, Scorpius ran as fast as his chubby legs can take him up the stairs into Hermione's room.
"Am I in trouble Healer Mione?" Draco asked with a smirk.
"This isn't funny Malfoy! You can't just make a scene like this in Diagon Alley and not expect everyone to notice. Have you thought of what Scorpius' reaction might be if he ever finds out that his dad beats crazy people in the streets just because he couldn't keep his temper in check?" Draco's smirk faltered.
"Look, I understand why you did what you did. I've been around boys all throughout my Hogwarts days and I know that men can get out of control sometimes when it comes to things like this. But maybe you can exercise a little bit more patience next time?"
"You weren't there Hermione." He whispered.
"My son is the only thing I have left. I can't let them take him too." Hermione's eyes softened.
"That won't happen Draco, I promise." Without even thinking about it, she took Draco's hand and gave it a tiny squeeze to assure him that she was there for him and for Scorpius. Slowly, their hands intertwined, grasping for each other as comfort flowed through them, fueling their bodies.
"I saw it Healer Mione! Here it is." Hermione quickly tried to snatch her hand away from Draco's large ones, but Draco was having none of it.
"Why don't you give it here Scor so I can see how much of an artist you really are." Draco addressed Scorpius.
Scorpius took his time pointing out the different shades of colors he used for each drawing as he explained how his Healer Mione helped him through each one. Once again, Hermione tried to snatch her hand away from Draco's, not wanting Scorpius to see or worse to ask why she was holding his father's hand. But Draco's grip didn't even falter. He even tightened his hold, earning him a raised eyebrow from Hermione. All Draco did was offer her a small smile. A little, not quite there smile. But a smile none the less. And as much as Hermione doesn't want to admit it, she was sporting a little smile of her own.
