A/N: I'm so sorry about the long delays. I've had quite a few things going on, and had lost my muses for this story, but I think I've got this back and will hopefully have it finished soon! See the first chapter for the disclaimer. I hope you guys enjoy this one, and please review. :)

Chapter 34

Frank looked up as Garrett walked through the door. "Your son's case is officially closed," he said.

"I'm well aware of that," Frank replied.

"Well, the press is wondering when Officer Reagan will be restored to duty."

Frank groaned softly.

"I understand," Garrett started. "Trust me, Jamie's wellbeing is paramount in my mind. I know that's a decision best made by his doctors. But we have the press conference later for the Gomez case, and the media wants to know why it seems like you're holding Jamie back."

"I'm not holding him back," Frank grunted. "It's his doctors that are saying he's not ready."

"Both of them, or is one saying it over the other?"

Frank just looked at Garrett.

"I'm asking out of concern for Jamie, not as a sound bite for the press," Garrett clarified.

"His physical is in two days," Frank told him. "That will hopefully clear him for duty. The department psychiatrist will see him after he's been physically cleared to determine what will be best for him from there."

Garrett nodded. "Hopefully he'll be cleared."

Frank nodded.

"This gets Mr. Gomez off of the streets, but, just as important, it also gets several kilos of cocaine off the streets," Frank announced. "Questions?"

"Commissioner?" "Commissioner?" "Commissioner?"

"Ryan."

"Commissioner, has your son Jameson returned to duty following his ordeal?" Ryan asked.

"I'm not sure I understand what relevance that has to Mr. Gomez," Frank replied. He didn't even have to look to know Garrett was annoyed with the answer.

"Many people would like to know what's going on with him."

"Officer Reagan is still recovering from the injuries inflicted upon him during the attack," Garrett jumped in, cutting Frank off before he snapped at Ryan. "When we have an update on that front, we will announce it."

"And with Officer Reagan's blessing," Frank added.

"Why are you holding him back from returning to duty?" Mike asked.

Frank furrowed his brow in annoyance. "No one is holding anyone back."

"As we've already stated, Officer Reagan is still recovering," Garrett stated, also annoyed.

"Which makes your question pointless, Mike," Frank concluded.

Again, Frank didn't have to look at Garrett to know how he felt about that comment, too.

"They hit you pretty hard, huh?" Jamie asked as Frank and Garrett walked into Frank's office. Baker glanced briefly at Frank and Garrett before walking out of the room.

"To be expected," Frank replied.

"I should be going," Garrett said.

Neither Reagan man said anything as Garrett followed Baker out.

Frank sat down in the chair, and Jamie sank down into the couch. "What brings you by, son?" he asked.

"Nice to come up to the 14th floor every once in a while without being in trouble," Jamie replied.

Frank looked at his youngest.

"I, uh, had my physical today," Jamie conceded.

"I thought that wasn't for another two days," Frank replied.

Jamie shrugged. "I didn't want to wait anymore."

"And?"

Jamie handed him the report. "Physically cleared for duty."

Frank nodded. "Good."

"The department psychiatrist is gonna talk to my psychiatrist, and then I go in tomorrow," Jamie continued. "After that…"

"You'll be riding a desk," Frank finished.

Jamie nodded. "Until everyone says otherwise."

"You ready for that?"

Jamie inhaled as he considered it. "Yeah, I think so," he replied. "I'm getting sick of the lack of good TV during the day."

Frank smiled.

Jamie chuckled slightly.

"How about everything else?" Frank asked.

Jamie shrugged. "Still having some trouble sleeping," he admitted. "Still having some nightmares. But it's getting easier each day."

Frank nodded.

"Danny's actually been pretty helpful for that."

Frank nodded again. "Your brother worries," he said.

"Yeah, I know," Jamie breathed. "Him and Linda. Erin and Nicki have been over for dinner almost every night since I got home."

Frank smiled. "Your choice, or theirs?"

"Do I ever get much of a choice with Erin?" Jamie countered.

Frank chuckled softly.

Jamie smiled. "Speaking of which, I should get home," he said. "They'll be over tonight, and I'm supposed to cook."

"I'll let Linda know to expect them at the hospital," Frank joked lightly.

Jamie laughed. "Thanks, Dad."

Frank smiled as the two of them stood up.

"I'll see you Sunday," Jamie told his father.

"See you Sunday," Frank replied, watching his youngest walk out of his office and noticing just how much lighter Jamie's demeanor had become.

A sure sign that things would be okay soon.
