Ch 70
Ellen opened her eyes, it was morning, the first look at the watch reminded her of the previous evening. She wasn't used to Carlisle´s leaving her without letting her know after their lovemaking. She became sad, he never had done that before. He always waited patiently until she woke up and then kissed her and informed about his plans. And it was still early. Few minutes after 6 a.m., enough time to have shower, wake up Patricia and drive her to the class.
She came in her daughter's room and hugged the sleeping princess. "Wake up, sweetheart,we will be going to class today."
Patricia opened her eyes with smile and kissed her mom, "Sure, can´t wait, our teacher promised us to have fun today."
Ellen helped her to dress and asked, "What will you have for breakfast? Eggs? Toast?"
Patty giggled. "I would like to have bread with strawberry jam."
"As you wish, babygirl."
They finished getting dressed and Patty followed Ellen downstairs. They could see Esme serving them breakfast and Patty had bread with strawberry jam. Patty exclaimed, "Wow, that´s exactly what I wanted. Thanks aunt Esme!"
The named one smiled and caressed her head. "You're welcome."
Then she looked at Ellen who was trying to hide her disappointment in her face.
She wanted to prepare breakfast for her daughter today. Esme was watching her with the naive look, "Is everything alright, Ellen?"
Ellen picked up a cup of coffee from the coffee maker and said, "Of course it is…"
And left the kitchen to pick up her school stuff. She was lucky that she left because she missed the satisfied expression on Esme´s face. Ellen was returning to the kitchen to make Patty hurry when she saw Edward walking down the steps.
He greeted Ellen nicely with a hug and kiss on her forehead. " Good morning El, how are you doing?"
Ellen smiled naturally. "Hi, Edward. Thanks for asking. I am fine, a little tired but fine."
She wanted to add something when Patricia hurried to hug Edward too before leaving. She jumped in his arms and told him about her dreams. Ellen checked her watch again. "Baby, we need to leave right now."
Edward accompanied them to the car and helped Patty in the car seat. Before he closed the door at Ellen´s side he told her, "Don't let her hurt you, El. You're much better than that. You should tell Carlisle…."
Ellen caressed his face, " It´s so nice of you Edward,but…."
She remained silent and turned the car on. She knew that Edward could hear the rest of the sentence running in her mind. And he didn't like what he heard.
Ellen was sitting in her class reviewing the tests she handed out today as a revision of the past chapter in English grammar and she needed to grade them. She still had about two hours before Patty finishes too. She tried to concentrate on it, but her mind was still wandering to Carlisle. He hadn't called since the morning. He didn't even left her a note. He just sneaked out of the room while she was sleeping. It was so weird to accept that. She wanted to call him but her pride didn´t allow it. Instead she tried to keep her mind busy with the tests.
Suddenly the phone began beeping. She thought that it was her Carlisle but the display shower the name 'dad'. She smiled and greeted him, "Dad? I am so happy to hear from you."
He greeted her too and added, "Well, I had to call, I have been waiting for weeks to hear from you."
Ellen shrugged. "Lifes getting complicated dad, I didn't have time to deal with everything."
He asked, "And would you tell me if something went wrong with your fiancee?" Ellen shivered with the word fiancee….
She had no idea why but somehow she didn't feel joy and happiness when her dad said the word. She could hear the silence in the phone and replied, "What? Yes, sure,sure….."
He replied back," Ellen, there is something I would like to talk to you about…..Well, better said, not I….but Lucy …she feels bad of what happened, she blames herself for what happened."
Ellen wondered, " What? Why her? She didn't cause it. It could happen to anyone. Can I talk to her?"
Lucy suddenly spoke, " Ellen? It´s me….I am here….." Ellen began," Lucy, you really don't have to blame yourself, it´s not your fault, definitely not. I haven't even thought about in that way, it was my stupid ex´s revenge. It had nothing to do with you, you….you couldn't have known how cruel he can , nobody could have."
Lucy smiled, " Thanks, Ellen, for not being angry.I was so worried, I know that for the whole time you were not very fond of me living with your father and now after everything I was worried you despised me. I don't want to fight with you, Ellen. I believe we both want the same thing, the happiness of our family. .If I may call it in that way."
Ellen smiled," Sure, I agree, we should try to have good relationship." They talked for almost the whole hour and Ellen asked," Lucy, I apologise, I need to pick up you mind if I call you later?"
Lucy nodded," Sure, call me whenever you want, I will be glad to hear from you. Greet your nice boyfriend and our little sweetheart from us both."
"Sure, I will, both of them."
With those words they hang up.
Ellen was walking on the way to Patty´s class thinking about the call. Lucy sounded really so sincere, she had no reason not to believe her words. She really must have felt terrible because of everything. Now, finally, she will be calmer. It was nice to hear from her dad and they even both had a very nice chat. She felt that the long term boundaries could be finally broken and they could really become a functioning family. Her dad was happy with her even after all those years and she could try to get to know Lucy better too. She might not be that bad. Maybe she could be the help in the hard times she is going through right now.
Ellen walked with Patty back to their car when they saw Edward and Bella coming closer to them. Ellen grinned," What happened?" Bella replied, " Ellie, we could have girls night today. Edward promised to take Patty to see the new Smurfs. What do you think?"
Ellen watched them both with doubts but then waved the hand," Sure, let´s go." They kissed Patty and Bella joined Ellen in her car.
Bella accompanied Ellen to the shopping centre where they headed to the cosmetics salon. Ellen chuckled," I thought this would be Alice´s idea of spending the afternoon."
" You're right, Ellen, but I believe that after so many years after her influence, I gave up, I began enjoying it recently."
Ellen grinned and let the lady to do her pedicure and agreed with manicure. Bella wished to have a new color of hair. When they left the place, they headed to the coffee shop. Ellen ordered one latte and they talked. Bella suddenly looked at her and whispered," I hope you don't mind that I took you out."
Ellen shook the head, " No, actually not, I had a great time."
"Great! Edward told me what you had to face in the morning. Alice advised me to spend time with you."
Ellen wondered," That´s so nice of you and I am really thankful for that, but you don't have to fight for me.I believe I am able to solve my own troubles."
Bella caressed her arm, " Ellen, we don't want to intrude,I mean if you feel something like that…..we just want to help, with Alice´s visions …she is incredibly worried about you."
Ellen nodded, " Well, Esme is back. I just have some kind of feeling that she wants Carlisle back. I don't know how I know, but I feel it….."
Bella remained silent. She knew that Ellen was right according to what Alice and Edward claimed. Instead she replied," If you feel that, you should fight for it, tell Carlisle about it. I have known her for many years and I must say that Carlisle was never so happy as in the previous year, he feels so good with you."
Ellen nodded," That´s so nice to hear. I will see what I can do." Bella supported her," You need to fight, you're much better than her." Ellen nodded, but in her head she was doubting that. How can she fight a hundred years old vampire who knows how to deal with men? But she nodded to everything that Bella advised her.
They were driving home later and Bella asked, "Carlisle has been working late tonight, would you like to surprise him in the office?" Ellen wondered," How do you know that?"
Bella grinned, "A.L.I.C.E"
Ellen laughed."Why does it still surprise me?"
Bella meanwhile stopped at his practice and Ellen said, "Will you take this sweetheart home?"
Bella just checked her mobile phone and smiled, " Definitely, Edward just texted that Patty ate a pancake he prepared and fell asleep in five minutes." Ellen smiled and got out the car. In few seconds, Bella changed seats and drove away.
Ellen could see the light in his office and rang the bell. In a second he was opening the door.
" Ellie? What are you doing here?" She entered in and looked around. He began taking her coat off. " I was out with Bella. Edward took Patty too see the Smurfs so…."
He kissed her forehead, " It´s so nice that you stopped by, I was just busy with too much paperwork." She sat down on the chair and silently whispered," I was sad when I didn´t find you next to me in my bed."
He sat back behind his desk and began looking to the papers again." Sorry, honey, I was busy, needed to hunt and then left here. I have been here for more than 14 hours and I'm still not finished."
Ellen was watching him and felt as if she wasn't his fiancee but his patient. He was talking calmly but she didn't feel the usual comfort. What is going on between them?
Carlisle was sitting on the chair trying to finish all the remaining tasks. Ellen seemed to be disappointed. He couldn't tell Ellen the truth. In the morning when he returned back home, he found Esme standing in the kitchen feeling completely down. He asked about what happened and she told him about her incredible loneliness. She claimed she felt that the kids didn't like her anymore. He tried to comfort her but she hugged him and kissed his cheek. He felt so weird that he had to leave immediately for work. He didn't even remember to leave Ellen a note. He was so shocked, he rather locked himself up in his practice and did all the bothering paperwork. If only Ellen knew….
