BRUCE WAYNE
A rhythmic sound echoed through the Batcave as I watched Verena work on disassembling before reassembling multiple weapons. She was blindfolded by a strip of black cloth, which took away her vision, but that didn't deter her confidence in the slightest.
I had long noticed a pattern in Verena's work: click, click, tap, clang. Click, click, tap, clang. She'd unhook and release, take it apart, and then put it on the tabletop in front of her.
I stopped the timer when Verena slammed the last gun on the table. "Done!" she declared.
"48.12 seconds," I read. That's faster than how I take ten guns apart and put them back together.
Verena took off her blindfold and beamed at me. "I managed to scrap a second off my average time per gun," she told me, even though I already knew that.
I nodded my head, the corner of my lips curling ever the slightest. People might not think training kids are any fun, but to me, training Dick and Verena has actually become a pass time for me. Actually, it's more like training with them rather than training them.
In about a year or two, they'll be my equals. Hell, I believe they already are, regardless of what others think.
Robin and Black Falcon were never my sidekicks. They were always my partners.
"Good job," I nodded my approval. If I was Ollie, I'd probably be singing praises, but I wasn't, so I just stuck to those two words.
Despite my limited word count, Verena's smile only grew brighter, and her eyes sparkled with a self-confidence that I knew she deserved to have.
I was a bit wary about sending Dick and Verena off into upper grades because of their young ages, because I was well-aware of how self-conscious teenagers were, and how they'd look for easy targets to make them feel better. Dick and Verena would be easy targets because they were young.
But of course, they continue to impress me. Dick is the same age as freshmen, so there wasn't much to worry about. Verena, though, was the same age as seventh graders, but she held herself to a full confidence that just made others respect her.
As I looked at the little girl in front of me, I wondered just when had Verena matured into a young woman mentally. She knew just how she was, and regardless of the flaws in her past and even in her blood, to me, she was perfect.
She had an adorable innocence with the impending beauty of a woman beneath her young face. If it weren't for Dick, I'd probably be beating boys with a stick… or a bat… hell, let's just bring out the Batsuit.
She had one of the most brilliant minds on this planet. She could keep an intellectual conversation, something my business associates always found confounding, since their daughters simply gushed about materialistic items. They didn't even know the half of her capacity.
She had a tough personality that didn't take anyone's nonsense, which to me, is an appealing trait. She didn't deal with Wally's and Dick's antics, and she didn't care for Roy's and Conner's attitudes. She kept them in their place, and didn't budge in the slightest.
And best of all, she cared with all her being, and more.
Without a second thought, she would take down anyone that harmed those close to her. Clark had even told me she stood up to him just for Conner. A human, four-seven, seventy-nine pound little girl against a Kryptonian, six-three, two-hundred and thirty-five pound man.
I snorted in amusement, which made Verena arch a brow curiously at me.
"Penny for your thoughts?" she inquired.
I shook my head, "I'm just thinking how you're just a perfect girl."
That smile made breaking my normal exterior all worth it.
A/N: One thing I always worry about: Verena isn't a Mary Sue, is she? :c I mean, wisdom, looks, and strength are what are in all of Batman's kids. I try to make her have flaws, which I hope will appear more in Black Falcon: A New Chapter. Anyway guys, review!
