GOTHAM CITY
OCTOBER 21, 2010

JADE NGUYEN
I watched quietly from the shadows, far away on the rooftops as she exited a store. She was sipping a drink she had in her hand and walked casually through the dark streets of Gotham.
She didn't care that it was past sundown in Gotham, one of the most dangerous cities in America, and I supposed with her background, it made sense.
She was wearing dark sunglasses, despite it being dark, but I was thinking it was because she knew I was there.
I had seen her, as Black Falcon, take down a couple thugs an hour ago. She then disappeared behind a corner before reappearing as a girl wearing dark sunglasses, a simple pair of jeans, and a white blouse with a dark jacket thrown over her shoulders.
I waited to see if she would go anywhere, but she seemed to be just taking me on a wild goose chase, because she was literally doing nothing this past hour except walk around.
She was heading for the pier, and I was wondering why. I followed behind her closely, but not close enough so that she'd notice me… hopefully.
"Is there a reason you've been following me for the past hour?" the wind carried her words. She had spoken quietly enough so that one wouldn't be able to hear unless they were really paying attention.
Her tone wasn't accusatory, just a plain question that seemed more like a statement. Unlike my little sister, who let everyone hear how she felt, Black Falcon hid what her thoughts were.
I jumped down from the rooftop and stepped into the light. She still didn't bother to turn to look at me, but I had a feeling if I took a step out of place, she'd attack. These Bats were always the trickiest. It's a lot more fun messing with Red Arrow.
Speaking of Red Arrow…
I just know there's something between Red Arrow and Black Falcon. But Red Arrow had to be like what, eighteen? Black Falcon didn't even look like she was in her teens…
Just what about her made her so special?
"You better not be planning on doing anything here," Black Falcon said casually. "Batman won't be happy."
"Relax," I shrugged. "I'm not planning anything…" Yet, I added secretly in my head.
"Don't even think about it," she whirled around. I didn't even have to see her eyes to know she was glaring at me. How cute. The little kitten has claws… Or is the little bat has fangs?
"What makes you so special?" I inquired, looking at her. I took a step forward, but when she tensed, ready to pounce, I took a step back. Gotham was her territory, even if I grew up here. Plus, I wasn't looking for a fight.
What made her just so special to Red Arrow?
"What are you talking about?" she demanded. No… demanded was too strong of a word. It was more like forcefully inquired.
How cute. She might've been a know-it-all most of the time, but she knew very little of actual, everyday things.
Maybe this was why?
I hate to admit it, but she's like a breath of fresh air.
In this life we live, it's always filled with hate and violence. Trust me, I know. I grew up in it.
But with Black Falcon around, I felt… free. Her presence, imposing and intimidating as it was, relaxed me. Yeah, a little girl intimidates me, but I've seen what she's done to grown men.
Despite all that, though, she had a positive atmosphere around her. She can act all dreary and dark all she wants, but to me, her presence alone just gave that feeling that I could do and be anything I want to be. Not what my father wants me to be.
There was a pause and then she held her hand to her ear. "I'll be right there," she said to whoever it was. She took a glance at me, scanning me up and down before taking off.
By the time I turned to see where she was, she was gone.
Even though I knew I had talked to her, it still felt as though I was talking to nothing other than the blackness of the night.
