Sasuke walked along the road, the tension and silence behind him starting to get on his nerves. He wished they would just have a screaming match, a makeout session, hell, even have sex so long as they got it out of their system and would get rid of the tension. His nerves were already so fried that he jumped every time one of them sighed or every time the wind blew.
At long last, they reached the Northern hideout but something was wrong.
"No guards," Sasuke noted.
"That's not good," Karin stated just as a man with a prisoner's outfit, a bladed fin on his forearms, dark brown skin, and something growing out of his shirt that looked like a mosquito's butt crashed down in front of them.
"It would seem the prisoners have taken control," Sasuke noted.
"Y-you're Sasuke Uchiha!" the prisoner stated.
Sasuke stared at him blankly and Suigetsu peaked over his shoulder.
"Why's he look like a giant bug?" Suigetsu questioned.
"He's in the second stage of the Curse Mark," Karin stated.
Sasuke drew his chokuto and dashed past the prisoner, slashing him as he went and left him unconscious but alive.
"You're too soft," Suigetsu stated. "It's understandable to kill these ones."
"Don't hit any vital points," Sasuke ordered. "Karin, is he with the welcoming committee?"
"No," Karin said shaking her head. "He's in his cell inside."
Sasuke nodded and drew his chokuto again as Suigetsu drew his Executioner's Blade and attached the rest of the handle before wading into the mutated inmates, slashing them right and left without killing anyone. Sasuke appeared in the middle of a group then at the doorway and all of the inmates in the group then in a trail to the doorway collapsed. Sasuke walked inside and finished all of the inmates inside before Suigetsu and Karin joined him.
"Keep up," Sasuke growled.
They walked through the hideout silently before coming to a fork in the road.
"Which way Karin?" Sasuke questioned.
"That way," Karin stated pointing left.
Suigetsu took the lead, hand on his sword and didn't notice Karin leading Sasuke down a side passage silently.
"Hey Sasuke, do you mutate like that when you use the Curse Mark?" Suigetsu asked after a time. "Sasuke?"
He turned around and his hand fell to his side. He clenched his fist and shook slightly.
"Karin," he growled.
He walked back through the maze of hallways until he reached the area where the injured inmates lay.
"Damn," Suigetsu sighed. "Guess I should have taken that right after all."
"You're all going to be killed by Jugo," one of the conscious inmates stated.
"If not for Sasuke, I'd kill you for insulting us," Suigetsu stated.
"Sasuke can't even kill him," the inmate smirked. "Jugo is on a whole other level."
Suigetsu growled and reached for his blade but froze as an image flashed through his mind. then he sighed and lowered his hand.
"Your lucky day," Suigetsu muttered just as a massive crash rang through the base.
Suigetsu sprinted toward the sound, soon finding Karin standing in a cloud of dust where the ceiling had collapsed.
"Sasuke!" Karin called up through the hole.
"Don't worry you bitch!" Suigetsu spat running past her. "I'll save your precious Sasuke!"
Suigetsu landed in the hallway and sprinted around the nearest corner just in time to block a punch from Jugo that would have hit Sasuke's head.
"Well well," Suigetsu grinned as Karin arrived. "Jugo. You're using a different ability than when we fought before. I don't like that."
"Suigetsu," Jugo sneered. "I remember you."
"We're not here to fight," Sasuke stated. "Let me speak with him."
"Nothing you say will make any difference," Suigetsu stated. "He has only ever understood violence."
Jugo held up his mutated left arm and an axe blade grew out of it. Then, the both of them charged and slashed at each other. Their blades clashed several times before Suigetsu moved past Jugo then spun around swinging at Jugo as Jugo dropped to the ground.
"Both of you knock it off!" Sasuke snapped.
They both stood, moving to kill each other, but before they could, Sasuke appeared between them, a large white snake extended from each sleeve, wrapping themselves around Jugo and Suigetsu and holding them motionless.
"Do you want me to kill you both?" Sasuke demanded.
The snakes retracted as Jugo's Curse Mark receded and Suigetsu took an involuntary step back. Then he looked over at Karin's love-struck expression and his mood darkened.
"If you have Jugo under control, I'll wait outside," Suigetsu growled turning and walking down the hall away from them.
"What did you do now Karin?" Sasuke sighed.
"I...didn't do anything," Karin stated looking ashamed nonetheless.
At the same moment, Jugo sprinted back into his cell and slammed the door.
"Hurry up and lock me in!" Jugo screamed.
"Karin, go apologize to Suigetsu," Sasuke ordered.
Karin sighed but nodded and left. After a few minutes, she reached a hole in the wall where Suigetsu had cut his way out, probably annoyed with not being able to find the exit. As she stepped into the hole, she saw Suigetsu laying on top of one of the rock pillars around the hideout with his sword sticking up from his chest.
Suigetsu! Karin thought jumping out and sprinting up the pillar to him then stopping when she saw that the section of his body under the sword was water.
"What now?" Suigetsu spat. "Come to tell me I'm nothing but a hindrance and shout leave again?"
He rolled onto his side away from her, his torso turning to water to move around the sword blade as he did.
"Or did you just come to beat me up like you've been resisting the urge to ever since we picked you up?" Suigetsu continued. "Either way, I'm not in the mood for it so if you don't mind, take a hike."
"I'm sorry," Karin sighed. "I din't mean to make you mad."
"You're not forgiven," Suigetsu spat standing but still facing away from her while wrenching his sword out of the pillar. "Your very presence seems to infuriate me now. And quite obviously you can't stand the sight of me. You're probably only here because Sasuke told you to apologize right?"
"That's not..."Karin trailed off and gave Suigetsu exactly the answer he expected.
"That's what I thought," Suigetsu growled. "Just leave me alone."
"Suigetsu, I'm sorry," Karin pleaded.
"No you're not!" Suigetsu raged wheeling around and instantly scaring her, her having never seen him mad before. You're not sorry at all! You're only here because your precious Sasuke told you to be!"
"That's not-"
"I can see the desperation and obsession written all over your face when you look at him Karin!" Suigetsu spat. "I've got a newsflash for you! You have NO CHANCE WITH HIM! ! ! HE DOESN'T EVEN CARE ABOUT YOU AS A FRIEND! ! ! HE-"
He stopped mid sentence when her hand collided with his face turning his head into water. It reformed after a moment and Karin took a step back staring between her hand and the look of pure rage on her face.
"Oh no," Karin breathed. "Oh Suigetsu! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to! I swear!"
"If you don't get the fuck away from me right now, I'm going to shove my sword down your throat and SPIN IT! ! !" Suigetsu raged, face turning beat red as Karin fled from him and back to the hideout.
Suigetsu himself jumped off the pillar and drew his sword, walking into a large flat area that had stone pillars thinner than the one he had left spread through it and began to slash the pillars first to make them drop then as they fell to work off his anger. When Sasuke found him ten minutes later, Suigetsu had reduced the pillars to sand and was still furious.
"It doesn't work," Sasuke stated walking toward him. "Destroying targets, I mean. It doesn't relieve anger. Stress sure, but not anger. And certainly not pain."
"How the fuck would you know?" Suigetsu demanded.
"Because I have spent my entire life walking in my older brother's shadow," Sasuke stated. "I watched my friend have his eyes ripped out of his skull before he was even dead. And I tried to kill my best friend. I know anger and I know pain. And destroying a bunch of stone pillars won't help you move on and certainly won't dull the pain."
"Then how do you do it?" Suigetsu demanded.
"I strive to be better than my brother," Sasuke stated. "I strive to get revenge for my friend, which is why I recruited all of you. And I strive to protect the friends I have left."
"Then what should I do?" Suigetsu demanded. "I don't even know why I'm so angry except for the fact that Karin doesn't even seem to remember the fact that we were friends once."
"Is that not enough?" Sasuke questioned. "Is she only a friend to you? Or is the pain and anger more from the fact that she is trying to win me over more than that she ignores you?"
"Don't play councilor with me!" Suigetsu snapped. "I'm not in love with Karin!"
"Fine," Sasuke sighed. "Regardless, if you want to at least dull the pain and anger a bit, focus on her happiness. Focus on keeping her happy, more than trying to make her remember. Eventually, it will help, if not completely erase the pain."
Suigetsu glared at him for a moment before nodding. Then, the two of them turned and walked back to the others with Sasuke.
