Chapter 125: Anywhere

Their waiter, a young, fairly attractive male came to the booth,"Hello, I am Matthew and I will be your server today. What can I get for you to drink?" he asked, pen and note pad in hand.

"Oh..." Kagome hadn't thought about a drink, her mind was still whirling at Sesshoumaru's attempt to make a joke. "Coffee for me, I guess. Sesshoumaru would you like anything?"

"No."

"So, just a coffee for you then miss? Would you like any cream or sugar?" He stared at her.

Kagome shifted in her seat, "Um, no thank you, black coffee is good. We are ready to order as well."

"Absolutely. What can I get for you this evening?"

"I would like the three pancake stack."

"Would you like any sides with that?"

"No, I think they will fill me up just fine."

The young man chuckled, "They are rather large. Would you like to try out any of our homemade flavored syrups? We have Strawberry, Apricot or Blueberry, or perhaps topped with some fresh strawberries and whipped cream?" The waiter licked his lips when he mentioned whipped cream, Kagome noticed.

Kagome looked away from him and began playing with the ends of her hair. Looking back at his sea green eyes, "No thank you, just butter and maple syrup is fine." She smiled sweetly.

"Of course. Will that be all?" He flashed her a boyish grin.

"For me, yes. Sesshoumaru would like a steak, please." Kagome gestured across the table.

"And how would you like that cooked, sir?" He asked. It did not go unnoticed that his tone differed a fair amount from when he had been talking to her.

Sesshoumaru just kept looking at her, not even acknowledging the gentleman.

"Um... the rarer the better. Sorry, he isn't well versed in English." Kagome spoke up when it was clear Sesshoumaru had no intentions on answering the kid. Her fingers still fidgeting with her hair.

"I will see what I can do for you, miss."

"Thank you very much. If possible, just show the steak the grill... you know, to scare it. That should be good." She gave a big smile.

The waiter laughed, "Scare it. Nice one. I will be back with your coffee momentarily." He walked away, looking back over his shoulder and smiled.

Kagome cleared her throat, "He seems nice enough." Dropping her hands into her lap finally.

"He is a child." Sesshoumaru's smooth voice cut in.

"Yes, he is a child. At least he is polite." Kagome shrugged nonchalantly.

"No, he is sexually attracted to you."

"What!?" Kagome gasped out. "How can you even say that? How would you even KNOW that?"

"His scent."

Kagome's face grew hot. "Oh kami's... and now I am sure he thinks I was flirting with him." She lowered her forehead to the table, hiding her face, again, from Sesshoumaru's view.

"Were you not?"

Kagome's head snapped back up, "Of course not! He can't be older than... 20 at most! I might look like I am 16... but remember I am not! I am not that desperate, Sesshoumaru. At least give me a little credit here. Besides, he is not my type. I prefer men, not boys."

"Indeed."

Kagome glared at him. "What exactly do you mean 'indeed'? Indeed what?"

Sesshoumaru just stared at her, saying nothing.

"You think I was flirting, don't you?" Kagome asked.

Again, silence.

Kagome sighed. "Great... I must have been, subconsciously. Ugh!" She buried her face in her hands. "I promise you, I wasn't doing it intentionally."

"This one does not care who you court."

"Sesshoumaru... I didn't..." Kagome cut off her sentence as the waiter came back and placed her coffee on the table in front of her. Kagome slumped back into the booth seat like a child who had been scolded.

"Is everything okay here, miss?" Matthew asked, his voice laced with concern.

"Of course, everything is fine." She gave a halfhearted smile.

"Wonderful." He said, his tone off put. "I asked the cooks, and they said they would make your boyfriends steak as rare as possible for you."

Kagome bolted upright, waving her hands back and forth in front of her, "Oh, no, no, no ,no, no... we are not together like that... never, ever... no, we are just... friends."

"Great." Matthew winked at her before walking away.

Kagome's jaw dropped. "I shouldn't open my big mouth anymore. Every time I do I just get myself into trouble."

"This Sesshoumaru is displeasing as a mate?"

Kagome choked. "What?!"

Sesshoumaru just stared at her.

"You... can't seriously... be asking me that. You hate humans!" Kagome stuttered quietly, the shock was unimaginable. ~Is Sesshoumaru seriously asking me if he is worthy of being a mate? I must be asleep and having some horribly embarrassing nightmare here.~ "See, this is exactly what I mean. I interject when someone thinks we are a couple because I know your hatred of nearly every being on the planet and your clear dislike of me, and you think it somehow point to you being unfit as a mate." Kagome threw her hands in the air.

Sesshoumaru smirked.

"Oh...my... kami's... you are joking! Seriously?! Tonight, of all nights, you decide to relax a little and you are having fun at my expense! You have no idea how badly I want to hit you right now!" Kagome was caught between anger and hilarity.

"Try." Sesshoumaru smirked again.

"No thank you, I very much like my head attached to my body! You nearly gave me a heart attack. I thought you were serious!"

"I was."

"You weren't serious. So stop." Kagome laughed and hid her face a moment. "You know what... as payback for you trying to shock me to death, the next time someone assumes we are together, I fully intend to tell them yes! I intend to act the part too, I was pretty good at acting in high school."

Sesshoumaru growled at her. "You will die painfully."

Kagome waved it off, "I do not think you'll hurt me. On a brighter note, our food is coming. I think I liked you better when you were humorless!"

Sesshoumaru said nothing.

The waiter placed the steak in front of Sesshoumaru and placed three huge pancakes in front of Kagome, along with butter and syrup. Matthew placed his hand on the table, "Anything else you need miss?"

"No thank you, I think we are good."

"Let me refill your coffee for you." Matthew grabbed her cup and walked off. In the cups place was a folded piece of paper.

Kagome cautiously picked it up and unfolded it. Ten numbers were written on the paper with the words 'Call me if you are interested, Matthew' underneath. Kagome quickly folded the paper and stuffed it in her jacket pocket. ~Why did Sesshoumaru have to be right... again.~ Kagome wanted to leave. Now. She couldn't face this embarrassment. She wasn't this kind of girl.

"Sesshoumaru, can we leave? Please?"

Sesshoumaru's eyes narrowed.

"You were right, okay. He is interest and I can't face him now. We can go anywhere... anywhere but here. I will even stop at the market and buy you new steak. I am so sorry..." Kagome pulled two twenties out of her purse and dropped them on the table. It was more than enough to cover her six dollar pancakes and his ten dollar steak, along with a generous tip. Too bad for Matthew, it wasn't the tip he expected, her. Kagome quickly stood, threw her jacket on and picked up her purse, making a hasty exit. She didn't even bother to check if Sesshoumaru was following.
