It was a rare occasion when he woke up to silence, and not JJ begging for attention from him or Casey. It was an even rarer occasion when he woke up to have Casey still fast asleep in his arms, and not tending to JJ so he didn't wake his father. He loved his son, but times where he could just watch his wife sleep were what he appreciated most. He could quietly observe her and not have to answer questions about why he was watching her. Casey was naturally curious, and he knew that she didn't mind that he would just quietly admire her, but he hated answering her questions about that topic.
Tonight was one of those rare nights where JJ slept through the night, so Casey looked more well rested. She had a small smile on her face and he could've sworn that she mumbled his name once or twice. He liked that.
"I love you, kitten." He whispered before kissing her forehead just as JJ's cries came through the baby monitor.
"I'll get him." Casey mumbled and he shook his head, pushing her down as she tried to sit up.
"I've got him, Case. You get a few more minutes of sleep, okay?"
"Are you sure?"
"You act like I'm incapable of being alone with him."
"I didn't mean it like that, I just-"
"I know. You sleep, I'll call if I need some kind of assistance." He assured and she nodded, accepting his kiss before snuggling more into the duvet and leaving him to go care for their son. Parker, being the loyal dog he was, tiredly trotted behind him to the nursery and sat down beside the rocking chair, knowing that after the diaper change, feeding, and burping, the blonde would be rocking in the chair while holding the babe. It was the ritual when Dean was the first one up in the morning. Casey preferred going downstairs after the burping and starting up breakfast while JJ was distracted by the mobile hovering over the playpen in the living room. Dean liked putting him to sleep upstairs in the crib before he started breakfast, because if he were to wake up, Casey was right down the hall and he didn't have to stop cooking to go tend to him.
Once JJ was satisfied, Dean rocked him to sleep, but held onto him a bit longer. He had to savor each moment with his son, since he was going back on tour in only three weeks. Two months wasn't enough, it would never be enough, but he was grateful that he even got this long to be with him without having to work. When he had to leave, he'd be upset about it and counting the days until he came home again.
"You okay?" Casey asked from the doorway and he looked up at her with a smile.
"I don't want to leave, Casey."
"Three weeks. Let's not worry about you leaving until two weeks from now, okay? I don't even want to think about you leaving."
"Alright. Are we taking him downstairs?"
"Yeah. Do you want me to cook, or-"
"I got it." He assured as he stood and handed her JJ, who had woken back up.
"Good morning, mister." She greeted with a smile before kissing his head and checking his diaper. "Somebody pooped."
"It wasn't me." Dean joked and she rolled her eyes playfully.
"I would hope not." Casey teased as she laid the baby down on the changing table and unbuttoned his footsie pajamas. Dean wrapped his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her head as she slowly opened the diaper. Casey ducked quickly, avoiding the little stream of pee that Dean was too slow to dodge. She managed to fold the diaper over again, blocking the stream while Dean stood there in shock, his neck and bare chest wet with his son's urine.
"You've got to be kidding me." He muttered as Casey giggled. "I'll be in the shower."
"Don't shave, I like the beard thing you've got going on there."
"I won't."
"He won't stop grabbing my face." Dean mumbled from where he laid on the floor with JJ on his chest. He wasn't exactly mobile, but he was very grabby.
"At least he doesn't pull your hair. He pulls hard for a little guy." Casey stated from where she sat on the couch, scrolling through her Instagram.
"He's got his daddy's brute strength." Dean praised, flexing his biceps just as Casey took a picture.
"That's so going on Instagram."
"Do it."
"There's no caption necessary." She mumbled as she posted it before she laid on the floor beside her husband. "We have really comfortable rugs."
"Why do you think I like being on the floor so much? By the way, Seth wants to have a big dinner in JJ's honor."
"I don't know if I'm ready to fully showcase him to the world yet. Pictures are much different than seeing him in person." Casey mumbled and he nodded. "But I guess it couldn't hurt. If you want to, that is."
"I think a dinner in a public place with friends is a good trial run, and then we can take baby steps from there." He suggested, pulling her into his side and she rest her head on his chest beside JJ's. "This feels so right, Casey."
"It does."
"Sure, I got pissed on today, but other than that, it was an all around amazing day."
"I feel like something is missing, though." Casey mumbled into his shirt and he nodded before whistling. It wasn't long before they heard the dogs running down the stairs. "There we go." She stated once she felt Carter curled up behind her knees and Parker at her feet, resting his head on her leg.
