"Daddy, come on!" Mariah groaned as soon as she got out of the car, pulling at Dean's hand towards the entrance of the store. He had devoted his days off to being with his family, like always. Only since it was October, that meant getting the house ready for Halloween. He and Caseyhad gotten into the habit going all-out with their decor and never had the same setup twice, and he was pretty proud of it.
So, after plenty of negotiating and groaning about getting homework done and eating dinner first, Dean and Casey took their two kids to get their Halloween costumes. Mariah was more than just excited, since it was the first year that she'd actually get to go, pick, and try on her costume instead of telling Casey what she wanted to be and the Bella knowing just what to get in what size and returning what didn't fit. For JJ it was just another trip to get his Halloween costume, only Dean wasn't sure what the boy was going to be this year since he never really stuck to a theme. He was a pumpkin one year, a sun the next, then he was a duck, then a fireman, then a classic sheet ghost, and last year he was a vampire. So the blonde had no idea what his son could possibly be this year, but he had a bet going with Casey. She said ninja, while he was going for dinosaur.
"Calm down, squirt. The store isn't going anywhere." He assured, pulling her in so he could lift her up to his hip. She rest her head on his shoulder and he smiled, since she had always been a daddy's girl.
"J, how about we do yours first since you know what you wanna be?" Casey suggested, looking to their son for a response as they entered the store.
"Can Dad help Mariah and you help me real quick? I want it to be a secret." JJ asked, looking between his parents in hope of a positive answer. Casey looked to Dean, who shrugged. He tried his best to not be offended that his son didn't want him knowing what he wanted to be, but couldn't help the pang of jealousy that Casey would know first.
"That's fine. The girl costumes are over there, Dean."
"Call if you run into trouble, alright?" Dean asked, looking to his wife for an affirmative response.
"Yes, sweetheart." She assured, palming his face and kissing his lips despite the gagging noises erupting from their children. "I love you."
"Love stinks. Let's go daddy." Mariah threw in her two cents, bringing smiles out of her parents.
"Love you, too." Dean called as Casey and JJ walked away, both waving over their shoulders at him.
"Alright, bud, let me in on the secret." Casey prompted once he had gotten to the wall of available costumes and watched as his blue eyes scanned the wall of pictures. "JJ."
"I wanna be Dad for Halloween. Like, when you guys were The Shield with Uncle Seth and Uncle Roman." The boy spoke quietly, looking up at his mother. She smiled brightly at him before looking to the wall and pointing at the S.W.A.T costume.
"We can definitely do something that. You'll need a couple extras like the boots and dog tags and we'll definitely have to comb that hair back but you'll definitely look just like a little version of your father." She listed, pushing the blonde curls back and kissing his forehead. "Go tell the attendant what you want."
Meanwhile, Dean had his hands full with Mariah. She wanted every other costume and it took her forever to decide on just one. Honestly, he wasn't a fan of "Honey Bee Princess" because the skirt it came with looked too short and puffed out a bit and it just bothered him. But he couldn't say no to his little girl and asked for the costume since Mariah got shy around strangers. It was up to her to try it on by herself and once she was in there Casey had walked up with JJ.
"Is she trying it on?"
"You might need to go in and help. She said she could handle it but I don't want to end up buying two because she ripped the first one."
"You wouldn't buy two, I'd just stitch that one back together." Casey corrected before slipping into the changing room to help their daughter. Dean moved to stand beside JJ, ruffling his hair affectionately.
"What are you gonna be?"
"S.W.A.T. Mom is gonna help me make it cooler, though." JJ used the line Casey fed him, smiling up at his father. Dean only nodded, smirking down at his son proudly as Mariah and Casey came out.
"Ta-da!" The little girl sang, doing a twirl like the ones Casey did in the kitchen to kill time while she cooked.
"Does it have a pants option?" Dean asked, looking at the Halloween costume his five year old daughter had tried on. Both she and her mother huffed in unison, making him and his son roll their eyes. "Case, come on. It's short. She'll get cold."
"Dean, it's one night and we'll be with her the whole time."
"And she'll wear it to school, Casey. What if she falls?"
"She'll wear shorts underneath the dress."
"I dunno. Are you sure there weren't other costumes you were interested in, Princess? Maybe ones with pants?" Dean asked, squatting down to be at eye level with his daughter. Mariah was just as stubborn as her mother, and definitely just as adorable as her mother when she was mad. "For me?"
"We can go look, daddy." Mariah mumbled before going back into the changing room with Casey. Dean looked down at the now seven year old JJ and gave a smile, seeing the S.W.A.T costume in his hands making him think back to Shield days for a moment.
"Bored?"
"Kinda." JJ responded, rocking on his heels out of boredom. "I'll live."
"You sound like your mother." Dean chuckled, ruffling his son's curly blonde hair before leaning down to kiss the top of his head. "I know it's hard when you've got your costume figured out and your mom and sister are being divas about it."
"Mom used to be the Divas Champion. Isn't she supposed to be a diva?"
"Your mother got into the Hall of Fame with her title reigns. But yes, she's allowed to have her diva moments."
"Watching her get imducted was cool."
"Inducted." He corrected with a nod, smiling at the memory. "But yes, it was very cool."
"How come Aunt Nikki and Aunt Brie didn't go in, too? They were a team like The Four Horsemen." JJ asked, looking up at Dean curiously. He admired his father for all of his wrestling knowledge and thought it was really cool that he knew so much.
"Well, and don't tell them or your mother that I said this, they didn't really do much in comparison. Your mom was the first ever Divas Intercontinental Champion and had the longest Divas title reign in history for a while. Your Aunt Nikki only had the Divas title for a week." He explained, finishing just as Casey came out with Mariah. She looked at him quizzically but dropped it, tossing the costume to him before following Mariah to the wall of girl's costumes.
"Do we have to be hospitable gentlemen because they're in a mood?"
"You always have to be a hospitable gentleman, even if they're not in a mood."
"What if they're being really rude and undeserving?"
"That's where we smile, be gentlemen, and kill them with kindness." Dean ended the life lesson by tapping his son's side and ruffling his hair. "If you can help me get us out of here within the hour we'll go get ice cream and you can get two scoops."
Dean watched as Casey looked through their drawers for something. It was almost midnight and he had just come in from hanging the fake spiderweb on their porch. He had originally come in to ask where their giant fake spider was but forgot when he saw her almost frantically searching through the drawer.
"What are you looking for?"
"If I told you, it would ruin JJ's surprise costume."
"You're going to end up telling me sooner or later."
"He wants to be you for Halloween. So he got the S.W.A.T gear and we were going to get boots this weekend and he already has a little Shield hoodie."
Dean didn't know what to say. His son looked up to him so much that he wanted to be him for Halloween? That was incredible. He felt honored.
"Can you be speechless and get me those dog tags at the same time?" Casey asked, completely awed by her husband's reaction. She thought it'd be a no-brainer with how much JJ looked up to him, but Dean had a tendency to overlook things and sometimes overreact. But he did as she asked, getting the dog tags for her and pulling her into a hug.
"Everything alright, Dean?"
"Just happy to be a father, Case."
"You can't tell JJ that you know. I can't do him giving me the silent treatment."
"Secret's safe. I can't wait to tell the guys, though."
It's been a while since I put out a little moment and Halloween just makes me so happy. By far, my favorite holiday.
Review, please! :)
