One in the Same - Free
Natalie slowed again and listened. The cars were getting closer. She continued running until she could hear them without stopping. She stood on her hind legs and pulled her pants down as far as they would go without falling off, trying to look normal. It was hard when he legs were grafted inwards and her arms were extra-long so she could run like a cheetah.
She sniffed the air and sensed the cars less than a mile away. She pondered if she should follow the road or just wait for more escapees to find her. But she knew, if she waited, there was the possibility that a white coat would find her.
She carefully walked forward and a few minutes later, he ground under her feet changed. She stayed on the very edge of the road, walking and hoping no one would stop her. Her knees were bending the wrong way and her face and arms had spots on them.
She breathed the slightly fresh desert air in and sighed loudly. Even though the sun was beating down on her and she was feeling light headed, she felt amazing. Because there was one thing she knew and that was that the white coats would never find her now. She was free.
Jaedon's smile faded as he realized that they had no way to communicate with this other person. As the person got closer, he could tell it was a girl by the long, wavy hair and bright eyes. He could see that her wings were covered in fur and there was fur on her arms. He looked at Julia, who was smiled. He poked her on the shoulder. How are we supposed to talk to her?
Julia's smile faded and she pondered the thought a bit. Then she signed back. We can just try our best.
Jaedon sighed and turned back to the girl. It didn't really matter that they couldn't talk, they could probably get out of the desert anyway. As the girl landed, he was momentarily able to ignore the sun scorching his back and the sand flying in his eyes. It didn't matter now. He was free.
Talia eyed the pair wearily. She had to admit, the boys eyes were adorable. The girl looked very similar to herself, except her eyes. The girl was sitting down and her legs looked very thin. Must be a failed experiment… she thought. She noticed that they were signing to each other. Oh, dang it! She thought. Are they deaf or something?
"Hey," Talia used her wings to keep herself up. The bones in her wings were able to shift and sort of work as crutches. She awkwardly stood on her weak legs. She let out a sigh of relief when the girl looked up at her voice. That meant she could hear. "Are you, like… Deaf, or something?"
The girl shook her head and pointed to the boy and nodded.
Talia scratched her head. "So you're not deaf but he is?" The girl nodded again. "But… you can't talk?" Another nod. "Oh, well this is a lovely predicament." The girl laughed. The boy looked slightly un comfortable, but Talia sort of expected that.
"So… Neither of you can fly?" The boy shook his head and shifted his shoulders a bit, unfolding a pair of beautiful, tawny wings. "Then… Why aren't you flying?"
The girl pointed to herself, pumped her hands over her chest and pointed up.
"So… You can't breathe up in the air?" Talia guessed. The girl nodded. "Okay, I've got an idea." Talia watched as the girl translated for the boy. "I'll carry you," She pointed at the girl. "And I'll fly low. He can fly higher, above us."
They both nodded and the boy flapped his wings until he was in the air. He soared in circles above them.
"Alright, just…" Talia trailed off. "Um, climb onto my back." The girl smiled as Talia bent down and helped the girl on to her back. "Boy, you're really light. My names Talia, by the way." The girl on her back laughed, a light, musical laugh and Talia flapped up to about twenty feet above the ground.
Talia sighed and wished she could flip and play in the air, but she reminded herself of the mutant on her back. The two seemed really attached, that he would walk all that way just because she couldn't fly. Talia sighed loudly and smiled. The world all seemed happy now, she helped two other mutants and she was free again. And no one could hold her back now. She was free.
Eathan struggled to keep himself running. Logan was slowing down, but the people behind them seemed to get ever closer, even though they were walking calmly. The sand beneath them seemed to get harder and harder to walk through. The two white coats were so close now that Eathan could tell it was a woman and a man. They seemed to be talking while they pursued them.
"If only there was some water…" Eathan muttered angrily. He wasn't getting caught again, not without a fight. And he certainly wasn't going to let Logan get caught. Not if he was still alive.
Eathan suddenly noticed that there was a road ahead of them. From the vague memories he had, he remembered that their parents had died in a car accident and that was when they were kidnapped. So, he was obviously afraid of cars. But it must lead to a town or city. He thought happily. The weight of protecting Logan seemed lighter as he ran, because he knew if he could just outrun the white coats to the nearest town, they wouldn't dare make a scene.
Nothing seemed to matter anymore. Logan would be safe, they could get into a foster care and be safe. No, nothing could stop him now. He was free.
Natasha angrily kicked the sand. "Why are they running?"
"Well," Steve started, "They're probably cared to death of scientists and we're still wearing these coats. They can't bring the happiest memories."
Natasha cursed and ripped the lab coat off, now fully dressed in her black cat suit. Steve took his off too and they left them to float away in the wind.
Steve smiled as Natasha cracked her neck and shook her hair out of the ponytail. "Better?" He joked.
Natasha sighed contentedly. "Much better."
