Chapter 15!
Hey y'all. Ew, I'm never saying that again xD
NEW CHAPTER NEW CHAPTER NEWWWW CHAPTER TIME!
This is NOT the last chapter but be warned that I completely suck at writing endings to stories.
Shinichi handed Kaito a cold drink while Kaito sat on the couch and fanned himself with his hand.
"It can't be helped," Shinichi said, shrugging. "We're going to have to wait until a repairman comes to fix the air conditioning."
"Ugh, I hate this heat!" Kaito said, finally taking a sip of his cool beverage, then pressing it to his warm face.
Shinichi slyly glanced sideways at Kaito from his new spot on the couch next to him. He cleared his throat then said nonchalantly, "Well, you could always just take some of your clothes off to get cool..."
Kaito froze for a moment, his face splitting immediately into a large grin. He scooted closer to Shinichi in preparation for flirtation. "You're right, Shinichi!" he exclaimed. "In fact, you look pretty hot as well. Maybe we should both take our clothes of..." He lightly caressed Shinichi's leg, and this whole fiasco caused Shinichi to blush.
I'm trying really hard to do this flirting thing but it's just way too demeaning! Shinichi thought, trying to suppress twitches from appearing on his face. This occurrence of derogatory words and intimate actions was really making him uncomfortable. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Shinichi jumped up with relief and said, "That must be the repairman, ha ha ha okay so I'll go get the door..."
Kaito deadpanned when Shinichi left. He was so obviously nervous about what had just happened; he had even used a thinly veiled excuse and a run-on sentence to take his leave! Kaito shook his head and snorted, then turned the tv on and began flipping through the channels.
After about twenty minutes, Shinichi returned, hands on his hips. "Well," he sighed, "he said that it was a complete wreck and it might take him an hour or two to fix, and a lot of money."
Kaito frowned. "I'm sorry, Shinichi!"
"Yeah, you should be! It's so freaking hot in this house! This should be a good lesson to not throw your weird little magic bombs around!" Kaito had thrown what he thought was a paint bomb at Shinichi the day before. Shinichi had ducked, and the bomb—which turned out to be one that explodes upon impact—hit the air conditioning device behind him.
When Shinichi sat down, Kaito leaned over and hugged him, genuinely feeling bad about his mistake. "I really am sorry..." He heard Shinichi sigh and mutter "Yeah, yeah."
Kaito resumed his channel flipping. "Ugh, why is there nothing good on?" he complained. He flipped past a kids show, a sitcom, a news report on Kaitou Kid—
"Wait, go back!" Shinichi exclaimed. Kaito went back to the news report at Shinichi's command, although he didn't seem as thrilled as Shinichi would expect. Shinichi had already learned of the impending heist, but maybe there was some new information.
After watching for a few minutes, he was disappointed to find that there was nothing new. "Kaito, isn't this exciting?" He patted Kaito's arm like a little kid trying to get his parent's attention. Kaito smiled.
"Yeah! I haven't been to a Kid heist in a while!" Kaito replied.
Shinichi furrowed his brow inquisitively. That really didn't sound as enthusiastic as he usually seemed to be at the announcement of the thief's new target. Was there a reason Kaito was maybe reluctant to see the thief in action for once?
Kaito kept a great poker face, but he was quite panicky inside. First of all, what if Shinichi found out it was him?! He would hate him! And then, he always felt guilty when he lied to Shinichi. And just everything about this heist felt bad. It's not like he could stop being Kaitou Kid, but what could he do about Shinichi? Surely he couldn't just tell him. As a detective, it would be Shinichi's duty to report it.
"Kaito?" Shinichi asked. "Are you sure there's nothing wrong?"
Kaito sighed inwardly. He can even tell when I'm upset through my poker face. "Actually, yeah," he admitted. Shinichi blinked, waiting for him to continue. "I...I really just..." he forced himself to blush. "You know Shinichi, you are just so damn interested in this Kaitou Kid! You have your own boyfriend right in front of you and all you can talk about is this guy. It's no wonder I'm so jealous!" He even huffed for good measure.
Shinichi raised a dubious eyebrow. "You're jealous of a thief?" he asked skeptically. Kaito nodded. "Ha! That's funny. Calm down; I just want to catch him, that's all." He patted Kaito's hand and then hesitantly gave him a quick peck on the lips.
Kaito still felt bad about lying, but at least he got a kiss out of it!
By Saturday night, the entire city was buzzing with excitement of the heist. The weather was relentless: the sun was down, but it was still over eighty degrees outside. Heist-watchers were wearing scant clothes and fanning themselves, bustling around and waiting for the heist to finally begin. They tried to spread out as much as possible—the body heat in a large crowd was just too much on this night. But it wasn't easy, since there were so many people out to watch the exciting glory of Kaitou Kid's next theft.
Shinichi was inside the (thankfully) air-conditioned Nanikawa Museum with the task force and, regrettably, Mouri Kogoro and his boisterous, tongue-sticking-out laugh. He shook his head slightly to himself in wonder. How could that man ever be taken seriously?
The task force and company were waiting, in position, surrounding the treasure and hiding in specific places throughout the building. Inspector Nakamori was sure that he would catch the darned thief this time, and they had a pretty good security set up too. It seemed that any way Kid tried to escape, there were policemen. However, they were all still very nervous since Kid had a history of getting through any type of barricade. Besides security, the task force had set up extra measures: they had back up lights in the event of Kid switching the power off as he normally did, and they were all supplied with flashlights.
Right as it hit 8:00 PM, the lights flickered and went out.
–
Kaito changed somewhat reluctantly into his disguise. It was 7:30 and he could see from his position in an alley a few blocks away that there were helicopters circling the museum and there were lights and a huge mob of people. He tugged his blue shirt on, grimacing at the heat pounding into his skin through the warm fabric. Once he was fully dressed, he was sweating and on the verge of panting. The bright side is, at least this might be the gem I'm looking for, he thought with a smile. Hope was spreading through his body the more he thought about it—or maybe that was the heat. Wiping off his brow and adjusting his tophat, Kaitou Kid closed his eyes and gave a silent, I'm sorry, Shinichi, to the detective he knew was waiting in the ranks of the police to arrest him. And then the heist began.
–
There was a moment's pause where all was silent, then the back-up lights flickered to life. Nakamori responded to this with a smirk, feeling already like he'd won. Of course, the moonlight thief was far from stupid; he had previously sabotaged the back-up lights as well. Only a few moments after they seemed to be stable, while the task force were whipping their heads to and fro to search for the criminal, the lights suddenly blackened again. Outside, the crowd cheered.
Why are they cheering for him?! Shinichi thought in irritation, fumbling to turn on his flashlight. Sure, he's not a murderer; sure, he seems like a fun person that people might be drawn to. But he is a criminal! His flashlight illuminated the surrounding area, as did the flashlights of others. Before long, the room seemed dimly lit, beams of light swinging around looking for the exciting host of the show.
Outside, the mob of people were cheering once again—louder this time. The officers nearest to the museum's windows looked out to see what the commotion was about. "Inspector!" one of them reported. "Kid just flew away outside in his hang glider!"
"What?!" Nakamori bellowed, running towards the gem kept under great surveillance. It seemed to still be in there, but...Kid had created fakes before. Unlocking the glass box, Nakamori reached in and snatched the gem. He inspected it closely for anything out of place. An officer beside him quickly slipped his hand over the inspector's and took the gem; clearly, the inspector had not been expecting this. He shouted and lashed out at the officer, who was already running away with a puff of smoke.
As soon as the inspector had unlocked the box, Shinichi understood what was happening. It was a trick just to get him to check. Before the officer—Kid—had reacted, Shinichi was running towards them. He was close on the thief's heels as he ran away. It seemed clear that he didn't intend to hide himself among the ranks this time, since he was running upstairs towards the roof exit.
Kid, smiling, glanced behind him. He expected that the police were frantic, scattering all over the place to follow him. When he saw Shinichi, the color drained from his face and for a moment he stopped smiling. After just a split second, he was back to it. Shinichi had noticed, triumphantly thinking that he had stumped the thief with his close following.
"Tantei-kun, you don't really want to catch me," he insisted, still making his way quickly up the stairs.
Shinichi laughed breathlessly behind him. "Of course I do!"
Kid's voice hardened. "No, you do not." Back to a humorous voice again, "Go back with the others and I won't give you a hard time." The door to the roof was in sight—along with some knocked out police officers. Already got them? Shinichi thought, impressed.
"Is that a threat?" Shinichi asked, almost shocked. What would the thief do to him, he wondered.
Kid turned around when he reached the door, looked Shinichi in the eyes. And...there was something familiar about those eyes. "It's more like a promise, Tantei-kun," he whispered. He held up a spray can of what Shinichi guessed was knock-out spray, and sprayed it into the detective's face. Then he opened the door and ran out to tussle with the remaining officers on the roof.
Shinichi covered his nose and mouth hard, refusing to breathe. The spray stung his eyes, but he blinked it away. After a moment, feeling a bit dizzy from the spray but otherwise very conscious, he ran out to the roof as well. Kid had dealt with all the officers and was turned the other way ready to take off. As soon as he ran and lifted into the air on his glider, Shinichi made one last jump and hung onto his legs.
Kid cried out in surprise, looking down. He sighed and smirked. "Tantei-kun, you just can't resist me, can you?"
"Not when I'm this close to catching you!" Shinichi retorted. He was actually really close this time, and the thrill and exhilaration was pumping through him.
Kid angled down to a close-by building and landed on the roof. Shinichi hung on tight, but Kid was able to pry him off. "Go home now, Tantei-kun," he said, waving good-bye and preparing to set off again.
"Not this time!" Shinichi growled, and rammed his body into Kid's. Kid fell to the ground, back—and glider—first. His glider made a horrible cracking noise, and...he was stuck. Now Shinichi fell to his knees and used them to restrain Kid's arms. Kid was struggling the best he could, but he knew that Shinichi was close enough to reveal his secret identity.
"Please don't," Kaito whispered, his last resort, as Shinichi's hand hovered over the monocle. Shinichi paused at the thief's pleading expression. It was so raw, compared to his usual characteristic smirk. But he only paused for a moment, and then he ripped off the monocle and the tophat.
And Kaito was left staring up at him in what could only be described as terror.
Okay I wasn't sure whether to let off at the part right before he was revealed or right where I did. Haha oh well. I thought this might be more suspenseful?
Hehehe I hope you liked it and are ready for MOARRRRR! :D
Also sorry if some of it didn't make sense. This is one of those that I could picture what was happening in my mind but I'm not sure if it worked when I wrote it down?
And, finally...I am so sorry for not updating! I need to discipline myself! I've been busy with school and, um, other things...such as Skyrim and Harry Potter. I actually have no excuses. I'm not busy at all. I just suck. But I promise that this time (since this is an actual plot-related cliff-hanging chapter) I will update within a week! PROMISE! Thanks for reading! As always, I love you all for hanging in there!
