Chapter 16!

Yaaay! This story is almost over :/ Only a few chapters left...

"Kaito...?" Shinichi asked in uncertainty, as if he wasn't sure of the face he was looking at. Then he shook his head wildly. "No, of course not. Ha ha. Don't trick me, you stupid thief." He pinched at Kaito's horrified face, hard. And he pulled and pinched, over and over but...the mask did not come off. "Wow, so..." Shinichi said, chuckling, still pulling on the other boy's face. His voice began to tremble, "what did you do, glue this to your face or something? I mean this mask or make up or whatever it is that's making you look like my boyfriend...I mean, it's really stuck on there. It's really stuck, right?"

His eyes were hopeful and yet glistening with tears. Oh no, Kaito thought. Shinichi has never cried. Never. This beautiful, wonderful man is about to cry, and it's all my fault. Finally, his own voice trembling, he admitted quietly, "There's nothing on my face, Shinichi."

And Shinichi knew it was true. The skin he was pulling wasn't overly stretchy, or weirdly textured, and it was turning completely red with the pinching actions. He stopped those actions; he knew the truth now, there was no point in prolonging the pain. But Kaito could not see him cry, of that Shinichi was firm. So he stood up and turned away, hoping that there was a way off this blasted roof.

He spotted a fire escape weaving its way down the building, and went to climb down it, and go home, just as Kaito had earlier told him to. His vision was blurry, swimming with tears, and his face was wet.

"Shinichi!" Kaito called, getting to his feet. He wobbled, feeling his legs shake. "Don't leave! Come on, just let me explain!"

Shinichi was already climbing down the other side of the building. He couldn't stop his voice from wavering, but it was a bit stronger than before as he said, "A detective's duty, firstly, is to abide by laws and solve crimes. I guess you don't respect that, Kaito, but I do. More than anything. And maybe I'm not going to tell the police who you are because, well, I...no, I'm not going to say that. Not now. Anyway just...leave me alone. I'll stay out of your way."

Kaito leaned over the edge of the building, calling out to him again. He began his descent down after his brokenhearted lover. He pleaded with Shinichi, following him downward.

Shinichi jumped down at the bottom, Kaito still a few feet up. "Come on, wait for me Shinichi!" he called.

Shinichi looked up at him, not caring anymore whether his tears were prominent or not. And they were, and they hurt for Kaito to see. "I just can't believe you lied to me like that," he said quietly, simply, and walked away.

Shinichi stumbled into his house, finally. He wasn't sure how long it took him to meander through the streets to get there. It was very dark and not even hot anymore by the time he got there—not that he noticed that much. He thought he could remember getting lost at one point, but he wasn't sure. He hadn't been thinking clearly, which was very strange for him.

Slumping down into his bed, he stripped his shirt off and carelessly threw it on the floor. He also wedged his shoes off, and his socks, and then numbly slid under the covers, suddenly cold. He buried his face into the pillow and told himself to be strong. It didn't work.

Kaito had been so many things: weird, annoying, insane, magical, evil...beautiful, perfect, amazing, funny, his boyfriend...and most of all, his best friend. Best friends told each other things, right? They helped each other and trusted each other. But Kaito had not.

Shinichi wasn't the type of person to be super sentimental, but what Kaito had done really hurt. Shinichi had loved Kaito, he was sure. What else could this ripping feeling in his chest mean? Kaito had lied, and that, above all else, was what stayed imprinted into his brain. It echoed throughout his mind, every corner, every inch, every second.

When Shinichi thought about it, at first he thought, Sure, I can see why he wouldn't tell me. He knows I would get him arrested. And he was right. Even if he's important to me, justice comes first. Always. But then he had let that sink in and he knew he was lying to himself. Who was he kidding? Illegal or not, this guy was Shinichi's favorite person. That really means something. If he'd told Shinichi, maybe not in the beginning, but after a while, he would have understood and he would not have ratted him out. Yeah, he would try to convince him not to do it, try to ask why he did do it.

That was one of the things that seemed strange—why? Why would Kaito do that? It's not like he was struggling financially, that Shinichi was aware of. He wasn't idiotic enough to do it just for fun. Why then?

When he thought about it, the fact that Kaito was Kid really was a little bit obvious now. All the times Kaito had been so excited for heists, all the talk of Kid and the defense of him, the absence of Kid when Kaito had helped Shinichi bounce back from his illness, and more recently...the reluctance of going to the latest Kid heist. He hadn't wanted to hurt Shinichi. Damn. Too late for that.

Shinichi sat up for a moment, and turned his pillow over to the dry side.

Oh my god the angst. Ugh. So many emotions o.O I get like...in tune with emotions when I write them so I'm really ugh now.

And neither of them are really emotional usually, you know? So it was weird, but I didn't think it was too out of character for the most part.

Oh yeah and at the end I didn't know if it was clear cause I kept mentioning how hot it was (which really had nothing to do with the story I just wanted to make it summer) I didn't know if you might have thought that Shinichi like soaked his pillow with sweat, which is gross, but it was wet cause he was crying. Kay so byeeee.

Thanks for staying with me! More to come soon! It's almost time for me to graduate from high school, whoa...I just finished taking AP exams and going on my senior trip and taking finals and...ugh I'm exhausted. Tomorrow is prom. I just want to sleep.
