Chapter 43: Prom Queen
Rachel looked at the prom ballot that had been handed out at her first period class.
To her disappointment, Finn and Quinn's names were both on the ballot, but she didn't expect anything less. She'd told Quinn to count on her vote, but the ballots were secret and anonymous. Quinn would have no way of knowing who Rachel voted for.
Rachel didn't want to vote for Quinn. Not after everything that had happened. Their conversation right before Regionals stung her to this day. She would vote for Finn for anything else, but she didn't want to see him have a big moment with another girl.
She didn't know half the people running very well. Sure, she had classes with them, but they'd never really talked. Santana had never been particularly nice to her, and she didn't want to see the boy who'd driven Kurt out of the school triumph either.
In her opinion, after doing some thinking, there was only one way to vote. She checked the boxes next to Puck and Lauren's names and dropped the ballot in the box on her teacher's desk.
"Who did you vote for?" Mercedes whispered to Rachel.
Should Rachel tell Mercedes that she didn't vote for Finn and Quinn? "I voted for Puck and Lauren," Rachel admitted.
"I voted for Santana, since she brought Kurt back," Mercedes said. "For king I voted for Puck."
"I see," Rachel said. She had to admit, she hadn't really trusted the whole Bully Whips thing. Something about it felt off to her.
x
Prom was this weekend and Rachel still wasn't sure if she was going.
To her dismay, Finn and Quinn were still together, and no one else had shown any interest in going with her. It wasn't that she wanted to go with someone else, she just... didn't want to feel completely pathetic.
Lauren, Santana and Brittany came into the choir room, talking about dresses. "I've been to Ann Taylor Loft, Filene's Basement, and, like, six Forever 21s and I can not find a dress that fits. I'm gonna be forced to make my own dress for prom," Lauren said.
"Don't. You'll seem poor," Brittany said.
"You're up for Queen, you can't make your own prom dress. Prom is like our Oscars. It's seriously, like, the most important night of our lives," Santana said.
"What about getting married?" Lauren asked.
"Oh, you can get married as many times as you want. You only have one shot at your Junior Prom," Quinn said.
Rachel thought that was a pretty accurate description of Quinn's viewpoint on life. Then Mercedes came in. "What are you guys talking about?"
"Prom dresses," Lauren said.
"Thank God I don't have to worry about that. I'm not going," Mercedes said.
At least Rachel wasn't the only one who wasn't going. "Why not?" Kurt asked.
"Nobody's asked me," Mercedes said.
Mr. Schue came in and wrote "prom" on the whiteboard. "Alright, guys — prom."
"Please tell me we're not doing songs about prom," Sam groaned.
"Nope — we are the prom," Mr. Schue announced. "Figgins has asked us to perform."
Well, performing at prom could work. "Let's do Run Joey Run!" Rachel joked, as the glee club gave her odd looks.
"Now, I know this isn't ideal with Nationals coming up, but we really don't have a choice," Mr. Schue continued. "And, we could really use the money. But I know that prom is a special rite of passage. I want to make sure that all of you guys get a chance to enjoy the dance, too. So we're gonna stag at the performances so that each and every one of you has a lot of time to dance with your dates."
Mercedes started to leave the room. "Excuse me."
"Is she okay?" Mr. Schue asked.
"Mercedes doesn't have a date for prom," Quinn said.
"So? I don't have a date. I'm just going to dance. And then all of your dates are gonna ignore you and come dance with me, so your dates are really my dates," Brittany said.
"I'm gonna go talk to Mercedes," Kurt said.
Rachel knew she could relate to Mercedes more. "No, let me." She left the classroom and went to Mercedes in the hall. "Hey. You know, I don't have a date to prom, either."
"You know, I know that I talk a good game about not needing a man, and I don't. I just really want to take a date to the prom. I want the dress, and the guy…the damn corsage," Mercedes admitted.
Rachel knew how Mercedes felt. "Somebody still may ask you."
"It's this Saturday," Mercedes sighed. "You know, I just wanted to be Cinderella. Just for one night. One night where a guy would…would look at me under those corny crepe paper streamers and say, 'You look so beautiful.' Then he'd grab my hand and ask me to dance. Isn't that what prom is supposed to be about?"
Rachel thought quickly. Maybe if they could get a decent amount of money, they could get Sam to go with them as friends. "You're not gonna go to prom alone. You'll go with me."
"That's even more depressing," Mercedes mumbled.
"I have a plan," Rachel said. "How about we see if Sam would like to go with us, you know, as friends? I can figure something out."
"You think he would?" Mercedes asked.
"I hope so," Rachel said. Sam had said no when Rachel had asked him, but maybe as friends he'd do.
x
After school the next day, Rachel and Mercedes asked Sam to meet them in the auditorium. "Is this a surpise party or something? Because my birthday was last week," Sam asked.
Rachel hadn't known that. "It was? Um, no. Mercedes and I, we have a proposition for you."
"We were wondering if you'd like to go to prom with us," Mercedes said.
"Kind of like a three-way date, but not the dirty kind," Mercedes said.
"That sounds great, but I can't afford to take one girl to the prom. I don't know how I'm gonna take two," Sam admitted. Rachel handed him some cash. "What's this?" Sam asked.
"Our prom budget," Rachel said.
"You're gonna have to borrow a suit from your dad and we're gonna buy $5 dresses down at the Goodwill and make our own corsages out of flowers from my mom's garden," Mercedes said.
"And we can walk to prom and then use what's left to get the $8.99 all-you-can-eat pasta special at Breadstix. But, you know, the $20 — it's not charity, it's a loan," Rachel said.
"So… you'll go with us?" Mercedes asked.
"It would be an honor," Sam said as he hugged both girls. Maybe prom would be fun after all. Rachel really liked both Sam and Mercedes and there wouldn't be pressure this way.
x
"Rachel, I need to help you pick out a prom dress," Kurt said as they hung out at the Hudson-Hummel house. "I can tell Blaine to get one of the Warblers to go with you."
"I actually have plans for prom," Rachel said. "Sam, Mercedes and I are going as a group of friends."
"That sounds fun," Kurt said.
Finn came in. "Hey guys."
Rachel smiled when Finn came in. "Hey Finn."
"What are you two up to?" Finn asked.
"I'm trying to help Rachel pick out a prom dress," Kurt said.
"Mercedes and I are getting our dresses at Goodwill," Rachel said.
Finn groaned.
"What's wrong?" Kurt asked.
"I'll be so glad when prom's over," Finn said.
"What's wrong?" Rachel asked.
"I'm so sick of all Quinn's talk about it," Finn said. "She's clearly only with me because she thinks I'll be prom king after winning the big football game, even though that hype died down."
"Why don't you just break up with her then?" Kurt asked. Rachel was glad Kurt had been the one to say it.
"I feel like if I do, she'll completely lose it and make my life a living hell," Finn said.
"So you're with her because you're afraid of her?" Rachel asked.
"I'm not into her," Finn said. "Not like I should be. I always find myself feeling bad about myself when I'm with her."
"I'm sorry," Rachel said. She knew she wouldn't treat Finn that way, but Finn clearly didn't want to be with her anymore. "Maybe things will get better after prom."
"I doubt it," Finn sighed, going upstairs.
x
The next day, Rachel went to the auditorium to practice one of the songs she had in mind for prom and saw the AV club there, getting some of the decorations ready. "Oh! Uh, members of the audio-visual club, I might possibly sing this song at prom and when I'm done rehearsing, I'd like your feedback. Tell me whether I was brilliant or simply outstanding." She began to sing.
Rachel: There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out of the dark
Then she heard a familiar voice join in the song. She looked up and saw Jesse St. James. Probably the last person she wanted to see.
Jesse: Finally, I can see you crystal clear,
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I'll leave
With every piece of you,
Don't underestimate
The things that I will do,
There's a fire
Starting in my heart,
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringin' me out the dark
The scars of your love
Remind me of us,
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all,
The scars of your love,
They leave me breathless,
I can't help feeling
Jesse and Rachel: We could have had it all,
Rolling in the deep,
You had my heart inside of your hand,
And you played it to the beat
Jesse: With a beating
Throw your soul through every open door,
Rachel: Count your blessings to find what you look for,
Jesse: Turn my sorrow into treasured gold,
Rachel: You'll pay me back in kind and reap just what you've sown,
Jesse and Rachel: Yeah, we could have had it all
We could have had it all
Yeah, it all, it all, it all
We could have had it all,
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hands,
And you played it to the beat,
You could have had it all,
Rolling in the deep,
You had my heart inside of your hands,
And you played and you played and you played
And you played it to the beat
At the end of the song, Jesse looked at Rachel. "It's good to see you again, Rachel."
How did he even know where she was? "Jesse, what are you doing here?" Rachel asked.
"I mean, how was I supposed to know that I was actually supposed to show up to those other classes at school?" Jesse asked. "I was majoring in show choir. I just assumed it would be like at Carmel and the school would get some Asian kid to take Math and English and Scientific for me."
"That's awful," Rachel said. So Jesse had
"I came back to see you, Rachel. What I did to you, it's my one great regret," Jesse said.
Rachel thought about how odd that had been. "Yeah. It was kind of weird. When one day, you were telling me that you loved me, and then you were inexplicably throwing eggs at my head the next."
"I know, I know. I traded love for a fourth consecutive national championship. It was a bum deal. For a first, maybe, but for a fourth, no way. I've come to make amends. So what are you doing for prom?" Jesse asked.
This was weird. "How did you know my prom's coming up?" Rachel asked.
"Oh, I've been keeping tabs on you all year," Jesse said. "Luckily for me you have a public Twitter page."
Rachel made a mental note to protect her tweets. "I'm going with some friends."
"What about we go together?" Jesse asked.
"No," Rachel said. "I'm going with my friends."
"That doesn't mean I can't crash with you guys," Jesse said. "Come on, Rachel, it'll be fun. I'll pay for dinner for all of you."
Rachel sighed. "Let me check with the friends I'm going with." Maybe Jesse had changed. It had been a year.
x
"Finn!"
Finn was reading in his room when Kurt came in. "What's up?" Finn asked.
"I just got off the phone with Mercedes," Kurt said. "Guess who's in town?"
"Who?" Finn asked.
"Jesse!" Kurt said.
Finn felt his heart skip a beat. What if Jesse hurt Rachel again? "What?"
"Mercedes just called," Kurt said. "Jesse wants to go to prom with Rachel."
No. That was not okay. "Oh my God." Finn began mentally beating himself up. This was all his fault. If he hadn't gotten back with Quinn, he and Rachel could have gone to prom as friends. He wanted Rachel as far away from Jesse St. James as possible. He didn't trust Jesse. He knew what Jesse really was: a fame and self obsessed little shrew who didn't care about others at all.
"Yeah," Kurt said. "I don't trust him. Neither does Mercedes."
"Then why are you guys letting Rachel go with him?" Finn asked.
"Rachel seems to think he's changed," Kurt said. "Apparently he flunked out of college. He was only a straight A student at Carmel because the school got other students to do his homework and take his tests in academic classes and he spent all his time practicing."
So Jesse was a liar as well. Finn found himself liking Jesse less and less. "I'm going to have to talk to Rachel tomorrow."
x
The next day, Finn found Rachel in the hallway and decided now would be as good a time as any to talk to her. "So, I heard a nasty rumor that Jesse St. James is back in town, and I also heard that he's going to be your date," Finn said.
"No, he's joining Mercedes and Sam and I on our prom on a budget," Rachel said. "He's gonna be in town for a while, though, so I'm not sure what's gonna come of it."
Finn couldn't let Jesse hurt Rachel again. "I just…I don't trust him. I mean, don't you remember what he did to you? How awful he was?"
"You can't tell me what to do anymore, okay?" Rachel snapped. "If I want to date Jesse or anyone, for that matter, it stopped being your business when you broke up with me."
What could Finn say to that? Rachel was right. "I still care about you."
Rachel gave Finn a sad look. "Look. All I ask is that, whoever I choose, that you be as supportive of me as I've been with you and Quinn, even though I'm dying every day inside about it."
Finn knew what this meant. Rachel still wanted to be with him. That meant something, right? "You know, I don't even wanna go to the stupid prom anymore. Quinn's got me handing out pins with our names on them, and where's the dignity? And I hate renting those tuxes and the corsage. I know I'm gonna pick the wrong one and then Quinn's gonna be all pissed off and her mom's gonna look at me like.."
"Hey," Rachel said softly. "Just get her something simple. A wrist corsage. Girls like Quinn, you don't want to do anything that's gonna distract from their face, so ask for a gardenia. With a light green ribbon wrapped around it to match her eyes. Okay?"
Rachel walked away looking ready to cry, and all Finn wanted to do was hug her.
x
Finn couldn't take his mind off Rachel. When he got home, he tried to take his mind off things and watched a hockey game on TV. Blaine came in while Finn was watching TV. "So you think it's cool if I jam with you guys at prom?" Blaine asked.
"Yeah, totally," Finn said. He really liked Blaine and knew the rest of the glee club did too.
Burt came in. "Good news, boys. My buddy Enzo from the tux rental shop is giving you half off."
"Sweet," Finn said. This way he'd at least save some money.
"Yeah," Burt said. "So what are you gonna go with?"
"I'm going simple," Blaine said. "Black, thin lapel collar, very discreet."
"You know what I wore at my prom?" Burt asked. "I wore a powder blue tux with a ruffled shirt and a big velour bowtie. I looked like Tony Orlando."
"Was that a designer?" Blaine asked.
"No," Burt said.
Kurt came in wearing what Finn assumed was Kurt's prom outfit - a suit jacket, white shirt, bowtie and kilt. "No need for half off my outfit!" Kurt declared.
"Because half of it is already off?" Burt asked.
"My ensemble is an homage to the recent royal wedding and the late Alexander McQueen," Kurt said. "I had to make it myself. There's simply nothing off the rack that is suitable for the young fashionable man in Ohio."
Finn had to admit, he liked Kurt's outfit. "Dude, that rocks. It's like gay Braveheart."
"I don't like it," Burt said.
"Well, of course you don't like it!" Kurt said. "It's not finished yet. I think it still needs, like, a sash, or maybe some beads."
"I'm not gonna stop you from wearing it," Burt said. "But I gotta be honest, I think you're just trying to stir the pot a little bit. I think you're trying to get some attention."
"Exactly!" Kurt declared. "What's the point of dressing up? I mean, that's why some guys wear the tails or the top hat and the girls wear the hoop skirts. I mean, Blaine, help me out here!"
"I think your dad has a point," Blaine said. "I think what he's trying to say is that we just don't want to give anyone a reason to cause any trouble."
"There's a lot of bad people out there, Kurt, and they're a lot worse than this Karofsky kid," Burt lectured. "And all they're looking for is a match to light under the fire of their hate. Of course, I want…I want you to be yourself. But I also…I want you to be practical."
Kurt looked annoyed. "Okay. I have done everything right. Now Blaine, I understand that, after what you've been through, you're worried. But prom is about joy, not about fear. So I'm wearing this suit. I worked hard on it and I think it's fantastic. And if you don't want to join me, I completely understand." He left the room as Blaine turned to Finn. "Do you think things will be okay at prom?"
"Well, ever since the anti bullying program started, there has been less bullying at our school," Finn admitted. He did see where Burt was coming from. He just hoped things would be okay for Kurt.
x
It was prom night, and Rachel was at Breadstix with Jesse, Sam and Mercedes. So far both Sam and Mercedes had been pretty distant from Jesse, and he hadn't been too obnoxious to either of them. "Mercedes, can I just say that you look fierce in your dress?" Rachel asked.
"Totally, Mercedes. You both look smoking," Jesse added.
"You're damn straight, we do," Mercedes said.
"Seriously though, Jesse, what do you think of the bolo tie?" Sam asked. "Pretty cool, right? It's all Springsteen-on-the-cover-of-Tunnel-Of-Love-album wearing it."
"Dude, that was like, 20 years ago," Jesse said, reminding Rachel of what Jesse was like."I'm really sorry to hear about what happened with your family, Sam."
"Um, I hope it's okay. I sort of filled Jesse in on what was going on," Rachel told Sam.
"Of course it's okay," Jesse rambled. "Sam has nothing to be ashamed of. I know how tough it is out there. I couldn't even get a job as one of those singing waiters at Johnny Rocket's. But I've got an idea. They say that the best time to start any business is during a recession. I don't know why, or even what a recession is, but it's my understanding that we're in one."
"He's so smart. I can't believe he flunked out of college," Rachel said sarcastically.
"So I was thinking," Jesse continued. "What are the two things that I'm great at? Show choir and destroying the competition. So, what if I opened up a dance studio where I could act as a consultant for show choirs looking to get that extra edge?"
"Do you think there are enough show choirs to keep you in business?" Mercedes asked.
Rachel realized this was actually a good idea. Maybe Jesse could help out with Nationals. After all, he had led Vocal Adrenaline to four titles. "Of course there are. That's a brilliant idea. You could be like the Show Choir Whisperer. I'm sure we could get Mr. Schue to hire him in a second and that's how we could beat Vocal Adrenaline!"
Quinn and Finn came up to the table. "Hey guys, you look amazing! And don't forget to vote for Hudson-Fabray tonight."
"Hey, Jesse! Whatcha ordering, scrambled eggs? I mean, I know you usually like them served on peoples' heads," Finn said.
Rachel had to laugh at that, but to her disappointment, Jesse didn't react. Instead, he looked at Quinn. "Quinn, you look stunning. The ghost of Grace Kelly. Let me know if you get tired of your boyfriend stomping on your pretty little feet all night, I'd be more than happy to cut in."
Quinn could dance with Jesse and Rachel could dance with Finn. Yep, that sounded good. But Mercedes cut in. "Okay, hush, you guys. You're totally ruining the vibe. Quinn, you look hot. Finn, you look handsome. Love you guys. But get lost. We'll see you there!"
After Finn and Quinn left, Sam banged the table. "Who's ready for prom?"
x
Prom hadn't been any fun for Finn at all.
Despite the fact that Sam, Mercedes, Rachel and Jesse had gone as a group, Jesse seemed to want to spend lots of time with Rachel. Well, to be fair, Sam sung the first song, so maybe he'd leave Rachel alone for the second one. It turned out Rachel would be singing next. She stepped up on to the podium, and Finn couldn't help but feel sad as he listened to her.
Rachel: No, I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
And don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore?
You lost the love I loved the most
I learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time
And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?
It took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back
And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
Finn couldn't help but wonder - had that song been directed at him? Rachel had been looking at him a lot, but she'd been looking at Jesse a lot as well. Blaine came on stage to sing the next song, and Rachel went back to the floor. To Finn's disappointment, Sam and Mercedes had pretty much gone off on their own, so he watched in disgust as Rachel danced with Jesse. Then he saw Jesse getting a little too close to Rachel and walked over, pulling Jesse off Rachel. "Hey, hey. Dude, keep it PG."
"Dude, it's none of YB - Your Business," Jesse mocked.
Finn had to think fast. "Well, this is my school, so it's my business."
"This isn't your girlfriend, so beat it, MJ," Jesse snapped, turning back towards Rachel. Finn pushed Jesse aside as Rachel tried to pull them apart and Quinn shouted, "You're ruining everything!"
Then Sue Sylvester came over and pulled Finn and Jesse off each other. "Prom's over for you, Sugar Ray! You too, Marvelous Marvin! You're out, let's go!"
"You're kicking me out?" Finn asked.
Sue started to drag Finn and Jesse out. "Wait, but he and I are nominated for prom king and queen!" Quinn called.
"Sucks for you, sister!" Sue shouted as she escorted Finn and Jesse outside. Now Finn felt like a horrible person. He had to admit, he hadn't been the best prom date to Quinn tonight. No one deserved to have their date spend their prom night watching someone else.
x
Shortly after Finn and Jesse left, Principal Figgins took the stage. "Will the candidates for king and queen gather on the stage?" All those nominated went to the stage. "The votes are in. This is the moment you've all been waiting for, where we announce our Junior Prom King and also Prom Queen," Figgins continued. "Roll the drum, please. This year's Junior Prom King is..." He pulled a name out of an envelope after a drum roll. "David Karofsky!"
So the boy who had bullied Kurt had won. Rachel watched uncomfortably as Karofsky was crowned and handed a scepter.
"And now, your 2011 McKinley High Prom Queen, with an overwhelming number of write in votes is..." Figgins continued. Write in votes? Who could it have been? Figgins looked slightly disturbed as he read the name. "Kurt Hummel."
Kurt? The bullying wasn't over. It had just become silent. Rachel scanned the room for Kurt, who had already darted out and was being chased by Blaine. The students stood around in silence as Rachel contemplated chasing after Kurt as well. But before she had a chance, Quinn came off the stage and glared at Rachel. "You did this to me!"
How had Rachel done this? Quinn stomped on Rachel's foot and stormed to the bathroom. Rachel followed her.
"Quinn, you need to calm down," Rachel said.
Quinn turned around. "This is your fault! Nobody ever would have voted for me because they know he would rather be with you."
"That's not true," Rachel protested. She highly doubted that would have any impact on who people voted for.
Quinn turned around and slapped Rachel. Then Rachel realized she was in the wrong place with the wrong person. She should have gone with Blaine to see Kurt. "I'm so sorry," Quinn mumbled.
"Most girls would be upset about being slapped in the face, but I happen to appreciate the drama of it," Rachel said, trying to help Quinn feel better.
"I know you think it's hard to be you, Rachel, but at least you don't have to be terrified all the time," Quinn said.
That didn't make sense. "What are you so scared of?" Rachel asked.
"The future," Quinn admitted. "When all this is gone."
Rachel was scared of the future too. But maybe now wasn't the right time to talk about that. "Look, you have nothing to be scared of. You're a very pretty girl, Quinn. Prettiest girl I've ever met. But you're a lot more than that. Here." She handed Quinn a paper towel.
"Thanks," Quinn said.
"You're welcome," Rachel said.
"Not just that," Quinn said. "Just - thanks for coming in here with me. Not a lot of people would do that, especially after how I treated you."
"I know what it's like to feel rejected," Rachel said. "I know this is upsetting for you, but we should go out there and be supportive of Kurt. He's got to feel a lot worse about this."
"I'll be there in a few minutes," Quinn said. "I just need some time."
"All right," Rachel agreed as she went back to the dance. Kurt had made his way to the front of the room, and Figgins crowned Kurt. "Eat your heart out, Kate Middleton," Kurt declared.
Rachel sighed with relief, glad Kurt was taking this okay. She just hoped the dance with Karofsky wouldn't be too hard for Kurt. However, Karofsky left the room, and Kurt instead had his first dance with Blaine.
x
Later that night, Kurt got home from prom with Rachel and Mercedes while Finn was playing a video game. "How'd it go?" Finn asked.
"Well, I was prom queen," Kurt said.
Finn jumped up. "What?!" He didn't expect that.
"Yeah, some sort of secret ballot joke," Kurt said. "But I showed them who was on top."
"Are you okay?" Finn asked, feeling worried about his brother.
"Well, it was pretty humiliating," Kurt admitted. "But I'll be fine."
"Quinn apparently took not being elected prom queen pretty hard," Mercedes said. "She slapped Rachel."
"What?" Finn asked.
"Don't worry about it," Rachel said.
Of course Finn was going to worry. "Rach, no one hits you!" He turned to Kurt. "And no one can do things like that to you, either."
"Finn, it was just a stupid joke," Kurt said. "I made it look like it didn't bother me, so hopefully that didn't give them any power."
"You seemed pretty upset at first," Rachel pointed out.
"Yeah, but I'm feeling better now," Kurt said.
"Are you sure?" Finn asked. He felt horrible that he hadn't been there to defend his brother.
"Yeah," Kurt said.
"What about you?" Finn asked, turning to Rachel. "Are you okay?"
"Finn, I just got slapped," Rachel said. "It's not a big deal."
"If you say so," Finn said. He went back to his video game, watching Rachel out of the corner of his eye as she went upstairs with Kurt and Mercedes.
