SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT

CHAPTER 20

Herald walked into the radio broadcasting centre and approached the two lead singers of a band he used to be in. They sat on a couch looking bored. It was a girl and boy who looked to be in their late teens (say 18 or 19). The girl had skunk coloured highlights in her brown hair, and she wore a dress with a lot of polka dots. The boy had a crew cut and wore a shirt that said "I'M WITH STUPID!" his shoes were grey coloured all-stars. When approached by Herald their eyes widened.

"So, you guys still going under the name Striped Flag?" Herald asked whilst twirling his Gabriel's Horn around using his pointer finger. "'Cause I need you to do something for me." He held up a music composition and a piece of notebook paper with lyrics on them. The title on the heading of both sheets read: KOLE'S SONG.

Beast Boy tensed. He knew they were almost to the warehouse, he could just feel it. Sort of like the feeling he gets when he's about to fight crime. Except this feeling was bigger. Slade was the person him and his little group of comrades were fighting.

"What the?" Said Roy pointing out his window at a standing finger holding their thumb out, "Is that a weed-head?"

Everyone looked in the direction Roy's finger was pointed.

Wonder Girl slowed down. "No, I think's she's poor or something. I've seen a lot junkies and they don't look anything like that."

Roy tensed up at the word "junkie" but no one seemed to notice.

Kid Flash still had his earphones in, so he didn't hear what anyone said, but still did he take off his earphones. "Wait, that looks like...

Beast Boy finished his sentence. "...That's Kole. Stop the car Wonder Girl! Pull over!" He didn't say it in a mean way. His tone was like when you've spotted something in a scavengers hunt.

Wonder Girl's face was of perplexity but she didn't ask any questions. She did as told.

Kole smiled gratefully and immediately did she get inside the car. She hadn't noticed their faces yet, and had started telling her reason for hitch hiking. "I'm thankful you're giving me a ride. Really, I am! It's just that I was staying at this hotel that's a boat ride and like two thousand miles away, and they kicked me out 'cause my 'great uncle' wasn't real, and he had never sent me a credit card or anything... Anyway, I offered to pay with these basket of muffins that I'd bought for a friend of mine, but they said 'no, that goes against High Winds Hotel policy. Meh!" And I said in reply, but I don't have a place to go. I had fallen asleep so I felt very groggy." Still not looking at any of her teammates, unaware of the being who picked her up and was controlling the steering wheel. She straightened up her skirt, and retied her boots, yet continued babbling on. "So, they still gave me the boot. And I tried looking for this one friend of mine who I had been looking for before I came to the hotel. Still no luck, I began to lose hope. But then this other friend of mind gave me a ride to—are we in New York? No...Philly?"

She looked up and saw the face expressions of each of her teammates. Wonder Girl cocked her eyebrow. "Speedy, you thought weed-head. I'm thinking we've just bargained for a crazy."

Beast Boy hugged Kole and said, "Wow, you had to go through all that?! I thought you'd be traveling to Japan by now."

Kole flushed in embarrassment as they both pulled back from the friendly hug they shared. "Yeah. Herald gave me a ride here. It was really nice of him to. He would've came along, but he had errands to run...um, excuse me, but I have to ask. Who's driving?"

Wonder Girl waved at Kole in the rear view mirror. "I'm the driver," she said. "I'm sure you know who I am."

Kole cocked and shook her head. "I'm sorry, really. I just can't recall ever meeting you..."

Wonder Girl's smile resembled the smile of a psycho serial killer. "I'm Wonder Girl."

"Oh..." Kole's eyes lit up knowingly. "Sorry if I'm wrong, but aren't you related to—"

"Wonder-freakin'-Woman...yes I most certainly am," she chided. "Oh, Hera, give me strength to restrain myself from wrecking this car out of frustration." She dramatically looked up and clasped her hands together. "Oh Hera!"

"Donna! Keep your hands on the wheel," shouted Roy. He steadied the car that had been about to tip over. "You don't need Hera, you need God!"

Wonder Girl put her hands on the wheel and continued to drive while mumbling things like, "princess Di, ooh, she's a hottie! Aren't you Wonder Woman's...go figure! I need a new name...Troia...I'm on a team but not credited enough..."

The radio have been turned down, Roy turned it up. It was a local Philly station despite them now driving out of nowhere. Slade's Warehouse was quite a long way.

Guitar strumming began to fill the car, a boy and girl were singing the beautiful words that came in:

There is a girl!

Who has a mystery to her!

I walk around in a daydream

'Cause she is messing with my mind...

Kole sat in between Wally and Beast Boy, the song relaxing her. She laid her head against Kid Flash's head in a friendship or comrade way. She didn't like him. But he was a friendly face. And she put her hand on Beast Boy's hands that had black gloves on them.

After a little more guitar strumming, came more words:

The girl's name is Kole

She shines, because she's a

One in a kind gem! (A one in a kind gem)

The be-named girl sat up abruptly. She was appalled. "What?!"

Beast Boy and Wally just laughed. Roy grinned. And Donna's eyes lit up and she said in a really girly voice, "Aw! You're someone's muse!"

Kole, you seem to make everything

Seem arctic, cold. Cruel like

The glass Alice looked through.

You wrong there buddy, my power deceives

You,

You cruel, fool.

Kole was trying to think of who could've ever written this song. This mellow sounding song.

You sure you aren't somebody that I used to know,

A guy who can control light, and where it goes.

Aren't doctors supposed to be nice and kind?

However, he was totally the opposite.

But she's cool 'cause...

She teared up at that line and buried her face into her hands.

The girl's name is Kole

She shines, because she's a

Wonder Girl got even more girly herself and started to cry. "Wow, someone really loves you. Who wrote you this song Kole?"

Ah, she's alright

Ah, she has a voice of an angel.

Ah, she shines bright... (Wait 2 seconds)

She's raking up that quiet boy's mind!

Kole began to smile brightly. This song really was sweet. Was she really 'raking' up Jericho's mind? Hearing Wonder Girl's question she replied, "Jericho did."

The girl's name is Kole

She shines, because she's a

Plus, that's why she's after a jaded shifty guy!

And her name is...Kole.

"I'm guessing, 'the jaded shifty guy' is you Beast Boy," Kid Flash said with a smirk while pointing at the changeling. "And I'm guessing a specific green eyed quiet dude is also jealous of you and Kole's relationship?"

Kole smiled meekly. "Kid Flash I honestly don't think this song is about me now that I think about it. Nor do I think Jericho sung it. He's mute."

The speedster gave her a "dur-duh" look and smirked. "Yeah, I necessarily didn't say he sang the song, and if he did who would the girl be? Anyway, I know he wrote the lyrics and composition. I just know it."

She didn't say anything. She just looked ahead at the dashboard window.

Beast Boy on the other hand came to a realisation.

The realisation was that the people him and Kole had been pursuing might actually return their feelings. No unrequited love! Yet he couldn't and wouldn't dwell on that any longer because before you know it Wonder Girl stopped the engine. The car was only a few yards away from a warehouse that resembled a factory.

Everybody in the car looked at each other and didn't know what to say at first, but eventually Beast Boy broke the silence. "Kid Flash I need for you to run around the warehouse to see if any doors are unlocked, if there are cameras and guard dogs, and if Slade is anywhere near. Come back to give us the okay." Kid Flash immediately got to it. He had in no seconds completed his task.

"No dogs! Yes, cameras but I dismantled those, and the front door is unlocked, and there's a stairway that leads up to roof, I think somewhere on the roof it leads up to a door."

Beast Boy nodded. "Okay. Now Wonder Girl and Speedy I need you to take the entrance on the roof. Kole and I will try the front door, and come in quietly. Got it?"

Everyone nodded and soon got to work.

Thunder and Lightning hadn't put their powers to use yet. There enhanced powers, if I may correct.

Although, they had practiced progressively!

Thunder was more powerful than ever. He'd managed to break the floor in half. And Lightning, he was filled with an adrenaline rush; his veins pulsing. He turned into his lightning form and went about the room 'playing.'

Slade was impressed. He awarded them treats at their expense, and even let them have a stray cat he was going to kill. But what the heck, he wasn't going to pay them. So there's their reward.

Thunder began to do push-ups on the push up bar in the corner of the gymnasium looking room, while Lightning ran on a tread mill.

"Master Slade!" Thunder yelled. "When are we to go outside and do real damage?!"

"Yeah," Lightning said eagerly, "we feel great. I could cut off all the power in the city, and the skyline wouldn't be so bright anymore!"

Slade laughed lamely and shrugged. "I don't know boys. But you put fourth more promise, then perhaps you'll be wreaking havoc outside sooner than later."

Thunder and Lightning made fist pumps in the air, showing their excitement.

Slade had been about to tell the brothers something when Beast Boy and Kole walked in. Kole was still wearing the outfit he had seen her in when she was captured by him along with her comrades. Beast Boy was clad in an all black outfit, with a beanie to go along with it. "Well, well," greeted Slade in that regular way of his. "Look what the cat has dragged in."

Thunder and Lightning got in their fighting stances and gave Kole and Beast Boy their iciest looks. "Who are these wahoos?" The brothers asked in unison. "Are they threatening you Wise One?"

Kole attempted to laugh that off and said to them. "Thunder and Lightning it's me Kole, and this is Beast Boy—she pointed at the shapeshifter—you know who we are."

Beast Boy furrowed his eyebrows who didn't seem to be intimidated. "Why don't they know who we are?" He said in a deadly tone, he looked at Slade. "Why does it look like they want to fight us?"

Slade shrugged. "You ask them yourself."

"Beast Boy!" Kole shouted, "Turn around!"

In a seconds notice, Thunder had been about to clobber Beast Boy in the spine but thanks to his natural reflexes he managed to turn around speedily and kick Thunder in both shins. That barely made a difference though, because now Kole and Beast Boy were dodging Thunder and Lightning's attacks while trying to also keep up with them. They began to realise the Storm Twins were stronger!

Wonder Girl flew down and with the best strength she could behold pulled Thunder away from Beast Boy, and Lightning away from Kole. But that intensified the brothers hunger for fighting even more. Kid Flash then sped into the room and punched Thunder and Lightning in the jaw, yet it barely effected them.

The brothers became even more hungry for fighting, and Slade could only sit back and watch with amusement. He knew the brothers would fight until they killed. It was all that simple.

Speedy was told by Wonder Girl to wait a little while before doing anything. With everyone fighting with evil Thunder And Lightning, and Slade just standing across from them, watching them fight like crazy geese Roy stood in the shadows on top of the stair steps, and centred the arrow in his bow and pointed it towards Slade.

1... 2... 3! Roy counted, and after, immediately launching!

Sly Slade of course seen it coming. But seriously, what's up with this guy? He's always aware of such things.

He dodged the arrows that hit the wall and then took something from his hand and rapidly launched it towards Speedy. Oh, man. He thought he was going to die, but gratefully and very easily Kid Flash saved his good friend. He suddenly (lightning speed had a lot to do with it) caught the two mechanical daggers with both hands and ricocheted them at Slade who jumped out of the way in the utmost time. Speedy (while shooting arrows) and Kid Flash, both chased Slade around the warehouse. The deceitful villain gracefully dodged the archer's attacks and distracted the speedster with many tricks of his own.

While that was occurring, their other teammates were trying successfully to defeat the storm bros who were under mind control.

Beast Boy punched Thunder multiple of times in the face and abdomen, and Beast Boy himself began to show scars and bruises that would need healing, and lots of it too. It only got harder.

Kole flipped and dodged a lot of Lightning's advances. When he would kick at her. She slid under his legs. When he'd tried to punch her. She would duck and come up from behind him and push him from behind. It was also getting harder for Kole.

Thunder was out for kill. He would stop dancing with Beast Boy. With the use of his powers Thunder punched the ground and it split.

Lightning, with his brother's same feelings, would make it harder for Little Green One, Diamond Girl, The Fast One(Kid Flash), The Strong Goddess(Wonder Girl), and The Arrow Head(Speedy). Lightning let his lightning power take use of the lights in the warehouse and the lights began to flicker.

Wonder Girl who'd been rubbing a big bruise on her arm from Thunder's powerful punch got off the ground and exclaimed, "What's Happening?!" She had slid on the ground from the seismic wave punch that had connected with the wall. Everyone had separated.

Roy cursed when he had centred on his target (Slade) but had lost balance and fell on the ground, and he couldn't even see. Damnit!

Kid Flash kept standing but he got wobbly legged and he could barely keep his balance.

Kole and Beast Boy on the other hand were hit. Thunder and Lightning finally managed to give them both a hard blow, their bodies hitting the floor with a echoing thump.

Thus Wonder Girl got off the ground and flew to the ceiling. She looked out at the pandemonium, and realised there would be much more of that when she saw Slade's clones, minions, and henchmen enter.

Kole sat up, her vision blurry, aw, man. She probably just earned herself a concussion. Lightning put his foot on her leg and put pressure on it. "Ow!" She screamed. She then looked up at one of her good friend's and saw that Lightning didn't even look the same anymore. He looked like a monster. She knew his face expression, it looked better on someone else.

Her father, she knew, had shared that same exact sinister look Lightning had in his eyes and having one of her good friends such as Lightning come accustomed to that merciless face expression made her feel even more frightened. And that scared her by all means. Her leg then began to sear, and tears sprung aguishly to her eyes. From her peripheral vision she saw that Thunder had Beast Boy in a choke hole, his eyes bulging out.

Kid Flash couldn't focus with the blinking lights going on in the room, along with Speedy who couldn't shoot his arrow perfectly. Wonder Girl made her way towards the henchmen and others, and soon was regretting the idea of taking off her bracelets that would've shielded her from those bullets that came at her.

Raven and Jinx were immediately in the scene. Raven used teleportation to send her and Jinx inside this warehouse, and boy did it take a butt load of energy. She was able to rest on the road trip, but never had the opportunity to meditate or have some of her nice herbal tea.

So, when a Slade-clone immediately charged at her she used her black aura magic and sent him flying across the room, along with twelve other's who looked just the same as him. Looking around she spotted Beast Boy, and Thunder! Thunder was choking the crap out of her beautiful beast. She would not let that happen. Even though she was lacking energy she still managed to use her powers and slam Thunder against the wall extremely hard. Like so hard, a normal human being would have died on impact. And it only took him to be slammed against a wall for Thunder to awake out of his daydream, mind-control, or delirium.

Raven then turned her attention over to Beast Boy and saw that he was fine, but he needed to be shook a bit to get his senses straight.

Meanwhile, Jinx did flips and jumps fighting off every minion and clone that got in her way. She finally got to her boyfriend who seemed perfectly fine, he healed easily. He was just knocking out a butt load of enemy Slade clones and stuff. She then spotted a dark haired girl who flimsily threw around garbage cans and tins, she kept saying something like, "Hera give me strength!"

Who was she? She looked familiar but Jinx still couldn't think of the girl's cognomen. Anyway, taking her mind off of the girl she spotted Lightning who was standing before a clammy Kole who looked terrified. She came up from behind him...

and WHAM! Wonder Girl threw a tin can at the brother and soon he was back to being Lightning. The real Lightning. Not the storm eyed monster who had the urge to smell a dead human being.

Jinx smiled and thought cooly, that was easy. But it soon got hard when she realised Slade's people started overpowering them and they were going to lose.

Too much, too much.

Jericho jumped on the other side of the split floor dodging a roundhouse kick from Jinx and tried to get to his father who was currently avoiding injury. Slade walked through all the fighting and smiled leisurely, this was all bliss for the guy.

Jericho didn't immediately charge at his dad because his gaze ventured over to Kole. This black haired lady who looked kind of familiar helped the clammy Kole on her feet, but she then went immediately went to fighting the henchmen and helping her fellow Titans fight leaving Kole on her own. He ran over to Kole and grabbed her arm. She hugged him like she was trying to hold on to him. "Jericho what's happening? I don't feel so good anymore! I feel like I am going to throw up! I feel Woo..zy!"

He was confused and caught off guard. How did she know it was him? He was still inside Jem's body.

Kole's eyes started to close slowly, but he had to carefully slap her cheek. "Kole," he said urgently, "you can't go to sleep, and you won't. Please don't close your eyes!"

Kole smiled, "please. I want to be an angel. I don't want to see here again..." She began to close her eyes again, but he stopped her again by touching her eyelids. It sort of felt cool to have the ability to talk again, but he wasn't using his own voice.

"No, no!" She said stubbornly. "I want to walk on clouds, and pet sheep. Look, I'll start counting, 1 sheep, 2 sheep, 3 sheep, 4 sheep..." And did she much more quickly, this time, close her eyes, and she went limp in Jericho's arms.

No! No! No! Maybe, she was unconscious. But her petite body was lifeless. It really seemed that way. No. Pretty-quirky-and his-everything -Kole would not die. That's why he kissed her.

Everyone stopped fighting at that moment and looked at the scene of one of Slade's corduroyed minions kissing Kole. No, he was not jamming his tongue down her throat or whatever, but he was...kissing her, and that wasn't cool. He looked like he was in his forties. Before anyone could do anything a figure began to phase out of the minion's body, and soon everyone realised that it was Jericho.

Slade had had his back turned looking out a small window from the corner of the room. He didn't feel or hear any fighting happening, so when he turned around you could see his eye change to a temperamental quality.

Joseph was here?!
