CHAPTER 23: The Last Chapter

SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT

[We still lay our scene in the common room. The three team leaders still stand behind podiums, and the nine faulty titans still sit in chairs before the crowd of people who gawk at them. Beast Boy, now Garfield, is deemed guilty. What happens now?]

Everyone who thought of Beast Boy not guilty or at fault didn't know how to take Superman's or Robin's proclamation. Chivalry it all was! (Note the sarcasm)

Bushido hadn't spoken, therefore when he dare did speak in the silence that overtook the room everyone was bewildered.

"Um," Bushido spoke, "I think you have misunderstood Beast Boy. I think he has reasons for his assumed treason."

Robin smiled with malice. His fist tightening on the podium. "Reasons aren't better explained than actions," the leader said with an edge in his voice. "Beast Boy signed himself to this team, he was to be a superhero. I have no choice but to expel him from this team. I won't apologise for my decision. But Doom Patrol you can choose wether or not you would like to welcome Beast Boy back into your team."

Superman smiled leisurely while slamming his gavel down. "I believe this meeting is adjourned."

Everyone began to stand up and talk. Everything started to become an uproar and eventually did yelling began to come about. Some chose to be neutral about this whole ordeal, some chose to be satisfied about the conclusion, and others wanted to make a stand. Yet, they couldn't speak up against Robin or he would blow up.

Garfield and Kole looked at each other with perplexity and blinked.

"What has happened?" Wonder Girl asked. It sounded like she was saying "uh-oh."

Kid Flash and Roy saw their former mentors walking towards them. They would have been lying if they said they weren't scared if you'd asked them how they felt at that moment.

Jinx stood up and looked amongst the crowd. Searching for Raven and Jericho, to see if they would speak out against such injustice, but they were no where to be seen amongst the arguing superheroes.

"Little Blond One and Diamond Girl," Thunder said, "perhaps we should take you to your rooms."

"Wait," Garfield murmured staring off into space, "I gotta to talk to some old comrades of mine. You guys go to my room. I will catch up with you guys in a little bit."

The storm brothers nodded but Kole looked longingly at Garfield, for she feared that she would be felt upon the wrath of much people. "Gar y-ya you don't need me to come with you?!"

He shook his head and walked away from her and the brothers.

Amongst the crowd of people he walked to where Elasti-girl, Mento, Robot Man, and Negative Man stood. They didn't particularly have much to say.

Yet, just know they didn't find him guilty to the point where they wouldn't let him rejoin the team. Then again, why had he ever left or been kicked out the Doom Patrol? That my friend remains a mystery.

Meanwhile, Raven and Jericho were alone in the bedroom that belonged to the Mage herself. They sat criss cross applesauce, across from each other.

"Jericho," Raven said quietly, "You were a good boyfriend. But I think you're fit for someone else."

Jericho drummed his fingers at his chin and looked up at the ceiling. She knew he was just trying to find his words.

He said something using his hands. It was, You are fit for someone else too. One who will balance you out. You were a good girl friend, but, I do not want to be the reason for not letting you proclaim your love for Beast Boy.

She gave Jericho a ghostly grin and nodded in confirmation. "I think he'd like to go by Garfield now."

Did you come up with the name? There was bemusement in Jericho's eyes.

"No, but I know his real name, and he looks like a Garfield. Not a Beast Boy."

Raven and Jericho got up from the ground and together they both walked out the bedroom and just then was Thunder and Lightning escorting Kole. She wore a look of distress and fear, but her face lit up at the sight of Jericho. His face did the same.

Raven looked at Thunder and Lightning. "Where's Garfield?" She asked them calmly.

Thunder and Lightning first looked at each other, using telekinesis. After exchanging a couple words in thought Lighting replied. "Little Blond One said he were to go and exchange a couple words with old friends or comrades."

Raven felt her nervousness go down. Despite the fact that Robin exiled him, maybe she could do something, maybe she could have Robin change his mind.

She ran to the common room, but when running to the common room she bumped into Garfield. He kind of on instinct took ahold of both of her arms steadying her. He didn't want her to fall or anything. He gave her a reassuring smile. She looked at him shyly.

Garfield teared up only for a second when looking away from her and then did he give her a hug. Sure the lights flickered, and a wall split but that didn't matter. What mattered right now for Raven was that the boy she felt her heart belonged to was giving her a hug that said a lot.

He then stopped hugging her and walked past. She followed him and it was all the way to his bedroom where she helped him pack and she wiped the one tear that ran down his cheek and smiled for him. She smiled prettily for him. A smile that said, "I'll miss you." Even though he didn't know that.

Garfield held the kind of exterior that said I'm okay with how things are now. Seriously, I am. Just know that I'll be back.

When she took out the last item from his closet she saw that it was a green hoody. She looked over to Garfield to see if he noticed her take out the hoody, but he seemed to be focused on getting items from the desk— that was settled in the corner of his room. Therefore, she took the green hoody from the hangar and immediately stuck it under the bunk bed. She would get it later when he'd been and left.

Cyborg and Starfire said their goodbyes to Garfield and gave him something to remind him of them. Cyborg gave him a stankball and a flash drive, and Starfire gave him one of her last bone crushing hugs and Silkie. "If you are ever feeling of the lonely," the alien princess said genuinely, "Silkie will indeed keep you the company."

Garfield realized how much time he hadn't spent with his team. But I guess that is how things became and there had been no stopping it.

They say when you leave a home and you come back to it, the homeyness would've been and gone like leaves from trees in the winter and the sun at dusk. Apparently that would be so.

Robin didn't make eye contact with him nor did he say goodbye, and Garfield was okay with that. Really, he was. Everyone Titan in the room, including every JLA member gave him looks of pity, alarm, sad smiles, and stone glares.

Jinx cried into Argent's shoulder. (It would've been Kid Flash, yet, remember. He was on punishment.).

Wonder Girl gave Garfield a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder and one of her beautiful signature smiles.

Bushido gave him a respectful bow.

Speedy was on punishment too, so he'd been out of the scene.

Thunder and Lightning shook their heads and crossed their arms. They both knew very well that this never shoud have happened to Little Blond One, but it did.

Jericho and Kole, with Gnarrk following behind, went off somewhere. Maybe to Kole and Gnarrk's residence.

Robotman took one of Beast Boy's bags and hauled it off to the vehicle the Doom Patrol rode in. Mento gave a stern nod to everyone who looked his way and followed Robotman out the door, Rita and Negative man following behind.

Garfield didn't know where Raven had gone. He kept saying to himself this wasn't goodbye.

-/-/-

Raven hugged the green hoody to herself and stared into space sitting criss-cross apple sauce on her bed. No candles were lit. No spells were performed. No mantra was repeated. Her soul only wept.

After all of the escapades and mischief, her and Beast Boy never got to be together? Did stars cross for them? Was that all it was?

This was not fair.

Her emoticlones were roaring inside of her. Telling her there was an opportunity for escape. But how so?

She didn't want to be at this tower any longer, therefore she teleported to Kole's residence.

When she entered the cave-like space she didn't see anyone. But then suddenly who stood in front of her was a woman who Kole bear quite a resemblance to. "Uh, who are you?" Raven asked bluntly, raising an eyebrow. She crossed her arms.

The woman laughed and mimicked Raven. She raised her eyebrows and crossed her arms too. "Why, I am Marilyn Weathers. Kole's mother. Wife of a late phony, whose name I dare not mention." She then laughed and turned around walking to a room. She beckoned with one movement of her hand for Raven to follow. Raven did.

"So, whose girl are you?" Marilyn asked inquiringly, "are you the shape-shifters? One of the storm brothers? Or the speedsters, or archers?"

Raven flushed, and replied respectively yet timidly, "the shape-shifters."

"Now, has his appearance changed like my daughters?"

"Yes."

"My word, I thought that could never happen..."

Marilyn and Raven entered where Kole and Jericho were. They had been slow dancing to a song from the beat box that sat on the bar counter.

Kole smiled when she saw who it was. "Raven!" She ran over to her. "Is Gar here? Robin really didn't kick him out, did he?"

Raven nodded slowly. "Yeah, our poor deluded leader did kick Garfield out! He made him join his former team!" Now, the purple haired girl had yelled this, and you know when she yells and is at a temper something breaks, or combust. The boom box was the one thing to do so.

"I can't comprehend why Robin would do that to him," Raven went on. She put her hands to her face, trying not to cry. "Why? Kole, were you and Garfield really dating?"

Kole got red in the face out of embarrassment. Raven looked at her, expecting an answer. "Well," Kole looked at Jericho than back to Raven. "Honestly, we fake dated just to get back at you both."

Raven and Jericho both held face expressions of alarm.

"You're kidding," Raven said in annoyance. "Kole, you wouldn't do that."

Kole shook her head. "Apparently, I am not kidding." She said this with regret and sincerity. When she saw Jericho's face and looked into his eyes she saw that there was a sadness in them that would never go away because of the death of his infamous father and the fate of brutality.

Raven stormed out of the room.

-/-/-/-

Garfield took out the last of his things in his suitcase and looked about the room. Nothing much had changed. Rita and everyone had kept their promise, that they would never make an apparent adjustment or change to his room when he'd been outed of the team.

He smiled at the old posters of superheroes and such he'd put up on the wall. He now realized how long it'd been since then.

He got into some of his old pajamas that were a tad small on him, but they would do and walked over to the old record player that sat against the wall. He looked at the record, it was of an old Ella Fitzgerald song.

Garfield just stood there for a couple minutes listening to the music. It made him feel happy. Maybe he wouldn't think of how he wasn't a necessary asset of the team, maybe he wouldn't think of how his heart wept and longed for amity, satisfaction, and belonging... He wouldn't think of...

"What are you doing here?" He then asked the figure that stood behind him. "You should be back at the tower where you belong. You could get in trouble."

When her eyes changed emotion apparently they turned to the colour of a colour he couldn't seem to decipher. "You are despicable Garfield," she said to him in a fickle tone of voice. "All this time you made it seem like you were in love with Kole, albeit when it could've been me?!" She shouted this, and therefore the only window in the room broke. "How much of a hormonal teen do you want me to seem like?!"

Garfield turned around shook his head and attempted a smile. "Raven, keep it down, my teammates might hear you."

"I'm not your teammate anymore?" Raven asked. "Am I your friend? Am I a mere acquaintance? What am I to you Garfield? What was I ever to you?" And this is when she wept.

Garfield laughed and walked over to her. Taking ahold of both of her hands that had come to her face, he looked into her eyes. "You were at first an acquaintance, second a friend, and now... My second half."

Mento said he wouldn't mess with him until tomorrow morning, he would leave him to get settled. Wasn't Garfield grateful for that? He sure was. All night as that same old song played on the record Raven and him just talked and fixed the window, and maybe kissed a little bit... Okay, a lot. But come tomorrow morning Robot Man would find Raven and Garfield sitting on the floor, their backs against the bed asleep with their hands intertwined. Silkie resting between them.

THE END?

Wait, I have left things out.

- Garfield (Beast Boy) wasn't the only one given the boot, Jericho had been as well. Nothing goes overlooked when you're the son of Slade.

- KOLE'S SONG blew up on airplay and went platinum and is now a hit song for the now famous band Striped Flag.

- Kole and Jericho together reside somewhere in Europe living normal lives. Marilyn and Gnarrk are living with the couple of course.

- Raven left the Titans.

- Garfield decided not to stick with the Doom Patrol, and his occupation is now acting.

- Raven now dons a holo ring and works at that favorite cafe of hers. She lives with Garfield in a nice apartment uptown.

Sunglasses were still worn at night.

Reed has left the building.

THE END

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
