Chapter Twelve: Anyone who had a heart.
The doctor came out the hospital room, where Jamie laid in and was about to tell his parents the condition.
"Mr. Evans and Ms. James your son's in critical condition, it's very serious. He has a broken arm, leg and rib. A collapsed lung and a little swelling to his brain. If we don't operate now he could possibly die."
"So if he has the operation will everything be okay with him afterwards?" Haley asked sniffling as she tried to hold back her tears.
"We really don't know Ms. James, it's a 50/50 chance."
"Thanks doctor." Clay said softly.
Nathan sat in his brother and sister-in laws house asking for advice about Haley.
"YOU ASSHOLE! DONT YOU THINK SHE'S BEEN THOUGH ENOUGH OVER THE LAST YEAR, HUH? DEALING WITH HER FATHERS DEATH, RAISING HER SON ALONE WHICH IS NOW LYING IN A HOSPTAIL BED BECAUSE CLAY DOESNT KNOW HOW TO RAISE A FIVE YEAR OLD AND ON TOP OF THAT MY BROTHER CHEATS ON HIS GIRLFRIEND." Lucas angrily shouted at him.
Brooke went to sit next to Nathan on the couch.
"Look I'm not gonna yell at you the way Luke did. But I'm very upset, and disappointed in you, what you did to Haley was unacceptable. You know she loves you, but I'm not gonna tell you that you didn't screw up; you did. What you screwed up on was not telling Haley the moment it happened. If you had been honest from the start, none of this would've happened," Brooke said.
He nodded. "I know. I messed up; this is all my fault. But I don't want this to ruin our whole relationship. What should I do to prove to her that I made a mistake, and I love her?"
"Well, she's probably feeling upset right now and disappointed that the man she loved cheated on her, but what is she supposed to do about it.."
Nathan sighed sadly. "Thanks, Brooke You didn't need to rub that in."
"You wanted my honest opinion! Haley is going to be upset, which means you really need to articulate how much you love her and care about her. You need to tell her how much you appreciate her presence in your life and how much you need her. Girls want to hear those things. She won't leave you. But if you want things to be the same as they were, you need to talk to her about this, because that's what mature adults do. You can't just push it under the rug."
Nathan sighed, but nodded acceptingly. He contemplated some grand gesture of love, so Haley would know just how much he cared about her.
Brooke took a sip of her coffee as she watched him think. She smiled thinking of all the creative, fun ways Nathan could (and probably would) apologize.
And that soon made her think of something else.
"Do I need to do anything else, Doctor Brooke?" he asked playfully.
"Buy Hales flowers, because she deserves them, and if you're looking to apologize, that will certainly soften her up a bit, though you make her soften up a lot already," Brooke teased.
Nathan nodded with a smile. He was suddenly feeling a lot better about this whole thing
"Oh and tell her why you love her? What made you fall in love with her, and explain your mistake to her. And I know she's gonna ask you if you love her or in love with her, because those are two different scenarios." Brooke told him
"Okay thanks."
Maybe things with Haley would work out, and there would be no need to repair his heart once more.
Atleast he hoped it would.
Peyton sat in the divorce attorney office, not wanting to sign the divorce papers that Julian so fondly gave her, it was like a slap in the face.
"So Mr. Baker are you sure you want to end your 5 year marriage to Ms. Sawyer." Steve the divorc attorney spoke.
As much as this killed Julian he know this what he needed to do.
"Uh, yes. This is what I want to do."
"Ms. Sawyer, you?"
"Um… Er.. I'm sorry I can't do this." She said walking out.
"Peyton—"
—"No, I should have seen this coming! You wanted to divorce me all along. Why is that huh?"
"No that's no what I want Peyton."
"Really um okay what about the when Steve said about if you wanted to divorce me and you said Yes. It seems to me like a rash decision?"
"Whatever Peyton."
Haley entered her home after a long day at the hosptail, and she didn't even care how she looked. She wore Nathan's old Ravens hooded sweater and a pair of track pants.
She went to the kitchen and saw a Bouquet of red roses on the table in a vase. She read the card that was in the bouquet.
Haley, I love you I screwed up big time, and believe me it kill's me. I know this these flowers aren't gonna fix anything but maybe this words will. You are my entire world, I can't see my life without you in it. What do you say meet me at Crystal beach at 2? I have more to say.
Haley changed her outfit into something more comfortable she wore a aqua silky tank top, a knit beige cardigan and some short blue shorts. She grabbed her flip flops and left to met Nathan.
She found Nathan
"Were they just thoughts of a drunken man who missed his ex-fiancée or were they thoughts of a guy who said I was his entire world?"
Haley was geniunely worried what his answer might be. They had grown apart in the last few weeks. She didn't know what to do.
"I'd had a drink that night but it was only to give me the courage to tell you that I still love you the same way I loved you when we said goodbye at the airport. You can't tell me you don't fell the same way. Because I know deep down Hales you still do. I never meant to hurt you."
"It doesn't matter Nathan, because in the end it hurts just the same."
"Hey, look I know we broke up Haley I miss you. I love you okay. I'm sorry for what I did. I can why any guy would fall in love with you. And I know I fucked up, but Haley please give me another chance. I didn't come here to rehash the past. I was reminded today in a roundabout way that the most perfect act of love is sacrifice. It's what Keith did for Karen; burying his feelings for her for all those years so he could be a good friend. I love you Hales. And I think I have since the first moment we locked eyes and it is going to suck but if what you want is for me to let go then I'm gonna do it. Be happy Hales. I want that with all my heart. I'll always be here for you okay." he left he kissed her cheek.
"Nathan wait," he turned around to face Haley. "On the card what you said, did you mean it?"
"Every word. I love you."
"You love me or are you in Love with me because those are to different ideas."
"In love with you, and I guess I'be always been. I love being with you, you brighten up my day. I love coming home to you knowing that you were mine, I love your smile your laugh, the way you challenge me, the way you love me and they way you see me, while others don't you see though my facade. Those are the reason why I love you there is more, but it would take a whole decade to tell you how much I love you. And that's why I keep screwing up, because I'm so in love with you, that it makes me do stupid things sometimes."
"I keep giving you chances Nathan and you keep screwing them up. I keep thinking that maybe just once you changed. But it seems to me that you can't change a person no matter how hard you try. You know why you like a guy who isn't right for you, you fall anyway thinking he might be different. It's gonna take a while for me to process this and forgive you, till then I'm still pissed. I have to go see Jamie."
"Do you miss me and love me still Hales?"
"Of course I do, I just can't forgive you for this."
She took her flip flops and she walked away in the cold sand Leaving Nathan by him self.
Peyton signed the papers and was given a few days to give her engagement ring and wedding band back to Julian.
"This is what you wanted well here you go!"
She angrily left.
Haley was at home after checking on Jamie in the hospital as the doctors told her she couldn't stay for the operation.
She went upstairs as she changed her clothes and put her hair up in a high ponytail.
She took a deep breath as she looked at herself. Her thoughts wandered as she thought of mirrors, how they looked into different dimensions, and parallels they manifested in her life.
Her reverie was broken when there was a knock at the door.
She opened it up and was shocked as she saw Clay standing before her. She furrowed her eyebrows, confusion showing itself all across her face.
"Clay? What are you doing here?" she asked, truly muddled.
"I wanted to talk to you, Hales," he said.
Haley reluctantly allowed him in the house. She watched him uncomfortably.
"Clay, I don't want to play games. I already told you everything about Jamie's condition at the hospital. What do you want?" she asked, calmly, but clearly lacking much patience.
He sighed. "I just keep thinking so much about our son. And it just keeps me thinking of what could've been for the two of us," he said slowly.
She raised an eyebrow. "What are you saying?" she inquired anxiously.
"I keep thinking about our son and…it makes me want a child."
Haley continued to look at him with looks of confusion.
"Haley…I want to have a child together."
It took her a moment to process that statement. Finally, when it went through her mind, she stared at him, wide-eyed.
"What?"
He sighed again. "Thinking about him all the time makes me want a child. And you're the only person I really ever considered having a child with, ever," he said.
She shook her head, flustered. "So let me get this straight. You're telling me that you want a baby with me when you have Sara so I can have a child with you, who cheated on me all throughout our engagement," she recapped. "No way! Are you out of your freaking mind?"
"Or for us to be together. I just want to have a child with you," he said
Haley shook her head incessantly. "I think you must be on something, Clay. There's no way in hell that I'm going to have a baby with you," she said before she led him out the door and closed it behind him.
Brooke sat in her living room with Lucas.
"I hope Jamie's okay, you know? And things between Haley and Nathan aren't so tense."
"Yeah, but Nathan was being a dick, and cheating on her while he was in Seattle."
"Yeah, but you could have spoken to him softly instead of yelling, remind me never to let you leave Tree Hill." Brooke said.
"I love you, but we have to put our kids to bed, stop being stressed. Things will turn out for the best I promise you. It's Nathan and Haley, no one could come between there endless love, everyone knows that."
"Yeah okay."
Nathan heard a knock on his apartment door, he opened it and stood there was his worst nightmare.
"Hey."
"Why are you here, and what do you want?" He asked.
