Chapter 12: Voices in My Head

JASON

Jason smiled.

"You sure took your time!" he joked as he grabbed the first rung of the ladder. He moved to the side as he gestured towards the ladder with his free hand. "Ladies first," he prompted Piper. Piper shot him a playful smile and Jason felt his brain turn to mush. Nevertheless, she grabbed the rung and began to climb with Jason following right behind her. Looking down, he watched the island grow smaller and smaller as the ship ascended into the sky. When he and Piper finally were back on the deck, they were greeted warmly by the others.

"We were worried about you!" Annabeth said as she embraced Piper in a hug. Leo and Percy both gave Jason pats on the back while asking what had happened to them. Jason sighed and began to tell their story.

FRANK

Frank was surprised. He had heard stories about Echidna and knew that it was no easy feat to defeat the mother of all monsters. He heard Percy whistle.

"I ran into her once. She's tough and nasty. Great job man!" he heard the son of Poseidon say. Frank offered a nod. Jason laughed and sat down on the deck. He looked pretty tired and Piper did too. Frowning, Frank took a closer look at Piper. There was a bandage on her arm.

"Piper, what happened to your arm?" he asked. Piper glanced towards the wound and rubbed the bandage.

"One of Echidna's attacks hit me. That's all," she said. Hazel helped her up.

"It's not 'that's all'. We need to clean the wound and you both look like you could use some ambrosia and nectar." Frank watched as she led the couple down into the dining room.

HAZEL

Hazel walked quickly. She heard Piper and Jason's footsteps behind her so she wasn't worried about them passing out before getting to the medical bay. She had learned about Echidna in her classes back at the First Legion and she knew that wounds from her were not to be taken lightly. She wanted to get those two treated as soon as possible. She all but threw open the door when she reached the infirmary.

She was greeted with an unpleasant surprise. She and the others had cleaned up the medical room, or at least tried to, before receiving the SOS message from Jason and Piper. Now, the room was a mess again, but strangely enough, there was almost nothing on the floor. Cupboards were broken off their hinges and drawers were out of place but the room's supplies were nowhere to be seen. The gears clicked when she finally realised with shock that they had been robbed right under their noses. She turned around to meet the equally shocked gazes of Piper and Jason.

"Sorry guys. Maybe there's some spare ambrosia and nectar somewhere else," she tried as she made her way out the door. Jason clasped onto her shoulder.

"Wait, Hazel. This is important. We should let the others know that the medical supplies are gone. Our injuries can wait a bit longer," he said. Hazel shook her head.

"No. You might not remember Jason, but wounds delivered by Echidna are dangerous. Besides, I have ambrosia in my barrack. I'll just grab it and come back really quick," she promised as she took off for her room, leaving an upset Jason and an uncomfortable Piper.

Hazel came running back after a few minutes. In her hands was a plastic bag filled with crushed ambrosia. Slowing to a halt, she offered the bag to the two of them embarrassedly.

"I know it's not much. But this is all I could find. It got crushed in my bag," she apologised. Piper gratefully took the bag from her.

"It's ok, Hazel, we don't mind it being crushed. It's more than enough," she said as she grabbed a handful and popped it into her mouth. She handed the bag over to Jason who did the same thing.

"Thanks," he said simply after swallowing. Piper thanked her as well and she nodded.

"Now we need to tell the others about what happened."

ANNABETH

Annabeth was shocked to say the least. First it was Jason and Piper going missing and now it was the medical equipment. Maybe the infirmary was haunted. She mentally hit herself. No, there was a logical explanation for all of this. Maybe a wandering shade came in and stole them. No, that was ridiculous. But what other explanation was there?

Maybe it was one of your friends, a voice whispered. Strangely, it wasn't her own voice but she didn't heed that at the time. That's ridiculous, she thought. But what other explanation is there? the voice countered. The only people onboard this ship are you and your friends. It would be impossible for anything else to get onboard without one of you noticing. Annabeth's brow furrowed. As much as she hated to admit it, the voice had a point. But, she couldn't just start accusing her friends left and right. Wait, the voice cooed. Wait and catch one of them in the act. Annabeth grunted. She really couldn't do anything else. She jolted when she felt a hand on hers and looked up to see Percy looking down at her with concerned eyes.

"You ok?" he asked. Annabeth opened her mouth to tell him about her suspicions but the voice in her head was telling her otherwise. Somewhat reluctantly, she closed her mouth and smiled instead.

"Yeah. Fine," she said. Percy's brow furrowed. Annabeth felt her heart drop to her stomach. She hated lying to Percy but the voice had given reasonable advice so far; there was no reason not to trust it again. Planting a chaste kiss on his forehead, she stood up from where she was sitting. Waving goodbye to Percy, she went back to her barrack. She flopped onto her bed. What was the voice in her head? Where did it come from? There were too many unanswered questions. Closing her eyes, Annabeth fell into a fitful sleep, her mind plagued with too many variables and too much room for error.
