"Ouch," Watson murmured in sympathy, handing Holmes a handkerchief he pulled from his cuff. "What happened this time?"

Holmes wearily slumped back in his fireside chair, pressing Watson's offering to a superficial – but painful – cut over his right eye. "I followed our culprit to his hideaway – a dock landing, as we surmised – but didn't ensure that no one saw me. They got in a few good blows before I was away."

Watson looked thoughtfully at him, then smiled slightly. "I see we're agreed then?"

Holmes opened his eyes to give a wry, acquiescing glance. "From now on we go together."
