I only just realized how ironic this is in sequence with the last chapter... Oh well, this is where it belongs.

Summary: It's not too far off to suspect Watson might have - twisted details just a little bit in "The Final Problem." And then there's the three unrecorded years... A drabble in 221B format.

Foiled

"Watson, would you care to join me on holiday?"

I eyed him suspiciously, wary of his intentions. He had never shown much interest in vacationing in the past… "And just what do you mean by that, my dear fellow?"

"There have been no less than seventeen attempts against your life during my absence, Watson, only four of which the London constabulary is aware, and I only number those taking place after they were assured your partnership with me had most certainly terminated. Of the remaining thirteen, eleven you managed to thwart completely unaware of the fact and the other two failed by happenstance." Holmes placed his notes carefully back on the mantle and, turning to meet my shocked gaze, added simply, "In all sincerity, Watson, I would feel much more peace of mind were I to have you with me and hopefully out of the line of fire."

"What are you suggesting?"

"Just this – Mycroft has recently informed me that Colonel Moriarty, now convinced you were in league with me all along, has determined to have his revenge upon our persons. Once coupled with this information," he gestured toward the mantle, "I believe we are due for a vacation, don't you?"

I let out a heavy sigh. "When do we leave?"

Never had I seen him give a smile so broad.
