Mycroft Holmes frowned as he composed the telegram. Doctor Watson was not doing well – if the current lack of new stories in the Strand, despite the plethora of case-notes he had to draw on, was any indication, Watson was trying to distance himself until he could regain control.
The elder Holmes wrote, UNDERSTOOD SH STOP JW NOT WELL STOP SHOULD I INFORM HIM OF THE FACTS STOP MH.
It was several weeks before he received a reply, but the very nature of its wording told Mycroft how his own brother must be suffering.
I WILL TELL HIM MYSELF STOP SH.
