Author's Note: So this chapter is kinda short. But I have so many ideas for things to come and I'm really excited to get them out! Finals are looming in the near future (two weeks!) so the next update could either be today or it could be two to three weeks from now. Either way, I hope you guys are having a great holiday season! If you could send your thoughts to Washington and Gifford Illinois. They're the towns just north of me that were flattened by tornadoes a couple weeks ago. PS: a little language in this chapter.
"I'm gonna go change and call my mom." I said. Kurt and I had already explained to Burt and Carole why we were so late. We had been sitting down stairs with them for a while when I checked the clock again, 4 o'clock.
I dashed into my room and stripped off my suit and hung it back up. I changed into jeans and a t-shirt and removed my contacts. I flopped on the bed and push my glasses up the bridge of my nose. I reached of my phone and dialed my mom's phone. No answer. I stopped for a moment; my thumb hovered over another contact. I tapped the screen and waited for my mother to answer the land line. (Yes we still had a land line.) But she didn't, he did.
"Hello."
My throat went dry and my body tensed up.
"Hello? Who is this?"
I took a deep breath and let it our slowly. "Is mama there?" I asked shakily.
"Blaine?" he hissed.
"Yes sir."
"Don't you ever call here again you little faggot." He shouted.
Then the line went dead. My phone dropped onto my bed. My hands were shaking severely and my breathing was getting labored. I grabbed my inhaler off the nightstand and took a fairly large does. "You're okay Blaine. You're okay, you're okay." I whispered to myself. I reached for my vibrating phone and looked at the screen. Call from mom.
"Hello?" I choked out.
"Blaine, are you having an attack?" mom asked.
"Yeah" I gasped.
"In and out Blaine. You know how to do this, in for three out for three. One two three, one two three. Do you have your inhaler?"
"Yes." I whispered.
"Use it Blaine. Focus on breathing. Counts of three Blainers."
I could feel my chest start to relax and my lungs start to fill with oxygen. I took one more does and sighed.
"I'm okay now." I choked out.
"Thank God. Are you okay? Do you enough meds?"
"Yeah I'm good, I've got enough meds."
"What triggered it? Do you know?" mom whispered.
"Dad, I-I called the house phone because you didn't pick up and he answered. I-it was stupid for me to do that mom, I'm sorry."
"Oh Blainey. God I'm so sorry I didn't pick up. I promise, from now on I will. What did you need?"
"Um, w-we went to church today, me and Kurt. And it's okay for us to be there. W-we held hands and everything Ma."
The line was quiet. "Ma?"
"That's fantastic Blaine.
"H-how are you? I haven't talked to you in a while." I asked softly.
"I'm okay. Things with your father are very tense. I haven't spoken to him, I've yelled at him once or twice, but he's kept his distance."
"I'm sorry that I messed things up Ma."
"No Blainers. You did nothing wrong. Things with your father hadn't been real great for a while really."
I didn't say anything for a moment. "How's the football team doing?" I asked wanting to change the subject.
"They're terrible. I nobody's made a field goal this year. I don't think they've scored but 4 or 5 touchdowns." she laughed.
"Seriously, no field goals? Who's kicking?"
"Some little freshman. New to town. Nobody else wanted the job; they said it didn't feel right coach said.
"You talked to Coach?" I asked, shocked.
"Um yeah, it was supposed to be a surprise, but um you should be getting a package in the mail soon."
I could feel her smiling though the phone. "Thank you. I don't care what it is, thank you."
"I made a deal with him though; you can't have it till Christmas."
"Why not?" I jumped.
"That's what he said. He's the one that packaged it up. I imagine there's a lesson involved."
"It better take its time. Or I'm gonna have to put it in the basement." I laughed.
"I gotta go Blainers. Call me again soon though. Let me know when your football games are I wanna keep my eyes out for scores."
"Will do Ma. Love you." I whispered.
"I love you too Blainey Bear."
Then the line was dead. I set my phone on the night stand and walked down the stairs to the living room. "Hey dude." Finn said from the recliner. Burt and Carole were on the bigger cough and Kurt was sitting by himself on the loveseat. I nodded a hello and sat with my knees up to my chest next to Kurt. He peck a kiss on my cheek, I glanced over smiled softly at him.
One week later.
"So, your story?" Kurt asked. We were sitting at the same table as last week with Franklin and Will. They looked at each other, "You start." Will said looking at Frankie.
"We actually lived in the same town growing up, a little nowhere town in Idaho. But we didn't know each other real well. It wasn't until I came back from Korea that we met. Will was working with the Red Cross, caring for wounded vets. When I was over there I lost my leg, and Will refused to leave me once I got home. He helped he get used to using a wheel chair and my crutches once I got my strength back. Then, I'm not really sure what happened. We got closer, and closer." Frankie squeezed Will's had a smiled. "He was a big baby, had to have me there all the time. I think he just wanted to spend more time with me." Will laughed.
"My parents had been dead for a few years and Frankie's daddy left him and his mama when Frankie was little. So we didn't have a lot of people to work around." Will explained. "Mama never was quite all there to begin with." Franklin sighed. "Then at some point we discovered that there was something more between us. It grew and grew and eventually we ended up kissing, and we never stopped."
"Will came up will some nonsense about wanting to work with the Red Cross in New York City, and they bought it. He moved out there and got settled in and I followed a month later when I got my own crutches and chair. It was a tiny place. I actually couldn't use my chair because it was so cramped." Frankie laughed. "We lived there for till about 20 years ago. 1990 we moved to Chicago, Frankie had been dreaming of getting his prosthetic leg since the 80's and Chicago was the best place to do it. So we did. 1991 He had a new leg and we had a new home."
"Now at 82 and 85 we're still kicking and doing alright. No grandbabies, no kids, but that's okay. We love each other." Frankie smiled and pecked Will on the cheek. "Awww." Kurt sighed. "You two are adorable." he sighed. They just laughed and shook their heads. "Thank you Frankie, for serving our country. It may not have been your choice, but thank you." I smiled. "I was the first in line for the Draft Blaine. You couldn't have stopped me from going if you tried." he chuckled and nudged my arm like old people do.
"Wait if you're 82 and first in line you would have had to lie about your age. To register for the draft you had to 18." I smiled. "I did lie. I told them I was 19. Most boys were telling them they were 18, but one town couldn't have that many 18 year olds. Told 'em I was 19 and they didn't bat an eye." Frankie laughed. We all laughed.
"We gotta get goin' Willie; we got our lunch date with Lavinia." Franklin said pulling on his coat. Frankie helped Will put on him jacket and wrapped a scarf loving around William's neck.
They said good bye and slowly walked up the stairs automatically reached for each other's hands.
I reached down and grabbed Kurt's hand and squeezed it. "I love you Kurt." I smiled and kissed his forehead. "Love you too honey." He grinned.
