"Let's go babe, we're gonna be late for glee." I pestered. Kurt was fixing his hair in his locker mirror between classes. Glee was our last class of the day and Mr. Shue obviously wouldn't care if we were late but I still didn't like to be. "Fine, let's go." Kurt said shutting his locker. We turned the corner and before I could react my shoulder slammed into a set of lockers.
"Blaine!" Kurt gasped. I felt my elbow hit sharply against the metal lock. I cursed under my breath and I looked down the hall to see a bright red letter man jacket turning the corner was had just come around. "Are you okay?" Kurt asked kneeling before me. "I'm fine Kurt. Let's just get to rehearsal." I said standing up and grabbing Kurt's hand. We walked into the choir room just as the bell rang.
"Alright guys, take your seats." Mr. Shue said as we all settled in. He grabbed a marker off the piano and started to write on the white board. "Home." he said turning back to us. "With Thanksgiving being next week I want to do a special lesson. Each of you will choose a song of your choice and sing it to us. Either in here or on the stage. You can play and instrument, have somebody else play, or just do it a cappella. But the song has to do with home. Whether it be where you live now or where you were born and raised. You have to perform before we leave Wednesday." The room erupted with people sharing ideas and asking others to play for them.
"Hey. Hey,hey." Mr. Shue hushed. "Now some rules. Only one song per person and it has to be a solo. The songs must obviously be appropriate, Puck." He said glancing in Noah's direction. Puck just rolled his eyes. We all laughed. "Okay, I'll give you the hour to brainstorm and practice if you want to." Mr. Shue said and walked off to his office.
"Sooooo?" Kurt drew out. "So what?" I laughed. "What are you going to sing?" Kurt smiled. I leaned back and sighed. "I don't know. But I'm not going to tell you when I do." I grinned. "Why not? I'm your boyfriend. You should tell me!" Kurt gasped. "Nope, its gonna be a surprise." I laughed. Kurt spent the rest of the hour badgering me about what I was going to sing.
"Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaasseee? I can't read what you're playing!"Kurt whined. We were sitting up in my room after Finn and I had gotten home from football practice. Kurt was lying at the foot of my bed and I was sitting cross legged with my guitar. I had a folder of tab music in front of me working on my song. I had picked my song during football practice when I was listening to my iPod while lifting. I had completely forgotten about this song until it came up.
"I know you can't read tab that's why I'm letting you stay in here." I laughed. Kurt swatted at my hands and groaned. "Please tell me Blaine? I'll tell you what I'm going to sing." he bartered. "You can tell me but I still won't tell you." I said studying my music charts. "I don't like you right now." Kurt grumped. "Yup love you too babe." I said not looking up from my music.
"Whatever. I'm going to go help Carole with dinner. Love you." Kurt said kissing the top of my head and walking out of the room. I tightened a couple of my guitar strings and started to practice my song.
"What were you playing up there Blaine?" Burt asked over dinner. "Yes Blaine, do tell us what you were playing." Kurt smiled. "Actually Burt, it's my glee assignment for the week. But I want to surprise Kurt so I can't tell you. And Kurt knew that." I said nudging Kurt under the table. He crossed his arms and frowned. "You know this kids hates surprises right?" Burt laughed. "Oh I know." I smiled.

"Alright Rachel, that was very nice." Mr. Shue said guiding Rachel from the middle of the choir room. Her song was a big Broadway number that really had nothing to do with home. It was very Rachelish, loud and over the top. "Next up, Mr. Blaine Anderson." I grabbed my guitar from its stand and pulled a stool onto the floor. I could feel everybody's eyes glued to me, I didn't like it. "I'm sure Kurt is ready to kill me over this song because I refused to tell him what it was." I said wanting to break the tension I was feeling. A ripple of laughter went through everybody. "And as Kurt knows we definitely road in trucks." I smiled. I started to play the chords and I looked at Kurt the entire time.
I started to strum softly and slowed got into my zone.
"Down where I was born was Heaven on earth, the Flint River washes that red Georgia dirt. The sun sets slow and the stars shine bright.
We raised cotton, corn, a little cane and kids. You either lived on a farm or wished you did. And Jesus always walked close by our side. Where I grew up, we rode in trucks.
There's a lot about life we learned on the bus, how to lie how to fight how to kiss how to cuss. The closer we sat to the back that smarter we got.
We were poor, we were ugly, we were all best friends. Wide-eyed baptized and still wantin' to sin. Thank God we get more that just one shot. Where I grew up, we rode in trucks.
That's us haulin' hay in the field with the radio on. That's us headin' straight into own when the work was done. In my mind I can still see us now, ridin' down Buck Island Road. Its wasn't that long ago.
We thought tobacco and beer in a can was all it would take to be like our old man. But I saw how it made my momma cry.
I walked up to Kurt and sat in a chair and faced him. I could almost hear everybody's eyes shift and land on us. A few of the girls let out 'Awwwws'.
It was huntin' and fishin' and football games, then it was girls, and everything changed. Fallin' in and out of love, we rode in trucks.
That's us with our tailgates down in the parking lot. That's us with mud on our tires when it rained a lot. In my mind I can still see us now ridin' down Buck Island Road. It wasn't that long ago, it's a part of my soul, yeah.
Down where I was born was Heaven on earth. The Flint River washes that red Georgia dirt. The sun sets slow and the stars shine bright.
Where I grew up, we rode in trucks."
Kurt leaned over and kissed me softly. Everyone was clapping and Santana was making kissy noises at us. I pulled away and looked at everybody else. "My dolphins are so cute!" Brittany shouted. "Dolphins?" I asked. "Yeah, dolphins are just gay sharks and sharks are obviously all guys." She rolled her eyes. I just nodded and went along with it. I had been here long enough to know that you don't question Brit. "Thank you Brit." Kurt smiled.
The bell rang and the rest of the club hustled out of the room in a rush to get break started. Kurt and I just sat there for a moment looking at each other. "I love you." he whispered. "I love you too." I whispered back and kissed him softly. "Let's get home."
I pulled my back pack on and locked my guitar back in its case. "Ready Freddy?" Kurt smiled. I laughed and slipped my hand into Kurt's. We walked back to my truck and tossed our stuff in the bed.
"We're home!" Kurt shouted. "Come in here boys!" Burt shouted from the kitchen. I followed Kurt into the kitchen and sat on the counter. Kurt rolled his eyes at me and sat across from Burt. "What's up?" I asked. "You know that we're going to Uncle Mark's tomorrow right Kurt?" Kurt grimaced and looked over at me. "Who's Uncle Mark?" I frowned. "Mark was Kurt's mom's older brother." Burt signed. "He's a homophobic asshole is what he is." Kurt snipped. I looked at Burt quickly and he nodded. "Mark isn't the most pleasant person to be around." Burt frowned. "Please don't make Blaine go dad. He's bad enough to me how's he going to act around a stranger! You know how ter-" "Hey cool it." Burt cut off. Kurt shrunk back in his chair and crossed his arms. "What I was going to say was that I'm not making you go this year." Burt sighed.
"Wait seriously?" Kurt said sitting up quickly.
"Yeah, seriously." Burt laughed.
"Oh my God dad I love you. Thank you, thank you, thank you" Kurt said pulling his dad into a hug.
"You're welcome." Burt said.
"Carole is makin' Finn go so it'll be just you two. You be okay?" Burt asked getting up.
"We'll be fine dad. I'll cook and Blaine can watch football. It'll be fine; I won't let him burn the house down." Kurt said excitedly.
"Hey!" I shouted.
"I only kidding B, chill."
"Just don't make me regret this. There's money on the counter for you to go to the store. I'd hurry up if I were you. Snow storms coming in here in a couple hours." Burt said walking away and into the living room.
Kurt squealed a little and wrapped his arms around my neck. "Let's go. We're gonna get stuck with whatever's in the fridge for dinner tomorrow." I said sliding off the counter. "I'll go grab my coat." Kurt said pecking my cheek and running up the stairs. I pulled on my hoodie and Newton baseball cap from the coat rack and grabbed my keys off the hooks. I glanced out the front window and sighed. There was already sleet pouring down and blowing strongly.
"Ready?" Kurt asked jumping down the stairs. "Truck?" he frowned. "Look outside and you'll see why." I laughed. Kurt opened the door and cursed. "People who curse have to dig their own cars out of the snow Friday!" I shouted running to the truck. I could hear the door slam behind me and Kurt's feet hitting the ground.
I shut my door and leaned over and locked Kurt's. "Really Blaine open the door!" Kurt shouted banging on the window. I reached over and hovered my hand over the knob. "Damn it, open up Blaine Samuel. My hair's going to be ruined!" he whined. I unlocked it and started the car. Kurt slammed the door and knocked my cap off my head. "You suck Blaine Anderson. You suck big time." Kurt said flipping down the sun visor. "Why is there no mirror in this damn truck?" he huffed. "Guess who's shoveling their own car out on Friday when they wanna go shopping at 3 a.m.?" I smirked. "Guess who gets to carry all the groceries out of the store." Kurt snarked. "You know I was goin' to do that anyway." I smiled and leaned over and kissed the corner of his lips. Kurt kissed my forehead and laughed. "Only you could make me forgive you for messing up my hair." he grinned.
"We're home Dad!" Kurt shouted. I set the bags on the counter started putting away the cold stuff. "Hey guys." he said softly and sat down at the table. I froze a little when I saw Burt's worried expression. "What's the matter dad?" Kurt asked sitting next to him. "I got some papers in the mail the other day from Robin Anderson." he said softly. "My mom?" I said turning around at the sound of my mother's name.
"Um yeah. Do you want them?" Burt asked pulling an envelope out of him pocket. I sank into a chair and reached across the table. I glanced down at the envelope in my hands and read the return address. 'Robin Anderson 1100 E 1700 N, Newton, IL 62448' "Are you going to open them?" Kurt whispered. I squeezed my eyes shut tight and shook my head. "N-n-not right now. I- I'm gonna go to my room." I said darting up the stairs.
I closed my door softly behind me and slowly walked over to my desk drawer and laid the letter in the top drawer and slammed it hard. I flopped down in my and cover my face with a pillow. I hadn't heard from my mom in weeks. Not even a damn text. I knew what was in those letters; I'd been living with Kurt's family and not my own under my mom's consent. I pulled a blanket over my face and let the tears spill out.
Author's Note: Happy late Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, Old Christmas, etc. It's been FOREVER, I know! I hope everybody had a great holiday season and stayed safe. The sky has been basically vomiting snow for almost 24hrs and I currently don't have school tomorrow! I doubt I'll be able to get out of my house for a couple of days, yay! (It's not like I had plans anyway) Haha! Well I hope you liked this chapter. Song: 'We rode in Trucks'- Luke Bryan (aka hottest country boy alive!)
