Chapter fifteen: Signing the confession.
When I had eventually returned to retake my post as Renesmee's... Protector, more or less, Felix was still in his place. He was still watching her closely and making sure to be out of sight. Nothing so far had happened, other than the fact she was often seen looking around when making her way to the cafeteria with her friends. It was most probable that she was looking around for me, seeing as she had the knowledge I was around.
Giving him the information I had received from Delilah, Felix handled it with the professionalism it needed. He wasted no time in darting off to inform Jane, and would return back with an answer. I was well aware that the Cullen's would be present for the exchange of information; or Edward would hear it. Either way, they would be in the know with this also.
That didn't bother me too much, really.
We were working our investigation around them; and it did involve them. Some of the input they had could be used, I presumed. Carlisle was a very smart man, as was most of the Cullen's - although, I wasn't all too sure about the pretty blonde. If it was all a facade in making people believe she was just some superficial, dim-witted blonde, then it was working; as was her mates obvious lack of an IQ - so any bit of information we receive involving them could help.
I just hoped that they wouldn't come up with some ill prepared plan and moved in without the clearance it needed. Although they were involved, this was still a Volturi matter. It was for us to deal with, and us alone. Interference from that department was not needed, nor wanted.
I decided, despite Renesmee's obvious attempts at trying to find me, it would be best if I just stayed in the shadows. I had to wait for Felix to return with Jane's reply before I could go in and play happy college-goer. Besides, I would be lying if I said I wasn't entirely enjoying myself watching her. Renesmee had such elegance in her own little way. She was clumsy in some sense, yes. But she was elegant about it. Although I'd give the world to go and interact with her; I was happy with watching, even though it made my heart ache.
She didn't do much. She just... Sat there. Spoke to a select few of them, laughed, smiled. But it was mainly just sitting and listening. I was almost, if not completely sure, something was wrong. Renesmee wasn't one to just sit in the shadows. When I had known her, she could hardly keep her mouth shut. Even in her sleep she would let her voice be heard. If she were to enter a silence competition, she would always lose.
And yet, this girl was as quiet as one could be. She would laugh when it was expected, speak when spoken too, and smile when she needed too. Other than that, Renesmee made no outgoing interference to speak. Temptation to go over and demand to know what was wrong was overpowering; but then I was struck with the reminder.
I had known Renesmee when she was the chatterbox. But that had been a long time ago now. It was possible for a person to change, I knew that more than anyone. Perhaps this was the new ways she practiced in? She was the quiet, pretty face of this new group of hers. While they all talked with their mouths full of food, and laughed hysterically; she was the face of perfection.
Despite being quiet, she truly did look happy.
I didn't like it. Her outright stubborn nature, and inability to keep quiet were one of the things that had drawn me to her. Yes, I had found it highly irritating to begin with; but it was what made her... Reny. My Reny.
I couldn't help but to reflect on what Demetri had asked on behalf of the newborn. When I had answered, I was sure that we were finished - due to the way things had ended. But had I truly accepted it? Had I truly faced the fact that Renesmee was no longer part of my life? I don't think I did; because now... Facing this; it did something. I repulsed, angered and downright crushed me.
I had answered on the basis that she had lost me. But I hadn't answered on the fact that there was a possibility that I had lost her too. The Renesmee I had loved, the Renesmee I still loved was right there... But she wasn't. This was a new Renesmee. This was who she was now. What she was like without me.
"Alec," Demetri's voice, so serious and professional, sounded. "Jane requests your presence to go over what our little insider discussed."
Well, I was well aware she would send a message back; but I wasn't quite expecting her to send for me. However, I knew I couldn't entirely leave Jane waiting.
"I'll watch over her. If anything happens, I will intervene." Demetri reassured. He must've sensed my hesitation. If I wasn't so prideful in myself, I might've thanked him. Demetri knew that also; for the look I gave him clarified that. A unspoken gesture of thanks. Truthfully, I was pleased it was Demetri who would be watching Renesmee in my absence. If I was with Jane, and he was here watching the hybrid; it meant they wouldn't be near one another.
Although I wasn't naive to believe Jane would take a mate, I still preferred Demetri not to be around my sister. I trusted her, yes. I knew Jane better than anyone, yes. I knew that Jane wouldn't think of being with someone; not after our pasts - and even more so because of what happened to me - but Demetri was a shady charmer. He could sweet talk girls. I had witnessed it; and as of recently, I was leaning towards the idea that he may stand a chance at getting to Jane.
Before, it was a laughing matter - but now... It worried me. I presumed that Demetri must've caught on to that; since he wasn't trying all too hard as he had been. Now that my attention was solely on Jane and the Volturi, he knew that if he were to even come close to being with Jane; I would disapprove. I refused to let Jane experience what I had. I refused to have her feel rejection again. I refused to let her get hurt, and I refused to let her need anyone but me.
I took off as quickly as I could, weaving and sliding past the maze of trees; and eventually onto the city buildings. Despite the noon rush of people making their way to work; I easily blended in with the shadows. I couldn't necessarily wander through the city in my Volturi uniform - plus the fact my eyes were a tangy orange. I'd need to make a mental note to feed soon. I needed to keep up my strength; just in case. I had faith in Delilah, although I really shouldn't. I believed that she would muster up some excuse to postpone this little plan of Lilianna's until Aro arrived.
Corin wouldn't have wasted time with human traveling. She would have no doubt travelled the natural vampire way. By foot. If that was true, she would be nearing Volterra - if she had been travelling non stop. It wouldn't be long until Aro arrived - who would take human transport. Well, I believed he would. With the urgency of this mission, I doubt he would bother running all the way here. Our species were fast, yes. But traveling by plane would be quicker and more efficient.
Crossing through the city was the easy part. Jane's trail was easy to find; and the trail was close enough. With each step I took; the stronger her scent became. The more evident it was I was drawing closer in on her. This might've forced me to move quicker - which it did in the beginning.
However...
Another scent lingered in the air; forcing me to slow my hurried pace down. Delilah was in the area. Somewhere, she was hiding. The tangy orange taste lingering around; mixed with another - but Delilah's was stronger. With the added mixture, I knew she wasn't alone. She was with someone. Another member of her coven? Probably.
As I closed in on the small area Jane was standing in; I could see she too had caught on to this. She didn't speak a word; but her eyes said different. Delilah was with someone; and it could be the ringleader herself. I wasn't all too sure; but I was very well aware they were close. As was Jane.
We knew better than to go after it, however. We had a plan set in motion; and doing something rash would most likely ruin everything. Before we made any moves, we needed to hear from Aro. We needed his guidance in how to handle this problem. Both Jane and I decided, silently, to ignore it scent of smell - despite all of our instincts telling us to run after it.
"Have you found anything?" Jane asked.
I wasn't stupid. I knew she was talking like this; because there could be the possibility they could hear us. She was playing it safe. Making us appear to be none the wiser. What she was truly asking; was if I had heard anything more from Delilah.
"No." I answered with a brief shake of my head. "Nothing new."
Jane nodded. "Nor have I."
"Nothing on the Cullen's?"
She shook her head again. "They have no idea."
Ah, so she hadn't informed them of what we had recently found out.
"It won't be long until they find out, sister."
"I know that."
It wouldn't be long until they found out this information. That much was obvious to us both. Be it from her head, or more likely Felix's - who was no doubt currently playing their bodyguard. I decided to query on this.
"I crossed Demetri. He was at the human College, watching for the hybrid. But Felix wasn't with him."
"I have him scouting out the rest of the family."
So he was looking over the Cullen's.
"And your search... How is it?" Jane carefully worded.
She wanted to know about my current position, watching over Renesmee? There was so much I could tell her. How proud I was that she was able to settle in a new town, despite leaving everyone she had known behind her. How good it felt to finally see her again; but then there was also that ache. There was that pain; that I knew would never leave me.
"Unvarying." I answered in a nonchalant way.
Letting Jane inside of my head wasn't a good thing to go. Allowing her to know that being near Renesmee did things to me, good and bad, wouldn't end well. She would no doubt insist that I pull myself from being Renesmee's guardian; and in this moment in time... I wasn't so sure I'd be all too willing for that to happen. With it being me watching over her; I knew she would be safe - even if I was dropping out and leaving her in the care of the others from time to time.
I would still be her constant protector. That wouldn't change. Not until we had this problem dealt with. Jane tilted her head back and inhaled deeply. She was testing the air, evidently. Seeking out any unwanted eavesdroppers no doubt. The scent wasn't as strong as it had been, but it was still lingering with the brisk afternoon wind.
"Have you heard anything from home?" I asked, somewhat believing we were alone. I would have felt the eyes watching if they had gotten closer. I'd have felt their presence; but presently, I felt nothing. We could be alone, but they could be hiding behind Scott - the invisible barrier.
"Not as of recently." Jane shook her head. "But it shan't take long for us to hear back. The urgency of this isn't something he would ignore, Alec." He, being Aro. Although I was well aware Aro would take this with severe seriousness; it was nice to be reassured.
This... Coven, more or less, was threatening a dear 'friend' of Aro's. Carlisle, despite the problems in the past, was someone Aro held dear. Why he did; I wasn't sure. But what stood out more than that, which personally was why I believed Aro would act straight away, was they threatened our coven.
No one disobeyed the Volturi. We were the law. We were the order. We were the rulers. Aro's orders were what kept our coexistence with the human's possible. For someone to be foolish enough to call war upon the 'royalty' so to speak, it was a suicide. It was suicide to call war upon any other coven anyway. A crime against our species; against coven's.
Any coven would react in the way we currently were. Taking things into our hands to ensure our coven's life, so to speak. The mere thought of someone wanting to destroy my... Dare I even think it, family was enough to boil my inner rage.
The thought of Jane being in danger would send me into a frenzy. Even Felix and Demetri - whom I could barely stand being in the same room as for long periods - grated on my nerves. Although I wasn't entirely fond of them, and viewed them as morons, they were still a part of my coven.
I nodded my head gently and held out my hand for her. Jane eagerly stepped forward and placed her hand into mine. Jane merely took hold of my hand and stood in front of me, saying nothing; giving off no expression.
If eyes were on us; they would no doubt be frustrated with the lack of communication going on between us; yet we were in deep conversation. Jane's eyes were telling me everything I needed to see. She was worried. She was questioning me about being near Renesmee. She was questioning my motives in being close to her again, for she was fearful I'd spiral downward again; after all the hard work I had put in place to get to where I was now.
But I was reassuring her. I wouldn't go back to those days. I had worked hard to come out of the pit of depression Renesmee had left me in. I had gone through each of the steps slowly; and now I was on the right track of being myself again. The Alec Renesmee had met two years ago; when I had first accepted the mission of investigating her.
I knew I still had some work cut out for me to get there; but I would get there eventually. I truly believed that if I did this, if I managed to destroy Lilianna once and for all, saving both our covens; I'd finally be at peace. I'd never have to look upon the ghost of my past ever again; both of them.
Lilianna would die, and I would hold no need to come close to the Cullen's ever again; resulting in me finally being free.
"I don't like seeing you like this, Alec." Jane said, breaking the silence. I could see it in her eyes, but with her voicing; made it all the more true.
"It will be over soon, sister."
Jane let out a sigh through her nose, her dark red eyes closing as she gave my hand a gentle squeeze. "But it won't be over until Renesmee is truly out of your life, will it?"
My words caught in my throat. I wasn't entirely sure how I could respond to that. Jane had always been so good at reading me. Physically, mentally, and even emotionally - when I showed emotion, that is. Instead of giving an answer, I let out a sigh of my own and leant forward; letting my chin rest on top of her head and pulling her closer to my chest. My free hand wrapped itself around her; while she did the same with her own free hand. Never once did out interlocked hold of hands break.
"I recently read an old myth. I think it was Japanese," Jane whispered into my chest. "It said that twins are the reincarnated souls of past lovers who took their lives to be together in death; in result they were to pay for their sins. The sin was most likely the fact they killed themselves, but all the sins they had ever committed."
My lips twitched in amusement to her little confession. It would make sense, however. Jane and I had always been inseparable; in both human and immortal lives. Jane had always been the only person I wished to stand beside, or be near for that matter. In the beginning of our immortal lives; I often waited eagerly for the hours where she would cuddle up to my chest and tearlessly weap. Then, once we were separated and given separate dorms, I'd wait anxiously for the sweet knock on my door - then the appearance of her coming through the door to hug into me till the morning.
Jane was the only one to ever stay with me throughout everything. Good and bad, she never once stopped trying with me. Perhaps that was the reason neither one of us had set out to find a mate? We were content with each other because of the possibility of living a past life?
We lived in a world of vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, hybrids and god knows what else. The possibility of reincarnation wouldn't surprise me.
"If that happens to be true," I let out a small chuckle, "I presume we must've been terribly sinful for the life we are currently living."
Jane turned her head up; allowing her eyes to find mine. There was a gentle frown on her face. I had never entirely liked it when Jane frowned. It made her look older - Ha. I do amuse myself - with the wrinkles on her forehead. "Our lives are better now, Alec; despite of this current situation."
I retracted the hand from hers and brought it to her face, cupping her jaw in a caressing motion.
"I know that," I sighed. "I was merely commenting."
Jane's features softened once again. "I realize I never tell you as often as I once did, but I do love you brother."
"I know." I said again, brushing my thumb across her granite marble skin. "I'm not oblivious to that knowledge, Jane."
"Good." She nodded. "And if there is anything you want me to do... You understand I would do it? No matter what."
I frowned with her little confession. She would do anything? I wasn't entirely sure what she meant by that; nor how far she was going with it, but I couldn't help myself in asking. "Excuse me?"
"If you wished for Renesmee to be out of your life for good, despite Aro's... Past interest in her, and decision to keep her alive, I would take care of it. I would do anything to keep you happy, brother."
My insides twisted.
She would go against Aro's orders for me. She would go against the only person I believed who stood between us taking over the world. Jane was terribly close to Aro. He was the father she had always craved, he was the master she followed like a lost puppy, and he was the guardian that she knew would never be able to falter in protecting her.
He was the only other person I was positive that stood a threat to the relationship I had with my sister. It had once bothered me greatly; that my sister was beginning to depend on someone other than me. I adapted, obviously, but knowing that she was willing to go against him... Just for me. It was ravishing, yet greatly troubling.
I would never wish death upon Renesmee. No matter how hard she had hurt me. She didn't deserve death. She deserved better, just as I had said. But Jane offering that, despite irritating me; calmed me. My sister was willing to go against our ruler for me; when I was positive there was no way in hell she'd ever go against him.
I guess I could say goodbye to the period where Jane had ignored me, and wouldn't even look in my direction. With her announcing this; she was basically confessing her loyalty to me.
I leant forward and pressed a kiss onto her forehead. Savouring the feeling of her skin against my lips, and she sweet smell of her scent.
"I am happy." I whispered on to her head.
I pulled away and gazed into her deep, dark crimson eyes. They were reflecting all the emotions running through my head.
"I think it should be you who meets with our little fly on the wall next time." I voiced in a barely audible whisper; far too low for anyone other than Jane to hear. "Say that I sent you."
Jane nodded her head. "That is what I came to ask. You need to take charge of your post. I was just curious if you were sure of what you are doing... With being near her again."
I sucked in a breath. Was I sure of what I was doing? Yes. I was merely there to look over her. Anyone could do it. Was I prepared for what it could cause me? No. I doubt I would ever be prepared; but I was sure Jane knew that also. If she was, she wouldn't say so. She was respecting my choice in doing this. She saw that I needed to do this, as a last attempt to fry any ties I held to Renesmee.
Even though it was driving me mad being so close to her, yet so far.
"Make sure you eat," Jane pressed in a harsher tone. Ordering me around again, so to speak. I nodded in agreement. I'd eat as soon as I got the chance.
"I will see you again soon, brother." Jane said, nuzzling her head onto my hand.
"Be safe." I answered.
"You too."
And just like that, Jane vanished from my grip. I took a look around my surroundings, and noticed the hours had ticked by. I had arrived at noon; and now the sun was setting, causing the sky to change from the bleak grey into a clear orange.
I'd left Renesmee under the watchful eye of Demetri for long enough. I needed to get back to him and take on the responsibility I had said I would. With no other thought, I took off back towards the Campus.
—xXx—
She started tonight. She would sit watching the Volturi like the good little minion Lilianna believed her to be. Of course a part of her felt bad for doing this... Lilianna had been good to her, despite everything. She had brought them all together. She and Ryan were closer than ever, and deep down... Delilah knew that if it wasn't for Lilianna - Mary and Scott would have never of found one another, although they liked to think they would have. Ryan would have most likely never have become close to Damien, because he would have had Delilah as his best friend.
It was her disappearance that pushed Ryan to seek out Damien. Truthfully, she was thankful he had found Ryan. Although they were the complete opposites, they counteracted one another. Delilah believed they would have complimented each others traits as a human, also. Ryan with his past ADHD, and Damien with his bipolar disorder. Delilah couldn't help but believe that was the reason Damien possessed the gift he did, forcing everyone to feel the mood and emotion he was. But with immortality, he had control over his mood swings now. He was consistently calm and collected. They only ever felt a change when he was hungry - which was why Lilianna kept him well fed. Keeping Damien calm resulted in keeping the rest of the newborns calm, making them easier to control.
Shay stuck to Damien's side like glue, when he was in the house. If he wasn't, she would wait silently for him - unless a lesson of words was taking place. As soon as he re-emerged, she was right back to his side. Delilah was positive she had seen him smile a few times when she'd sit herself beside him. Damien never smiled; and when he did, it was mainly out of sarcasm.
Currently, Lilianna was in the kitchen; speaking to Scott. She was informing him of Delilah's little plan; leaving Lilianna to sit on the sofa beside Ryan. Mary was at his side, with her legs firmly crossed under her body. There was a space beside her that had belonged to Scott.
On the chair was Damien. That chair had been firmly dubbed as his. No one ever sat in it besides him. Actually, Delilah was positive she hadn't seen anyone even look at that chair since he had claimed it. The only person who ever came close to it would be Shay; and even then she would sit on the floor besides the chair.
Which is what she was doing currently. Her chin resting effortlessly onto her knee. A new face, however, was at the other side of Damien. Hiding in the corner. Delilah knew that face. She had been the little girl Lilianna had brought up. Veronica was supposed to be looking after her, but she wasn't anywhere to be seen.
She had to watch her back. If Lilianna lost her temper, Delilah was positive it wouldn't end well. Belle, that was the girls name, couldn't be older than sixteen, nor no younger than fourteen. She had light freckles on her face; pale... But still there. The girl must've had a severe case of freckle face in her human years for there still to be small reminders. Delilah had lost all of her imperfections with her transformation.
Not that she would call the freckles imperfections. They made her seem more innocent. God knows Lilianna loved innocence. Just look at Mary, a walking, talking little doll that cherished the very floor Lilianna walked on.
Delilah turned her eyes away from Belle, and let them rest on Damien; who was lost in his own thoughts no doubt. His teeth consistently ran across his bottom lip; evidently trying to find any skin to rip off. Shay was looking up at him, chin still on her knee, with adornment lingering in those scarlett pools.
Was Damien oblivious to how Shay was looking at him? Currently, Delilah was positive that he was. Ryan nudged her shoulder, forcing her to look away. It was then that he realized his hand was on her knee.
"When was the last time you ate?" Ryan quired, nonchalantly. Damien's gift must be on full power right now. "You're not as observant as you usually are."
"What d'you mean by that?" Delilah frowned.
"I put my hand on your knee five minutes ago, expecting you to jump or something."
"Oh." Delilah shrugged. "I didn't notice."
"I figured that, Delly."
"I was thinking." She explained.
"Dangerous thing to do."
Although he was idly trying to insult her playfully, it was true. None of them really should think; not when they had Lilianna. She was the brains of everything. They were just to follow orders and do as they were told. Nothing more, nothing less. She couldn't really argue with Ryan's statement on that one.
"Wanna go for a walk later?" Ryan then suggested. "Just the two of us? I'll speak to Lilianna and say you need to feed."
There was nothing Delilah wanted more. Alone time with her best friend, the person who understood her more than she did herself; but she couldn't.
"I've gotta head out with Scott later." Delilah told the truth. Although she had to hide this from Ryan - for now - she couldn't lie to him. It didn't feel right, even if it was to save his life.
"Right." Ryan said after a pause. "Maybe next time then?"
"It's a promise." Delilah nodded her head, tilting her head to rest it against his shoulder. The hand on his knee took hold of hers; and let her stay like that.
They were aware of Mary looking at them; but she didn't say a word. Instead, she nuzzled herself closer to Ryan and copied Delilah's pose. They both knew why. Mary was the only one who was accepted to hug into people from Lilianna. She was supposed to be the needy, caring little sister that adored her siblings - which she did. But she hugged into Scott for a different reason. If Lilianna were to come in and see just Delilah and Ryan hugging into one another - she would think the worst.
But with Mary doing it also... It looked as innocent as it would ever be.
Delilah cherished this moment. Ryan's hand in hers, the sound of his breathing at her ear, the feeling of his head resting against hers.
The world around Delilah blurred for a short moment in time, allowing her to be lost in a world of their own; while Ryan's words whispered into her ear: "Patience was never really my thing."
It was just Ryan and herself. Lost in the world, walking along side by side. He was holding her hand in this little vision - and Delilah knew why. Ryan was holding her hand, thus meaning he could soak up her gift and use it on her. He could use it on anyone; but he was giving them their walk.
Although he'd never admit it, Ryan really was a hopeless romantic at heart. Oblivious most of the time - something he had in common with Damien there - but he was romantic when he wanted to be. The small gesture was enough to make her feel as though her heart had kickstarted and began racing again.
Delilah relished in that small moment. Uncaring to everything that was going on around her. What Ryan was doing for her was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for her. She had once been terrified of her own mind, and what it could do to her - and now he could do this... She could see that there was nothing to be afraid of.
Although it was short, and swift, Delilah didn't want it to end. Because when it did... She was brought back into the reality as to what her life was. It was just in time, too. For as soon as Ryan pulled the image from them; Lilianna and Scott re-appeared from their chat.
As Lilianna past Shay, her hand brushed over the top of her head in a caressing motive. However, the gesture didn't have the desired effect on Shay as what would have been expected. A gesture of kindness from Lilianna was what practically every newborn here craved; yet Shay went wide eyed and shuffled herself closer to the chair Damien was on.
For once, Damien took notice. He frowned down at the girl scooting herself closer to him than she'd ever been. Something was wrong, and he wanted to ask what. Delilah wanted to ask what - but with Lilianna now in the room; they were all brushed into a silence.
"Delilah, Scott... I want you both to go out and feed." Lilianna instructed, unnoticing to the fact practically all attention was on Shay on the floor. "Damien, Ryan, and Mary... You've to come with me. We're taking out all of our family."
All of them? Delilah's eyes widened. Had she gone against her promise? Was she going ahead with her plan after all?
"We're going to the lake. I want everyone to get used to us going out as a family."
Delilah knew why. She was going to make sure they all cooperated with one another for when she decided to go through with her plan. Although it still left her unnerved, she still had managed to postpone the inevitable.
There was no objections, nor were there any questions. Lilianna was using her 'don't test me' voice. "We're leaving now."
Well, their little 'walk' had come to a true end, it seemed. Ryan's hand in Delilah's gave a gentle squeeze. Evidently, he was thinking the same thing that she was.
With the subtle squeeze, he let go and pulled himself up from the sofa. He walked after Lilianna, whistling the tune from a movie they had once watched together. 'It's a hard not life' from Annie.
Boy, Ryan really was pushing the limits when it came down to Lilianna; wasn't she?
Although she was a little taken off guard with Ryan's selection of song; her attention returned to Shay. She was still huddled closely to the chair; which Damien was no longer in. He was standing, looking down at her and holding out his hand to help her up.
"Are you alright?" Delilah asked, voicing most of their thoughts.
Shay nodded her head, though she certainly didn't look alright. Delilah looked to Damien, ignoring Scott looking to her with confusion - and the fact Mary was now hugging into Scott in a goodbye.
"I'll get it out of her." Damien mouthed, relief washing over him when Shay took hold of his hand. He helped her up, and lead her out of the room.
What the hell could have been bothering her? All Delilah could do was wonder; for it wasn't as if she could actually tell them. They were still taking baby steps with her talking predicament. No one was more patient with her than what Damien was, and effectively, he had been the one to get the most out of her. If there was anyone who could get something out of her; it would be Damien.
Although, this time it wasn't going to be so simple. Shay wasn't going to tell. She couldn't. The image she had seen was one she never wanted to speak of - if she could even speak it in the first place. It was a dark, dark memory of Lilianna's that had coursed through her head the moment her hand touched her head.
It must've been hidden in the darkness of her mind; a place where she kept locked up. And yet with the current situation they found themselves in, its locks must've come loose, since Shay was able to see it.
Shay could see the pasts of peoples lives with a touch, as could see project her own to whomever she was touching - if she so wished. Truthfully, she wasn't entirely sure how she had managed to see the past of Lilianna. She had merely been thinking on what Damien would have been like as a human, and hoped that one day she could ask to see it.
In order to do that, she would have to perfect her gift - which meant practice. Perhaps that was how? Unknowingly letting her gift roam free through her body as she daydreamed about her Sloth? She hoped Lilianna didn't know she had saw it... Whatever it was.
It had nothing to do with her, thus another reason why she wouldn't voice it. Lilianna had done a bad, bad thing. Something out of jealousy and rage. Although most girls would do all they could to claim the man they loved; she never once predicted someone would do that.
"Victor, glad you could come." The warming sound of Mr. Lovell sounded; upkeeping his friendly and respectable tone. Although it was past her bedtime, she couldn't help but feel intrigued when the door had gone. It was rare for them to get visitors at this time of night; even if her father was a member of the village council.
Why would he ask Victor to come here anyway? Victor Cecil was a busy man, and needed all the rest he could get. Besides his work with her father on the council, he was also a soldier. He had fought alongside the best soldiers the army had ever enlisted.
She had no doubt that Alec would push on and become a soldier himself - even if they were currently rejecting him on the basis of the whole 'twin' thing. Lilianna was certain that Aleczander would make a fine young soldier; though secretly... She was somewhat happy of the rejection. If he wasn't enlisted, that would mean he would never be taken from her. He would never be killed in battle - like Edmund had.
"A matter like this isn't one to leave till the morn' Gilderoy." Victor replied as he stepped into the house. Lilianna pressed herself closer to the stair wall; hiding herself from them as they entered the house. Once she was positive they were inside, and couldn't see her; she peeked through the wooden rails and watched eagerly.
"Now tell me," Victor continued as he had himself down. Her mother was standing there, handling the pot of tea; but didn't say a word. Her father sat opposite Victor, and the look on his face gave Lilianna the realization that this was serious. There was no way in hell she was going to bed now! Not when there could be juicy gossip to share with Aleczander! Maybe then he would show more of an interest in her! "Is it true?"
"Indeed, it is." Gilderoy nodded. "As you know; our children are becoming old enough to become betrothed. In some aspect, I would have prefered for Edmund to have been here; god rest his soul-" Each of them made a small tribute to her fallen brother. Bowing their heads in salute. "- in order for this arrangement, however that isn't the case anymore. I do not have a son to offer any longer."
Lilianna wasn't sure where this was going, but it was twisting her insides. Alec was turning sixteen. The usual age for boys to be married off and create their own family. She was turning sixteen in a years time, but that didn't mean anything. There had been cases that boys had married girls younger than them; more than the age gap between Alec and herself. Was this her chance? Had her father saw the look in her eyes when she was with Alec? Did he realize that he was the one she wanted to be with forever?
"I do have my daughters, however." Gilderoy continued. "Both prime in their age, and you have your son."
"Aleczander," Victor nodded. "He is not sixteen for another week."
"And here I stand with my daughters also. Lilianna is not sixteen for another year, nor Grace for another few seasons."
Her stomach was doing backflips.
"Are you suggesting that I take my choice of your girls for my son, Gilderoy?"
"No, not at all." Her father shook her head. "It would be preferable for the arrangement to become finalized as quick as possible. Thus enforcing the most obvious choice. Lilianna cannot wed until she is of age, which is not for another year."
"And so my son will have to wait a year after his eligibility to wed?" Victor scoffed. "I do not think so, Gilderoy."
"It is not as if you are receiving any more offers for your sons hand, Victor." Her father scoffed back. "Besides, I did not say that I was meaning my sweet Lilianna."
Lilianna's heart skipped a beat. What... What had he just said?
"I suggest that on the eve of your children's birthday, we announce the betrothment of your son Aleczander, and my daughter... Grace."
Everything around her stopped. Her heart stopped. Her breathing stopped. Her mind went blank. Alec... her Alec was going to marry Grace? But... But Grace didn't love him. She didn't love him like Lilianna did. Sure, Grace said that she found him interesting, and oddly cute, but she didn't know him. She didn't know him like Lilianna. Lilianna thought the world of Aleczander. She would give him the world. All she ever wanted was him. All she would ever want was him, and yet here they were... Giving the boy she loved to her sister, who had no idea what she would give to belong to Alec.
He was supposed to be hers. They were going to run away together. He had promised. You didn't promise that to someone you didn't love. Alec did love her. He just didn't know it yet, but it was there just waiting to come out.
"This will not work without the consent of our children, Gilderoy." Victor smirked, taking the idea into consideration.
"I have spoken to Grace about this. She agrees that it would be beneficial to both our families for this union. All that awaits if for your son to approve." Which he would! Lilianna had seen the way he looked at Grace. She wasn't stupid. He would agree to it, with no hesitation.
And she would be there... Alone. Married off to someone she would never love. Grace had agreed to it... Alec would agree to it...
Lilianna felt as though she was about to throw up. How could this possibly happen. Just because she was fifteen? A lone year between the two of them, and Lilianna was destined to watch her marry the man she loved. Was God punishing her? Was the world trying to show her some message that you cannot get what you wish for? In that moment in time, that was what it felt like.
The two males went over why it would be beneficial to the both of them; and how Alec would agree if Victor would be the one to suggest it; and then the deal was made. They secured it with a handshake, and she watched with a broken heart and tear swollen eyes as Gilderoy escorted Victor to the door.
She wasn't going to be the one for Aleczander after all. Once again, Grace was stealing this from her too. She was going to be alone in the world... Suffering in silence as her sister produces children with Alec - when Lilianna knew full well it was supposed to be her baring his children. Their children.
"Lilianna, what are you doing up? You know full well you have church tomorrow." Gilderoy's voice was stern, but Lilianna couldn't move. Her heart was slowly shattering. "Forgive me Victor. She isn't usually up at this time."
"No trouble, Gilderoy." Victor smiled a cold, hard grin. One that never failed to give Lilianna shivers. "I'm sure Jane would do the same if she were to awaken to someone at the door." Though she wouldn't be foolish enough to come snoop. Lilianna knew all about the tight rules Victor set in place at his home. Aleczander and Jane never disobeyed their father - despite how much Alec disliked him.
It was then that Gilderoy saw the tears in her eyes, and automatically moved into overprotective father mode. "Darling, what's wrong?"
Victor was frowning, impatience growing as he waited to be dismissed from the house. It was only polite to wait until a proper farewell was set in place, and thus ensured he could not leave until Gilderoy said goodnight.
It was then that Lilianna realized there was only one way to get Alec out of this arrangement. There was only one way that she could ensure it would be her that would end up with him and not Grace. They would run away together, just like they had planned.
"I... I don't want Grace to marry Aleczander." Lilianna sniffled.
"I know you are close to the boy, sweetheart; but it will work in our favor." Gilderoy sighed, brushing his hand over her head as she stood herself up. He saw it was jealousy, and naive beliefs that she loved him; and it was all that, but she couldn't allow this to happen. Alec was hers.
"It's not that, father..." She whispered. "Alec and I are friends... He shows me things... And recently..."
Both men stared at her with confusion and interest. Sucking in a breath, and mentally hoping that it would work. That they would get away before all of this would happen to come up, Lilianna bit the bullet and lied.
"He showed me something that is wrong. Daddy, Alec and Jane are witches. I know it."
Just like that, she signed a confession ensuring Alec and Jane's death.
—xXx—
When I eventually got back to Demetri; he was eager to leave me. He didn't so much as inform me as to what had gone on in my absence with Renesmee. He just took off to return to Jane's side. He seemed... Unnerved. As if there was something he didn't want to tell me, despite my interest in asking.
I took it as a sign he merely wished to return to being Jane's lap dog and thought nothing more of it. Renesmee was looking at her phone when I took my post back at her side. Her hand was clasped around Garys - though I wasn't entirely surprised with that. She was very close to that boy, from what I had heard. There were glances to another boy within the group that unsettled me. He was dark haired and had ice blue eyes. Not to mention the fact he had a large... Unsightly tattoo up his arm, that reminded me far too much of the dogs Renesmee once lingered around.
I wondered how Jacob and his little mutts were getting on, actually. I had no doubt in my mind that once Aro arrived, they would be sent for. Jacob would not hesitate in coming to Renesmee's aid; which I was thankful for. At least that way; I knew she would always be protected, and she would always have someone there for her; to love her in the same way I had... And still did.
But that wasn't what had me seething. It was the topic of conversation I had heard, eventually. Renesmee was not only close to this Gary. Allegedly, she was in a relationship with him. She was openingly admitting it. She was defending his sexuality to Finn, who had his own advances after Renesmee.
I wouldn't class myself as a jealous person. I never got jealous... Well, I hadn't ever gotten jealous before. I was merely irritated at the fact she had lied to me about his sexuality. Why would she lie about such a thing like that to me? If she wasn't lying about that, why was she playing along in being his so called girlfriend? Renesmee had been so against the idea when it had been myself, offering to pose as her fake boyfriend to gain the attention of the Newton boy.
Was that it? He was posing as her boyfriend because she seeked the attention of another? Most likely this Finn boy... Who, judging by the look of him and the looks he was giving her, was not entirely innocent minded.
I did the only thing I could do. Stand back and listen as she turned this boy down. I watched as Finn made his way back to his friends, and began discussing in their own terms what had gone on. Gary, Renesmee's apparent boyfriend, wasn't one of them. Instead, it was a few of the others. One distinctive, who I was positive had lost a tooth - due to the little slur her had to his words - took the lead in questioning him on it.
"So, what went on?" He asked.
"She's a stubborn one," Finn chuckled. "But I've always liked that."
"Y'know Gary isn't gonna give up on her, right?" Another commented. He had thick glasses.
"Yeah, they're close; even if they're not in a relationship." This one was a twin who spoke, and his brother - standing at his side, was nodding along with his twins words.
"I don't buy that she's dating Gaz'" Finn rolled his eyes. "Besides, if she is; once I've got her... That'll be history."
"You actually want to date her?" Toothless gawked. "Seriously?"
"She's cute," Finn shrugged. "It's might be a good time to... Settle."
"What about all the others you got?"
"I never said I'd end it with them." Fin rolled his eyes yet again. "Just having a stable girlfriend might be good. She seems smart too, so I'll have a hand with this course work."
"Wow. Whoda' thought Finn would finally settle down." Someone commented with a laugh.
"Hey, I said it 'might' be good. I'll most likely lose interest after the first time I sleep with her. S'what always happens anyway."
.. He'd lose interest? In Renesmee? Was this boy mad? Renesmee was twice the woman to anyone he had ever been. To lose interest in her; would be like to lose interest in love all together.
"Sure you want another Lana running around?" Toothless scoffed.
"Lana, right! That reminds me. She's gonna be coming to my room. Better get back and wait on her."
The group quickened their walk while I watched in the shadows; gritting my teeth. It took everything within me not to go rip them all into pieces for even speaking of Renesmee like that.
I had to wait on her inside, otherwise the temptation would have been far too strong; and I'd have ripped the boy into pieces.
It was there I waited, until finally I heard the sound her footsteps as they moved up the stairs. I gritted my teeth and conjured the ability to hold in this feeling of... Rage.
When the door opened and she entered, moving fully into the room to look out the window; I pushed the door closed and locked it. There was no way in hell I was allowing anyone to walk in on this conversation.
Renesmee had answers to give me, and I didn't care who I killed in order to get them. Locking the door ensured I wouldn't kill anyone, if they were to waltz in unwantedly.
"Alec.."
"Care to explain a few things?" I sneered. "Now?"
I bid farewell to the whole 'I've never been jealous' statement. At this moment in time... That was exactly what I was, and I wanted reassuring that she was not with either of them. If she was... I couldn't be held accountable for my actions. It was a good thing I needed to feed; for if it came down to it... I'd happily change my preference of young teenage female blood to young, perverted morons instead!
A/N:
Well, you guys managed to do it. You never fail to amaze me.
So this chapter was a little hard to write, because despite how crazy and evil Lilianna can be; she really was just a human in that flashback. She took a chance in pure desperation to keep what was hers, and I felt for her. I really did. One sided love can hurt, right?
Maybe if she just told Alec how she felt, he might've rejected the offer of marrying Grace. Despite the fact he loved her an' all; Alec strikes me the sorta person - as a human - to care about his friends, and if marrying her sister would hurt her; I don't think he would have done it.
What do you guys think? If she told Alec, do you think he'd have still gone through with the wedding?
Leave you answer in a review; I'd love you hear from you guys.
Take it easy, I love you all.
