Chapter fourteen is here! Read on!

"Hi Daddy." She offers a guilty smile but my glare deepens and I see red.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I'm pacing back and forth as she sinks onto my bed and Zeke guards the tents opening.

She feeds off my anger and gathers strength of her own. "You know this is my fight too."

I explode and see stars in my vision, like I've become a shining red firework that's far too loud for enjoyment. "Your fight? Are you kidding me?! Bee, when has this ever been YOUR fight?!"

Tears are streaming down her face. "Since I found out the Determinant was MY biological father!" The words escape her mouth quickly in a breathless attempt to convey her point. My heart stops.

I close my eyes briefly. "How did you find out?"

"Grandma. She took the picture from you, with Uncle Caleb and the woman. I knew as soon as I looked at him. He wasn't around long enough for me to consider him as a fatherly figure, but I remember my mother screaming at him. He'd come to our little house in drunken rages, cause me to have nightmares for a long time." She intertwines her fingers as if she was praying, her small frame swaying back and forth. "He taught me how to swim. I wasn't supposed to leave while momma was at work, but I recognized him. Mom found us on our walk back home and told him he was forbidden to ever come in contact with me. Without a word he kissed my cheek and left. I never saw him again."

I'm speechless listening to her story. I open my mouth to respond, but Bee beats me to it, jumping straight up off the cot and into my face.

"So don't you dare try and say this isn't my fight anymore. That man has done horrible things, threatened people I love, and will receive no mercy from his only blood family member. I'm joining my real father's side. I'm not leaving." She grabs my hand.

I exhale and can only do one thing. I embrace her tightly, so disoriented from the information I've received in less than twenty four hours. "You can stay," I breathe, "but you must be careful. No reckless acts of bravery."

She pulls back with a smile and nods. It's not a promise, so I know it only means I'll follow that order until it's absolutely necessary.

Zeke takes a moment before budding in. "I have one question, how did you escape Shauna?"

Bee bites her lip apologetically. "Lincoln was at your mother's house. I used some of the money my dad left with me and set up an appointment for Shauna to get a pedicure. So, it's not like I tied her up or anything. You'll return home to a woman with baby smooth feet."

Zeke fights off a smirk and rolls his eyes. He turns to exit mumbling, "I have a phone call to make."

I look back at Bee. She places her head on my chest once more. "Don't be angry with me."

I tilt her face up to look in my eyes, just like when I'd make her look in my eyes when I was getting on to her about leaving the house by herself or smashing a vase in anger (though the only time she did that was because I was so clear about not getting a cat that she didn't know how to handle her anger). "I am so angry at you. But I'm glad you're here safely."

She pulls away and gives me a guilty smile and shrugs her shoulders. Outside the tent I hear shouting and Zeke calling out "put your hands in the air!" I hiss at Bee to stay put and run out of the tent. I note that she follows; completely ignoring me and proving that getting her to listen will be a mighty task. Caleb has pulled her aside, obviously confused by her presence. I push my way into a circle that has formed with a young man on his knees, his hands behind his head and his eyes turned down. "What's your name?" I ask, my voice dripping with authority.

"Scott. Scott Hawthorne." His body is caked with dirt and he meets my eyes apprehensively.

"Where are you from?"

"Indianapolis. The Determinant has taken over the city's citizens. He injected us with a liquid- a serum. Now everyone acts like zombies. I didn't work on me. So I ran."

"Divergent." Zeke whispers next to me and I nod.

"I guess he didn't enhance the formula in any way." I say to Zeke, and then turn my attention back to the young man. "Were there others who were like you? Unaffected?"

He nods. "But not many. The others, like my father, were killed."

I call Officer Daniel over, "Xavier, take him to get cleaned up. Give him a uniform and a tent. He's going to stay with us." Officer Daniels nods and leads the escaped man away from the circle of soldier.

"As you were, soldiers." Canned food is beginning to be passed out, so the group disperses in order to be fed.

Caleb approaches me while Bee hangs a few feet away. I immediately ask him about the information from the young boy. "Obviously, The Determinant didn't change up the serum, why wouldn't he Caleb?"

Caleb shrugs and shakes his head quickly. "We think that seems foolish for him to not change the serum, but we have no idea what the people in Indianapolis are like. Obviously their city must've been under an experiment as well. The serum could work even more efficiently on these people than those in Chicago." Caleb seems twitching to solve the unanswered questions and leaves without another word.

Soon afterward, we all head to the "pantry van" and receive a can of cold ravioli that can be warmed up by the multiple fires around our camp site. The Officers gather around a smaller one to discuss strategies and ideas. "We can't go in there completely blind. We need to send a team to check out their headquarters so we can prepare accordingly," Officer Williams suggests, meeting my eyes to show it was already discussed and therefore only needs my approval.

I take in the option. "Alright. All the officers will go, besides one."

"I'll stay." Officer Daniel offers too quickly, but I brush it off and thank him.

"Caleb will join us, take in the headquarters and create a map for us."

Officer Williams smiles at me. "Then it's settled."

The discussion becomes light and I turn to look for Bee. Sitting alone by a fire is our new member, Scott. Bee approaches him with a can of food, and then joins him for company. I slightly frown at the sight, not sure of my feelings towards our outsider but I feel Zeke's hand clap my shoulder. "Don't worry about her. She's always had no problem with strangers." I smile slightly but remember my fear from when she was a young girl. She trusts people so easily and gives them the benefit of the doubt. She truly believes people are good, and I am suddenly frightened to leave her alone with a complete stranger. I stand to make my way to her, but then I see her head throw back in laughter and see Scott smile widely as well. He hasn't smiled since arriving. I return back to my spot and try not to look back them too often.

Night rolls around and Bee has placed her own cot inside my relatively large tent. She's already asleep when I come in, so I kiss her forehead and lay in my own cot. 24 hrs of non-stop chaos and mind shuts off, allowing me to sleep.

I will be updating more throughout the week. BOY I came up with some interesting ideas for the rest of this story! Also, I had to throw a little Hunger Games tribute in there. No, Scott Hawthorne is not Gale's long lost brother. Just happens to share names. Much love! I'm happy to be back in this story to write for you!
