A/N: The next couple of month will even be a bigger roller coaster ride for Sam and Jon. Some good times. Some bad times. Hopefully they will pull through. Together.
Chapter 51
Staying at home alone (finally after almost 14 days with Elle, Leigh and Jessie at my side!), being practical home bound while you recover from a myocarditis can get a little boring over time. There is only so much to look at on the web, there are just so many TV show episodes to catch up on, that you find yourself zapping through your TV watching stuff you normally wouldn't.
One thing was a celebrity gossip channel. They always looked for the big news, mostly something no celebrity was proud of. They hunted scandals.
I stopped because they just told their viewers the latest gossip about Justin Bieber. The next segment came on and the anchorman said: "We recently got a call from a woman. A mother. She explained to us how her only son has forgotten about her. How he is living a celebrity life in the city of Sin when his own mother lives in a dump in freezing cold Cincinnati, Ohio. The mother is Caroline Good and you might know her son as Dean Ambrose, famous wrestler with the WWE. But let's hear it from Caroline herself."
You have to be kidding me. This was a media nightmare. I grabbed my phone and called Mark.
"You will not believe what I am watching right now." I explained everything to him and he promised to get on it first thing.
Jon's mother was a junkie. In the past he had paid her big amounts of cash already, he even paid for a stay in rehab but she always started to use again. The footage shown was really bad. No heater, no warm water and the apartment was small and looked like a dump. Jon gave up on his mother about 5 years ago. She was never a mother to him to begin with and then every attempt to help her only backfired. Now she must have gotten news about the Rumble win and the publicity and she was going for his wallet again.
He would be furious about this.
"Hey Jon." I called him. Better to hear it from me I thought to myself.
"Hey Sam, what's up? I am on my way to the gym."
"You might want to cancel that. Mark will get back to you soon. I really hate to ruin your day but something was aired..." and I told him about the interview with his mother.
He listened and didn't say a word once I was finished. So I waited and finally he said with barely contained anger: "Why doesn't that bitch die already? I can tell them what she will do with any money I throw her way. She will burn through it in a month. I will not pay her a cent. Nothing. She can go to hell for all I care. Freeze to death and I will be done with her. I will sue her for telling this shit."
"Jonathan, listen. WWE is on it. They will figure it out. I can only advise you to give no comment to no one. I know how much you hate it when your private life gets dragged into the spotlight. Let me check some things on my end and I will try to meet you tomorrow in person. We can't face this separately. We have to be united. There are enough rumors going around about us having problems because I sit at home recovering. I am fine, a week more or less won't change that. I will take care of my stuff and you find Mark."
"Sam I hate to drag you into this.""I am already into this, my last name is Good, it is my business as well. I'll call you."
I hung up and booked a flight to Dallas where Raw was filmed at tomorrow.
Shit would hit the fan and other news stations would pick up on this. A solution had to be found and quickly. And Jon needed to address the interview if he liked it or not. No comment was not helpful on the long run.
That stupid bitch. I would like to tell my mother in law what I thought about her very much right now.
I arrived in Dallas early the next day and couldn't resist to buy a few tabloids that had picked the story up. Pam (Webmistress of d-a dot net) had told me that fans kept bothering her about the news but she wouldn't't even post a link to the interview online. I promised her to get her a statement from Jon soon.
I arrived at the hotel in my rental and despise the fact why I was here it was good to be back at work.
Fans waited in the parking lot and some who recognized me walked up to me.
"Hey Sam how are you? How is Jon? Is that really his mother? Where have you been?"
"I have been out with an infection that spread to my heart. First day back actually. Jon is fine I am on my way to meet him. I can't really comment on the other stuff."
"Can you give him something that I made?" a young woman asked and handed me over a drawing of Jon or rather Dean.
"Yes, sure. That's amazing. Thank you."
"Cool, thank you. And I hope you figure things out with his mother. Good to have you back."
"Thank you." I told her honestly and grabbed just my bag. I was too weak to carry the suitcase. Someone could pick it up later.
I walked straight to Jon's room and could already hear aggravated voices behind the closed door. Seems like my husband had talked himself into a mood.
Knocking on the door I closed my eyes for a moment, inhaling deeply and preparing myself for this.
The door opened and it was Mark. Jon was walking up and down in the room and he was furious.
He looked at me and walked over to me, stopping in front of me and said: "I will not pay her anything. Screw her. She doesn't deserve another penny."
"Hello honey, nice to see you, too. Thank you, my flight was great. My suitcase? Oh that is still in the car. I was too weak to carry it, but thanks for asking." I sassed him and he took a step back.
He was really not in the mood to joke so I looked at Mark and two other people, one was a lawyer I recalled vaguely.
"Could you give us a moment?"
"Sure. Just a moment Sam?"
I followed Mark outside. "She wants money. 100.000 USD she says to help her get a new home and start a new life. The lawyers advise to pay the money if she signs a contract that will prevent any more payments in the future. She would also sign a contract stating she will not talk to the media about Dean ever again. It is a compromise, but on the long run it is a good deal. We want her to sign the papers, which is the goal. You should talk to him, make it clear to him, that this is the best way to resolve this matter quickly. Call me when you are ready to continue this conversation."
I walked back in and closed the door behind me, leaning against it and inhaling deeply again.
When Jon wanted to start to rant again I just held up my hand which made him stop.
"You married me, because you value my opinion and my input. Correct?"
He shoved a hand through his hair and cussed some more walking up and down.
"I will not pay her. I don't care what all of you say."
"Good. Because here is what I will tell you about this mess. People like a scandal more than they like happy news. I worked hard this past year to establish your credibility with the media. I worked hard on every minute you spend on TV. All of this work resulted in the fact that you won the Rumble, because WWE can't close their eyes any longer. They have to see and use your potential. You are a heel, you get heat out there but you also sell merchandise like crazy, TV stations want you for interviews because finally the lunatic fringe gig gets interesting for a wider audience. So I worked my ass off for that as well. With this shit now, the media will only want you for a comment on your mother or they will air shit about you. WWE will not let that slide because it would reflect badly on them. They will cheat you out of WM 31 ultimately. So here is what we do. We record an interview with Cole. We make a short clip for D-A dot net. We will issue a press release stating that your mother is being taken care of. That she has medical issues and that of course you help her out."
He wanted to interrupt me but I held up my hand again which made him look like a goldfish for a second because he wanted to run his mouth so badly but finally he closed it and pressed his lips together.
"You will help her out. Give her the money. And she will sign the agreements. That is what we want because after that this ends. And next time she tries to run her mouth we will sue her. She has no money so she would probably end up in jail. And she can run her mouth there. You will be the responsible son in this story Jon, and I will be the wife that supports you. Let's settle this and get this over with."
Done. I told him what I thought and now he was grinding his teeth. He hated this.
"She is a stupid bitch Sam." he whined finally but then he hung his head and I walked to him, embracing him and he buried his face in my shoulder. It took a couple of minutes for him to calm down enough to look me in the eyes again.
His eyes were a little wet and I kissed him with as much love as I could put into a single kiss.
"Us against the world Jon. Always. I would like another solution better as well, but this is the right thing. We have to shovel some money around but we can do that."
"It's not about the damn money..""I know." I whispered and hugged him again.
It was about his mother who was never a mother to him. Who always lived for the next fix and who would neglect her son to go out to score. He hated her for every shit she had put him through but he also wanted to love her. But he was jaded and his trust was betrayed and that was something she could never repair.
"Let's do this. All that you said. Sign that stupid thing, record the fucking interview, tape something for the website. But then everybody can get lost and I want to be left alone."
"Okay, I will call Mark and get myself a room."
"What?""You said you wanted to be alone...""Sam, you are my fricking fanatstic wife. You will stay. Of course. I thought you knew by now that we are one."
Now it was time for me to hang my head.
"We weren't one for six weeks." I mumbled. Because ever since I got sick he hadn't touched me, hadn't made love to me. Even though I was 100% medically cleared.
"Not this again Sam. Not today. I am scared I will hurt you. Let's just get you better first."
I was better but I kept my mouth shut and nodded. That was a problem for another day.
So we went to Mark and the lawyers, talked about the interview and Jon signed the papers presented to him. The WWE lawyer would now go, look for his mother and make sure she signed the papers and this would be over.
The interview was scheduled for this afternoon at the arena before RAW. Mark told us, that we could do a short clip for the website as well but we should be vague about everything.
We kept it really short, just telling the fans that of course Jon's mother would be taken care of and Jon almost had to puke after that.
The interview with Michael Cole wasn't much better. It was weird for me, because I never had been officially acknowledged by the WWE but Jon wanted me with him and here I was, just holding his hand and trying to look intelligent.
"Dean, recently your mother accused you of being a careless son. Obviously her living conditions are not ideal."
"Michael. I may be a son of a bitch in the ring, but of course I take care of my mother. I have to admit that the last couple of month have been very hectic for me. My wife was really sick, I had to take care of her. Then I won the Royal Rumble...""Well you didn't exactly win it alone..." Michael put in and Dean froze and looked at him until he held up his hands in surrender. "I won the Royal Rumble and things started to get really busy. Well, my wife is better, she is with me again to handle my schedule and of course I will take the time to take care of my personal affairs now, including my mother. She will get all the help she needs."
"Thank you Dean for this interview, and thank you Sam."
And we were done. Or so we thought. Hunter came to us personally before the show, telling Jon that he should take a week off, let things cool down and let the lawyers work their magic.
That would include the Smackdown taping tomorrow. He pretty much benched Jon and even changed the match tonight so it would look like Dean suffered an injury.
"That's what I meant Jon. WWE doesn't like bad publicity if it is your fault or not. We did the right thing. And I even know what we do with the down time."
"You always have a plan, huh?" he asked sarcastically. "Yes, a good one. We fly to Germany and finish the deal with the house. I want to get rid of it. This should have been dealt with 4 weeks ago."
"Sam, I really...""...have nothing to do. You are under the microscope right now over here. Let us take some time off. Come on."
"Okay..."
